I always felt so short-changed that I didn’t grow up close with my dads family even though they live 20 minutes away. I never understood why we barely knew them, only saw them a couple times a year, why he didn’t let us speak Spanish even though that’s mostly all they speak. It’s a goddamn fucking shame it took him dying for me to fully understand why. And I’m grateful now for being sheltered from it for so long, but sad that this is what I have to fight through for him. I want to do right by him and it’s almost impossible but I will not give up.
