MY PROBLEM WITH SATINE KRYZE ( Doylist Perspective)
DISCLAIMER: I am aware that she is a complex written female character who may receive hate because of that, this is not what this post is about.
I lowkey hate when people say that everyone who hates Satine is a misogynist, I do think that there is a large audience particularly men who do not like her for that reason, but this statement also glosses over the real and accurate criticisms of her character, because Satine herself is the primary factor in why her rule of Mandalore failed.
Moreover I think the frustration in a lot of people when it comes to her is that she is never confronted in a meaningful way about this, despite the fact she has close relationships with two of the most politically savvy people in the show (Padme and Obi-Wan). The narrative treats her as a victim of circumstances rather than a politician who chose to be blind to the consequences of her policies.
This also contributes to why I myself can not enjoy the ship between Satine and Obi-Wan because as they are in their adulthood, not only are they not compatible, but they are unable to address any of Satine’s shortcomings more than a quip. Which seems widely out of character for Obi-Wan even if he is supposed to love her (I do not believe by the time of Clone Wars he is still in love with her but does love her in a way)
This is just a short Doylist break down of my problems with Satines character I have a longer Watsonian break down of her actual psychology and the belief system she operates under.
it’s relatively common fanon that jedi aren’t very physically affectionate with each other, and that may be true and that’s fine, but I like to think that physical affection not being expected or on any kind of pedestal also affects the culture inversely, where casual intimacy is also no big deal for jedi, and overt physical displays of affection might not be thought of bc everyone is already so used to taking care of each other. jedi will bathe their mission partner after a particular rough assignment. only one bed? we’re jedi, we didn’t even notice, maybe a pillow wall if we care about personal space. lost my socks? I can ask my neighbor for a pair even if it’s the second time we’ve spoken, that’s my fellow jedi:)
as someone with ARFID i really couldn't care less about the distinction between "picky eaters" and "genuine eating issues." if you are an asshole to someone you see as "just picky" i will never, ever trust you. i've lived through the trauma of being shamed and humiliated for my eating needs.
frankly i think a LOT of "picky eaters" have some kind of sensory problems– autistic or allistic– and shame is never useful. i don't fucking care how annoying you think we are. if you've never lived through the humiliation of being the only one not eating at a dinner table, or having to choke down something disgusting you already know you hate because other people insist you don't know your own body, or getting a hunger migraine in a house full of food because none of its edible to you? you don't understand how awful it is to have food issues.
whenever i see people draw this distinction between being "just a picky eater" and "having a real problem" all i think is, who does this serve? most people don't even know ARFID exists. there are so many undiagnosed autistics, or just people with a variety of issues that aren't officially diagnosed. why do we need a medical label in order to be treated with respect and compassion? why did i need to be diagnosed as autistic for my family to realize the abuse they put me through for years because of my eating habits?
it's such an easy habit for neglected groups to fall into– the idea that a medical diagnosis can save us. that by appealing to the medical/psychiatric industry, we can be protected from abuse and given basic respect and resources. but the truth is that it should never have come to this in the first place. dignity doesn't come from an abled doctor telling you that there's a medical reason for your symptoms. it comes from being a person. once you accept that you need a Good Reason to have your needs respected, you doom yourself to neglecting and abusing those who have your same struggles because they aren't lucky enough to access medical recognition.
tl;dr solidarity with all "picky eaters" stop guilting people for having varying food needs, if we make you irrationally angry that's YOUR problem not ours, and abolish "children's menus" & replace them with simple-food / small-portion menus for people of all ages
Yo i was scrolling down on ur blog and you said you have some battle droid headcannons? Would luv to see them!
ALRIGHTY SO
i can’t claim complete credit for this idea ‘cause my brother is friends with a dumbass 30 year old who is sort of a whiny fandom baby (he has some Opinions™ about everything but the original trilogy and i haven’t met him but if i did i’d fistfight him) BUT my brother told me this when i was very first just getting back into star wars around march, i don’t think i had even started writing anything for it yet (i think i was still in casmund hell? lord i should probably finish that......) and i was so attached to the idea that i sort of just. forgot it wasn’t canon? especially by the time i started writing prequel stuff? a lot of my early prompt answers have these headcanons as, well, canon.
basically my brother’s friend was (rightfully) confused how the trade federation could have built up a droid army of that size without interference when the republic surely had laws against standing armies, and for the most part, the trade federation was pretty legitimate as a franchise.
so. what if they... weren’t a droid army? what if the b1 droids weren’t originally intended for battle? WHAT IF they were production droids? that palpatine/sidious convinced the trade federation to reprogram and arm them? it would explain an awful lot about how incompetent b1 droids are? all the time?
if the trade federation made a butt ton of production/factory droids, that wouldn’t trip any republic flags the way battle droids would. now i don’t think the same could be said for the b2s, but my brother posits: bodyguard droids. mass producing factory workers and bodyguards wouldn’t look all that strange for merchants, right?
as for the destroyers, and obi-wan and qui-gon immediately recognising them at the beginning of phantom menace, i like to think the trade federation bought those and didn’t produce them themselves, perhaps from the geonosians who iirc weren’t part of the republic then(?), but were producing all three droids by the time of the clone wars, after the federation was disenfranchised at the end of the invasion of naboo.
this same brother and i have also talked EXTENSIVELY about beskar production and forging, why the ingots in the mandalorian have pattern forging, why tor vizsla and death watch probably didn’t have full beskar armor despite being richer/more well connected while jaster and the true mandlorians WOULD have had more beskar in their kits, and also the differences in forges the true mandalorians would have used compared to the armorer in din’s covert. which we talked about while figuring out the logistics of obi’s beskar’vik in hunger ‘verse, and then i never got the chance to really dig into in a way that made sense with the plot of phantom menace. altho i guess i did slip a little bit of it into dha kar’ta with the hierarchy of a house and the appropriate level of beskar for your status in the house and clan.
i’m planning on exploring the pattern forging process in a secret project i’m working on, but i’ll be getting to all this droid nonsense in the second part of hunger ‘verse! ‘cause the clone wars are def still happening in that one (¬ω¬ )
I never saw people say stuff like this enough when I was a teenager, so I’m saying it now.
I’m in my mid-thirties and I have never had sex. I’ve thought about it and could have had one or two opportunities if I put in more effort, but I always decided against it because I just wasn’t into it at the time.
I can safely say that I do not feel I have missed out on anything. I was perfectly capable, by myself, of learning about my own body and boundaries without anyone else there to muddy the waters. The immense pressure that was there in my teens/twenties to Have Sex Just Do It is basically gone. I’m vibing. I’ve got my routine by myself in bed that I enjoy, and that’s enough for me.
And in the unlikely event that I ever decide to have sex with someone in the future, I don’t feel at all like I’m lacking some essential Knowledge or Skill that would “make it good” for someone else. I fully expect to ask my partner out loud what they like and to receive an answer clearly communicated and to relax and have fun. And if it’s a disappointing experience, I’m fine with that too. It is what it is.
Sex is just not that big of a deal. I suspected it as a teen, and I’m more sure of it now. It’s fine to have it or not have it. It’s whatever.
I feel like when people make those posts about like "If the Jedi had done everything perfectly then Anakin wouldn't have been Like That and Done Those Things" actually just want the Jedi to somehow be omniscient.
Like they need to have somehow just known from the beginning of time that Palpatine was bad and evil and manipulative and engineering their destruction so that they could make all of the perfect choices to fight that same manipulation of Anakin and the Senate. But those "perfect" choices are only available with a certain level of information that would have required literal god-level omniscience to acquire.
"If the Jedi had done everything perfectly" is a nonsense statement. They DID make all the right choices, but they made the right choices for the information they HAD, and the resources they had access to. The Jedi did everything right with Anakin. They took him in, they loved him, they made exceptions for him, they were lenient with him, they gave him the skills and tools he needed to survive and thrive, they rewarded him, they trusted him, and he murdered them anyway. The Jedi were loyal to the Republic's ideals and protected as many people both within the Republic and outside of it as they could, they were capable of seeing its corruption but also capable of seeing that it was genuinely still one of the best options out there for most people, they fought against becoming soldiers and then accepted that role anyway when war broke out and people needed to be protected, and the Republic turned on them anyway. Because doing everything right wasn't enough.
I don't know how often people in other stories and in real life can say that sometimes you can do everything right and still lose before it sinks in for this fandom that it's something that also applies to THIS story. There are quite a few characters who absolutely made mistakes, who made the wrong choices, who succumbed to fear and greed and selfishness. But there are also characters who did EVERYTHING RIGHT and still lost because the whole point is to show that one person's selfishness can have a massive impact that goes much further than just them.
I hate how I sometimes find it difficult to post about Qui-Gon and how much I love him as a Jedi, how I want to take comic panels and cry about how good he was and what that says about the Jedi, but I have gotten so many "this just shows that Qui-Gon was the only good Jedi!" comments on my posts that it's made me hesitant to post about him at all or feel like I have to establish a foundation of Qui-Gon not being perfect before I can say anything nice about him.
And I want to take him back, I want to have a corner of fandom that gets to love Qui-Gon as someone who was a good person, who cared deeply about others, who was a wise and wonderful Jedi, not a perfect one, he could be a bitch sometimes, and that's great, he's hilarious!
And I want to love him as a Jedi who loves the other Jedi, who can butt heads with them sometimes, just as they butt heads with him, but they love him right back. I want our corner of fandom to have the room to celebrate a character that shouldn't have been taken from us in the first place--Qui-Gon wanted the Chosen One trained as a Jedi, he appeared on Mortis and asked him to remember his Jedi training, he appeared to Yoda and Obi-Wan as a Force Ghost because he loved them as Jedi, and I'm tired of letting fandom take that from me.
QUI-GON LOVED THE JEDI AND THEY LOVED HIM AND I'M GOING TO LOVE HIM AS A GREAT JEDI RIGHT ALONGSIDE ALL THE OTHER GREAT JEDI.

I kind of do think "this is not who we are, we need to live up to our democratic heritage" is a winning message in a way "america is basically and fundamentally evil. fuck you all" isn't
#we've often failed to live up to the ideals & beliefs & rights that our country was founded upon but they remain good & necessary ones#they're still fundamental to living in a free & equitable liberal democracy#the sins of our history & the current crisis we're in does not mean that our country is corrupt beyond saving#it means that we have to work to *make* those ideals & beliefs & rights equally accessible & true for *everyone*#it'll mean generations more difficult effort & setbacks but i do still truly believe it'll be worth it#because i want everyone living here now & in the future to live in that free & equitable democracy that we promise#because this is *my* country. and i love my country. and i want my country to love all its people too
There's something very sad and defeatist about the people who say, "No this IS who we are, the country is awful and--"
Yeah, yeah. It's bad. We get it. Kinda hard to miss right now. You know what? So is everywhere else. You are not going to find a single government, a single nation, anywhere on earth that is perfect and unproblematic.
We need to acknowledge this. Nowhere is perfect. Everywhere has corrupt people who actively seek positions they can use to exploit power and enrich themselves at the expense of others. The vast majority of countries in the world have a lot of blood on their hands and were founded in war; loads of countries have a history of colonization and exploitation of other countries, and a lot of that is continuing to this day.
Now raise your hand: who here was taught as a child to believe in the good your nation can do for its people and the world? Who here was raised with the idea that your country had an awful past but has learned better and is trying to move forward to do better and be better in the future?
Short of buying a boat and hiding away at sea, you are never, ever going to be free of nationality. Not even if you burn it all down; something new will just arise in its place. This is the world we have; this is the society we have to live in. Do you not wish it was better? Do you not wish that is did reflect that optimism you were raised with?
The reason children around the world are taught to believe in the good side of their nation is NOT because the people teaching us want to indoctrinate us into the cult of nationalism (okay yeah, some do do that on purpose, and sometimes that's just the result despite teachers' best efforts), but because they want us to see that good side, see what things are like now, and get angry and disappointed and energized enough to fight to make it reality. To actually do better and become a better world for everyone.
Throwing up your hands and declaring it beyond hope helps only the people who don't want you fighting to make things better. Making things better is not a problem that will be solved in any one person's lifetime. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree is ten years ago. The second best time is now.
Friendly reminder that these only happen slowly, carefully, with lots of reader encouragement, engagement, reflection, and support, and an ending is never a guarantee.

i like the phrases "it's not for me," "it's not my thing," and "i'm not the target audience" because they're the most concise way to express "this thing that you enjoy has merits but idgaf about it" without being aggressive
Oh and also the assumption that trans male and transmasculine experiences are monolithic and limited to normative manhood and a desire to pass or already being cis passing is ultimately just an expression of an extremely reductionist perspective.
Transmasculinity and trans manhood is as diverse as transfemininity and trans womanhood.
You simply choose to reduce it to because it fits your already existing mentality that casts masculinity and manhood as the inherent oppressor.
Also if you think that way I'm pretty sure I can expect you to ALSO be reductive and exclusionist to any transfem person who doesn't fit your normative ideas... soooo.
I don't care for it: I stand with trans men and transmasculine people in all their vibrant diversity.
I stand with the transmasc dykes, the trans male femboys, the transmasc-transfems, the transmasc girlfailures, the trans male bears and transmasc fags, I love my trans male brothers and my transmasc siblings.
