LOTTIE.
“A baby cousin’s ballet recital? I’m fascinated-was she part of the Nutcracker? When I was ten, I played the role of Clara.” She made no effort to conceal her arrogance-one of her greatest joys in life was teasing Adam.
“ All right, y’know what, take a break from bein’ a jackass for two seconds, huh? ” He chuckled good-heartedly, swatting at Lottie’s shoulder. “ Not everyone could go to the ballet on a lovely Friday night, all dressed to the nines with the family, okay? We never got up to that fancy shit. ”
LOTTIE.
ADAM.
“I can’t believe you’ve never been to a ballet. I mean, how uncultured was your upbringing, exactly?!”
“ Pretty fucking uncultured, actually. I mean, okay ---- one time I went to my baby cousin’s ballet recital. By baby I mean she was like...ten? So she was pretty advanced. ”
LAWRENCE GORDON.
fluorescent lights flashbulb behind his eyes, a reminder of death and bitter terror and the cold bite of saw teeth against his leg. someone he’d thought he’d never see again, someone like a GHOST behind him, driving him through every test, every procedure, giving his soul piece by piece to the memory of a man he’d barely known, a man he’d sold the rest of his life to jigsaw for. just like it had then, his perfect control evades him, leaves him hovering with a coffee cup forgotten in one hand and a cane in the other, staring at the man at the table, staring at … at … “ adam? “
@mostlypathetic / starter call.
Adam thought he may forget that face after enough time had passed. That somehow, in a fit of good karma, it would blur into nothing, and the collection features he saw in his dreams and all of his waking memories of blood and death and chains ( those cold tiles ) would fade away. But it never had. As clear as the first photo he had ever taken of him, as alive as Adam had convinced himself, long ago, that he couldn’t be -- there, in front of him.
“ Yeah? ” He’d heard his name before he looked up. The neutral relaxation of his expression melted away as his skin blanched, running cold. A million expletives rose in his throat and stuck there. The half-numb flesh of his right shoulder tingled as if prodded with electricity, his hand curling into a fist upon the table. Adam’s first instinct was to get up and leave, to run, but he found himself frozen. I’m fucking dreaming. “ -- Lawrence... ”

WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS.
Thin fingers found their way back into the pockets of her deep green overalls, pulling out a pack of camel cigarettes. Beverly paused, eyebrows furrowing together at the stranger’s sudden hostility. ❝ what? the lighter? i have it to light my cigarettes, obviously. ❞ Her shoulders shrugged as she finally lit her cigarette, inhaling deeply before exhaling cigarette smoke. ❝ so, what brings you to Derry, anyways? you some kind of photographer? ❞ the redhead said in reference to the camera that currently hung around his neck. ❝ never really thought about this town in terms of being photogenic, but i guess i could see the appeal. ❞
Color him stunned -- but he really shouldn’t be. Perhaps it had been too long since he was a kid; he smoked his first cigarette at thirteen. Granted, he didn’t smoke another one for two years after he coughed up his left lung behind the middle school, but still. “ I, uh -- yeah, I’m a photographer. Never been to Maine before, thought I oughta snag the opportunity. ” Adam still eyed her warily, the cigarette smoke tempting his vices, though wholly unnerving coming from a child. It would make for a great picture, if the thought of taking it didn’t make him feel like a total creep. “ So, is it somethin’ in the water around here, or does Derry just like to get its kids started on cancer as soon as possible? ”
i will always have nightmares of that day. no matter how much time has passed, i will always remember.the nightmares will never allow me to forget. i will never allow myself to forget.

Beverly held a cigarette between her teeth, the redhead clutching a lighter within the pocket of her overalls. Thin fingers began removing the lighter when a stranger nearby caught her eye. Curiosity enveloped the young girl as her gaze remained on the man who only drew closer and closer— Beverly wondering what brought the stranger to nowheresville, Maine. Derry didn’t offer anything to outsiders, much less the people who already lived there.
❝ hey— want a cigarette? ❞
It had to be given to the little shithole----Derry made for some amazing photo ops. Adam didn’t make trips out that far very often, and this one had been a gamble. Usually, it would be for a well-paying case, going as far as the opposite coast on his own dime--but not that time; even LA could suffocate you after long enough. Call it a midlife crisis, he was enjoying himself.
“ Yeah, sure, ” he laughed, eyes down on the camera hanging around his neck, hearing only the juvenile voice posing the very adult offer, “ I’d love one. ” Green tones flickered over to the girl, and the sight of a lighter sobered his expression. “ The fuck you have that for? ”
