I think that nisio’s fight choreo tends to be consistently good, even with shorter stuff. It makes sense why a lot of the more action heavy of his works tend to get adapted

I think what makes it so good generally is that first he can describe a set of actions with the right amount of detail that someone with an imagination can embellish the details and someone without one has a clear understanding of a->b movement in the scene itself. Another thing that compounds that is strength of perspective, while a more clinical objective description of events can add to atmosphere, nisio’s descriptions often run on restricted perspective and sensory description. I think some authors often forget how sensory the eye itself is to description, what characters notice and describe would in fact generally involve their eyes and what someone pays attention to and how much they describe that in daily life says a lot about them. This extends to fight choreography in how both the environment and the opponent exist in a scene. To think of it like animation, each description is a keyframe that conveys how the fight is in itself moving. If that makes sense.

I think the disconnect in comprehension is what makes written fight scenes not work for me a lot of the time even in books I like.

Of course the other thing that makes nisio’s fights fun is that he’s creative. It just so happens he can also ground that creativity well enough that the absurdity genuinely works.

The reason Nadeko’s bangs look like that in nademono is bc Nadeko doesn’t brush her hair, or at least, doesn’t style it. The bangs match up roughly to the otori cut it’s just that Nadeko has never really cared about brushing it much which is why the bangs have always clumped like that. At least that’s how it reads in the anime, the bangs are way more smooth on vofan or oh!great’s art, maybe akio watanabe has gap moe beliefs we don’t even know about.

I could see Nadeko as the type to have thin static-y hair (even with how much there is) so if she ran a brush through it, it might make crackling sounds. But I’m also down for 1b nadeko hair interpretations but that’s more in how people choose to make nadeko’s hair slightly curve for the snake motif + to be more visually interesting, given the fact Nadeko’s hair has a lot of volume anyway.

The girl modeled after the child version of your first love (questionable), made from the ground remains of children you feel eternally guilty about, the reminder of your failure, your narrative daughter you made in college with like 4 other classmates, is straddling the lap of a girl living your mangaka dreams+success story and living beyond love and grief in a way you never could but you also gotta be evil forever so now it’s time to make fun of the fact that Nadeko can’t locate Europe on a map. #bullying

Also like the main reason this set of events is happening with this specific kid is because of the fact that the sister of his first love (debatable), hated envy’d and loved her sister so much she immaculately conceived a daughter in a childish desire to be just like her. And that daughter was a snake and a hater, who sent out snake curses at people which you successfully disposed of before selling them to children as scams for menial profit, and it just so happened that one of the children had just enough problems and was just superstitious enough to accidentally revive both dead scam curses set on her by the kids that were trying to bully her.

She later uses the skills acquired from this incident to revive a dead god just for you to kill the snake again. She gets scouted for all this and it leads to her eventually drawing the initial problem naked, which actually ends up solving a lot of things going on with his first love’s sister’s magic daughter.

You have to fake your death again for this.

Imagination is really interesting because people take it as something that’s a whole, or a singular thing, but it’s actually parts of a whole.

Each type of imagination is actually separate but combines to a collective perception, you can essentially be blind in a lot of these aspects but you might not fully realize unless it’s a more major sense you can’t access the other side of. Like lacking mental images or an inner voice. The ability to imagine touch or taste or smell are put to the wayside but they do impact your life. I know at least for taste it does impact how people cook.

I think the split of sensation and description is a very interesting thing.

If after reading volumes 2 and 3 you're saying, "hey that was cool bro, but what does that have to do with the setup in volume 1?", the answer is "it really doesn't", that's basically why I settled for translating just 3 volumes.

As cool and intriguing as the Shikoku arc (volumes 2 to 6) and the Worldwide arc (volumes 7 to 9) might be, you can easily argue that they barely affect the real story in the series, which is actually: volume 1, the last pages of volume 8, and about half of volume 10. In fact, you could edit the rest of the story after volume 1 in a new final "volume 2", and make the story much more rounded and much less meandering/pointless.

Maybe you can keep Chino in as an ally with a reviving artifact in the EEA, maybe you can keep Bonfire in for the lulz? If you ask me, the focus should have been on Kuu and the threat from Earth, maybe on the Earthians too since they were brought up early on.

This series aside, you should be hearing from me whenever more Kyoko is out…!

I’m starting to read densetsu but I’m too much of a Alexithymia understander + other things so Shuu is just kind of a normal guy to me.

His thing is that he’s unable to connect with others or hold sentiment, but is also a turbomasker supreme. He does clearly posses some sense of guilt and frustration (with the logic of others, how people move on, not caring but being frustrated when others change their opinions, envy over that gap, guilt over not being normal, guilt over not having empathy, being more upset over the idea of being found out than being wrong). But he’s also just a very verbose 13 year old, he views himself as logical but is easily tricked, he’s also not immune to schoolboy crushes. I’m more willing to believe he’s more of a real IDGAF’er as opposed to Ii-Chan who has a lot more clear attachment and emotion and is just kind of a freak with it (I believe Tomo-chan is the true DGAF’er in that social dynamic). But much is left to be seen. I like Kendo though, seems like whatever’s wrong with her will be fun to read.

Reading more it does seem like while this kid has no empathy/sympathy he does really just seem to have like some sort of Alexithyma autism combo, fascinating strategy to kiss that guy, rip that one character (I’m not spoiler tagging this so this is all you get on the subject). Honestly I haven’t seen any of the monsters do anything I feel like they’re just killing ppl which is kind of a grind but I’m curious where the world building goes from here
