@sun-loving-boy wants to play
Morty knew when Grampa Ricky left him alone with just Grampa Rick, that the night was probably going to be something he’d remember for a while.
And boy was he right.
Rick had taken him to one of the night clubs he liked to visit from time to time, unfortunately, the man got drunk and disappeared from Morty’s sight. Leaving him alone around a bunch of drunk and creepy adults.
Oh god that lady wAS ONLY WEARING PANTIES.
Quickly averting big eyes, and Morty took off running between adults legs until he eventually ran into someone and fell back on his butt. Eyes going up to meet with a pretty colorful character.
“S-S-Sorry.” The tiny boy piped up nervously. Tears threatening to form as he looked around and went to get back up on his feet.

“Uh.. E-E-Excuse me?”
Morty went to reach up and tug at the other’s pants until he got his attention. The tiny tot staring up at him in nervous fear before he looked around, tears welling up in his eyes, before he looked back up at him.
“I-I lost my grampa... Can you help me?”

@mortiny
Life was starting to change. Rick wasn’t sure if for better or worse.
He wanted to say better. After all, Ricky agreeing to move in with him was a major victory, especially with the initial scare of the young man needing to think about it when Rick first proposed the idea at Christmas. However, the final thing that pushed Ricky happened to be tragedy in his Morty’s life.
From what Rick understood, the toddler had lost his entire family in a car accident. Probably all Jerry’s fault. Morty would have died had it not been for Ricky’s invention. Everyone went sometime, but Jesus Fucking Christ… At the very least, maybe Morty was young enough where the grief wouldn’t process the same as it would with an older kid, teen, or adult. He doubted the toddler would ever fully forget his family, but maybe it’d be easier to let go of them.
Naturally, Ricky couldn’t be around twenty-four-seven. And Rick never had to be anywhere, though he typically chose to go to Blue Velvet at night as the club’s owner.
Currently, circumstances left Rick and Morty alone at Rick’s mansion. Rick lifted his sunglasses, letting them rest on his head so he could look at the toddler without a filter. “Uh, so… You’re a baby, huh? How—How’s that working for you?” Okay. So he sucked with kids. He never wanted to hurt them like he’d accidentally hurt Beth when he was young and stupid, even though he was relatively sober at the moment. He’d been wasted during the accident with Beth all those years ago.
He thought he should pick Morty up but feared doing it at the same time. So he crouched down to the kid’s level instead, ignoring the way his old body ached. “Uh, you want TV? Food? Pool?”
Morty was still having a bit of a rough time since the entire incident had occurred. It had been about a month since then, but the toddler still seemed to be taking it sort of hard.
He’d been increasingly clingy to Ricky, always sticking by his leg and following him everywhere. So it was obvious when he wasn’t around, that Morty wasn’t too happy.
Right now it was just him and Rick in the mansion. And any other time it would have been okay, but he didn’t want Rick right now. He wanted his grandpa. He wanted Mimi. He wanted literally anyone else.
Some adults just gave off a weird vibe to kids, and Rick was definitely one of those adults. And when Rick spoke up to the toddler, this only seemed to prove that fact even more.
Morty was pretty sure this guy had never been around a kid in his life.
He watched him then as he crouched down to his level. And with a nervous expression, he held up his comfort blanket and hugged it to his chest. Just staring at him for a few moments before he ever decided to speak to him.
“C-Can I have some juice?” He finally piped up sheepishly. Raising his hand afterwards to point to the counter where his sippy cup was resting.

@mortiny | why are we like this
For Ricky it had all started out a day like any other. Nothing too surreal or exciting happened up until the point he got the call from Morty. He hadn’t even left his apartment, working on his projects and getting a little break away from everything else that had been happening recently. He wasn’t expecting very much more then this… Especially not what he saw when he answered the phone at Morty’s call. His heart already fluttering with anxiety a bit, even though he hoped it was just another nightmare or case of boredom, and not anything too serious… Unfortunately, as soon as he saw the holographic image of his grandson in such hysteria, he knew his greatest fears had come to life. He’s had plenty of his own nightmares involving Morty getting hurt - of him dying like so many other Morty’s did. It’s why he’d check up on him at such odd hours of the night, and why he gave him that watch to keep him safe when Ricky wasn’t around to do the job himself…. And here it was. Happening for real. Those screams coming from his grandson were something he’d never even imagined he’d hear. The likes of which sent chills of horror up his spine, and ultimately had him jumping off the couch to make a portal straight to wherever Morty was. It was only good thinking that he’d put a coordinates tracker on that bracelet as-well, letting him get to his grandson within seconds. The moment he saw the car, flipped over as it was and smoking – he rushed over to the closest back-door looking in to see Morty hanging upside down with the seat-belt holding him in. “M-Morty!” He knelt on the ground, his knees and palms probably getting cut and scraped by the glass surrounding him. He took the brunt of his portal gun and knocked off any remaining glass in the window before reaching in to grab Morty around his waist, bracing himself before unbuckling the seat-belt and holding the small boy up from falling into the debris. Only a quick glance at the surrounding bodies had him knowing that they - they were all probably… He shook his head, not letting himself think about it. He got Morty in his arms and pulled himself and the child up from the car, rushing away from it as the scent of burning gas hit his nose. Even if they were alive somehow - the car was about ready to blow at any second. He had to get Morty to safety first. He was breathing heavily, adrenaline pumping through his body being the only thing keeping him strong for the toddler. “Stay here, baby.” He said in a breathless tone, quickly getting Morty through a portal to his apartment before going back himself to the horrendous scene to try and do – something. Anything… In the end, it was simply too late. He could prevent an explosion with the tools he had on him that were made to do so, but a life? Three lives? It was impossible, and he was no doctor. All he could do was go back to his grandson… and take care of him first… “Morty - M-Morty.” He said in a rush as he came back fairly soon. He found the toddler and picked him up, holding him tightly as he stroked his hair. How was he going to tell the boy that his family was all probably dead? What was going to happen now? He had hoped so much that Morty wouldn’t have to go through something like this… that he would be a happy and healthy child always. “It’s okay, baby - I’m here…”
When his grandpa arrived at the scene just in time to rescue him, Morty was beyond his already panicked state. He was crying and his breathing was frantic as he watched the other break the remaining glass around the window. Then with tiny hands reaching out for the other, he wiggled nervously as his grandpa managed to get him unbuckled from his car seat and then pull him out of the broken window.
The smaller boy felt something nick at his leg at one point, but honestly he was far too scared right now to care about a possible cut to the leg.
As Ricky started off away from the car, Morty clung to him, and while looking over the man’s shoulder, started reaching a hand out, pointing and looking back at the other with tears falling down his cheeks.
“TH-THEY’RE STILL IN THERE! MOMMA AND DADDY AND SUMMER A-ARE STILL IN THERE!” Morty cried.
He didn’t understand why his grandpa was only helping him, what if the others were still alive??
He opened his mouth to say something again, but just as he did, Ricky opened a portal up with his portal gun, and after placing the toddler on the other side of it, Morty blinked and then stood up, fully prepared to jump right back through the portal despite Ricky’s demand to stay.
However, the portal closing up behind the older man kept Morty from doing just that. And with wide eyes he waited for the other to return. Tears still falling down his face as he continued to cry and hiccup nervously.
When Ricky finally returned though, Morty wasted no time going over to him in a blind run. Immediately reaching up as the other scooped him up into a hug and held him close. And with another shaky cry, Morty wrapped his small arms around the other’s neck. Hugging him back just as tight and coughing and sputtering as he choked on his own tears. Then took another deep breath afterwards.
“W-Where’s-- W-W-Where’s my momma?? W-Where are they??”
Morty had the worst feeling in his gut that he probably already knew what Ricky was going to say... But he didn’t want to think that way.

Fate is a Cruel Mistress
AKA: The Mun is a Horrible Person
The day had started out fairly nice for once. Morty was told that he and his family were on their way to Jerry’s parents’ home to visit, and for once everyone was together and nobody was arguing either.
Well.. If one didn’t count the couple of times Beth got mad at Jerry for going the wrong way or not listening to her when she told him to stop and ask directions... Typical dad things.
Morty had been staring out the window contently through all of this, comfortably placed in his car seat that he was starting to outgrow, while his sister Summer sat beside him. Singing along to a song that was playing on the radio and kicking her feet as she did so.
It was hard to remember when the last time his whole family was in one spot together.. It was pretty nice.... Though he really wished Grampa Ricky could be around too.
With this thought, the toddler glanced down to the bracelet on his wrist. The small band looked almost like a stop watch. Minus the watch part of course.
He remembered Grampa saying something about it giving him super powers... Whatever that meant.
He mostly liked it for the color.. And for the fact that Ricky gave it to him special.
“--JERRY STOP!!”
Morty’s head snapped up out of his thoughts at hearing his mother’s sudden scream. Then when he heard his sister following suit, the toddler quickly looked out the side window, just in time to see a truck heading towards them.
Out of instinct, Jerry slammed on the breaks. Lurching everyone forward, before the large semi-truck t-boned the car with a loud crashing sound.
The car began spinning, and the rest went by in a loud blurry flash of his sister flying up out of her seat, his mother being thrashed against the passenger window, and his dad spinning the steering wheel in a last small attempt to save everyone.
After that, Morty wasn’t sure. He remembered bringing his arms up to cover his head from the glass pouring in from every side of him, and he remembered feeling the car turn upside down at one point or another. But the rest was faded.
It was only when the chaos died down into an uncomfortable and eerie silence, that Morty found himself finally opening his eyes again nervously and looking around.
However, at this point in time, Morty was... Upside down.
But that was because the car was upside down too.
It was amazing his car seat stayed the way it was after all of that.... Wait--
Morty’s eyes started to focus more, and when he came back completely, he could see that the bracelet he was wearing, had luckily managed to keep Morty from getting pelt with glass or knocked out by the air bags.
That ‘super power’ Ricky had told him about, turned out to be some sort of blue forcefield... And... And it had just saved his life.
“Mommy...”
The toddler called out nervously, coughing a bit as he looked around more and noticed his family member all seeming to lie very very... Still.
... Oh.... Oh no.
“M-MOMMA??”
Morty tried to pry himself from his car seat, though the buckle seemed to be stuck. So with a frantic motion, Morty started kicking around wildly, shaking the last remains of the car around with every jostle.
“MOMMA!! DADDY?? SUMMER!!!”
Morty felt tears fill his eyes, and if it hadn’t been for the blood rushing to his head, and the weird smoke filling the car, he probably would have been panicking a whole lot more than he was already.
“GRAMPA RICKY!!” The toddler screamed again, kicking and thrashing around as his breathing picked up and fear entered his blood.
He was running out of time. The car smelled like gasoline. And if Morty knew anything when it came to all those action movies he stayed up late to watch without Jerry or Beth finding out.. It was that gasoline usually followed fire... Or worse.
Morty let out a scared cry at that, and after stopping his kicking, his eyes darted around the car.
However, when he remembered something else, his eyes widened and he quickly shifted and fumbled around in his pocket. Eventually pulling out a small metallic box and pressing the button quickly.
When the other finally showed up as a glowing blue hologram in front of him.
“GRAM--”
The car let out a loooong groaning creak, the weight shifting a bit and causing Morty to almost drop to device and let out another crying scream.
“G-GRAMPA!!”

“You were never bad, Morty. You’re good. Okay? D-Don’t let anyone ever tell you you’re not. Because they’re liars…” He’d always tell Morty this. He was good - not perfect, although to the young man, he might as well be. But he shouldn’t ever think of himself as ‘bad’. “Now… how do you feel about getting your presents early?” He smiled, ruffling the toddlers hair. Trying to get him to not look so gloomy. “And maybe we can make some cookies. How does that sound?” Seemed like it would be fine if he took Morty for the night. If they hadn’t noticed him sitting here alone crying, they wouldn’t notice him not being here at all. It burned Ricky in a lot of ways. “You feelin’ alright now?”
There was another sniffle at that, then with big eyes, he looked up at Ricky, only to give the teeniest tiniest smile at the mention of presents and cookies.
Tonight may have started off bad, but he had a feeling if anyone could turn something around like this, it would be his Grampa Ricky.
So after a few moments, Morty finally gave the smallest nod, then after wiping his face off again and taking a breath to calm himself down, he smiled shyly.
“Th-That sounds good.”
Another sniffle and a sigh, and then Morty gave another nod.
“Y-Yeah.. I feel better now... Th-thankyou Grampa Ricky..”
Merty already got him a puppy. But you wanna know what's better than a puppy? TWO PUPPIES. Except the puppy Mortimer got tiny Morty is a little....ALIEN. And Spiky. Is that a spiky space hyena puppy?
This was turning out to be probably the coolest Christmas ever.
Who even cared if he found out Santa wasn’t real. He had TWO puppers that were all his and were super precious and adorable and–
Morty let out an excited noise at the sight of the spiky new friend before he ran over to Mortimer. The other small puppy trotting behind him.
Then as he got to the other, he held his arms up excitedly, only to carefully take the new friend in his arms and just give the biggest smile as the small thing nibbled at his shirt and then gave him a kiss or two.
These two were probably the coolest brothers ever and Morty was BEYOND happy with how things were turning out.
“Th-thank you so so much!! B-Best brother EVERRR!!”
Both of them were, really. Merty and Mortimer had both taken Morty under their wings and had treated him so nice, he was definitely going to remember this for the rest of his life.

Seeing his grandson cry broke the young mans heart into pieces. He never liked seeing Morty upset. He’d do anything to make him happy all the time, but he knew that wasn’t possible. And even though he loved his daughter in any universe - he couldn’t help but to feel rather angry at what she’d apparently said. Perhaps she and Jerry just couldn’t afford the presents… or they were too young and lazy to try harder. Either way, there was no excuse for leaving Morty all alone like this. Ricky pulled the toddler up into his lap, giving him a warm kiss on the head as he rubbed his back soothingly. “You’ve been really good this year, Morty…. okay?“ Shit. he couldn’t believe Beth let Morty buy into all of that. Sure it taught lessons of dealing with disappointments and all of that crap, but Morty - he’s probably dealt with more of that then any kid should have to… “But… Morty. You know - Santa Claus isn’t actually real, right? He’s just… kind of like Christmas’ mascot. Or something. Like the Easter-bunny, and those polar bears on coke commercials. He’s just usually… white old guys in red suits.” He smiles, taking his thumb to help wipe some of those tears away. Theoretically, he might exist in other dimensions. But he didn’t need to explain all of that to a kid so young.
As soon as he was pulled into the older’s lap, he brought a tiny hand up to grip Ricky’s shirt as he half-buried his face in him and gave a shaky sniffle. Then as he listened to the other speak. There actually seemed to be a small pause in his crying
Then as he took in this new information, his little brows furrowed for a moment, as if thinking hard and long about this. And after a few minutes of being silent, and letting Ricky wipe the remaining tears from his cheeks, he gave another sniffle, then looked up at the other.
“... H-He’s not?”
Another quiet pause, and Morty looked around the room, then back at Ricky. Bringing the palm of his hand up to rub at his eye sheepishly.
“.... Oh..... So.. S-so does that mean--”
He sniffled again.
“Does that mean that I-I’m not bad then?”
❝ heya, squirt. ❞ he’s no santa claus, but if the sizeable box in his arms is any indication, merty still comes bearing gifts nonetheless. ❝ i was actually hoping to SURPRISE you, ❞ he takes in the child’s expression with a small frown, ❝ but you know what? i think now is a good time. this isn’t the sort of PRESENT you can just leave sitting around for long, anyways. ❞ even if he did go through the trouble of poking an ample amount of air holes.
❝ alright.. ❞ carefully, merty crouches to place the box down before him. someone with a sharp set of eyes might notice the way it appears to rock ever so slightly, as if something is MOVING around inside. ❝ don’t be SCARED, okay? she’s really friendly, trust me. ❞
when morty lifts the lid to his present, he’ll be greeted by an adorable sight- a tiny puppy. upon noticing her new OWNER, the dog’s tail begins wagging at a furious pace, and she quickly scampers over to greet him. unfortunately, the box is a bit too tall for her; even standing up on her hind legs, she still isn’t big enough to CLIMB out on her own.
❝ i just thought you could use a FRIEND, you know? ❞ merty explains over the pup’s excited yips. ❝ she’s related to one of mine. ❞ he had deliberately picked her out because she was such a SWEETHEART; he could already tell this was the sort of dog who couldn’t hurt a fly.
❝ we can figure out her living arrangements later, okay? ❞ he wasn’t sure how morty’s parents would react to a surprise dog. truth be told, they didn’t really matter to him. ❝ in the meantime, merry christmas, kiddo. ❞
If truth had been told, Morty wasn’t exactly having the greatest Christmas experience in the world this year.
However, all of this seemed to be taking a turn as soon as Merty came into the room. And holding a HUGE present no less!
The tiny tot’s eyes widened at the sight, and after quickly wiping a tear from his cheek, he stared curiously now as Merty came inside and went to set the box down in front of him.
The toddler didn’t seem to catch on the small movement of the box, because he had now looked back up at Merty in shock as he listened to him talk. However, upon hearing something about a ‘she’, Morty blinked, then went to stand up so he get a better look inside.
“.. Sh-she?”
He watched then as Merty went to open the flaps. And it only took one glimpse, before Morty had immediately perked up at the sight of the small adorable puppy now in his room.
Then in a small burst of excitement, Morty let out a SCREAM, though it was high-pitched and very much an overjoyed one.
Then without wasting a minute, the toddler reached into the box and after fumbling a bit clumsily, he finally managed to pick the tiny thing up and hold her close to his chest. Laughing and squealing as the tiny pup wiggled in his embrace and covered his face in tiny kisses.
“SH-SHE’S SO- SO CUTE!!” Morty exclaimed brightly, only to turn and look at Merty now, before scrambling over to him. Puppy still in his arms, and just immediately nuzzle his body into Merty’s own.
It was an attempt at a hug, though Morty really couldn’t bring himself to let the puppy go just yet.
“Th-thank you Merty!! Y-You’re the best big brother EVER!!”
He buried his face in his shirt for a moment then, at least until his words seemed to hit him. Then with eyes widening again, the toddler immediately took a step back, petting the pup and looking at the other sheepishly.
“O-Oh uh.. I-I mean– I— I’m sorry– I didn’t–”

Ricky didn’t know what Morty’s Christmas eve would be like. He didn’t know if the kid would be busy with his family, or out to celebrate like all the other families did. But it was also just sort of… hard dealing with anything during this time of year. Morty certainly wasn’t the only one who felt unhappy during the holiday, and if he’d have known sooner how his grandson would be spending his… he might have come to check up on him a lot sooner. He appeared in the kids room, stepping out of his portal and spotting him right away on his bed. He was holding a bag in his hand, figuring he might give Morty his presents. When he saw that his grandson was crying he blinked, smile fading as he walked over to his bed to silently sit next to him, setting the bag down on the floor. “Hey, buddy. What’s goin’ on?” He wrapped an arm around him, instantly going in to comfort the little tot.
When Ricky entered the room through his portal, Morty heard him, but made no move to run over or even acknowledge him. Instead, he just wiped at his eyes again as tears fell.
However, when the older came over to take a seat on the bed beside him and eventually pull him close, Morty felt himself hiccup a bit then. Lip quivering now as he finally brought himself to look up at Ricky.
“.. M-M-Momma said that-- That Santa isn’t.. Coming this year.”
The boy gave a shaky breath at that, and after giving another messy sniffle and wiping his nose on his sleeve once again, he looked back down, then after going silent for another moment, he finally went to rest his head against the other and just look down.
“I-I don’t understand either.. I-I-I was really-- I was really good this year.. A-At least I thought that I was.”
