Okay so, I play the Frontier series as my main other than Tri, and decided to take on a Black Gravios for the first time for his scales to complete my Rukodiora set. I was only HR 48, so my stuff wasn't exactly amazing by Frontier standards, but I figured a blue sharpness SnS and an almost complete Rukodiora set would be fine. I always played Frontier solo because my Chinese is sort of average, so I thought hey, if I can take on a Rukodiora solo then a Black Gravios can't be so bad.

The quest was set in the Old Swamp, and had a High Rank Gypceros in addition to the Gravios. I ignored the Gypceros for a while, and went for the Gravios. Wasn't too bad, my armour was working great and could handle his heat ray surprisingly well, until 40 seconds in and my blue sharpness degraded to green, which would absolutely not cut into the Gravios. My blue sharpness bar was too small for me to deal substantial damage. I didn't mind it much at first, because I had a habit of carrying the max number of whetstones with me even though I pretty much don't use them, but as the quest progressed my weapon started becoming my biggest regret.

The Gypceros started interfering more with my hunting, and the Gravios would just keep shooting his heat ray and no matter what would not step out of the goddamn poison puddles like seriously I don't have any poison skills and I absolutely do not have the resources to continuously make antidotes holy shit. I couldn't make enough antidotes to protect myself from the Gypceros and the area's poison and I couldn't deal actual good damage to the Gravios. I was also running out of whetstones so there's that too. I didn't have the whetstones and sharpness capacity to waste on the Gypceros, so I kept ignoring it and focused on killing the Gravios rather than trying to break anything.

That went on until I had less than 5 minutes left, I carted once, I had no antidotes, no whetstones and no potions because the Gypceros stole my whole stack of Mega Potions oh my god. I placed all of my hopes and dreams onto my rebound and elemental damage along with internal screaming and rage that it's either you or me buddy, and it ain't gonna be me.

I killed it, with 18 seconds to spare. The relief I felt was indescribable. And then I carved it and got three shells and one flame sac. Thanks desire sensor.

Okay, so. A friend of mine(Bluey) and myself(Grim) were doing the Desert Seltas quest in G1. Both of us were acquainted with the horror show that is Rajang, but we lucked out in an absolutely tremendous way.

No sooner had we killed and finished carving the Desert Seltas than Rajang came rocketing in from above. He had just enough time to notice us before he laid down for a quick nap. We were lucky that as soon as he awoke, now APEX, the both of us flexed as the quest was officially over.

Even though I think Monster Hunter Frontier’s monsters are not quite as well designed as the ones in the internationally released games it certainly does have its gems, like Baruragaru!

The following is an excerpt I posted lately that I wanted to share, in that I don't want people to think good things never happen.

I do a lot of talking about Monster Hunter. That’s because I love Monster Hunter! However, I realize a lot of that is very negative and it kind of comes off like I’m just going the route of full-blown misanthropy. That’s simply untrue. Today, I wanted to talk about a hunter I’ve fought alongside many times now. They don’t talk very much, but their skills are simply undeniable. That hunter is the enigmatic, powerful hunter known simply as KANON.

While hunting with a close friend through the high ranks, we first crossed paths during a bit of a gaming marathon. KANON was a bit of the team leader most bouts, rocking the disgustingly good Link Tunic armor set and Master Sword weapons, leading us to many victories. Over the course of which we swapped our hunter cards and friend invites, which everyone involved accepted. But like friends made along roadtrips, most hunters you meet you likely never meet again. And here’s where KANON differs.

After a months-long hiatus from the game to catch up on others, I returned to the game and formed a private room with another friend as we launched into gathering some necessary parts for weapon upgrades in G1 and G2 hunts. Out of no where, KANON joins us. This means, they used my friend code to access the room, which was otherwise password protected, but they had seriously powered up! Now KANON had endgame Fatalis armor and ultimate-form weapons which were honed to perfection. They once again lead our trio to victory time and time again, leading the charge silent and stalwart. After a few hours passed, they left as quietly as they came, like a mysterious Spanish gentleman.

I don’t know who you are, or if you’re out there, but, thank you KANON, for exemplifying what we hunters all aspire to be. I hope to fight by your side again in MonHun4U and in MonHun Generations when it debuts in the west!

Hunting...happiness

Faith in random hunters increased earlier.

So, I’ve been trying to get through the advanced shah dalamadur quest for alatreon parts with no luck. Eventually the lovely HR697 hunter Ren showed up with a few others.

So we started off well against shah but then two of the squad got disconnected leaving just me and Ren. Which is where she and her hunting horn (onyx Terpsichore, final gogmazios horn) saved me from another failure. She pinged off some positive encouragement shoutout sand continued to give me attack and defense buffs as we fought shah and kept each other’s health up. And we won.

And then she and few more randoms stayed in my hall to go on and farm a few more shahs and being supportive after unavoidable faints while we farmed super crimson fatalis for a while.

When online hunters are good like this, the game is even better.

To Mod NoName - There's a reason why i use a Blast Arc bow over a power shot. In the case of entering a room where there is a piggybacker and denying them carves. Though it's gotten me kicked a few times because the idiot piggybacker was a friend of the room owner, but.. I take no prisoners.

Piggybackers are pretty gross. I’m still not over the guy who decided to try and piggyback off of me and then was angry when I wouldn’t let him carve. If you dont do the work then you don’t reap the rewards.

The worst expedition of my life

So I was driving to a family event down in Cincinnati Ohio from Columbus Ohio and I had just unlocked the high rank expeditions and decided to see what the monsters would be like. I saw that an azure rathalos would be there so I decided to go onto it. I think about like 8 minutes with almost all of my coating the beast finally fell. I thought about just taking what it had and walking, but then out of nowhere a pink rathian comes out and poisons me then shoots fireballs whenever I tried to take an antidote and I fainted. I wanted to get revenge so I went back and fought it barely beating it before it escaped so I carved it and started walking away. Then finally I found a deviljho. Now at this point I'm out of rations and well done steaks with only herbs left to heal me. I started to run but like the gods of the hunter world had a vengeance against me. A purple gypceros came and either poisoned or flashed me while the deviljho attacked me it got so bad I ran out of supplies and ran away with no stamina, Dragon blight an enraged deviljho. I got away by the skin of my teeth. To add insult to injury the next highest expedition I could take would have a treasure area but a rajang. But that is a story for another day.

Guess I’ll add a story of my own to the list - ModFuriora

So, me and a friend of mine decided we’d to the Teostra hunt because I needed it to get my HR8 urgent. I’ll tell you about that one later. So we set up and shipped out. In hindsight, bringing my Double Gore set was a terribad idea. I’d heard the legends about Teo’s Supernova and I knew it also inflicted Blastblight but I didn’t know it had other fire attacks!

I cart the first time about 5 minutes in to a supernova, granted I didn’t really “feel the wrath” as it pounced on me first and i had about a 5th of my heath left when my timer ran out. (Yes, I had a timer so I could keep an eye out for the Supernova) Second cart was about 5 minutes later to a flamethrower, how was I ment to know he extends the range of his attacks when he does a certain animation?

So we finally get him limping and he runs to area nine, We follow and get a few good hits in and he trades bakc, then decides to start up his AoE while I was stuck in stun status, needless to say, with my -46 fire res and normal sized healthbar (didn’t have Ac.potions) my hunting life flashed before my eyes, luckily i survived with a fraction of my health left. Then litterly 3 seconds later, I found out when Teo rams be, it does exactly the same amount of damage that a lifepowder used by my timemate heals. I got struck and though I was dead for sure but my health bar didn’t move. Only when my team mate told me he’d lifepowdered did I figure out it must of taken effect the moment the monster hit me. We got him in the end. First Try Teo, ModNoname was jelous.

Since it seems to be topical, and I'm a noob, is it smarter to wear, say, full Tetsucabra or a mishmash of relic pieces that give me no skills but about 50 more armor? I rarely get carted either way, but at HR1 it's hard to know what's best...

It depends on your hunting style, honestly. Are you purely offensive and prone to taking more hits? Then you’ll want to get that extra defense to cut down on the damage taken. Are you more interested in dealing damage and using armor skills to your advantage to speed a quest along? Then by all means, get those armor skills and cause some damage!

It all depends on how you play and what you plan to do during quests.

I’d say it depends on the skills the armor might gave if completed. I love having my speed-shapener and sharpness +1 so I’m willing to sacrifice a little defence for that. There’s a whole other topic to do with resistances. Just think about which matters more to you; the skills? or the defence?
