To be honest this isn't really anything ahaha. Just me writing out my thoughts so I can properly organize and structure them(And it still ended up being majorly disorganised whoops)
Alright, so the latest bout of chapters have let us know that Yugi mom became both abusive and lowkey crazy(Copious amounts of religious items left strewn about the house in 130, and Amane's own words as well) While on the other hand the dad was confirmed to have checked out on them completely(Also interesting considering the newspaper clippings talked about 4 people dying in the house)
Okay, so the Yugi family is in shambles, and that's not even taking into account the messy, complicated relationship between Amane and Tsukasa-Where I believe miscommunication and a lack of understanding of the other is the main crux of the problem.
But has their relationship always been so tense?
Amane has always believed that something was off with Tsukasa since day 1 of him returning from his 6 month disappearance
This was the moment the seed of doubt was sowed in his mind. However, while Amane was left questioning and wondering who the person that returned that night really was, he never did reach a solid answer, not for a lot more years at least. And it seems that doubt hasn't impacted the way he acts with Tsukasa....yet.
I do honestly find it sweet and a bit tragic that considering how short their lives ended up being, for the majority of that time they honestly seemed to... Get along very well. It's interesting to think about, considering how much of their present-day dynamic is defined by how complicated their feelings towards one another are.
I mean, just look at them! 🥹 We now know that their home situation... Wasn't the best. But it's nice to know they at least had each other.
Obviously, it's hard to glean the full scope of their situation from just a handful of panels and images, but everything we have been shown about them from that in-between time after Tsukasa's return and before Kamome Academy does portray them as getting along well.
Those brief flashes of images highlight them being normal brothers, going all the way up to their orientation day for middle school.
That flashback of them during orientation shows Tsukasa as carefree; Amane as awkward, but they look comfortable with each other.
To put some things into perspective: The Japanese academic school year starts in April. So we can assume their orientation was either then or in March, and we all know the school festival was in September
5 months was all it took for their relationship to suddenly go from this
Isn't that strange? Isn't that odd? 12 years of their life they seem to be caring and loving towards one another but that dynamic just drastically shifts.
When they start attending Kamome Academy
Kamome Academy. Resident hot-spot for supernatural phenomena.
1968 Amane seems to think that his brother is not his brother, that the Tsukasa he's known the past 8 years is not Tsukasa. He's reached his conclusion and wants to fix the clock in an attempt to travel back in time and save his 'real' brother.
This is the driving force behind his reasons for time travel; something Hanako had ended up forgetting due to blocked memories
Leading to the discrepancy between 12 year old Amane already being firm that Tsukasa is a 'fake' while Hanako only reaches that conclusion much much later
But why? What led to 12 year old Amane suddenly throwing his full weight into the belief that Tsukasa has been a fake all along?
Could be anything, honestly! Possibilities are endless.
I'm not saying Amane and Tsukasa's dynamic was all sunshine and rainbows during their early years, I'm sure there were unresolved issues that continued to fester, but the wedge between them seemed to only take a cavernous divide once they enrolled at Kamome Academy, which does lead me to believe that something supernatural played its hand in the deterioration of their relationship and Amane's switch-up.
We do know the flow of time does become unstable around the time of the school festival... Did Amane catch a glimpse of something that spurred him on to fix that big clock and time travel? Maybe. Maybe not.
And thinking about 1969... We know absolutely nothing about their relation towards one another then. Though I think it's safe to say their relationship just further deteriorated as time went on all the way up to the murder.
Okay now some quick thoughts on Amane and his whole perception of the 'Fake Tsukasa' stuff and also just kinda on Amane himself:
Amane's resolve is very strong; but his beliefs are incredibly shaky.
Tsukasa even calls the latter out on him twice
Now of course, we shouldn't always take a characters word on another character as fact; TBHK has already proven that one's beliefs are not reality, and the central theme with the Yugi twins are both having a fundamental lack of understanding of the other.
However! Tsukasa is spot on about Amane's indecisiveness and contradictory nature.
When Tsukasa asks him this he ignores the question, choosing not to answer and instead go back to work. He's being avoidant of the topic and his feelings
Despite Amane declaring Tsukasa a 'fake' like only seconds prior he still immediately goes into a protective stance once Kako threatens him.
I don't think he's absolutely confident about Tsukasa being a fake. Deep down, there's a part of him buried beneath everything that knows there's no fake and real Tsukasa. Tsukasa is Tsukasa. He just doesn't accept it; latching onto the idea that his 'real' brother is gone and this one's an imposter.
We can't take anything Amane says at face value. He tends to either mask his true feelings or tries to desperately convince himself of something he doesn't truly believe deep down(Like him trying to convince himself that Yashiro's death wouldn't affect him early on in the manga and that he doesn't gaf despite us all knowing that's bullshit LMAO)
He's extremely poor at processing and coping with his emotions, which results in him being extremely avoidant of them.
But as I said before, he harbours a very strong resolve. Emotions he can't deal with but action he can take. 1968 Amane does everything in his power to fix something out of his control, going back in time all in the hopes of 'saving Tsukasa'
Current day Hanako's feelings on Tsukasa are extremely complicated but again, he's adamant on saving him and will do everything in his power to do so.
He may have given up on himself, won't fight for himself but he will fight tooth and nail for others.
He disregards his own emotions because he's incapable of confronting them, choosing to instead laser-focus on the steps he needs to take to achieve his end goal as well as the end goal itself. Throwing himself into whatever work needs to be put in towards it. And his ignorance and avoidance of his own feelings ends up harming both himself and the people around him.
Anyway can't wait for the moment he accepts that Tsukasa is Tsukasa oooh that'll be fun to seeeee
I swear I'm forgetting something but you know what they sayyyy if you forget it in the first place then it obviously wasn't that important.
Anyway. Questions, questions, questions! Aidairo loves to give us an answer to like one thing that proceeds to open five new things to explore in the wake of it. I am very glad we're getting ample amounts of Yugi lore this arc and can't wait to see the direction they take with it!
Again, all of this was written in good fun and Is purely speculation plus my own personal interpretation of events.
Excuse any grammatical mistakes I don't want to reread this again aha
