again i dont have anything for ootbs birthday but heres some little bits from past attempts to rework the first chapter

so today is actually out of the blues tenth birthday

i wasnt gonna make a post about it because for one, thinking about that gives me an existential crisis, and two, i wouldve liked to have something to post for it. but unfortunately all my ootb time is spent (VERY SLOWLY) drawing the actual comic itself.

ootb is so odd in a lot of ways. its not really the kind of comic i wouldve made on my own. it started out as a present for a friend that was only gonna be a few pages long but i just kept messing with it and i guess never stopped. it was originally going several different directions (felixs dad was gonna show up at several points as a bit of a roadblock/felix was gonna meet a group of flood survivors/i was maybe gonna squeeze some other merpeople in there at some point) before i finally stopped and cut the whole thing down to the bones. you would think a comic with only three speaking characters that dont move around a lot would be easy but its kind of a terrible choice for a first comic. if i had a nickel for every time i wished mack or felix could hop in a car...

even after all these years i still think of ootb as a rough draft. it was always supposed to be a stepping stone into learning how to do other comics. i just havent gotten off that first step despite having at least three other comics roughly planned. and yet i still plan on going back and reworking large chunks of ootb and simplifying and recontextualizing a lot of things so its a more complete version of itself. (i actually have most of it written out i just want to sketch all the pages and format them into a comic book before i start really drawing it) but who knows when that will be. ootb is an extremely simple story that shouldve been done years ago but it seems like every year its taken me longer and longer to do just one page. who knows.

at any rate, id still like to finish it. i am going to finish it. its pretty much leading up to its ending right now. well i guess thats true of any story isnt it.

a ton of people have unexpectedly followed me over the last 2 days so here is my rent-lowering gunshot:

the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.
