Strange Character Quirks Part One

☽ characters who pause mid-sentence like someone else is feeding them the words on a delay.

☽ someone who always knows the exact time without checking anything, and insists they “just feel it.”

☽ a person who cleans their glasses even when they’re not wearing any.

☽ characters who laugh at the wrong punchline, like they’re listening to a different conversation entirely.

☽ someone who claims they don’t dream, but always seems tired, like they’re busy somewhere else.

☽ a person who collects lost buttons and refuses to explain why. “You’ll understand eventually.”

☽ someone who never seems surprised by anything, even things they shouldn’t possibly know about.

☽ characters who compulsively straighten objects, except one item they always leave crooked. No one touches it.

☽ a person who flinches when certain names are spoken, but pretends they don’t recognize them.

☽ characters whose handwriting changes depending on their mood… or depending on who’s “in charge.”

☽ someone who treats shadows like they’re alive, stepping around them as if they could bruise.

PS: I wrote the other day about how important ratings and reviews are for authors… and no joke, afterward I actually got two new ratings on my books. And yes, I can already hear some people saying, “It’s just two.” But I don’t care. I’m stupidly grateful.

fun behaviors to give dragons that aren't feline/canine based

cause as much as i love dragons purring and roaring i wish there was just more variety in how they would act

clacking their teeth together to show contentedness/happiness (budgies)

using tails as a defensive weapon in a whip like fashion (iguana)

twitching to express that they're not a threat to members of their species (hognose snake)

feeling calm when eyes are hooded/covered (birds of prey)

head bobbing as a threat display (anoles/bearded dragons)

flattening neck or sides to appear bigger (snakes/lizards)

mantling over food to protect it from hatchmates (birds of prey)

wiggling neck as a courting maneuver (budgies)

audibly grinding teeth as a warning (macaques)

maintained eye contact as a challenge (gorillas)

pounding wings against sides as a threat (gorillas)

slapping other dragons with their claws when their personal bubble is invaded (seals)

hoards used as a site to impress mates (birds of paradise)

snorting when undergoing heightened stress (horses)

making repeated loud noises with surroundings to establish territory (woodpeckers)

loud constant arguments with other dragons when roosting (bats)

building lairs that cause a domino effect of change in the land around them (beavers)

slapping their tails against the ground/water as a warning (beavers)

wiggling tail tip to attract prey (various animals)

plucking or scraping off scales as a sign of stress (parrots)

raising spines/frills as a response to danger and carrying on with their usual business as they believe they're protected (lionfish)

and im not saying canine and feline behaviors are wrong or bad to give a dragon (people wouldn't write dragons with those behaviors if they weren't fun in the first place!) but i feel for creatures that are mythological giant winged lizards that you can do more and get experimental with it. often the more unfamiliar behavior the more dragony the dragon feels

Basic trouble shooting for people who aren't mechanics and have no interest in becoming one:

1. Does it have a spiny part that's not spinning, or isn't spinning the way it's supposed to? Look at it- is there anything stringy wound around the spiny part? Remove it. Applies to: vacuums, aquarium filters, blenders, and rototillers, weed eaters, and lawn mowers.

1.b Is there debris from the spiny part that is building up on an nearby surface? Remove it. Applies to: vacuums, lawnmowers, probably other things.

2. Does it have a part that air, water, or other materials move through? Look at it- is there a clog, even a small or flimsy looking one? Remove it. Applies to: lawnmowers, vacuums, pumps, probably more.

3. If it has a gas engine, does it have gas? The right kind of gas? Does it have oil? If it's electric, is it plugged in? Or is it's battery charged?

4. Does it have a filter? Is the filter dirty/clogged? Clean it. Applies to vacuums, pumps, and some small engines.

5. Is it electric? Is there a safety feature where it won't work unless a certain peice is in place? Is there something keeping it from popping up or into place? Remove it. Did a small plastic peice break off? Can you super glue it back on in a safe manner?

6. Are there fluid tanks? Do they have fluid levels between the empty and full marks?

7. Are there tubes and/or wires? Are they all attached and going where they're supposed to? If it has spark plugs, are they all where they're supposed to be? If it has belts, are they taut?

8. Are there bolts and nuts? Screws? Are they all where they're supposed to be?

1 & 2 really are responsible for about 80% of the issues I run into. For gas engines, 3 is surprisingly common.
