For those who don’t follow kakapo conservation, they are critically endangered parrots who only breed on years where the rimu tree they rely on meet a certain threshold of fruit production. One breeding season in 4 years can be typical, and about half of all eggs laid by kakapo are infertile (they still aren’t completely certain why, it could be a recent population bottleneck) so each fertile egg is worth its weight in gold.
This was one of only 5 fertile eggs laid on the Whenua Hou island population in the 2014 breeding season and it got crushed by its mother on accident. It was mended with glue and tape and incubated by the rangers until hatching.
At 150 days old kakapo chicks are officially added to the population total and given a unique name, until then they are given their mother’s name and a number for birth order laid in the clutch. This chick was known as Lisa-one before officially being given the name Ruapuke by local indigenous Ngai Tahu people.Here he is grown up:

Rep. Mark Takano, who represents California’s 39th district, has reintroduced his 32-hour Workweek Act to Congress, which, if passed, would officially reduce the standard definition of the workweek from 40 hours to 32 hours by amending the Fair Labor Standards Act.
His proposal would mandate overtime pay for any work done after 32 hours, which would encourage business to either pay workers more for longer hours, or shorten their week and hire more people.
The bill applies to non-exempt workers, who typically work hourly jobs across leisure and hospitality, transportation, construction, manufacturing, wholesale, and retail trade.
This is by design, Takano tells CNBC Make It. “The serious conversations about the reduced workweek are happening for white-collar professions. What my bill will do is spur conversation about how we democratize this norm to other sectors of the workforce so everybody benefits.”
In addition to the OT wages for hourly folks cited above, this would also make 32+ hour workers ELIGIBLE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE, because a lot of companies skirt the law by scheduling folks for juuuuuuust below the minimum number of hours to qualify in order to fuck them over and pad their profit margins.
It's not universal health care, but it's a small step closer, and helps folks who have been getting fucked over.
Yes, give us a 32 hour work week. Kellogs had one for a long time and found staff were more productive. They made the move to 32 hours during the Great Depresssion, when the 40 hr work week was introduced.
Staff were more productive, healthier, and all commented on having a good work/life balance.

The two co-founders — who CBC News agreed not to name over concerns for their safety — said they decided to build the platform because while tenants have to provide a lot of personal information when leasing a property, there is a lack of transparency when it comes to landlords.

Varun Sriskanda, a board member with Small Ownership Landlords of Ontario, said he became aware of the website about two weeks ago and he has "some serious concerns" with it.
"To begin, there's no requirement that any of the reviews or comments being posted be backed up with the finding of a court or tribunal," he said.
"If you're gonna be saying things about your landlord that they fail to maintain the property, those allegations need to be proven by a court or a competent jurisdiction. We cannot allow people to post things on a website knowing it's fake, knowing it's false, and knowing it could lead to the detriment of the landlord, it could lead to loss of income."
Admittedly I don't know much about Canadian housing law, so this could be solely an American problem, but I have seen many, many eviction filings that either ignore how the law works or are straight-up lying. Whether the tenant wins or loses (and they usually lose because they don't know their rights), they have a record of a legal proceeding that comes up in background checks.
So yeah, my sympathy well is dry as a fucking bone here.

“People lie about being sick” is practically verbatim what the management at my old factory job told me when I expressed concern back at the start of the COVID pandemic, that their staunch refusal to change or allow leniency to their attendance policy was going to result in a lot of people getting sick because it would make people still come into work while symptomatic and then start passing the virus around like a damn football. And these were concerned expressed right after we had made it through a flu season where that very thing fucking happened.
So I quit that job because I wasn’t going to get sick off of their refusal to grant any wiggle room for employees that started showing symptoms, and you know what happened?
A month later, they shut down, because they were overrun with positive cases, and one of their employees fucking died.

Even prior to COVID I suffered every time I had to spend nearly an entire check just to get the proof I needed to not be fired. I never earned that money back. I missed a week of work due to a massive STAPH infection and came back to a boss desperate to push me out of the job because it was her shitty working conditions that made me sick in the first place.
People should be able to go to the doctor without it bleeding them dry and people should be able to take time to rest without fear of reprisals. Asshole.

I’m sick and the entire process to taking a week off was canceling a bunch of meetings and chatting my boss, “I’m sick, I’ll be out.” His entire response? “Rest up! :)”
I took two weeks off this spring and applied for family medical leave, and he told me if it didn’t come through, to just take the time and not worry about it. I really do not say this to brag, I say it to highlight how deeply unjust it is that the people with the best healthcare and wages are also assumed to be trustworthy. My father is a retired doctor of internal medicine, and he hates that shit so much. For one thing, it means some shitty manager has turned my dad into his student hall monitor, handing out passes instead of helping heal people. It’s a waste of time and resources, and it’s insulting.
But the main thing is, a policy like that endangers people.
Say you have the flu. Fever, cough, sore throat. First of all, he can’t help you. The doctor is just going to tell you to drink a lot of fluids and sleep and stay home. Many many illnesses are like that, all you can really do is stay hydrated and let your body do its thing. But you knew to do that already.
Since you’re there already, he’s going to recommend some over the counter medicine, and if you are a loud enough asshole and your doctor works for a shitty enough hospital, he’ll cave and prescribe you antibiotics that won’t work because the flu is a virus not a bacteria, but that’s a whole other post.
The thing is, he has other patients. And some of them are immuno-compromised, and some of them have conditions that make lung illnesses or fevers particularly risky for them, and you just brought your extra-contagious self into the same waiting room they sit in. Touched a bunch of doorknobs, rode the elevator with a couple nurses, leaned in to hear what the receptionist was saying… all so that he can tell you the best thing you can do is not leave your house for any reason, which you knew already but your fucking job made you do it.
my father was so angry about it he used to offer any amount of time for any reason. Like, you’d come in and say, like, my shoulder is too sore to lift things at my lifting job, note for two days please, and my dad would literally just say “how long do you actually want off work?” as in, if you had the money to take six months off and wanted to, he’d write the note for six months. As far as he was concerned, the more it screwed over the business making both of you do this bullshit, the better.
So. It’s not like forcing people to get a doctor’s note prevents lying about it, if that was your main reason for thinking it’s a good policy.

Wow yeah that’s it, isn’t it. And I’d wager that this behavior is likely proportional to the amount that a country has a consumerist culture. Looking at life through a materialist/customer experience mindset, it then becomes rather difficult to talk about policy and ethics as well, since over time you see people you interact with as Service Providers instead of people like yourself just doing a job.
In light of recent events, I would like to remind everyone that the correct pro choice talking point that will actually pull people to our side is NOT whether a fetus is human or not because you'll never win. The correct argument is how the state should never have the power to force you to give up physical autonomy for the sake of any other being.
if the state can't force you to be an organ donor after your death, it shouldn't be able to force you to be an organ donor before your death. if you can't be forced to give even a pint of blood for half an hour, you shouldn't be forced to give up your uterus for nine months. if your alcoholic father can't demand you give him half your liver, if the red cross can't just demand your blood, if those wig making companies can't demand your hair, no one should be able to demand your reproductive system.

Furthermore, having risky sex is not the same as consenting to having your body co-opted. If you drive recklessly and die in a car accident, the state still can't harvest your organs without your consent. If you've been a bad person you're entire life, that still doesn't give the state the right to take your blood without consent. No behavior on your part can exempt you from bodily autonomy.
