Everyone gets on the bandwagon when artists talk about not being paid/being paid next to nothing for their art, and having to field requests for free works, but I make one small comment about people taking a photoshop artists skills for granted and everyone loses their minds.

For those getting upsetty at my reaction to the James Fridman ‘shops

So a few people were questioning why I was dragging the people asking for FREE photoshops from James Fridman on his pretty rad Twitter account where people ask for SPECIFIC Photoshopping and because he is a great troll he creates something brilliantly different.

Basically peeps were implying I was being unfairly mean to the people being prank shopped when I argued they deserved it because they were asking for FREE skilled labour when requesting the VERY SPECIFIC Photoshopping.

The comments were that the posters were clearly aware of his sculduggery and knew their request would be twisted into something completely different and did it for the shiggles anyway. To them I say …DUH!

I’m sure the majority of the people are in on the joke and are sending pics in just to see what he will do with them, honestly it’s a great idea, if he is happy to do it then I think it’s a win win. But I was actually talking about the minority of people who didn’t get what they bargained for, the few that genuinely expect to get a great photoshop (because he is incredibly good at what he does) of themselves fy

Exhibit A is the picture above. She even says “no pranks”. It genuinely sounds like this person actually wants a good photoshop done of her face for FREE, a skill which takes TIME and often MONEY to master. Now I know straight up people are going to argue “how could they not know he is going ignore their requests and do his own thing” I mean he even warns you in his Twitter description. Well my answer is people are really silly and he occasionally does not-so-pranky edits.

Zap2it comments “the finishing touches he puts on these images are sometimes hilarious, sometimes a stab in the back and sometimes wonderfully sweet”. This is in reference to the few times he edits something sweet as asked or tells people they don’t need to be edited because they are perfectly fine the way they are (aww). But let me make this clear, he chooses to do these few for free of his own volition. So I repeat, those few people genuinely requesting free ‘shops of themselves so they can look like the Kardashians, GOT EXACTLY WHAT THEY DESERVED. I’m not insulting the great majority of people having fun WITH the artist.

Sorry not sorry if I sound super salty about the free work sentiment, but as a skilled and qualified camera operator I am constantly being bombarded with requests to use my own gear and time to film things for free, with promises of “experience” or “networking”. People have to stop expecting everything for nothing, skills cost money, if you don’t like it, go learn photoshop yourself

re: photoshop guy I think he doesn't mind the pictures sent to him but it's more Exact Words in most cases. (Also the biggest reason why I think he's okay with the requests is, look at that second screencap. You can't say that isn't sweet)

If he is asking for peeps to send it in then that's sweet, a fun way to break up the monotony. But I was commenting in general the people like he and I that receive requests for free work that waste our time.

The thing is he learned this skill, and he normally gets paid to do it, so these people are just wasting his time with the trivial and payless tasks. They deserve it. Don’t ask someone to do for free what they have worked hard to learn. If you want it don’t for free do it yourself, these are the results of free work.
