Small parallels between Dottore and Mozart's Don Giovanni (analysis)

[Contains 6.6 spoilers under the cut]

Now that the dust is settling in my mind after the AQ, I can analyse a striking parallel in imagery in the Irminsul finale.

Dottore and the segments appears (to me) to be a direct reference to the finale of Don Giovanni, where the errant and unrepentant sinner is dragged to hell for his hubris. Once gone, the chorus rejoices with a cautionary moral lesson:

'Such is the end of the evildoer: the death of a sinner always reflects his life'.

Although Don Giovanni is a consummate philanderer, Dottore too uses human bodies as an infinite disposable resource for his own gratification, albeit intellectual. Imagine the 'Catalogue Aria', except instead of listing romantic conquests, it's all the test subjects, their respective qualities and virtues, Dottore's preferences depending on the experiment / season, and the results they've yielded over the centuries with varying degrees of success.

Don Giovanni is warned on several occasions that his path will only lead to downfall. But rather than change his ways, he goads Fate; inviting, provoking and taunting it. He almost challenges it not to deliver. He literally invites the ghost of someone he killed to dinner. Then, even in the face of certain death - and the ghost of the man he murdered in cold blood, he is defiantly unrepentant for his actions. Then is dragged down into the flames; the culmination of his past sins being responsible for his downfall.

Sound familiar?

The music is chilling. Imagine the Commendatore singing 'Il Dottoooore, be thee invited...'

Where they differ is that, in the moment, Dottore initially struggles, but then decides not to resist embracing a new form. Which makes me wonder if that really is the last we'll see of him.

Anyway, go and listen to Don Giovanni by Mozart. It's a banger.

I'm in absolute AGONY after the AQ. I loved Pants and his characterisation lived up to how I had imagined him in many ways, but some aspects of his lore left me devastated.

Consequently, I'm angsting over which direction to take The Serpent.

What should I do with The Serpent now that we have some significant canon Pants lore?

Continue it as an AU

Abandon the current version and do canon compliant rewrite

Retcon canon elements in going forward (eg Pants lied to Reader about his past)

Something else (suggestions in the comments please!)

Pantalone confesses to Dottore's darling after months of pining. SFW, unrequited love, undertones of manipulation and infidelity, passing mentions of forced relationship but not acted upon. No gender for Reader.

“...my Lord?”

Pantalone isn’t sure if your squeak of a response is in his favour or not. Your complexion pales and you stare at him, wide-eyed and mulling over the words he’d just told you. The words he was absolutely convinced you’d be agreeable to, after so many months of observing you: how lonely you were with Dottore gone in one nation or another, cooped up in his laboratory with his precious experiments, leaving you all alone when you and the Doctor were supposed to be a couple. 

How could someone as precious and brilliant and lovely as you be expected to endure such a life? Especially when you always came to find Pantalone in his own office when the Doctor was occupied, easily chatting away about this or that, laughing so casually like the pair of you were old friends. And over time, Pantalone had come to realize that whatever friendship he might have envisioned you two sharing, he would always yearn for more.

Pantalone was greedy, but he was no fool. Or so he’d thought; he’d practiced the words carefully, chosen a time and place where Dottore would not be, waited until you were seated at his side contently sipping on your tea (expensive and imported to your tastes, of course) before speaking the words that made his pulse race:

My dear, I know the Doctor is a very busy man, and how lonely you are. But I…well, I can offer you both the protection you require and the time he cannot give. What do you say?

He waits to touch you until you reply, even if his instincts are screaming at him to take your hand in his - to bring it to his lips, lavish the back of your palm in the kisses you deserve, and -

“M-my Lord, I…I’m not sure what to say.” You shake your head, a little nervous. Your laugh mirrors your anxiety.

“You needn’t say anything right now, my dear. I merely ask you to look back on our last few months together; the times Lord Dottore has been absent from our get-togethers, and you, left isolated - alone. Surely you don’t mean to say that you enjoy such an existence?” 

You choke out another bark of laughter. “My - Lord Pantalone, are you suggesting I…that you and I should…be…?”

This time Pantalone does take your hand; he does not know if it is an act of confidence or desperation. He locks eyes with yours and smiles thinly. “I am simply pointing out the facts, my darling. Our Doctor is all about logic and facts; do the facts before you not demonstrate I am worthy of being at your side…?”

Frozen in place, Pantalone swears he can see the cogs turning inside your head. And then, reality catches up to you; catches up to him, and you twitch and jerk away, placing your hands firmly on your lap. You’re up on your feet before Pantalone can say another word, and his heart plunges down to his stomach.

You dust yourself off. Pantalone dry swallows.

“You…you mistake my solitude for loneliness, my Lord Harbinger,” you say at last, even but cool. “And you mistake our friendship for…for what you have in mind.”

Pantalone does not reply.

“I shan’t tell Zandik about this,” you continue, grabbing your overcoat, tone a touch quieter. A useless attempt at softening the blow. “I think it is best, however, that…that these meetings between us cease, for the time being.”

As you head for the door, Pantalone cannot even formulate the words to make you stop. He knows he could force you here with him; his troops or himself, it wouldn’t matter. But that’s not what Pantalone wants, and it’s not what he thought he would have today. He’d been so confident this conversation would go according to plan - and yet…

And yet you are bowing before him, a good ten feet away, not quite meeting his eye as you reach for the door. “Good bye, Lord Pantalone. May you…find what you are looking for, elsewhere.”

Pantalone stares at your cup of tea on his coffee table, still full and steaming hot, mind blank as his vision blurs with tears he will never admit to shedding. Trying not to register the empty seat beside him on the sofa, he mulls over your final words to him. May you find what you are looking for elsewhere. This time it is his turn for an empty chuckle.

For what he is looking for, he can never have.
