Got too riled up again last night about the fact that h2g2 is nowhere near as popular as its pop culture prevalence suggests it should be. Honestly I'd put it up there with Star Trek and Star Wars in terms of scifi pop culture giants from the 60s-90s. I'd say that in nerdy and geeky settings you hear "don't panic" about as frequently as you hear "live long and prosper" or "may the force be with you", if not more often. I've never encountered a webpage with a 404 that references Star Trek or Star Wars, but I've come across multiple that said just "so long and thanks for all the fish". This here tag should be getting at least three times as many posts on a slow day, by my humble estimates. I feel like I'm living in the fucking Fermi Paradox of scifi lit because where is everybody!!!

And I've been driving myself crazy trying to figure out why that is. Like, are we currently just late? Is h2g2 a fandom that belongs to people my dad's age and I'm inheriting the scraps? I can't even find anything on h2g2's direct impact on pop culture either. Star Wars was super popular and Star Trek basically started modern fandom as we know it. Is h2g2 just too niche? Is it because it's a book series instead of tv and movies? Did h2g2 simply not permeate the culture deep enough and now everyone is pretending to know it because it's always been there?

Why is it like this!!! How did we get here!!! Where is everyone!!!

Very random question - is there a reason why Zib is usually depicted wearing all red, Rocky wearing all blue and Sy wearing all green? I'm asking, 'cause I saw an art of the three of them once and noted the color differences. I couldn't help but wonder - were these colors meant to symbolize something, such as making them distinct, in an earlier version of the story, or is it just pure coincidence?

Well, they're assigned band uniforms, in a sense, but they are also colors I associate with the characters thematically. In my mind, Zib's reds are typical - love, lust, passion for music, ambition. But how he wears these colors is the point. They're crumpled, wrinkled, unbuttoned. They hang off him like he lost something along the way. Rocky's blue is something I associate with night, the moon, high emotion, and the mercurial, sometimes turbulent states of water. His too-loud shade of blue has a difficult time fitting in anywhere.
