The final battle had been over. Muzan was dead. How many had fought only to watch one last dawn? For the first rays of light to guide their worn-out hearts to a future they had never hoped to witness— a world without demons. How many had survived, parts of themselves missing, parts of their bodies and souls alike, parts they’d been forced to give up on for the sake of taking one more step, of buying one more second. . . Those who could still breathe, how many of them had survived the final battle, how much life force, how much WILL, if one’s whole being had already been offered and depleted?

Sometimes, to stay alive was the most cruel of punishments. . .

Kanroji-san. She had been crying. . . In their last moments together, she had been crying. He didn’t have the time to properly comfort her, to stop those tears. Her last words. . . Begging him not to die. He didn’t have the time to properly say goodbye— he couldn’t. What a coward he had been in this short, miserable life he had led, never speaking of his true feelings about her, or even having the courage to admit the real reason he had joined the demon slayer corps: to die in this battle. In their last moments. . .

He shouldn’t have survived. The weakest of all the Hashira. If it hadn’t been for the help of others, poisoned and blind, he would have died an early death, without having been of any use at all. . . The moment his body had surrendered to its weight, his heart should have given out. He shouldn’t have any more time left to live. He had used it all in these few hours of battle, each hour amounting to a decade's worth of living. And yet, his heart had continued to beat an unsteady rhythm— in tune to hers, for one wasn’t meant to exist without the other.

Met with nothing but darkness and absolute silence, he’d wonder— was he alive? The first surge of pain comes as a confirmation. He was alive, against all odds. Between life and death, he had balanced, and despite choosing to FALL, despite choosing to give all his existence had to offer, he had survived. In a state of half-consciousness, he’d be, his mind trying to find its proper place in a body that shouldn’t have remained warm, in a body that shouldn’t be able to move, and a heart that shouldn’t any longer beat. Disoriented, he’d be, his senses dulled. He wouldn’t notice the figure sitting at a small distance from him, or her concerned gaze searching for any sign of movement.

A part of him was missing— Kaburamaru wasn’t with him. He found the strength to sit up, his hands first reaching to his mouth. It was an unfamiliar feeling, that it wasn't covered. Then his hands moved to his eyes, wrapped tightly with many layers of bandages. How ironic. Then, he heard the floorboards creak, and the sound of light steps move closer. He recognised those steps, before even her gentle voice called his name.

— Iguro-san? — Kanroji-san.

Out of instinct, he turned his head to the opposite direction, as if to hide away, despite knowing there wasn’t any point anymore. Kanroji-san had already seen him— SEEN him, in all his ugliness. A pathetic sight, he must be. Instead of dying holding his sword, in this cursed body, he’d be trapped, with no escape to a life that would be kinder to them both. He could only imagine the sorrow in her eyes just looking at him. There was no saving his doomed soul— this shame he’d carry for many lives to come, the shame of a pure love whose eyes had witnessed the horrors he was made of. If he wasn’t worthy of dying a demon slayer, how could he ever be deserving of her, in this, or any life?

His throat was closed. He couldn’t force himself to speak, to ask her how she was. Instead, his voice broke into a whimper ( more of a shaky breath, mixed with a muffled sob ). How arrogant he had been to believe he could cleanse his tainted blood with his hatred for demons. It was truly the greatest punishment of all, to LIVE. To live close to a love he couldn’t reach, and wouldn’t ever. How foolish, to hope and despair. To remain close to her from the very start, attracted as he was to her light, threatening that light of hers now, consumed by darkness as he’d be.

She heard footsteps move close. Stay away. She shouldn’t get any closer. Hands reach for him, cupping his face. Her touch was warm. This wasn’t right. And yet, he couldn’t resist. Couldn’t move away. Stop. I’m filthy. Her hands move to his hair, her touch gentle and soothing. He shouldn’t let her. And yet. . . ❝ Kanroji-san. . . ❞ Wasn’t she disturbed by the sight of him? His hand moved to take hold of hers, to take it off him, but instead his hand rested on top, leaning to her touch.

If this moment was meant to judge the nature of his soul, whether he could keep himself in the darkness, or selfishly reach for the light, a light he was forbidden to touch, he had already lost any chance at salvation.

— THOUGHTS. shinobu & obanai

I really like the potential between Shinobu & Obanai:

Shinobu knowing about Obanai's scars due to being the healer of the Hashira and maybe mid-battle or post-battle when she tends to Obanai, whether to give him something to slow down his bleeding or whatever, and she sees his scars. I like that, and also wandering if she'd confront him about knowing or not. And whether he'd speak of his past to her or not. And how Mitsuri's involved in all this, and the shame he carries.

Also I really like Obanai feeling comfortable around her after a while despite her being a woman and despite resembling his sisters and cousins: a woman who is speaking softly at him and in which her tone is fake. I can see him being triggered at the beginning when around her. Maybe at some point he also confronts her of being fake (because he knows what's like) and Shinobu maybe somehow realizes she could switch to her real self (or part of), and her real voice when she's around him. I like them bonding, opening up and being real to one another.

Also them being small, short and weaker than the other Hashira. And how it's canon one thinks the other of someone who works hard, and holding respect for one another.

Obanai is reminded of one of Kanroji-san's stories, where her cats would disappear and return with something utterly disgusting in their mouths. A gift to be proud of. This wasn't any different. Yet Obanai hadn't adopted any strays, and had no intention to. Nor was as kind as Kanroji-san to pretend to accept this sort of thing.
