Why I Love Symmetra; The Representation of Autistic Individuals In The Media
I am an Overwatch stan. The game, the characters, the fandom…I love it all to death.
Like all Overwatch players, I have my favorites: Junkrat, Reaper, Sombra. But there is one character with a much deeper meaning.
Symmetra gives me humongous Portal and anti-villain vibes. Deep down, she knows Vishkar is evil, but can’t let herself break away. In a world of heroes, villains, and everything in between, she is one of the most morally complex characters. And she’s also autistic.
The comic “A Better World” first created this idea. For a while, it was nothing but speculation. Then Jeff Kaplin did a wonderful thing and confirmed that yes, Symmetra is on the spectrum.
After learning this about her character, I went and read the comic. And then my heart exploded, because Blizzard handled the whole thing perfectly.
Symmetra’s autism does not define who she is. It is part of her character, but not what she’s known for. Like every other human being, she has personality traits and hobbies that define who she is. Autism is just part of her complex self.
However, all of this brings up a point. As someone with high-functioning autism, I care very much about how autistic individuals are represented in the media. And the thing is…we aren’t.
The first half of this is what TV Tropes calls “Hollywood Autism.” When an autistic character is present, they tend to have a certain set of characteristics. They’re usually male, a savant, and extremely awkward. They can’t live a normal life, and their autism is put on display. In short, it defines who they are.
This is simply not realistic. Some people may have those traits, but not all of them do. We are on a spectrum for a reason: autism is not one size fits all, and it shouldn’t be treated as such.
Then there’s the other part of this: no representation. Take a minute and think, really think, about how many autistic characters you can name. Off the top of my head, I can think of three: Symmetra, Billy from the Power Rangers movie, and the main character from Atypical.
Simply put, there aren’t enough of us. Not explicitly, at least. We’ve all seen it: that character on a show or in a movie that probably has some kind of learning difference, but it’s never outright stated. The reason? It creates controversy. If a character is autistic, people argue, then others can’t relate.
Screw that. We need to get rid of the Ambiguous Disorder trope. So what if a character has autism or any other learning difference? That is only one part of who they are. It should not define them, much like we shouldn’t let it define each other.
In addition, we as a society must do away with the stereotypes surrounding learning differences. Stop calling them disabilities; it pisses those of us with them off. If you’re going to create a character with one, talk to people who actually have it. RJ Cyler, who played Billy, actually went out and talked to autistic people from all parts of the spectrum. We need more of that.
In short: Symmetra’s representation makes me happy. And Hollywood needs to give us more of it.
our fates are entwined 💙✨
— satya vaswani
Symmetra (Satya Vaswani)
First appearance Overwatch (2016). The Indian Vishkar Corporation developed a “hard light” technology in which physical objects can be constructed from light. Satya Vaswani, one of Vishkar’s star “architechs”, was spirited away from an impoverished youth and trained to create such objects. After helping to build a city out of hard light, she was assigned to expand Vishkar’s global reach and received the codename “Symmetra”.
Symmetra was originally designed to be played on defense with a move set that controlled the field of play with turrets that slowed enemies and a teleporter that quickly returned teammates to the fray. The character was situationally best suited for short-range defense around a choke point, but overall occupied a support role: slowing enemies, buffing teammates, and hiding turrets and teleporters. She was classified as a “support” character despite her team role being a combination of “defense” and “builder” abilities.
Symmetra is the first playable video game character recognized as autistic.
“Hi I threw this together extra fast cause things aren't going well and I'm low-key in panic mode but I can at least draw. Fullbody $25 USD
Hey guys! I don't do these at all, but in this case it's an emergency. One of my friends is in desperate need of getting money in order to be able to pay for his phone so jobs he applied to can contact him. In short, his previous job really fucking screwed him over. Please help or boost if you can!
He's taking commissions, info in the link above! I can personally vouch that he's improving every time he churns something out :0!!!
Contact him through DMs on Twitter or through his discord, Ryan Auric#0001 !!!!!!
Posting here too, please help of you can; I know this blog doesn't really do this but my friend is really fucked if he doesn't get something in time.

Me achieving maximum charge with Symmetra!
I love the Magician Symmetra skin because this is what playing Sym is like, predict when the enemy will ult…
Why is Symmetra so goregous
Symmetra: you fool. you absolute buffoon. you think you can challenge me in my own realm? you think you can rebel against my authority? you dare come into my house and upturn my dining chairs and spill coffee grounds in my Keurig? you thought you were safe in your chain mail armor behind that screen of yours. I will take these laminate wood floor boards and destroy you. I didn’t want war. but i didn’t start it.
Lúcio: Can I just say I’m super confused. Like I have no desire to battle. I don’t even know how to properly throw a punch without breaking my hand. I once tried to block a fake slap that my friend swung at me and missed their arm entirely resulting in me accidentally backslapping them across the face. So like you don’t want to fight because chances are pretty good that I’ll end up accidentally hurting both of us. And it’ll just be awkward if we are both sitting there crying our eyes out. And I’m an ugly sobber so you don’t want to see that.
