My Chronicles of Narnia story, Black Dwarfs, Blue River came into being from a variety of directions and, as with most of my longer stories, over an extended period of time. The idea first grew as I was writing Into the West, and then it broke loose. I very much wanted to isolate Edmund and let him give free reign to his snarkiness, while at the same time learning a thing or three about diplomacy.

Initially I wanted each chapter to be 1000 words long, but that proved impossible almost from the start. While I know when to stop, I don't like to when I'm on a roll.

I decided Edmund would learn about being a smith mostly because my father was a welder and since I was little, I knew more about metal work than any other kid in my grade. A lot of what Edmund observes in the smithy and the smells and colors, I picked up when visiting my father's shop.

Despite knowing that, I did a ton of research. Like, insane amounts of research. Watching videos and interviewing people I knew who made weapons and grilling my dad without letting on he was contributing to a fanfic.

Edmund's fatigue at the end of the fic is based on my own after my first blackbelt testing - a year of hell that culminated in a solid week of non-stop hell and oh, good lord, I was whipped. Edmund got to share in my fun.

Brickit and Brint very quickly became near and dear to my heart, and I felt so awful about Bricket's past that I decided to marry him off. Belana - whose name I borrowed from a lovely woman who translated some of my stories into Russian - has been waiting in the wings for a very long time. If I can wrench my brain out of Final Space for a little while, I promise to finish her story.

I want to write at least one more story directly around the Blue River Smithy, because Brickit and Belana deserve children and Cousin Biss needs to find a wife worthy of his surliness.
