How to write a character-driven plot

The Character-Driven Plot Wheel

1. Emotions drive actions.

Make your hero act on their deepfelt emotions. This not only adds meaning to their actions, but also helps communicate to readers your hero’s core emotional struggle.

2. Actions trigger consequences.

When your hero acts, give their actions consequences that affect the plot, themselves, and/or the surrounding characters. For example, driven by curiosity, maybe your hero opens Pandora’s box; maybe they act recklessly and someone dies; or maybe they stand up for what they believe in, but at great personal cost. Consequences raise the stakes and empower your hero with agency.

3. Consequences compel change.

Use the consequences of your hero’s actions to create a crucible of growth — challenges and situations that force them to take the next step on their character journey. That step may be forward, or backward, and it may be large or small; but something inside them changes.

4. Change influences emotions.

When a character goes through a change, even a small one, allow it to affect them emotionally. Maybe they feel increasingly frustrated or guilty. Maybe they’re afraid, having just taken another step closer to abandoning their old way of seeing the world. Or maybe they finally feel peace.

Regardless of the form it takes, remember to reflect your hero’s change in their emotions. Then let their emotions drive action, to trigger consequences, which will compel further change.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

And there you have it! That’s how you write a character-driven plot.

It just struck me,

if Sailor Moon was able to bring back everyone killed by Galaxia with the Cauldron, does that mean it’s possible she could bring back the Shitennou too?

I actually think the Infinity arc and the galaxy cauldron have a very strong connection to sailor moon crystal. As seen in the last episode Queen Serenity’s Will tells sailor moon there is meaning behind her reincarnation as a normal girl, this is also seen in the manga.

Now brace yourself cause this is going to be loooooooooong

In the infinity arc,after eternal sailor moon purifies the galaxy cauldron from Chaos presence with her sacrifice, Usagi and all others are restored to their original forms, as well as all other sailor scouts that were captured and melted away by Sailor Galaxia, the inner and outter scouts along with Mamoru and Chibiusa are reunited inside the cauldron.

That`s when Cosmos star seed guardian fairy appears and explains how Queen Serenity brought the princess star seed to the cauldron to be reborn on Earth during “our” time.

The guardian offers two paths for Sailor Moon. She can do as Queen Serenity did back at the time of the Silver Millenium, throw her life at the cauldron and restart anew. Or remain inside the galaxy caludron in this form. Sailor Moon chooses a human life, no matter how many times Chaos is reborn.

Now this is basically how the rebirth system of the stars works. Why do I think this is crucial for Sailor Moon crystal is that, now that we have this information, we can nurture hope for the Shitennou and here is why. But before I continue I want to make it clear that according to the manga the shitennou do not have sailor crystals, Naoko Takeuchi mentioned once that only Mamoru had a sailor crystal being male. But sailor moon CRYSTAL MIGHT change this into giving the shitennou sailor crystals as well or something similar as each would guard a section of the STAR of Earth, same way the Amazoness quartet are less than planets, being asteroids, but have sailor crystals. The manga often mentions how unique Earth was, so this might also cause Mamoru`s guardians to be exceptions like himself, being male sailor crystals. But this is all speculation on my part. OK! SO, ON WITH THE SPECULATION

In sailor moon crystal there is a distinctive change to the shitennou rebirth. Which made them more similar to what happened to the Amazoness Quartet. The four future guardians of Chibi Moon are corrupted by Chaos as Metallia, turned to stones for their failure and restored by Neo Queen Serenity

We could stop here and hope that Neo Queen Serenity had the power to restore the Shitennou stones back to their forms. But I want to build in reasons as to how and why Crystal Shitennou can be more similar to the Amazoness quartet than the manga counterparts.

So, in the manga, it wasnt clear if the Shitennou were victims or made a conscious choice of betraying their master. Some parts are, however, very similar to the Amazoness situation.

Both use the term enslaved, might be a different word used on each case on the original language, but still, this gives us manga-wise support for the shitennou innocence. Sailor Moon Crystal is less dubious on that.Clearly stating all humans were brainwashed, including the Shitennou. But Kunzite`s line is considerably different from the manga, instead of “selling themselves”, they “fall for her schemes”. Before we had the idea of perpetual enslaving, now the doom of the four kings is only for this time, is not something sealed away into eternity.

So much this breaks the hold Beryl had over them in the manga, that instead of repeating what he does in the manga, which is merely questioning Beryl, he and his three companions turn fully against Beryl and attempt to attack her. In the manga Beryl reminds him that he sold himself to Metalia, but in SM Crystal, the stones on their foreheads turn black, which strongly suggests brainwashing and even possession.

In their rebirth, they were returned to the Cauldron, along with the Senshi, Endymion and Serenity,as Galaxia herself proclaims, that all is created in the cauldron. I find it curious that Strong stars are not necessarily Sailor Scouts in her line here.

And Beryl promised the reborn Kunzite to restore the other three`s bodies, but they perished into stones. We might be able to consider this stones, their star crystals, therefore enabling their return.

The explanation one of Galaxia`s servant Sailor Phi gives for the star crystals is familiar to the state the Shitennou are reduced as stones.

At first I would doubt that the Shitennou could be considered to have star crystals, but then one of Usagi`s final line to Mamoru, makes me wonder if the Shitennou could have star seeds/crystals and thus be included in the whole rebirth plot over and over again, as many times as the senshi, serenity and endymion would be reborn.

So i truly think that Sailor Moon CRYSTAL will bring the Shitennou back, be on this arc, or in the infinity arc for Cristal Tokyo.

The name of the new anime really makes me stroke an invisible beard, how deep does this Crystal business go?
