She woke slowly. It was a sore process. It was so dark. There was a weird sound in the air. A strange, gasping, wheezing thin noise.
She tried to move, but found something was pinning her down. A lead weight against her chest.
She opened her mouth and it was instantly filled with dirt.
The first bubbles of panic were starting to rise up from her stomach.
It was hard to breathe. So dark she couldnât be sure her eyes were open.
She had come to the Carteneau Plains with the Alliance... a jumble of memories...
Hard, dirty, thankless work. So far away from the endless moonlit skies of the deserts. Death and murder and death and slaughter and a gleeful joy in the horror of it all. Death and the glory of her strong body and sharp weapons ripping the enemy apart. Look away beautiful moonlit skies! Look away from what your daughter is doing to these wicked mortals!
Moonlit skies... moonlit... Moon...
A moon had fallen. The world had churned and tumbled together.
Oh goddess help me. She was trapped. Trapped under a great pile of mud and bodies thrown up by the falling moon. The darkness pressing all around her were armoured, broken people. People she knew. People she didnât. People she had wanted to kill. Now they were all crushing her. Filling her mouth with blood and slime.
The gasping, wheezing, thin noise came from her. Came from the bodies around her. Those still living. Desperately clinging on.
A dreadful noise above her. A shift in the weight around her.
The crush increased painfully. Everyone cried out.
Please, please I donât want to die here. Iâll never hurt anyone again. Please save me.
A blinding shaft of light. The crunching sound of armour plates grinding together. Someone moving the bodies. Foul, smokey air filling her nose. It smelt so good.
Someone pulling her out of the mire. Cradled. Held. Saved.
Laughing and crying. Not caring about the hellish landscape around. Iâm alive, Iâm alive.
A noise she never forgot. Could sometimes still hear it. Handing out spells. Chatting to family around the camp fires. Living free and happy under moonlit skies. Then from the darkness...
And the thought this was all a fever dream. She was still under the bodies at Carteneau.
