Narcissa Black in Diagon Alley
Taken by Adromeda Black, whom Narcissa promptly ran into
“Oh! I do apologize, I shouldn’t have assumed,” he smiled, setting both drinks down. “Oui. Surely you’ve met at least one of my older sisters at some point or another. They take pleasure in attending social functions around here every now and then.”
Looking down at the table full of alcoholic beverages, Francois paused briefly and added with a grin, “I’ve been told I make an excellent Shirley Temple.”
Narcissa’s polite smile melted a few degrees warmer when he set the drinks down with no argument. She’d expected an attempt to convince her. It was what she’d encountered from a lot of partygoers after all. She put a hand on the table and leaned a little, blue eyes sliding over the different drinks on the table.
After a slight pause, Narcissa nodded firmly, “I’d love a Shirley Temple. Thank you, Francois.” She glanced away from him for a moment and looked over the party. She pretended that she wasn’t keeping a close eye out for Lucius. Would he even come to the Halloween party? It was probably best that he didn’t. She was upset with him after all. Her attention refocused on Francois, “Are you enjoying the party?”

ms-bella-black
Oh no. Bellatrix knew the smile Narcissa had glued to her face, a look of sweetness and innocence with a glint of darkness in her eyes. This look meant Narcissa had settled on an idea and it was going to happen.. no matter what.
“Of course.” Bellatrix sighed and gave her sister the best smile she could muster, she figured she owed her anyway for the debacle of an outing today. “We’ll have such fun.” She said and wondered if getting high with the french boy would ease her agitation at bridal shopping.
Bella chewed her lip thoughtfully as Narcissa spoke and wondered how Andromeda would react to the news. Would she be upset? Angry? Disappointed? Perhaps a cocktail of negative emotion toward her sister? She rolled her eyes and shook the thoughts away, frustrated she even had to be thinking about it. In Bella’s perfect world, Andromeda would be on her side like Narcissa had been earlier that day, raising in wand in defence.
“You plan the day with Andy, just tell me when to be ready to go.” She said quietly as she sat down in one of the armchairs opposite Narcissa, a growing headache causing her pain from her constant whirlwind of conflicting thoughts.
Narcissa’s smile softened. She could see that her sister was making an effort to make up for the mess that their afternoon had turned into. She wasn’t quite sure bridal shopping would be the fix all for what she’d witnessed today but it was certainly a step in the right direction and it meant a lot to her that her sister was trying to make it better. She rested her head on her arm, her eyes flickering out over the common room. It was still rather empty. Many of the students were doing things, whether it be homework or spending time with friends. Fine by me, she thought. It gave her more peace and quiet.
“Sounds like a plan,” She said happily, sitting back up once more. She watched her sister fall into the armchair and took a moment to watch her face. Bellatrix seemed frustrated. She was sure that she’d be able to guess why. Underneath the surface, Narcissa felt frustrated too. She needed to get by herself so she could reflect over the events of the day in solitude. After a brief moment of silence, her eyes flickered back to Bellatrix.
“Bella, I think I’m going to head back up to my room. I’ve got a lot of Potions homework.” She plastered a bright smile on her face, “Plus, I’ve got a bridal shopping day to plan for us.” Neither of these things were lies. Both of them needed to be done. What she didn’t say, was that she would be doing those later in the evening. She wanted to get upstairs and just think. She leaned forward and brushed her hand against her sister’s leg, “I’ll see you at dinner tonight, right?”
“Have you ever noticed that the new DADA professor comes into class over ten minutes late each time? I think it’s a Hogwarts rule that you’re able to get up and leave if they’re not in the classroom within the first half of the class. Anyone willing to walk out with me on Thursday?”
“I have noticed that,” Narcissa responded, her nose scrunching up in slight annoyance. Narcissa was a firm believer in punctuality and to have that so easily discarded by a Professor no less was nothing less than scandalous in her opinion. “It’s annoying, but I still don’t think I can walk out. I’ve got grades to keep up, you know.”
Emma was pretty sure she’d never really seen Narcissa drink. Of course, she’d seen her with a glass of wine or two, but not like most of her other friends drank. Not like she drank. She could do with some more self-control on that part, especially considering she’d been drinking every night since the Halloween party. It was the only thing that had kept her from breaking down over the letter she’d received a few days ago. It was the only thing that made it possible for her to act like she didn’t care about Evan. Or about anything else. It made her behave more like she usually did, and that was good.
As Narcissa made herself busy with rearranging her pillows, Emma spread out her various snacks as well and put her own pillow against one of the bedposts for a more comfortable position. She noticed her friend eyeing the bottle of champagne, and a small grin spread across her lips. While Emma would drink anything and everything, she’d guessed Narcissa wouldn’t, and had opted out of bringing Firewhisky as a beverage. Instead, she’d dug out this bottle of champagne, an expensive gift from one of the Bulgarian Quidditch players she’d trained with this summer. Of course, she’d thanked him for it later. “It’s French, a brand I’ve never had before, but my father said it’s supposed to be one of the best.” She explained to Narcissa, not sure if she’d ever had champagne before.
It felt good to see Narcissa brighten up by her company, and she almost couldn’t notice the dark circles under her eyes anymore when she smiled. Her friend might not want to talk about it, but Emma could take her mind off it, that she was sure about. “This is your crazy? Merlin, Cissa–I’m going to have to pry you away from that Potions homework more often now.” She shook her head, before letting a soft gasp escape her lips when the blonde mentioned getting drunk for the first time. “Wait, you’ve actually never been drunk before? Never?” She repeated herself, eyebrow raised. “Not even at home, during one of those dreadful Christmas parties?”
Emma noticed Narcissa’s curiosity towards the bottle again and held it out towards her. Normally, she’d take the first gulp herself, but the way her friend had been eyeing the champagne made her curious to see the way she’d respond to it. When she thanked her for coming, Emma’s typical grin was replaced with a bit of a softer smile, as she tilted her head sideways. “I missed hanging out with you. And honestly, sneaking out of the castle again is definitely not better than this.” She laughed, before placing a hurt hand over her heart. “Forced? And here I was thinking you were all for this idea.”
As she relaxed into the pillow, Narcissa’s eyes slid over the various snacks that Emma was laying out across the bed. She quickly zeroed in on a Chocolate Frog and decided that would the first snack she would eat. After looking over the snacks she spared a quick glance at Emma and blushed a little at the grin on her friend’s face. She was letting loose in a way that she never had before. Truthfully, she was a bit nervous to get drunk. She’d seen all of her friends make fools of themselves to varying degrees and she didn’t want to embarrass herself. Still, she did trust Emma, and if there were any person she had to pick to see her be a goofy drunk then it would probably be her friend.
“Well, if your father says it’s one of the best then that’s all I need to know.” She said playfully. Emma’s family had a taste for extravagance in the same way that Narcissa did, and she knew that her friend would never bring over anything but the best. Emma’s teasing comment pulled another laugh from her chest. She reached for one of the smaller pillows on her bed and lightly swatted Emma, “Oh, stop it. Of course this is crazy for me. Imagine what my mother would say if she heard about this.” She set her pillow back down and leaned back against her bedframe. “Nope, not even at the Christmas parties. I mean, there were times that I thought about it. But my family is always there and I would never want them to find out I did that.” She made a face, not liking the mere thought of her mother catching wind of her doing anything improper.
When Emma offered her the bottle she wasted little time in leaning forward to grab it. She brought it up to her face so she could further check out the design. She looked up and over towards Emma, “How much will I have to drink to get drunk?” She asked curiously. She had very little tolerance so she assumed that it didn’t have to be much. Hesitantly, she lifted it closer to her mouth. She’d had champagne before. It reminded her of the few drinks she had consumed. Never anything more than a glass of wine here and there, or one glass of champagne at special events. This was different, though. She was drinking with an endgame in mind, and that was her ending up drunk.
After a brief pause, she brought it to her mouth and took a large sip. It bubbled as it slid down her throat and she was pleasantly surprised by how wonderful it tasted. She set the bottle down in her lap and looked towards Emma, a light smile on her face. That was nice. She could this, easily. She picked it back up again and leaned forward to set it in her friend’s lap so she could take her sip now. As the conversation switched to a topic a little more genuine, Narcissa found herself appreciating Emma and their friendship. She smiled, “I am all for this idea. I just didn’t expect it to happen.” She smiled even wider and motioned towards the bottle, “Go on, it’s your turn!”

revenge and fights / narcissa & alecto
Alecto would openly admit she was bored, but she would rather Narcissa’s company over some other uninteresting mudblood, or a younger year who she would usually torment. As she continued to push the food around on her plate, her attention began to divert towards Narcissa’s words yet again. A small smirk appeared upon her lips as she heard the little Black’s boasting of how she would be able to pass them. It was the same for Alecto, if not even easier for her since she was a year older than Narcissa - but it was interesting how the little Black did want to flaunt this. “Oh is that so? What a pity you aren’t in our year then.” She refused to rise up to the little Black’s taunts, not when she had something to hold over her head.
Narcissa couldn’t put her foot on it, but she just had a bad feeling about Alecto today. Alecto was volatile on her best days and Narcissa was wary of that. Still, this interaction between them wasn’t out of the ordinary. No different from any other conversation they’d ever had. Still, she couldn’t help but feel unsettled. She looked at Alecto, tilting her head ever so slightly. She smiled sardonically, “It is a pity, isn’t it? Nothing that I can do about it, though. Besides, -- It’s probably a blessing in disguise. I’m sure Lucius would hate to compete against me in classes.”
Genevieve was unsure why Narcissa seemed so unsure about her outfit. Albeit it was much more daring than she would have expected for Narcissa - but she did look absolutely divine, if Genevieve did think so herself. She shifted her stance as she held her cup close towards her body, contemplating whether she wanted to drink this certain concoction slowly or all in one go - similar to her cousin. However her attention was diverted by Narcissa’s compliment, as she began to comment about her outfit. A small pleased smile began to appear upon Genevieve’s lips as she replied, “Thanks Cissa. I guess, although this is much more Em’s scene than mine.”
“Of course it’s much more Emma’s scene,” Narcissa responded, giggling a little bit, “It’s a party. I never see her more at home than when she’s doing stuff like this. ------ Well, actually, I guess she does look very at home when she’s playing Quidditch, doesn’t she?” Her eyes flickered around the room briefly before returning and resettling on Genevieve, “I’m glad you’re having a good time. I’m having a much better time now that I’m talking to you, though. Most of the school is here and most of the school is rather annoying.”
little dove | narcissa & bellatrix

Bella’s mind emptied itself slowly of her growing anger and stress caused by the events of the day, the feeling of Narcissa leaning into her warming at the contact and putting the elder sister at ease.
She offered her a soft smile once they were in the common room and Narcissa spoke again, chuckling a little as she thought of her first intentions when getting Narcissa up for the day and how they hadn’t gone to plan. “I’m glad I did too. Can’t have that pretty face hidden in here all day can we?” She smiled affectionately at her younger sister and booped tapped her nose gently with her sharp fingernail, like a mother might do to her small child. Bellatrix paced around armchairs of the common room rather than actually sitting in one like Narcissa had, observing that it was mostly empty bar a few lurking figures in the far corner that Bella didn’t care to worry about for now.
“We could all go wedding shopping and try on veils and flowers and all that dribble.” Bella suggested sarcastically and rolled her eyes, smirking a little as she looked toward her sister. To most people in their situation it would seem like a lovely idea, but Bellatrix felt almost ill at the thought of having to try on something that was so… white. “Mother would be pleased, we can’t have that.” She joked and continued pacing, letting her hand drag over the smooth, dark leather of the chairs in the room.
“That is if Andromeda still thinks fondly of me after today…” She frowned slightly and bit her lip as she thought of how Andromeda would react after hearing of Bella’s attack. Andy wasn’t pleased whenever she saw Bella experimenting with dark magic, so more than likely she wouldn’t be thrilled to hear her sister had attacked an innocent student over a rumour about herself. She shook the frown away quickly, confused by her own thoughts. Did she care? Well yes but it was Andromeda who was in the wrong for mingling with the lesser.. wasn’t it?
Narcissa could not help but to roll her eyes when her sister decided it was prudent to tap boop her on the nose. She waved her sister away and leaned further into the sofa’s cushions. The interaction reminded her of their times together as little girls. She smiled wistfully as she watched Bellatrix pace around the couches. Things had been so simple back then, hadn’t they? All they had to worry about was not upsetting their mother while they played. Now, they had to stress over marriage proposals and bloodtraiterous cousins. She sighed. When had it gotten all messed up?
“Mother would be pleased,” Narcissa conceded. Their mother would eat something like the three of her daughters up. It was a respectable activity for respectable ladies and there was nothing that Druella Black loved more than that. Narcissa smiled brightly, the one she used whenever she wanted to get her way, “I would love it too. Who cares about her? We would have fun shopping together.” She paused, her eyes flickering up to Bella, “Wouldn’t we?”
Narcissa paused, her eyes widening slightly as she thought about Andy. What would her other sister say whenever she found out about what Bella had done. Surely she wouldn’t be okay with it. The last thing she wanted to see was her sisters arguing. Hopefully they were able to avoid a situation such as that. She only allowed herself to dwell over this for a split second though, because she was still speaking to her sister. She leaned forward, frowning a little bit, “I’m sure Andy won’t be happy, but she’ll understand.”
“Yes, it could have been much worse,” she said. “And yes, I did get it back. Amelia Bones was quite understanding-turns out she had my book and I had hers. We switched, and that was that.“ To be honest, the ordeal had been irritating, yes, but it had been a bit of a change from the monotony. Especially since so many people had been victims.
Mei examined the lock for a bit, before saying, “So, how do you think we can get out of this? It’s not like there’s a key on hand, so…will the caretaker notice?”
Would the caretaker notice? Doubt it, Narcissa thought nastily, her nose curling up at the thought of Filch. The man absolutely disgusted her. Not to mention that he was absolutely useless. He’d probably be too busy complaining about something stupid to notice any noise coming from where they were. A sigh fell from Narcissa’s lips and she leaned back against the wall, “I don’t think there is anything we can do for right now. I suppose we’ll have to wait until we hear somebody outside.”
Sketching
Andromeda nodded and put away her things not feeling up to drawing anymore, “I know he does, you know what I meant, he has feelings for you, it’s not just an arrange marriage he really wants to marry you, and you him. I can tell.” she admitted being a little envious of her sister, what wouldn’t she give to have someone like that in her life? “I know, he tries to distance himself so he seems more regal or something, strong enough to be the heir. Even when Sirius was part of the family.” she admitted looking at her hands and thinking of Regulus all alone next year, no more late night reading books and trying to convince him there were more people in his life that still loved him, he would get swallowed by darkness and Andromeda was afraid of that. “No, nothing.” she echoed and looked at Narcissa, “Maybe he’s nice, but according to what father says his business is in France, it might take a while to move back here.”
Narcissa couldn’t help but feel satisfied at hearing her sister’s words. She was proud of the betrothal that she had found herself in. Her marriage was one of the greatest prestige, but it was more than that. She’d found a companion in Lucius, and though they were still getting to know each other, she knew that one day they would be close. She hoped so, anyways. “How do you know you won’t want to marry your person, Andy?” She said, unable to stop the slight exasperation that slipped it’s way into her tone, “You haven’t even met him yet. He could surprise you, you know.” She pursed her lips, “Regulus is scared. I don’t blame him. If what happened with Sirius happened with you-- or Bella, I don’t know what I would do.”
Narcissa was balling the sheets in to her fist and Emma tried hard not to take notice of this. She had a feeling her friend didn’t want any questions, not yet at least, and she didn’t mind giving her that privacy. She was very familiar herself with the hiding of emotions–it seemed to be something of an elitist Pureblood trait. Still, she knew the blonde was incredibly good at it, even better than herself, something which again, she envied about her. She was always so strong. Which is why the way she was behaving now worried her a bit. What could’ve upset her in such a way? Her mind quietly went out to Lucius, and she made a silent promise to hex him if he had done something to upset her, even if he was her friend too.
Could it have been him? The last time she’d seen Narcissa and him together they looked.. well, happy. But then again, she knew he could be an absolute ass from time to time as well. She wanted to ask, being naturally curious, as usual, but forced herself to shut up, not wanting to pressure her friend in to anything.
“You’re interested?” Emma was honestly a bit surprised, but a grin appeared on her lips in excitement. She did really need this. She needed to talk to Narcissa about her own situation as well, especially considering it involved her cousin, and was glad she was up for a night of just being alone with her. Sure, she enjoyed talking to her own cousin about these things as well, but currently there was something drawing her to the fellow Snake to talk about it first.
When Narcissa told her to pop it, that she could use a drink, Emma raised her eyebrows again in surprise. “Who are you and what have you done to Narcissa Black?” She laughed out loud, which turned even louder when she heard the giggle coming off her lips. “Well, I need a drink too, so let’s get this sleepover going.” She spoke excitedly, before holding the bottle sidewards and focussing on the cork for a brief moment. It popped out almost instantly, and she couldn’t help but let out a soft squeal.
Though she had expected it, the surprise on Emma’s face still made Narcissa laugh. Emma, more than any of her friends, was the one that had tried to get her to drink the most. More often than not, Narcissa turned her down. After all, she had far better things to be doing with herself than getting drunk. There were books to be read, people to talk to, and plans to be made and she couldn’t very well do that if she were inebriated. The few times she had agreed to drink had hardly been memorable considering she’d only allowed herself two drinks at the most, which didn’t make for any real drunkenness on her part.
“I am.” She responded, settling back against her pillows. That was a bit uncomfortable, though, what with how the pillows were arranged, so she made herself busy by putting them all into the best position that would allow her to lay at her most comfortable. When she settled, her eyes were drawn once more to the alcohol. At least the first time she would actually be drinking was with champagne. Narcissa considered herself a high class kind of a girl and what better way to prove that than to get drunk for the first time on champagne. She eyed the label, knowing that it was no doubt very expensive champagne as well. Emma wasn’t the type to buy cheap anything. It was actually one of the reasons they got along so well.
Emma’s laughter only amplified her own, turning her small giggles into something a bit more. Relief poured over her body as she realized that she was actually laughing, actually smiling. For the past few days she’d found herself lost in a fog. Any smiles that found their way to her face had surely been fake, but this, this moment with Emma...it was real. She brought her knees to her chest and then wrapped her arms around them, “I just feel-- “ She paused, biting into her bottom, “I feel like being crazy, just for once. What’s crazier than getting drunk for the first time?”
There was a brief pause as her brain flooded her with tons of ideas that were far crazier than drinking. Of course, she wasn’t feeling that crazy. Drinking suited her just fine. The cork popped out of the bottle as quickly as a spell shot from a wand and her own surprised squeal joined Emma’s. She leaned forward towards her friend, peering curiously at the bottle in her hand. Most of her experience with drinking alcohol involved wine. She wasn’t sure she’d ever tasted champagne before. Her eyes flickered up to meet her friend’s, "Thanks for coming up here, Emma.” She released her knees and settled back into her wall of pillows, “I didn’t know that I needed a sleepover until you came up here and forced one on me.”
revenge and fights / narcissa & alecto
Alecto pushed around the food in her plate, uninterested in it - similarly to the conversation she had begun to have with Narcissa. She began to glance briefly at their surroundings, wondering what sort of consequences could happen if she began to spill her juicy secret. The little Black would have to control her rage - especially since she would be surrounded by so many other years, especially the lions. However, she would play nice for now, unless the Black decided to infuriate her further. “Not really, the usual.” She replied, shrugging lightly as she began to say, “DADA, Potions, Charms…”
Narcissa led her spoon through the thick liquid in her bowl, absentmindedly pushing around a piece of chicken as Alecto listed off some of her classes. She looked up and glanced around, wondering if anybody else would be coming to dinner so she wouldn’t have to spend the whole time making small talk with Alecto. She set her spoon down and reached for her glass of pumpkin juice. After taking a small sip, she glanced back up to Alecto, “Well good look with you’re studying. -- I still have to wait an entire year to take mine. I wish I could just take them now,” She shrugged her shoulders, “I’ve glanced at some of Lucius’s homework and the material seems fairly easy. I probably learned most of it before I even came to Hogwarts.” If her voice came off as bragging then it was probably because that was exactly what she was doing. Narcissa was smart, exceptionally so really. She was one of the best in her class and was usually tied for first with Regulus, which made sense seeing as how they had very similar upbringings.
Sketching
Andromeda shook her head, “He’s smitten, he might come pretending to be interested in Quidditch just to talk to you,” she said sincerely, Lucius truly loved Narcissa it wouldn’t be a surprise he was there more often than not. “He’s goign to be lonely too, Cissy…” she said quietly and sighed, knowing fair well that France was far away, that it might be on the other side of the world, but she didn’t want to think that, she didn’t want to think of how miserable she would be all alone in the other side of the world. “It’s not up to me, nothing it’s up to me.”
“It wouldn’t be pretending,” Narcissa said aimlessly, “Lucius likes Quidditch. -- Either way, he’ll be much too busy with learning the family business to come and see me. And it’s fine. I never expected any different.” She had resigned herself to knowing she would be painfully alone next year, but that didn’t mean she had to like it. “Regulus is always lonely... even if people are there or not.” Narcissa said gently, her heart twisting as she did so. It felt... mean to say such things about her cousin, even if she did not say them maliciously. It was just a fact. Her mind drifted towards Andy and her future husband. She wondered when they would finally learn about who he was, “Nothing isn’t up to you,” She admonished gently, her eyes flickering up towards her sister, “Who’s to say that this man isn’t a nice bloke?” She bit into her lip, “I know that Lucius would move to France if I wanted him to. Maybe your husband will be the same?”
Rosemond tilted her head slightly to the side. The Slytherin seemed standoffish in the way that her eyes flickered across the room. Either that or she really didn’t want to be talking to Rose. Still, even Rosemond knew that standoffish wasn’t the norm for Narcissa. “Everyone has an agenda. Even if one is simply going with the flow of things, he or she always has a vision of how certain events should proceed,“ she stated matter-of-factly, coming off as more Ravenclaw than she would have liked.
Rosemond phrased her next words with care, not sure about the way the blonde would take her analysis. “That said, it sounds like your agenda just happens to be supporting Emma. Though yes, she and McKinnon did a great job putting this together,” she agreed. “I take it you’re not a huge fan of parties?” After Rose asked this, the question of why Narcissa would wear such a - well - form fitting costume if this was the case popped into her mind. However, she bit her tongue.
The girl’s matter-of-fact tone didn’t sit well and in response, one of her eyebrows lifted into a sharp arch as she peered at the girl in front of her. Her previous desire to maintain a civil conversation began to slip away like sand from her fingers. Narcissa did not like the tone being used towards her. She didn’t like that Rosemond seemed to think that she knew that Narcissa must have an agenda. “You’re wrong.” Narcissa answered flatly, leaving no room in her tone for disagreement. In fact, she welcomed Rosemond to argue with her just so that Narcissa could put her in her place.
Rosemond seemed to realize what effect her words had on Narcissa and it looked as if she chose her next sentence carefully. Narcissa’s temper settled just as quickly as it flared, having realized that she had avoided such a situation. She supposed that her agenda was to support Emma, after all. Well, she didn’t consider such a thing an agenda, but she knew how it could be seen that way. Her next question -- no no, statement -- had her annoyance flare up again. What made this girl think she was allowed to make such assumptions? Never mind that they were correct. “I can’t possibly imagine what led you think such a thing,” Narcissa said coolly, the words falling from her lips the way one could imagine an icicle falling from the sky, “I quite enjoy parties, actually. Though, I’ll admit that I prefer get togethers of a... higher class.”
Genevieve let a small smile appear upon her features as she began to converse with Narcissa, one of the rare people upon in this room she could actually tolerate. Passing an approving eye over Narcissa’s attire, a small laugh escaped Genevieve’s lips as she nodded at the girl’s reply. It was certainly more daring than she would have expected from Cissa, but it certainly fit the theme, and if anything - Genevieve had picked something rather bold as well. “Of course not - it is Halloween, and you look stunning.”
Though Geneiveve couldn’t know it, her words did a lot to settle Narcissa’s tumultuous nerves. If Genevieve didn’t think it looked too out of place then she supposed it wasn’t as big of a deal as she had been been making it out to be. Then again, Genevieve could just be saying that. It’s not as if she would tell Narcissa to her face how shameful it was for her to wear such a thing. Her thoughts faltered for a moment before she pushed such an idea from her head. It would do her no good to think about that now. She smiled gratefully, “Thank you, Genevieve.” She took a moment to allow her gaze to run over the other girl’s outfit, “You look lovely as well. Are you having a good time?” She asked, genuinely interested in what her friend had to say.
