We are a DID system who loves to create! This is a blog for us to share our creations to easily look back on!

We are 24 and use They/Them pronouns for our collective! You’re welcome to ask who is fronting or posting at any time. All of us have different names and pronouns, but as a catch all you can call us Sidewalk/Sidewalk Chalk or Luna!

We’ve always been creative and we love picking up new hobbies! Currently we’re really into crochet. We also have a battle jacket that has been in the works for a while now!

Now that this project has been delivered to its recipient, I can brag about it online a little.

I made this Elizabethan petal hussif for a friend who received an award for her historical costuming work. Hussifs were often used as sewing kits with spots for all of the notions you need for a project. Wives would send them with their husbands to war with extra uniform buttons and repair supplies. This one has an inner pouch area that can fit a small project or pieces thereof.

My friend likes owls, pomegranates, blurple, and starlight. Hopefully this mashup harmonizes nicely. I worked almost entirely from scraps already in my stash.

I self drafted the pattern, but it's approximated from this write up and Sheila Marshall's book "Elizabethan Needlework Accessories". My library didn't have the book, so I relied on Google images.

This little owl friend is a needle minder by greennerddesigns on Etsy. I chopped up a pin and stuck a magnet on there.

The lucette braided cord nearly thwarted me, but we got there in the end. I opted for fancy silk ribbon for the inner pouch instead. I swear lucette gave me arthritis.

I'm still pretty new to embroidery, so this was a real level up project for me. I used wool felt for the leaves and pomegranates to give them a little dimensionality (and to better hide any satin stitch sins) TIL, embroidering velveteen sucks.

The pomegranates are so crunchy! I fondled them frequently throughout the making of this. But the lattice stitch with tiny gold details is my favorite part.

The laurels are a symbol of the award she's receiving. I don't love how they turned out, but they hold up okay from a distance.

Blue beads are from my local embroidery shop, Country Crafts. Silver loops came from my stash. Owl scissors from onethriftystitcher on Etsy. Wool pieces are from my local wool store Black Sheep Wool.

Overall, I have some improvements to make if I ever do another one, but after some 100 hours of work poured into this little guy, I couldn't be more proud of myself. I hope she loves it and uses it until it falls apart.

Scriptorium cat collection is now in my shop!!! With criossanna (trad Irish belts), bookmarks, and patches inspired by the medieval Irish poem Pangur Bán and the inky cat paws left on medieval manuscripts. The pattern using the pick up weaving method is also available!

After 9 months of work, my Oseberg tapestry sweater is complete!

This was my first sweater knitted in the round, first stranded colourwork project, and my first time steeking. It was definitely my most challenging project so far, and a lot of learning and research was involved. I used a colourwork chart created by the very talented Molly Gifford, which is available for free on Ravelry

For reference, this is one of the fragments uncovered from the gravesite:

Some scholars think that the Oseberg tapestry includes the earliest known artistic depiction of Odin's ravens, Huginn and Muninn. So I added them to the sleeves as a little Easter egg.

I finished the last constellation tonight. All 40 of them are now done! Went through and double checked and every stitch is in place for them and all the beads are in place. Which just leaves the milky way part to do.

This is the most technically proficient pottery throwing I've ever seen. The economy of motion? Literally everything in one pull, one squeeze. Absolutely no even minor touch ups required. This shit is like watching a skilled magician even as someone who knows how to throw on the wheel. I am watching this the way that someone who is great at a few card tricks watches Penn and Teller.

One Year

2025, block prints on hand dyed cotton

i finally wrapped up this year long project. i started HRT on december 8th, 2023. i went into it initially scared to death of needles and the concept of self injection. I decided to carve a stamp of my testosterone vial, and add a stamp to fabric after every shot as a sort of gold star “good job!” achievement. after a month, the fear was gone but i continued stamping. this quilt shows the number of shots I took across a 1 year period.

quilting always speaks to me as a trans person. a needle bringing together layers upon layers of fabric, making something new out of something preexisting, the slight discomfort of a finger prick (ow!) that’s easily forgotten when you stand back and see the repetition of stitches has made something you’re excited to see. my art quilts are usually about nature, but I always see myself in them :)

this quilt was initially conceptualized for a way for me to express pain and frustration with the healthcare system, with a physician who had promised me access to HRT when I was ready, only to massively walk her knowledge back when I was ready to start the process. hurtling through what seemed like an endless cycle of referrals, insurance calls, years long waitlists, medication backorders and more, i initially planned on stamping a vial for every week i missed a shot in frustration. i am glad i finally gained access to the miracle that is HRT, but at the same time I feel immense sadness, pain, and fear, both personally and for the rest of the trans community who are unsure of what our access to this miracle will look like in the near future.

i am holding tight to my trans siblings right now. i love you!

If I have learned anything from doing fiber crafts it is to just dive right in and make the thing. You can do all the research, buy the right yarn, gauge swatch and plan your projects to the best of your ability and still make mistakes

Just make the thing. Give yourself grace when you mess up, then learn from it.

you are six years old learning about poems and you think about the first time you saw your father cry so you write about the rain. you are eleven facing the trauma of adolescence so you draw mermaids. you are fifteen and you fall in love for the first time and make a clay sculpture in art class for them even though you're unsure they’ll ever receive it. you are twenty and thirty and fourty and you are learning a different type of grief every year so you pick a pen or a brush or a flute and you make something because it's all you can do. my grandmother makes quilts out of my old baby clothes despite not knowing her own birthday. art and love and creation exist on the same line.

Mini mushroom sewing pattern:

Mini Mushroom Friend Pattern: 1/4" seam allowance is included in the pattern. The dotted line indicates that but is not actually drawn at the 1/4" mark, I just freehanded it (I did measure it on the original pattern)

Cutting instructions:

-cut two (one the reverse of the other) of the body piece -cut four (two reversed) of the arm patterns, if you are adding arms -cut four of the mushroom top piece of your choice (tall or dome shaped. These pieces are symmetrical so you don't have to reverse them) -cut four of the corresponding mushroom cap bottom that goes with the cap shape you chose (these pieces are also symmetrical and do not need to be reversed)

Sewing instructions:

If you are adding arms, take a pair of arm pieces, right side together, and sew aroud the curved outside edge, leaving the short flat section unsewn. Turn right side out through that section and add some stuffing to the "hand" part. Repeat for the second arm

Take the pair of body pieces, put them right sides together, and sew along the curved edges, leaving the short flat section unsewn. Turn right side out through that opening, add some stuffing to the bottom half but leave the top half unstuffed for now

Take a pair of your mushroom cap top pieces, right side together, and sew from the top point to the bottom edge but do not sew along the curved bottom edge. Repeat for the second pair.

Stack the two pairs you just sewed on top of each other, right sides together, making sure the seams align. Sew from one bottom edge, up to the top point, and back down to the other bottom edge. Set this aside for now

Take a pair of your mushroom cap bottom pieces, right side together, and sew from the middle point to the outer edge but do not sew along the curved outer edge. Repeat with the second pair

Stack the two pairs you just sewed on top of each other, right sides together, making sure the seams align. Your opening for turning will be in the middle of this seam; sew the outer edges at least 1/2", but make sure you leave enough in the middle of this seam unsewn so you can turn the mushroom cap right side out later

Take the mushroom cap bottom and put it right side up. Take the mushroom cap top, right side down, and put it on top of the mushroom cap bottom, making sure the curved outer edges line up. Sew along the outer edges, not leaving an opening for turning

Turn right side out, add stuffing, and sew closed the opening for turning

Assembly time! Take your mushroom body and your mushroom cap, and now you are going to experiment with adding more stuffing, tucking the seam allowance at the top of the body in, and cap angles until you find one you like. For now, pin it in place. While it's pinned, add the face (this can be safety eyes, embroidery, applique, whatever you want). The face placement varies wildly depending on preference, height of the mushroom, and arm placement. To aid in face placement, you might want to tuck the top seam allowance of the arms inside them and pin the arms in place as well (again, experiment with placement). Once your mushroom face is complete, sew the cap and body together, and sew on the arms (if using)

Fun fact! Revival of Dhaka Muslin has been ongoing for quite some time. The headline of the above article is very very misleading, we know exactly how Dhaka Muslin was made. The process was very well documented. We know how it was made, but colonialism ruined the fabric's production area and devalued the skills needed to make it such that they no longer existed. But the process itself was not lost.

That being said, efforts to bring it back are underway, and they have been making amazing progress, and succeed in creating Dhaka Muslin yet again.

The Muslin Miracle: A passion for revival

It all began with a search for ‘phuti karpas’ – muslin’s unique cotton plant which is known to have become extinct. However, starting in 201

This is a pretty good updated article, it has a lot of the same info as the BCC one (which also discusses some of the revival efforts) but with more of a focus on that process, an update to the story, and it details some of the other ongoing projects working on the revival!

Here's the first weaver to manage to produce a finished piece in nearly 200 years, Al Amin.

His first piece was 300 threads, according to the article they have now been able to get into the 700s for thread counts, which is absolutely incredible.

Several projects are actually underway now each with different weavers and slightly different methods, producing fabric intended to meet or best the original!

And if you're curious, "okay but can it pass through a ring" yes! Yes they can!

It's a very time consuming process, and a very expensive fabric to purchase, but love and passion for it have been steadily bringing it back!
