I like the yotsugi x nadeko bit in the last episode because the manga style makes it clear that her mental universe has expanded to include yuri (if it hadn't already, it's just that the only example of her manga we'd seen was het shoujo stuff ofc)

well, as long as we understand that we're grading on a curve because this series is full of fatalistic, depressive freaks,

probably Hitagi. she's gone through trauma and hardship, and come out the other side of it. she has a reason to look forward to the future and assume the best of things

Oikura Sodachi from the Monogatari Series

Starting to bother me that Araragi meets Hachikuji on Mother's Day. Given that a) the word for snail 蝸牛 includes a cow kanji for some reason and b) Hachikuji is the unfortunate center of several fondling jokes, I wonder if her name is a distortion of Haha-Chikubi 母乳首, meaning "mother's nipple". We could even exploit the gooey whiteness of the "mayo" in "Mayoi" for extra milk points, if we permit ourselves to ignore the more readily apparent reference to being lost.

I am completely unable to imagine why anyone would be haunted by the specter of Milky Nipples on Mother's Day of all days, but I'm sure the answer will sort itself out down the line. Ooh maybe it's a reference to the Milky Way, since this story loves star gazing?? Its Japanese name Ginga 銀河 means Silver River, which would map to a snail's slime trail and offer a rationale for the milk/snail synergy?? I began those sentences as jokey denials of papillary palpitations but it fits tbh. Wraps in the spiral motif as well. It pays to be unserious!

Tangential: I tried to look up if any snails excrete milk (they don't 😔), but instead found the Milk Snail. It is edible! Three cheers for Otala lactea! Hip-hip! (tasteful pause) Hip-hip! (tasteful pause) Hip-hip! (tasteful pause)
