Will stop working on all other fics until i get some chapters of this done. That gives me time to work on plot for the others and stuff.
The batcave was quiet, not even the echo of bats or footsteps resounded throughout the cave. In the dark cave, only one source of light pierced through the darkness. Tim Drake sat at the batcomputer, the screen illuminating the space around him, keeping the darkness at bay.
Movie night had ended a few hours ago. The joyous moments with the family long over leaving tim to work alone in silence.
He’d been pondering on bruce’s request—the one involving [name]. What did they gain from that? Why would bruce do that? Those were the main questions floating around his head.
He sighed, leaning back in the chair. It was late, the others had gone to bed already. Bruce had a meeting in the morning and the others also had lives to take care of. The only one that was up at this hour was Tim.
Tim pushed himself off the chair, taking one last look at the batcomputer. The screen displayed information, stuff about the application for the internship, what the questions would be, where the applications would be taken, and the estimated wait time before getting a response.
Finally, he pushed the button, powering off the computer. As he walked through the cave, his mind still raced with other questions. If bruce did have a good reason for his request, then what would they do if tony stark still found out about [name]?
[name] had a record in Gotham academy. Even though she went by her mothers last name, people still talked about her—not as a Wayne. She’d made a reputation for herself because of her intelligence. People liked her, people hated her, it was bound to happen especially in a prestigious high school.
That didn’t matter, what did matter was the future. He’d need a backup plan in case his first plan failed. He’d learned that from Bruce. Have a main plan, have a back up for the main plan, and have a back up to the back up.
He still needed to figure out what his back up plan would be. For now, he needed to get himself to bed, it had been a while since he properly slept. Applications would be taken the next day, technically it would’ve been later in the day since it was well past 12:00 am.
[name]’s room was dark, the only source of light coming from her phone that had lit up with a notification. The alarm clock sat on her bedside table, the minutes slowly ticking by as it inevitably got closer to her usual wake up time.
Her bed was empty, blankets fixed neatly over the bed. On her bed was her school uniform and her backpack.
The sound of the shower cutting off sent the room into silence. For a moment, nothing happened until [name] finally excited the bathroom.
[name] frowned as she glanced at her alarm clock. It had five more minutes before it beeped at her usual wake up time. Walking over to the device, she pressed the button to prevent it from beeping. She was already up.
She hadn’t been able to sleep properly that night. She’d been tossing and turning all night, barely getting a wink of sleep as nerves slowly got the best of her.
The floor creaked under her weight as she got dressed. [name] walked over to her desk once she was fully dressed, opening her laptop to check if everything she needed to get done for the news school paper was fully completed.
In the kitchen, Alfred was already preparing breakfast when [name] came down from her room. He glanced over at her as she entered the kitchen, greeting her politely. “Will you be joining your family for breakfast?” He asked.
[name] shook her head. “I’ve gotta go, the bus is coming early to pick me up.” She said.
Alfred nodded. He would’ve offered to drop her off himself, but he was busy and couldn’t just drop everything to take her to school.
Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, [name] sped out of the kitchen and disappeared, going towards the front of the manor.
Alfred sighed, returning to his cooking.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” Bruce asked, sitting at the head of the table drinking some coffee. Tim was seated a few seats away from him, telling him what he’d come up with.
He nodded. “Yeah, getting an internship with stark is a huge thing, it opens more opportunities for whoever gets it.”
Bruce hummed in acknowledgement.
“And that also ensures [name] doesn’t get the internship. I got to see the questions for the application last night, they should be easy for me, I don’t know if that can be said for [name] as well.” Tim added.
Duke, who was sat at the opposite end of the table, decided to give his input as well. “Why not just let her have this? She’s not a vigilante, you’re not planning on leaving her your business, are you?” He asked bruce.
Bruce didn’t respond, that was enough of an answer for duke. “This can open possibilities for her, futures that are locked away at the moment. She doesn’t want to use the Wayne name to get into things, she wants to get those things by her own work.” Duke continued.
Bruce sighed, stirring his coffee emotionlessly. “It’s for our safety. What if stark tower gets attacked? What then? What if she’s taken hostage by the joker or the riddler? She’s a liability for all of us, and this is for her own safety.”
Duke shook his head, standing up. “Is it really for hers safety?” He asked. Duke left the dining room, leaving tim and bruce alone to finish their breakfast.
As he walked out of the dining room, duke pulled out his phone, opening up [name]’s contact.
<duke> Ur dad is up to something. Tim’s going to school again to take the application as well. They both don’t want u to get the internship for “safety reasons” 🙄
He turned off his phone, going to do something else and stay out of that family drama as much as he could.
The application had gone extremely well for [name]. She was fairly confident in all of her answers since they were on subjects she excelled in. [name] sighed, glad to finally be over with the application. That thing had her nervous ever since she found out about it. They took the test within 24 hours of finding out about it.
She assumed it was mostly to prevent students from finding a way to cheat. After all, this was a personal internship with tony stark, a hero, arguably the smartest man on the planet right after reed richards. [name] closed her laptop, packing it into her backpack.
The applications were taken in the science classroom, in the company of four teachers. Why so many? [name] hadn’t a clue. But still, it was fairly easy. She was taken by surprise when she was immediately dragged to the science classroom as soon as she stepped off the bus.
Apparently they had an order to get the tests done. The smartest kids did it first, and the dumbest kids did it last. Obviously the teachers didn't say that, they simply said “Oh! You’re asking why you’re first? It’s in order, highest grade to lowest grade!” With that cheerful tone. Everyone knew if there wasn’t an order to get it done, a student could sit in there for a full day without answering five questions.
It made everything easier for everyone and faster.
“Alright, you’ll get an email in two weeks.” One of the teachers said. [name] nodded, stepping out of the classroom. The sun was beginning to rise. One quick glance at the clock showed that it was just 7 AM. [name] frowned.
“Do we have a tim here!” The teacher shouted behind her. [name] froze, turning around to search the row of students waiting to take their application. Lo and behold, tim stood up, walking past her and ignoring her gawking expression. She watched as he entered the room, the door closing with a soft click and the blinds closing as well.
[name] blinked, turning to stare at the wall in front of her before shaking her head and resuming her walk. She didn’t know why she was surprised, duke had warned her. Perhaps she had assumed he was exaggerating. Actually seeing tim there made her realize that they were dead serious not wanting her there.
[name] mumbled a few curses under her breath, kicking at a piece of paper on the ground. The janitor paused his sweeping, staring at her expectantly. [name] paused, slowly taking two steps back and grabbing the piece of trash off the ground with a forced smile. The janitor huffed, walking towards her and handing her a trash bag. “Drop this out the back, I’m taking my lunch break.”
“H-huh?” [name] stuttered. She turned sharply. “It’s seven in the morning! What do you mean lunch break!?” She yelled. The janitor looked back at her, pointed at the trash bag and pointed outside, never once breaking his stride.
The door to the back of the school was pushed open by [name], the cool air immediately hitting her face. She sighed, inhaling deeply to take in some fresh air. Unfortunately, the dumpster was right next to the door, so she inhaled the smell of garbage. [name] exhaled sharply, holding her breath as she tossed the trash bag off the railing and into the dumpster.
As she turned to leave, something caught her eye. The container with the spider from yesterday was there, a few feet away from the door. [name] walked down the ramp, making her way towards the container. No wonder she hadn’t seen it in the science room, they must’ve placed it out back.
Did it die? Why was it out here by itself like this?
[name] crouched down, reaching forward and tapping the container. Nothing happened. She looked around the container, almost immediately spotting the spider. It was in a corner, on its back, with its legs bent in on itself.
“So you did die, huh…” She muttered. [name] smirked. The spider was dead. Maybe holding a spider's corpse would help with her fear of spiders. Opening the container, she reached in, grabbing a hold of it gently and placing it on her palm.
“Aww, you’re not so ba–” The spider immediately got up and crawled up her sleeve. “HOLY SHIT!”
[name] jogged up the driveway for the manor. It was dark, too dark to be out in gotham for her liking. However, after getting attacked by that spider, she’d practically thrown her sweater off and ran off. But the spider seemed to have bitten her before she took her sweater off because she had been on and off for the rest of the day.
As the door closed behind her, [name] smiled. She was finally home after a long day. “Miss [name].” Alfred said, appearing out of nowhere. “Quite late, is it not?”
“Sorry, I got held up doing stuff for the school's newspaper.” She lied, walking past him. “I’m gonna go to bed, I’m tired.”
“Would you care for a quick bite before that?” He asked.
“No thanks, had a bite.” She muttered, walking up the steps to the second floor.
[name] dropped her backpack and sweater on the floor of her room, dragging herself to her desk and looking in the mirror. She grabbed onto her shirt, pulling it down a bit to expose more of her neck. She frowned, staring at the puncture mark that had turned slightly red.
Sighing, she dropped her hand, staring at herself in the mirror. Her eyes had darker rings around them—result of going to sleep late as hell the other night. [name] inhaled sharply, closing her eyes for a moment.
[name]’s eyes snapped open, her breathing was heavy as she lightly slapped herself. “Nope, I’m going to bed.” she muttered, trying to convince herself to go to sleep. She washed her face first, took a quick shower, and finally changed for bed.
She could barely hold herself up as she crawled into her bed. [name] felt unusually tired, almost as if she’d had all the energy sucked out of her body and ran a full marathon after. The blanket was barely wrapped around her before she was knocked out, sleeping soundlessly.
