I love how the trick-or-treating scene implies that not only do the neighborhood adults and children feel comfortable interacting with Lestat on a nightly basis (despite his eccentricities), but that Lestat has made an effort in becoming such a member of the community. Like, bro was going full Regina George, but he had the decency to pause, go out and buy candy, and answer the door for trick-or-treaters. And not just any amount of candy, but a full-on bucket.

I like to think the neighborhood children view him as like a crazy uncle. Like, "Yeah, that is our neighbor Lestat. We've never seen him outside during the day, Mom swears she saw a coffin being delivered to his apartment, and I'm pretty sure I heard him sobbing into his pillow the other night. But he plays some sick piano bars and gives out the on-brand candy, so he's cool."

Love Astrid and Eadwulf’s presence in almost every episode. Show up. Do something ethically heinous. Villain pose. Think longingly about Bren. And you just know Eadwulf’s gonna make a quip. And then they leave. They’re like Team Rocket if Team Rocket was actually evil and if Meowth was the long lost 3rd member of their throuple.

The more I think about how completely the cast changed Essek’s original role and purpose in the story, the more I cackle. He was seemingly intended to be an antagonist, a shocking betrayal that their reaction to could well have turned him even more villainous. But instead they understand him and while they don’t trust him, they want to see him make better choices, especially Caleb. Okay, Matt rolls with it.

And when they finally meet up with him later, Matt verbally and clearly reminds them that Essek committed war crimes but they say 'yeah we all regret some of our actions' and proceed to tell him almost everything that's happened and ask for his help. I wonder if that's the moment Matt mentally threw his hands up and went 'okay so the war criminal is getting a redemption arc!' Its so obviously not what he intended for Essek and the players completely changed Essek’s trajectory.

But here's the thing, Matt made a hugely powerful and talented wizard who has been fooled into making terribly destructive choices. He has a fierce desire for knowledge and learning and he desperately needs actual genuine affection and people to help him learn how to have friends and how to be a friend. Matt made a Dynasty hot boi elf version of Caleb, who'd made a much more reprehensible choice about collateral, yes but of course the Nein were going to want to redeem him and remain friends with him. They know that like Caleb, he can make better choices and can become a better person. They've been doing this already with Caleb, and Caleb sees someone a few steps behind him on the same road, someone who he knows is therefore supremely dangerous but who can also start to leave the world a better place, like Caleb is.

Maybe Matt thought this would make Essek an excellent villain for Caleb to face off against, who Caleb could have been if he hadn't been broken and run. But it turns out he made a pretty perfect partner for Caleb instead, and another member of the Mighty Nein. And Matt never saw that coming. So I cackle and I love it.

Superman (2025) persuasively sells you on something most other recent superhero movies don't, which is that a world with Superman is better off in meaningful ways than a world without.

It would fucking suck to live in the Marvel Universe as a non-superhero. You can identify with the protagonists, you can fantasize about being Tony Stark or whoever, but if you think about the civilians in those movies, the randos killed by the robot or sucked into the portal, it's hard to see the existence of superheroes as a net positive. They mostly seem to clean up problems that wouldn't have occurred in the first place without their egos and mistakes. Superman has a different emphasis though. The fantasy isn't just about having superpowers yourself, but about what if the natural disaster equivalent only did property damage, what if military aggression could be stopped in its tracks without a single civilian casualty, what if the evillest people in the world actually got their comeuppance.

It really meets the moment. I think a lot of us are wishing someone with power would do Literally Anything for the public good.
