The Doughnut Challenge

Is there ever a time when someone isn’t in the mood for donuts?

Even if you’ve just eaten the biggest, stodgiest meal of your entire life, there’s still that hidden cavity in your stomach that lusts after a sweet, fluffy doughnut!

My personal favourite is jam. Always has been.

I remember eating multiples of them at a time when I was young (and had a higher metabolism). It went hand in hand with that totally impossible challenge – finish eating a jam doughnut without licking your lips!

I challenge you. It’s much, much harder than you think.

Tiramisu. Because just wow. Look at the artistry in that! Perfect for those who love a good balance of sugar and coffee!

We all love a good movie, right?

Hollywood and Bollywood have snuck into our hearts and set up permanent residence there. We probably feel closer to Hugh Grant and PC than we do to most of our distant cousins.

That’s why we’ve created this amazing tie-up with Deepak Cinema, for you.

Deepak Cinema opened its doors in Lower Parel in 1926, and is one of the oldest single screen cinemas in Mumbai.

It’s no surprise therefore that it is full of character and nostalgic charm: the almost-life-sized white elephant statues that grace the courtyard certainly add to that.

In terms of movies, Deepak shows a unique range of foreign films, art house movies and the latest Hollywood releases. It’s committed to “great cinema”.

The auditorium was also recently renovated to include the latest sound and visual technologies and create a Grade-A cinema complex. Not to mention, the seating is some of the most comfortable in Mumbai - I haven’t pulled my protractor out yet but I’m pretty sure the seats recline by a solid 45°.

All this means that Deepak Cinema pulls a fun crowd of movie-lovers. So next time you come, don’t forget to mingle and natter about the film you just watched over some deliciously cheesy pizza!

Jamie’s Pizzeria - to Eat or Not to Eat?

Let me be honest from the start: I have a soft spot for Jamie. His lilting ‘Mockney’ accent cannot help but remind me of home. And the hope was that his restaurant would do the same… a little piece of London in Mumbai.

In some ways it succeeded.

The vibe is reminiscent of his London establishments. The décor is quirky and homely: a mixture of photo frames, blackboards and Jamie’s “how-to” videos fill the walls, and the kitchen is open plan so you can watch the chefs chuck your pizza into the air, while your tummy begins to grumble more and more loudly.

And when it comes to the food, there are some strong wins! The pepperoni pizza, for example, is a great balance of spice-y and cheese-y. We recommend adding some jalapeno peppers for an extra kick!

The Red Rocket is another strong option. Stacked with sundried tomatoes, rocket, mozzarella, cheddar and Parmesan, it isn’t short on cheese! In fact, at least half of the menu is vegetarian, so it’s perfect for all the veggies out there!  

However, the pizza Capricciosa didn’t live up to my – admittedly high(!) - expectations. While the ham was good quality, the pizza overall lacked taste, and didn’t deliver the, “Oh My God, this is bloody amaaazing” moment I was hoping it would.

Also, a word of warning; stay clear of the tiramisu. Jamie’s interpretation is a stodgy, orange-infused imposter of the classic Italian dessert. Try the affogato instead!

Having said that, Jamie’s Pizzeria offers a cheery place for a bite to eat. And we’ll definitely be going there to catch a slice of pepperoni pizza before our next Moodoo at PVR!

Happy Friendship Day!

Today is Friendship Day.

I tend not to like these new-fangled “Days”, which range from the sublime to the ridiculous: August includes International ‘Rice Pudding Day’, ‘Cat Day’ and ‘S’mores Day’, amongst others! I too love a good rice pudding, but does it deserve its own day in the international calendar? I’m not convinced.

But while Friendship Day falls into this bucket of gimmicky, commercial days, it is actually a fantastic opportunity to step back and appreciate the wonderful people in your life who will always have your back.

The beauty of friends is that they – the real ones – will stand by you through thick or thin. They’ll sit with you in silence on a bad day and laugh out loud with you on a good day; they’ll suffer your grumps and wildly celebrate your successes; they’ll tell you the truth when you need to hear it and give you a bar of chocolate when you don’t want to hear it!

It’s a pretty special thing when you think about it.

So let’s take the 7th August as an arbitrary but wonderful day to celebrate with our best buddies.

And in Moodoo style, let’s not celebrate by sending a heart emoji or a GIF of a dancing hamster. Let’s get out there and have a bloody good time with the people we love!!

As you all hopefully know, we released a major update a few weeks ago with some exciting changes to the Moodcast! 

The idea was to make it much simpler for you to quickly rally groups of your friends for drinks, sport or for whatever you’re in the Mood to doo.

Happy 4th July

It’s 4th July. And while I might not be American or painting my face with stars and stripes, I will take it as a fantastic excuse to eat some hot dogs. And so should you!

Here are my top 3 spots in Mumbai for some American Style dogs:

ZooBar

With an entire section of the menu dedicated to the Hot Dog, ZooBar knows what it’s talking about. Choose your Frankfurter with cheese, bacon or barbeque sauce and bite right in – it’s a good ‘un. (Rs. 325).

Desi Deli

For an Indian-inspired alternative to the American hot dog, Desi Deli is a must. The bap-focused menu includes treats such as The Goan Desi -  filled with Portuguese chorizo and apple sauce – or The Jungli Dog - a hot and fiery version of the classic hot dog. Veg options are available too! (Rs. 290 each).

*Bandra West & Andheri West. Wait until the 5th July for this one though – they’re closed on Mondays!

Indigo Deli

The Deli Dog has been a long-time favourite. Nothing too fussy or complicated; just a good banger in a good bun, with plenty of pickled gherkins and mustard! Oh, and the slaw side is pretty is darn good too. (Rs. 545).

Rediscover your city: Feasting at Bohri Mohalla

Ramadan is a time of fasting and feasting. But for now, we’re going to focus on the feasting and share some our favourite places to try out during this exciting, foodie period...

While Mohammad Ali Road is the food epicentre for this Muslim festival, our knowing local guide took us slightly off piste, towards Bhori Mohalla. Slightly less crowded but filled with the smell of succulent kebabs and tender, slow-cooked meats, Bohri Mohalla is well worth putting on your Ramadan road map.

Our first pit stop was Haji Tikka: a no-frills, tightly-packed café on Raudat Tahera Street. We quickly started piling up silver trays stacked with kebabs, pulled straight from the Tandoor ovens in the back of the shop. The seekh kebab was delicious as was the chicken tikka, but the surprise contender here was the kheeri (buffalo udder). Udder didn’t immediately strike me as the tastiest item on the menu… and yet it wowed us all. So much so that we ordered a second portion!  

Whilst we were gobbling down this kebab feast inside Haji Tikka, one of the group snuck off to get some bread from the roti shop directly opposite. This roti was OUT OF THIS WORLD… magnificently huge, soft, yet also crispy, and strangely reminiscent of Rich Tea biscuits: a fantastic accompaniment to your otherwise purely protein-based meal.

Don’t forget to add some Shahi Darbar Khichda to the mix too – a slow-cooked, savoury porridge of meat, wheat and pulses topped with a garnish of fried onion, coriander and lime. You can pick this up at Jalil Ahmed just a little further down the street and bring it in to enjoy alongside your meaty bites at Haji Tikka.

If you haven’t had enough meat yet; fear not! Head straight to Surti 12 Handi for some Bara (twelve) Handi. This dish is of Iranian origin and, as the name suggests, is made up of 12 dishes rolled into one; all to be wiped up with roti or naan. We went for the recommended specialty with a base of fresh bone marrow (yep, no part of the animal is left behind on this foodie trail!).

For those of you with a sweet tooth, Bohri Mohalla will not disappoint. Two places, in particular, stand out for the ultimate sweet finale...

First, Taj Ice Cream; the oldest ice cream parlour in Mumbai. The ice cream is made only from fruit that is in season and it is all hand churned in the back of the tiny shop. Right now you should try the mango and the sitafal (custard apple); they’re both incredible! One lick of the stuff and it suddenly makes sense that this simple, unembellished cafe should be a 125 years old institution.

Second must-do is the legendary Tawakkal sweets! Their rabadi (a nut-infused rice pudding) is to die for and, although we couldn’t squeeze another mouthful in by this point, we hear that their Malai Puff is wonderful too, and the local favourite. So try to keep some room!

For your own Ramadan adventure, hurry down to Byculla quickly; there are only 7 days of the festival left. 

And do remember to organise it via Moodoo of course!

Rediscover your city: Bicycle tour in South Mumbai

Once you’ve been living in a city for a while, it’s only too easy to start taking it for granted. We forget about all the things that we love about it, and start picking up on all the negatives… “Arggghh, this traffic is driving me crazy!” or “Why is there no good cheese?!”

So we’re going to start writing a few blog posts that remind you how fabulous your city is and suggest some fun ways to rediscover it. Via Moodoo, of course!

First up – a 6am bicycle tour of South Mumbai.

If you’ve got your own human-powered two-wheeler, by all means grab some friends and start cycling. But we recommend doing this via Reality Tours and Travel.

The premise is simple; gather at 6am – 615am to be exact - at one of the Pasta Lanes in Colaba to meet your jovial tour guides and grab your bicycles.

After a few failed attempts to make polite conversation as you rub the sleep out of your eyes, you head off in the direction of CST station.

At 6 in the morning, you have the roads to yourself as the city begins to wake up: the newspapers are still being organised into piles, the chai wallahs are starting to brew their tea and the honking hasn’t yet begun… it’s spookily peaceful.

First stop - Chatrapati Shivaji Station: A familiar landmark for everyone in the city. But definitely worth giving it a few minutes of your time to just stand back and appreciate how darn beautiful it is, before dashing on towards the bustle of Crawford Market.

Once the main wholesale market of Mumbai, Crawford is a fascinating place. With never-ending piles of vegetables, fruits, toiletries and gadgets, there’s nothing it doesn’t sell! For the faint-hearted – and more importantly, the vegetarians – amongst you, I’d give the butchery zone a miss though. Hygiene is still not high on Crawford’s agenda...

The bicycle ride becomes a little more treacherous as you head into the smaller alleyways that link Crawford Market, Zaveri Bazaar and Mumbadevi Temple. As we nipped through Zaveri Bazaar, our chirpy tour guide pointed out some people on the road who were avidly brushing up dust from the pavement. Upon a second, more attentive glance, we noticed just how clean this one strip of road was – there wasn’t a piece of litter in sight! For the non-Mumbaikers reading this, Zaveri is an important gold and jewelery market. So, every night, people sweep up the pavement in the hope that they’ll also sweep up some shavings of gold that have been blown out onto the street during the hustle and bustle of the previous day. It’s a painstaking task!

The tour continues and after a brief stop at Mumbadevi Temple, you arrive at Panjrapole – a Jain cow sanctuary, smack bang in the middle of the city. Who knew that was there?! It’s not exactly a lush meadow, but Panjrapole offers a safe haven to old and invalid cows. It also coincidentally houses a lot of fat cats who laze about, lapping up fresh, creamy milk… someone should really let the other stray cats know that they’re totally missing a trick here.

After the cow sanctuary, the tour starts heads South again via Marine Drive, to end the adventure at Sassoon Dock. Busy, dirty, crowded, smelly and full of fish, Sassoon Dock is not the first thing on everyone’s to-do list. But perhaps it should be! As long you’re wearing covered shoes and are ready to hold your nose, Sassoon Dock is a wild and wonderful experience that gives you access to the city’s old-school fishing industry. Plus you’ll never get fish so fresh anywhere else in the city – straight out of the fisherman’s boat!

In the spotlight: Grandmama’s Cafe, Lower Parel

Go when in the mood for: breakfast, brunch, coffee, waffles, Parsi eggs.

An unexpected moodoo – as all the best are – took us to Grandmama’s Café for breakfast yesterday morning. And a jolly good breakfast it was too.

The menu is allegedly based on recipes from Indian, Parsi and Italian grandmothers. Whilst this may be true, it’s not for the faint-hearted or those on a diet - breakfast at Grandmama’s includes a delicious choice of eggs, waffles or pancakes. There’s not a fruit salad in sight!

After some ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’, we opted for the Akuri on Toast, Salli Eggs and the Eggs Shakshuka, and then finished it off – somewhat unnecessarily but totally gleefully - with fresh waffles laced with maple syrup and ice cream.

The Eggs Shakshuka - poached eggs in a rich, tangy tomato, onion and feta sauce - was a particular hit. The Salli Eggs were a deliciously naughty start to the day too; they’re essentially the gourmet, Parsi equivalent of fried eggs on chips!!

The waffles were lovely and fresh and the coffees weren’t bad either so, all in all, a great new foodie bolt hole in the Lower Parel area.

But a review of Grandmama’s Café wouldn’t be complete without a comment on the interiors. The name of the establishment has had a direct effect on the style of the restaurant and the design would be quite fitting in the living room of a grandmother who has a love for pastel colours and floral prints. The effect is fun and quite charming although perhaps a little too reminiscent of the office of Harry Potter’s Professor Dolores Umbridge!

In short, a happy discovery and one that I’d recommend hitting up on your next moodoo for breakfast or brunch! Enjoy!

In the spotlight: The Village Shop, Bandra

Go when in the mood for: chilling; a health boost; a long, lazy catch-up with friends

The Village Shop recently appeared at the bottom of Chimbai village. Nestled beneath a palm tree and hidden in a swathe of green, it’s a welcome retreat in the midst of bustling Bandra.

Like its older sister, Birdsong Café, The Village Shop’s best feature is the design. Taking inspiration from its name, it has a façade of shiny white tiles reminiscent of an old-school butcher with ‘The Village Shop’ written stylishly across the front in dark green. Most of the seating is outside on the spacious patio so that you’re best situated to take in the fun exteriors - although I’m not sure what will happen in monsoon; perhaps go with a pair of rubber boots just in case! 

While the “wow” factor comes from outside, the inside space is quaint and charming too. With ply walling and a beautiful mosaic floor, the small room houses a counter that sells cookies, cakes and savoury snacks –the ‘Shop’ element of the The Village Shop!

So that’s all fine and dandy: A lovely outdoor space that’s perfect for a long overdue catch-up with friends or a romantic date. But what about the food?

Well, like Birdsong, it’s perhaps not the most exciting menu in town. I tried out the egg combo breakfast when I was there, which was perfectly fine as far as fried eggs go but it came with a rather unnecessary side of roasted vegetables. The coffee was good but not great. The best thing I had was a detox green smoothie that turned out to be surprisingly delicious despite its high health quotient! There were a few other interesting options on the menu… a good selection of sandwiches and some hot dishes, including veg lasagna and mutton stew! I’ll be back to try out more.

All the ingredients at The Village Shop are organic and locally sourced. So anyone looking for a cute, environmentally friendly café in the Western ‘burbs of Bombay, this is your new bolt hole.  

While the food doesn’t make my tummy rumble in anticipation, I plan to spend many lazy Sunday mornings at The Village Shop with friends and an organic, vegetable smoothie! Organised via moodoo of course... !

TC/3

A few weekends ago, on the 4th - 6th March, we were back in Delhi for TC/3. I can hardly believe that a whole year has flown by since the last Coalition festival! But there we were again... 

This year, the ante was upped and there were 3 days of TC instead of last year’s 2. Unfortunately, my first day at the Festival of Creativity was cut short by travel time and a meeting somewhere in the outer depths of sprawling Delhi. Nevertheless, I did still manage to catch a few great talks; the most memorable of which was the panel held on ‘DIY: Content’ by Arunabh Kumar from TVF, Rhea Gupte of Fuss, Malini Agarwal of Miss Malini and Regha Jha, Editor of Buzzfeed India. With such big personalities on stage the panel was a hoot and the audience steadily giggled away throughout the 45 minutes. 

The key take-out of the discussion was the need to do what you’re passionate about. A predictable lesson perhaps? But passion is what led each of these content creators to, well, create content. Miss Malini explained her thought process for choosing a career by instructing the audience to;

“Close your eyes and think about what you would do for the rest of your life, even if nobody paid you. That, my friends, is the career for you.”

Rhea Gupte, fashion blogger extraordinaire, supported the argument for passion and authenticity by explaining that you should only create content that you’re proud of: “Don’t get caught up in the numbers games of how many likes, shares or comments your post gets. Think of your long-term strategy - are you only putting content out there that you’re really proud of?”

The next 2 days were very different but great nonetheless! On Saturday and Sunday, we set up a “moodoo social shop” in the Kitsch Mandi area of the festival. The idea was to exchange some very delicious cupcakes for downloads and shares on social media. So using social currency instead of Rupees! The only problem was the fact that we were stuck in one of Delhi’s signal black holes. There were occasional flashes of network coverage but 3G remained a distant dream, making downloads an impossibility! But the cupcakes went down a treat... 

The best thing about those two days with the stall was probably the number of fantastically creative people we met. Everyone from fashion students to bloggers, entrepreneurs to investors were circling Talkatora Stadium, soaking up the creative energy and stopping at the moodoo stand. 

There aren’t enough events yet in India, and certainly in Mumbai, that pull like-minded people together on this scale (unless you head to an IPL cricket match), so I’m totally rooting for many more of them and already look forward to TC/4. 

Perhaps a venue with 3G next time though, hey guys?

Hello world!

Quite a lot has happened since I last wrote a post. The biggest thing, of course, is that moodoo is now LIVE on Android and iOS. Hurrah!! So before reading any further, please rush your thumbs to the App Store or Play Store and download moodoo app: it will change your world! 

To get moodoo off the ground, there have been two chapters to its launch so far... 

The first launch event took place in Bombay. At the end of January, we held a fabulous get-together at moodoo HO for approximately 100 people. Our extended group of friends, a couple of journalists and anyone in the vicinity rallied round to make it a special night.

Peroni India very generously sponsored the beer bar while Cocofly (India’s new, 100% natural packaged coconut water) put together a fabulous cocktail menu with the help of HipCask’s Aneesh Bhasin! And in the spirit of moodoo, we also had many other activities to make sure everyone had a jolly good time with friends. This included table football, a photo booth, a mini movie experience (complete with Onesta popcorn stand) and a pop-up shop by Bombay’s own Obataimu, for all those in the mood for a late night shopping spree. 

In comparison, London was a smaller, more intimate affair between close friends. But it was wonderful to introduce the product we have been working on for so long to our nearest and dearest... and to sport our fabulous Juggz-moodoo t-shirts at long last!

A mini launch also took place in Oxford. Arjun and I took a nostalgic trip back to St. Hugh’s College - the place we first met - to introduce the current students to moodoo. On one evening, we held a talk on entrepreneurship as a career path. On the next, we sponsored a Pre-Bop-Party with drinks, sweets, and lots and lots of glitter. For those not familiar with the “Bop” terminology - it is an Oxford tradition where each college holds a raucous, fancy dress party every fortnight on college grounds. It’s essentially a cheesy, sweaty discotech; but so much fun. Thanks so much to the Entz and Careers Reps for helping us get it sorted.

It’s been a lot of fun so far and it’s great to have both the iOS and Android up and running. As you may have noticed though, we’re experiencing a few notifications issues on the iOS! Pretty please be patient as we figure them out as quickly as possible... Vaibhav is working his socks off to get it sorted!!
