Do y'all ever read a fic so good that it makes you want to elevate your own craft and also befriend the writer? It's almost like, "Hi! You write so well that you've inspired me to embark on a creative training arc. Also, can I yell about the character in your dms because you get it?"
Ok but this is actually me but I’m so nervous to do this 90% of the time because I feel like it’s awkward as hell to just rock up in my favorite writer’s DMs and be like “hey I adore your work can we be friends and yell about this thing together and vibe” I don’t know how to social skills. I need a “socializing and social cues for dummies” book. I’m awkward as fuck and a murder of anxious crows in a trench coat.

Start with a gushy comment on their fic. If they respond in kind, they'll probably be chill with you reaching out vis-a-vis DMing (but you can always double check via comment threads...)
