Do you ever think about how recom Quaritch probably feels like he's living in a horror movie?

Like, you lay down in a link bed to make a copy of your memories just in case, then you blink and you're being told it's been 13 years and your body is wrong.

You can see light your brain wouldn't have known how to process even if your eyes could perceive it; everything looks strange because there's a whole new layer of color on it that there aren't words for. Your nose is so sensitive that walking through the hangar feels like being punched in the face. You can smell someone walking up behind you, no matter how recently they've showered. Your balance is different, and you've got an entire new limb that moves on its own. You can't hide a single thing you're feeling because you can't stop that tail and your ears from moving. Every time you catch sight of your hands you have to fight the urge to peel your own skin off. The familiar sight of your tattoo on your arm makes things worse, actually, because it's a reminder of what you're supposed to be. Your scars are missing and while you don't miss the ache in your skull when the weather changes, it's just one more thing that feeds the scream you swallow every time you look in the mirror.

You hold your own skull in your hand and it looks so small, and the only way you can handle the devastating grief of realizing that everything you ever valued is lost to you is by burying it with rage.

You find your son and oh god how is he nearly grown when a week ago he was in diapers? He's dressed like one of them and even refuses to use the name you gave him. The man you're here to kill is the one he calls "dad". Over the months he starts to warm up to you and oh, he just needed time to get used to you being back, and then he goes tense and silent when you call him "son".

Every time someone calls you by rank it's clear that they're just humoring you; collectively pretending that they think you're the same person. Meanwhile they stare at you out of the corners of their eyes, watching to see how long you can convince yourself that you are. As you get used to your new body and learn how to use it to full effect they start to sneer when they think you can't see them. You ignore it because results are all that matters and you'll prove that you're still yourself.

Eventually you start being able to forget for a while how much you hate the body you're stuck in. A few blissful moments of not noticing. Over time those moments come more and more often, and one day you realize that you don't desperately wish you were human again anymore. It horrifies you that this body doesn't horrify you anymore. Worse, it's started to feel like home. It's become second nature to keep tabs on your squad by scent. Your balance is better than it ever was before. You can tell the difference between the calls of a forest banshee and a mountain banshee, and you tell yourself that you just learned it because the mountain banshees are the ones that might have a rider and you're keeping track of how much danger you might be in. But it's becoming harder and harder to ignore the truth: that you belong out there in the field in a way that you never have on base since you woke up blue
