Probably the most irritating part in Voltron season 8 (and in season 7) was how useless Romelle was, like seriously why does this character even exist she doesn’t contribute in any way and only seems to make things worse I think they should have made Romelle a plot twist villain, it would have made her character a LOT more interesting and less like she’s just taking up space

So, I’m really excited you bring Romelle up, because I have quite a bit to say about her! Hopefully you don’t regret inciting another one of Crystal’s TedTalks.  To save everyone’s feed, I’m going to throw it under the cut.

I’m actually about halfway through coloring a little mini comic interaction I have sketched out between Rolo and Krolia where she’s basically like, “High key, I’ll kill you if you betray him, again.” Lol

As far as headcanons, hmm. I’m bad at detailing, but I have general concepts and moments laid out in my brain:

When the Blade of Marmora teams up with the rebels on one of Keith’s earliest missions, Keith is not happy to see a certain someone working with the rebels. Doesn’t trust him at allll. He’s not outwardly hateful or anything, but his stress goes through the roof whenever intel is shared with Rolo or when Rolo is expected to watch Keith’s team’s backs.

Trust is slow to build. It takes Rolo ignoring an order from the Blade to go back for a civilian before Keith finally starts to believe Rolo might actually be alright. (It reminds him of something his old Voltron teammates would do.)

They race each other in crafts. Things are more even when Keith flies base models instead of his old lion, but he’s still the better pilot. He enjoys having someone challenge him.

Rolo 100% falls first. He’s not subtle at all, but he also doesn’t announce it or anything. Rolo’s team is so painfully aware of his feelings and tease him endlessly. Nyma will drop remarks (to Rolo’s annoyance) right in front of Keith about it, and it will still go right over Keith’s head. Matt is the last to figure it out and he about short circuits when he finally puts it together.

Despite the height difference, Keith kicks Rolo’s ass in hand-to-hand combat training.

Rolo’s bandages cover scars from his time under Galra captivity. The skin is particularly sensitive and fragile in those areas, and they’re prone to reactive flair ups of pain and swelling when messed with. Keith gets a look at these scars for the first time after a particularly rough battle where they wind up stranded and have to wait for backup to pick them up.

Lance is initially outraged to find out Keith is buddy-buddy with Rolo and Nyma (“You know, the people who sold us out to Zarkon and chained me to a tree ‘Rolo and Nyma!?’”), but he and Nyma actually eventually click and become decent pals. They have a bet going about how long it will take Keith to realize Rolo’s crush.

Krolia meets Rolo post- Space Whale and basically threatens Rolo with murder if he ever betrays her son, again. She doesn’t trust Rolo, but she trusts Keith’s judgement so she doesn’t meddle beyond that initial greeting. He earns her respect at a later time when a mission fails because he does something to ensure Keith’s safety over the mission’s success.

Rolo’s race can breathe in a wider range of atmospheres. There’s a pretty big scare when Keith’s mask gets shattered in a battle on the ground, rendering him unable to breathe, and Rolo has to drag him back to the ship while under heavy fire. Rolo essentially spells out his feelings after.

First kiss follows Keith making a close call piloting maneuver during a mission that saves his team. Rolo outright grabs him by the hood and fusses him out over the risky behavior, before Keith ends up closing the last of the distance.

Rolo’s race needs less sleep than humans. Once they’re finally together it basically becomes a battle for Keith to either choose to go to sleep together or wake up together. Keith chooses to do both anyway sometimes.

Both work in humanitarian aid efforts after the war.

I think that hits the highlights. Hope this satiates! And hopefully I'll finish the next Roleith piece sooner than later lol

Are you happy with Shiro settling down to get married and “leaving the battle” or whatever as his ending? Because I really thought he should’ve gone back to being a piloting instructor at the garrison and maybe staying on standby as atlas commander or something like that. He loved piloting too much to become completely disconnected from it and it feels like he never dealt with his trauma imo.

Short answer: No. 

Long Answer: Somehow, this transformed into, “Obligatory Post-Season 8 Meta: Shiro is still the Black Paladin. No, I’m not delusional. Really.”

I’d like to say that I’m an avid Adashi shipper, now hold on! Hear me out, I would’ve liked to see Shiro and Adam have closure to their break up and move on, because shipping aside, I like how mature their relationship is, I think it’s important for kids to watch that love is not everything in a relationship, you think in terms of both and also if it is good for you, healthy, it teaches you it’s ok to back away from a relationship if it’s not good for you, they did this with Korra and Mako in LOK and I really loved it because they stayed friends, I looked forward for a reunion or a friendly break up/closure

But I’m still gona defend my boy Adam in just this thing, remember they already knew Shiro had a disease, so Adam was perfectly happy with sharing the remaining of Shiro’s life in domestic bliss but Shiro had other ideas on what he wanted with the little life he had left, THAT is when the break up happens, so I don’t think Adam would’ve wanted Shiro back solely because he is healthy and despite loving the idea of them going back together, I also thought Shiro would definitely want to go out to space with his new found health and giant ass robot that looks like only HE can use, so why would he stay on earth? Once again bringing the same trouble, Adam and Shiro don’t share the same path so a closure to their relationship I would’ve definitelty be happy with, these were my pre-s8 thoughts

Which is why I felt punched in the gut and betrayed when he marries someone I don’t know, since I’ve attached myself to Adam but understood the situation they were in, seeing that finale my shipping heart came out and Why couldn’t that be Adam!!! Is the same fff thing!!!! You made my son Adam useless!!!!

This right here is the absolute tea, they could’ve done great or just let go of the subject but they decided PR was good enough and threw everything they made out the window

As someone who took care of someone with a degenerative disease for sixteen years, who watched people walk away when the person made decisions they didn’t agree or like - I hope you can understand why I disagree about Adam.

It’s not about whether Shiro would have been healed after. It’s about when Adam could have supported Shiro, he didn’t. Instead, he decided to walk away - so now that Shiro would be healed, yes, it’s a terrible message to say, “The issue that divided us is gone! We can be together.”

It says Adam wasn’t willing to continue to support Shiro when there was an issue. After all, would Adam had left if Shiro wasn’t ill? According to the story, it seemed that Adam had an issue with Shiro being ill and going, not the fact of Shiro simply going.

At the same time, Shiro chose the mission over Adam. Both Shiro and Adam had the opportunity to choose the other and ultimately did what was best for themselves, not the other person.

So yes. The problem comes down to Shiro’s disease.

And by Adam and Shiro getting together after the fact - it tells people with degenerative diseases they can have had the love they sought - only if they didn’t have the disease.

Alright alright alright, I need a reblog because this could get long

As someone who hasn’t taken care of someone with a degenerative disease, you have opened my eyes, you have made me reflect and think so, here’s my new thoughts, if you don’t mind me ranting

Here’s an issue I have, VLD really thought of Adam and Shiro and what they showed us as the only rep, nothing more, so once it blew over, I have JDS & LM saying again and again how beautiful and caring the relationship was, how it really was a hard desicion but hey, that is life, that none were in the wrong, mostly they say this because I am aware there is no way they will admit they put a bad relationship and really Shiro was lucky he got out of it, so they soften the blow of their break up and Adam’s later death by saying like, hey it used to be beautiful “it was going towards marriage” but shit happened

Now that is outside, what do we see in the actual show? As I said, I gave it a pass because of LOK, saying it again, I love that they can show that a relationship CAN fail, not everything is love but here’s the thing, in LOK both of them remained friends, each takes their path but once together they are a team and they support each other, in fact his last line to her is how important she is to him and how he’ll always support her

I wish that had happened in VLD, I really want to ask you, if Adam had said: I want to break up, our personal paths clearly don’t match but hey, as a friend, I wish you the best, (maybe I’ll be there if you need me but as a friend?) … would it have been better for you? For me it is, it’s exactly what I liked in LOK and I want to know your thoughts since in LOK there was no degenerative disease in the middle

However in the reality, Adam is HARSH, that scene is not about showing a relationship unfortunately falling apart, but to show MORE CONFLICT in Shiro’s character, Adam makes a clear point, he even says he is aware he can’t stop him so he doesn’t even try, but to end in that line? It gives you the chills (the bad kind)

So in the end, it really just makes me think what a dumpster this whole thing is, they are threading in between good and bad, like out of canon Word of God or whatever is like, hey it was beautiful while it lasted, he was so brave, they really loved each other soooo much, in canon, yeah it was for the best and Adam was not really for him, like hey don’t feel bad the gay dude died, he wasn’t that great anyway… now I go like, really? Our gay main cast lead was in a failling not fully supportive relationship? And that is why I shouldn’t be mad his ex died? And hey he did mourn him, but I guess he didn’t need that much… um WHAT THE HELL? Is this bullsh*t really the LGTB rep you’ve been bragging is coming?

Like is worst than, here I am, just dissapointed, and I think now even more, I had a little comfort but now is like, you just wanted more torture porn for Shiro didn’t you? You didn’t even TRIED to think of what kind of relationship or dynamic they had as a couple, think of an actual REAL relationship to show onscreen, you just used it as a excuse to add a shitty break up to add to Shiro sufering which btw he already has a lot and also for us not feel bad they killed a gay guy, how nice and kind of you (FFFF you VLD)

At this point I feel they shouldn’t even added that he was gay if that is what they were going to do with him, his sexuality ADEDD to his suffering, if they didn’t need or wanted to show he was gay, they probably wouldn’t have bothered to get him an endgame like almost every other character and the whole Adam thing would’ve been scrappped, S8 would’ve had him as the same character we all love and they wouldn’t have needed those epilogues, Shiro would’ve then TRULY be happy

I wrote a tiny scene in this post about how I would have liked Adam and Shiro’s reunion to go (warning, Sheith-ness but you can ignore Keith and add in anyone Shiro met in space and had a relationship with) - because Adam shouldn’t have died. He totally didn’t deserve to just because he wanted Shiro to stay home. 

After all - Curtis and Shiro’s ending is the ending Adam wanted. Adam wanted Shiro home, and since in canon Shiro isn’t cured (it’s not mentioned anywhere), Shiro spends whatever time he has left with Curtis, and then dies. 

(Happy ending for Shiro? Uh, not sure what show the epilogue was watching, but it wasn’t VLD.)

I wrote a meta earlier about how Shiro didn’t need Adam to be happy, and tbh, though I think showing a healthy LGBTQIA+ relationship is important, Shiro didn’t need to have Adam in his life to be queer. 

At a function of some sort:

Allura: I like that gentleman over there. He’s quite handsome.  

Shiro: He’s definitely my type. 

Allura: I saw him first. 

Or the EPs could have still had Adam but frame him differently. 

Scene on castle-ship bridge:

Keith: You remember that time Adam found out you drove a hoverbike off a cliff? He was so furious.

Shiro: You showed him the picture!

Allura: Who is Adam?

Shiro: My ex-boyfriend. He liked me to take less risks, which…can you blame him? I mean, look how this whole thing turned out. 

The problem is exactly what you said. Adam was framed for us not to like him, just for the EPs to kill him, so we don’t feel bad about him dying - or we were supposed to be feel about him dying and Shiro to get yet another knock against him. 

But Adam didn’t need to die. Heck, they could have shown Adam being supportive and not leaving Shiro, somehow surviving the fight with Sendak, and then greeting Shiro when he gets home! Fancy that!

This all boils down to - despite evidence showing how the story set Shiro up to return at the end of Season 6/early episodes of Season 7, the EPs never wanted Shiro to survive past Season 2. Therefore, any character introduced following that who had a connection to Shiro, couldn’t survive either because it would make Shiro a character and not the plot device he actually was.

Seeing how they handled the whole Soldier 76 of overwatch, the way you said, a clear proof he used to be in a relationship with another guy but hey, he is a soldier so no good at relationships but the ex moved on and even married, so they could’ve easily slided it in but no, they needed more torture porn

As an Adashi shipper (quite the fan) I would willingly push the button “Get rid of those Adam scenes and just mention a past boyfriend or smth spinkled here and there” because as much as I like the ship, it gave all of us so much pain and mixed feelings, was it good? was it bad? why does it even matter, he is dead? why did he have to die? but what if he had survived? We deserve better

And tbh, that disease I’m 100% sure is a scrapped idea, Shiro needed those blacelets or whatever, but during the entire show it was never adressed or seemed like an issue, he became a Champion while his muscles could fail on him? I’m absolutely sure that they added the disease to show in S2 that Shiro died not because he was defeated by Zarkon or smth but because he was already meant to die, there was nothing the paladins could do but they got rid of the idea when they decided Shiro would survive

Fast forward in time, they need LGBT and that break up scene just happens to also mention Shiro’s disease, so why not 2x1 in the torture porn department? So like you said, either we accept Shiro is not cured and he will die not much after the end of the show, or we take the word of god he is cured when he goes to the clone’s body but this is also obvious bad writting since you showed the resolution of the problem before the problem, something as big as this could’ve easily fit into building Shiro’s character but like his PTSD, they never adress it further, heck, I’m just going to go read fanfics, they at least know what we need
