Autumn 10/21/2022
I thought today about a villanelle I had an inspiration there and then I wrote this in a spreadsheet in Excel
It’s hard to keep the poems rigid shell On track inside my mind, so when I thought today about a villanelle
I thought about refrains re-rung like bells And how simple it might be to begin; I wrote this in a spreadsheet in Excel
The line below these two, I brag to tell Is simply coded as =A1 I thought today about a villanelle
And this stanza’s refrain, I needn’t spell It out; it equals A3 and is done! I wrote this in a spreadsheet in Excel
I planned to use this better, really sell The bit; but flew too closely to the sun. I thought today about a villanelle I wrote this in a spreadsheet in Excel
[Description: The above text is pictured in individual cells in column A of an Excel spreadsheet. The sheet’s title in the workbook is “Sheet Two Villanelle” and to prove the truth of how it was constructed, Cell A23 is selected; at the top of the image you can see that it does not actually contain any text, but just the Excel formula “=A1″. This is probably Art, somehow.]
All the small things
Let me know they care
Little details in stonework
A flower stuck in your hair
How you carry yourself
And laugh
And maybe because you show me
What I could be.
Lovely.
I feel so inspired and so distraught at the same time,
surrounded by intelligent minds
who value beauty and art and human signs.
After walking miles of road traveled alone,
I’ve longed to feel community, camaraderie,
But words and acts can worlds apart,
So I fear a low supply of compassion
When demands run high.
Perfectionism whispers never being Good Enough,
As if success is a prize my pride depends on,
A trophy of being worthy,
That I can parade to others
Like a bowl of alms
Begging for satiation and salvation.
A Pythagorean cup,
I isolate between self acceptance
and high pressure, unsure,
siphoning any sense peace
And leaving a hungry ache.
A parody of tantalus in a modern age,
Where internal drama stirs tragic thoughts,
and out of desperation
I fake my role on the worldwide stage.
But fear I’m not enough.
warm and humid fall afternoon by the river
//october 2024//
Let’s take a trip to a different city;
Say we’re on a conference trip and
Walk down paved boulevards
taking in architecture of somewhere new
While the sunset paints the air
and I feel the warmth of our shoulders pressing
Together like the townhouses up the street.
We’ll feel each others laughters swell and
Make music in our ears.
With a heightened awareness
Well forget the world forbids it,
Forget responsibilities and fear.
And be together just for awhile
Because I know your soul knows mine
And in some way
We were meant to know each other here.
All day you’ve danced across my mind.
Chausséed and pirouetted your way into my thoughts,
And I presume it will continue all night
where I’ll dream of spinning you into my arms
Where we’ll move in time with aching grins staining magenta lips
paired with wanton craving to place my hands on moving hips
strong hands and strong words guide me through strange changes,
And fancy footwork fuels allegro fantasies coupled by the compassionate and courageous
I’ve reflected on the words that have danced off your tongue; Complexity performed smooth and trained,
I’ve reveled in the memory of the laugh your throat gives up. I try to observe and absorb the choreography of you brain.
I cogitate the impression your cognition made on me,
And wrestle with why a fascination with your intelligence makes my heart pound out a beat.
I promised you a house of roses red,
But green envy had built walls high with thorn.
A key to my loves residence I’d sworn,
But bleeding heart who pricked itself instead
Made messes out of our sacred bed.
we held too tight to expectations worn;
love held too tight becomes a love to mourn.
the burning passion’s fire can quickly spread
and friction sparks a burning last collapse
of the roof under regret’s heavy weights.
We loved too much too brightly and perhaps
the Heat of worry melted rose gold gates.
The Roses wilted, black like coal they lied,
The house abandoned, our love has died. l
Context: I wrote a love poem several years ago about promising my love a house of a thousand roses. Color was a major motif. After heartbreak and years apart, I wanted to experiment with sonnets and this poem came about.

Meet me under the lavender sky, where the sunflowers take time to grow.
You and I, we’ll take our time, to be together, walking slow.
Feeling cold breezes with warm hands entwined, Watching fireflies dance and glow
For a moment we’ll be alright, before I have to let you go.
if you like my poems let them walk in the evening, a little behind you
if you like my poems let them, e. e. cummings
Friends come and they go.
What matters is you hold them
Gently. Kindly. Close.
