I need help finding a patron deity. Any suggestions?

here are some suggestions and ideas for you:

are you drawn to any pantheons in particular? begin researching the ones you’re the most drawn to and see which deities call out to you the most

read: read, read, read. knowledge opens doors.

research deities, their mythology, offerings, symbols, and the culture(s) in which they were/are worshiped

if the culture and/or religion in which the deity is worshiped is a closed one, it may be best not to proceed (see: cultural appropriation) or, if possible, get in contact with people who are a part of that culture and ask them for guidance.

some of the most common ways for deities to reveal themselves are through dreams, meditative visions, symbolism, and animals.

begin meditating and keep a meditation journal. over time, write down what you feel and what you might see or hear during any visualizations/visions during meditation

begin keeping a dream journal as well - take note of any animals, colors, flowers/plants, and other elements that seem important (same goes for when you’re meditating) - take note of any reoccurring themes or patterns

stop and consider: is there anything that you’ve always been drawn to, that strongly resonates with you? nature, the ocean, a specific animal, art, fire, woodworking, etc. you could look into deities associated with these things.

learn to trust your instincts and intuition.

divination can also be very useful when trying to pinpoint one’s patron deities and/or communicate with them.

if you are interested in a particular deity, you can try telling them flat out that you’d like their guidance and that you’d like to honor them, and ask for them to give you signs that you’ll be able to recognize. one way you can do this by composing a ritual, making an offering and speaking sincerely. be respectful and don’t make demands or try to force anything. if you’re not sure what to offer them or what is associated with them - go with your gut. some traditional offerings are cakes, wine, juice, milk, honey, and/or incense.

be attentive, look for names, words, symbols, and images that come up a lot in your daily life and dreams. be mindful of themes and patterns. keep an eye out for animals that may be behaving in an unusual manner (but learn when to distinguish when an animal may be ill, rather than showing interest in you, usually by consulting a veterinarian or someone who routinely works with the animal in question)

it’s okay to worship a deity that you feel drawn to, but haven’t been contacted by, yet. a lot of people do this!

try not to stress and try to be patient, gods and goddesses usually reveal themselves in their own time or when they feel it’s right.

Personal Relationships with Spirits & Deities

Here are a few pointers to strengthen your relationship with them. 

 Meditate. First and foremost, you need to have an alright grasp on quieting your mind. You need to have an idea of where your mind wanders and how to clear unwanted thoughts. It also helps calm yourself and prepare your mind to enter a different state of consciousness (like flipping a switch). This makes it easier to contact deities and spirits that may be on another realm of existence. 

Offerings. And I mean frequently. Not only does it please them, but can invite them into your life and make them more willing to work with you, or be in favor. Its a gesture of honor and goodwill, and shows you are willing to give freely. You can give foods, drinks, sacrifices, incense, burn a candle, make them something. You can also give non-physical offerings such as energy, or sing them a song you wrote for them. It’s quite limitless, and you can use your imagination!

Get to know their personality and what they like. Do research. There’s lots of resources out there. What color do they prefer? What is their element? What is their patron animal? Patron flower? Do they have a sigil? What do they NOT like? What should you avoid when working with them? All these are helpful when invoking a deity or trying to get them to favor you. 

Talk to them on a regular basis. Ask them questions. Be sincere with what you want out of your relationship with them. Even if you do not get an answer, it does not mean they aren’t listening. 

Set Boundaries. This is more for working with nature spirits, ghosts, and daemons, or things of the like. It’s alright to ask them to come at a different time, or to tell them to leave. Sometimes, you might need to offer a libation (i.e. I’ll give you  bay leaves if you promise not to come in my dreams anymore). 

Learn defensive magick. This, again, is mostly for working with nature spirits, ghosts, and daemons. Make sure you know what you are doing, and do not start something first. Although you might feel threatened, it does not mean they are malicious or trying to hurt you. Test the energy first, and if you are unwelcomed, leave. You do not want to be powerless against something much, much more powerful than yourself, and you definitively do not want to start something with an entity much more powerful than yourself. This is a last resort. 

Keep your magickal space clean. Smudge it regularly to get rid of negativity. Nature spirits do not like unclean areas, especially earth spirits. They will take your things and hide them, or they will disappear altogether. Place protective symbols on your doors, windows, and mirrors. Look into hoodoo and voodoo floor washes if you can, and keep it tidy and looking neat. Recharge your area regularly. 

Keep an open-mind. Some spirits just down right hate humans, but have valuable lessons to tell and can be interesting to see as to why they hate us so much. Others like to help and guide us, and can shed new light on situations or turn them around completely. Some may have a very strong dark energy that you might not fully understand, or some may intimidate you. Sometimes a deity will not be what you are expecting, and can frighten you, but remember: they do not go by our human morals or ethics, for they are not of this plane or humanly world. 

Be gracious. Give thanks to them, if they were willing to talk or make their presence known. Even if they do not, thank them for listening. Don’t forget about them and put them on the ‘back burner’ because that may infuriate them.

More and more I’ve been getting requests for my own personal rituals and altars. So what you’re looking at now is my altar which is honouring Cernunnos and Aphrodite tonight.  The incense is sandalwood. On the left, we have flowers to Cernunnos: Feather Reed Grass and black eyed Susans tied into a gourd leaf from my garden, symbolizing the coming harvest. Also present are antlers. On the right, we have flowers to Aphrodite: Butterfly bush, perovskia, and various colours of roses wrapped with a red ribbon. Also present is a shell and a jade bear (whose symbolism is personal, and doesn’t really matter in this context. But you need to expand the photo to see the whole thing). On both sides of the altar, for each Deity, we have a chalice filled with white Australian Reisling, and a candle from my God and Goddess altar (you may recognize the green one from my previous altar post). In the centre is my offering bowl filled with oregano, summer savoury and tomatoes. All the offerings are from my garden, flowers and all. Colored Glass || DIY Puff Paint Lanterns

Blue and gold for a Khaleesi, perhaps, like her Qartheen armored dress bodices and belts. Or red, orange and gold puff paint with the outline of the Martell Sun & Spear Sigil.

Even if you’re not honoring the Khaleesi, these lanterns might be great additions to Hearth Shrines, Kitchen Shrines, or even painted with Sigils, imbued with energies, and hung around the house for various purposes.

Materials:

old glass jars (spaghetti jars, jam jars or any plain glass jar will work)

gold dimensional puff paint

glass paint (Delta or Pebeo Vitrea glass paint are great options)

paintbrush

wire (optional, for hanging lanterns)

Directions:

Remove labels and any glue residue from the glass jars and allow them to dry completely.

Apply the gold dimensional paint in various patterns. You can use the applicator tip to create small stud-like dots, draw various decorative patterns or push around the paint to create solid areas of gold. Let dry

Pour a small amount of glass paint inside the jar and use your paintbrush to drag the paint up the sides of the jar, coating all of the jar’s interior. Let dry.

Your lanterns are now ready to enjoy indoors or out! Simply fill them with candles or add loops of fine-gauge wire to the tops for easy hanging.
