@awesomeitsamy
Yeah I'm beating the fucking horse again, sorry.
Not to be a filthy liberal on main but "this thing makes me uncomfortable therefore it's morally wrong" is conservative logic. That's how people justify homophobia, transphobia, racism, whatever. And being queer or supportive of queer people does not magically make you immune to conservative logic. You are not owed comfort, things are going to make you uncomfortable and you have to be able to ask yourself "is this harming anyone?" And if the answer is no then you just go "ew, gross" and block wherever it's necessary and move on. And no, again, making you uncomfortable is not harming you.
Targeted harassment is harm, intentionally sending something to another person because you know it will upset them is harm, stumbling upon something you don't want to see is not harm, stop acting like you're the victim just because the entire internet won't bend to your will and stop posting things that make you feel icky.
The idea that non-police lynchings ever stopped in the US instead of whites just becoming craftier (evil) about it is so weird to me like
Sure they ainât picnicking at a public hanging anymore but you seen how many more missing posters thereâs been the past few years in particular right? How so many Black and Brown children are just fuckin disappearing too and never making anything more than a Facebook missing post?
We just only hear about them when someone cares about them enough to set fire to everything until it gets noticed.
Yes. Mainly by law enforcement or people working with them. We watch us disappear into human trafficking and mass graves and we can do literally nothing about it besides hope one of our loved ones wasnt one of them when we get news theyâve disappeared.
The law doesnât exist to protect Black people, it exists to kill us.
The issue became national news when families said they waited months for word about missing loved ones â only to learn their relative had be
âIf these so called âsundown townsâ still existââ
A database contributed by people across the nation underlies these maps and the tables you can generate.
The Greenbook was a travel guide for Black people; it still exists, there's even an app!
Green Book Global is the first Black travel review site. Black Travelers, write/read destination reviews, book trips AND earn cash
Hey! Are you looking at the map above and thinking "there's some places missing that I know about"? Then please ADD INFORMATION TO THE MAP. It is an ACTIVE map that you can contribute to!!! If you are a BIPOC person who travels, please make use of and contribute to Greenbook Global's city review information! These are not static, these are active maps that don't work if people don't contribute!
A highlight in the history of uninvited cats on stage has to be the premiere of Rossini's Barbiere di Siviglia:
... during the finale, a cat arrived, and mingled with the performers. [Figaro] chased it from one side, it returned from the other side to throw itself at the legs of [Bartolo]. ... the audience imitated its meows and encouraged it to continue its improvised role.

Why this got me boppin at my desk tho lol
i saw this video and had to draw her check out afrococoapuffs, sheâs amazing!
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

If you're a teenager, you can still use this resource.

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this
Here is a skill that many of us are going to need for survival: how to tell if someone is offering to let you lie.
The tip-off phrase is "If [circumstance] was true, then we/I could do [helpful thing.]" This is not a guarantee that the person is offering, but it should tell you "I am being informed of a way to improve things."
Your confirmation phrase is "What documentation would that require?" This is essentially asking them "if people come asking me to prove this, will I be able to? Or will they not come at all?"
The answer you are hoping for with the confirmation phrase is "Just tell me if it's true, and I'll put it on the form." Note that this is not a direct instruction to lie, because they can't tell you that.
If they didn't mean to extend an offer to lie or this is a situation where they can't, then they'll list off something like your paystubs or your birth certificate. Your response back in that case is "Thanks, I'll tell my friends who qualify." This clears you of any concerns that you may have been considering lying.
The more complex answer is when they answer by giving you a form on the spot. Your job, in this case, is to scan the form and see if what they are asking you can be meaningfully verified by an official source.
Things that can be verified by an official source include, but are not limited to, your age, legal sex, income, veteran status, and place of residence. It's not generally a good idea to lie about these on official documents.
Be smart, and be practical. Do what you need to in order to stay alive, and keep an ear out for the people offering to help you do so.
im having trouble understanding this in the abstract, could someone give an example of a hypothetical situation this would apply to?
"This medication is covered for FREE if you are quitting smoking. Are you working on quitting?"
*me, thinking about how I quit smoking in 2018 and it is now the year of our lord 2024* "Oh yeah, still working very hard. You know how those cravings can hit."
*please note, how I omitted the truth in the example. I didn't ANNOUNCE it been 6 years SINCE I ALREADY QUIT. I said that I was working hard because cravings are still a thing (6 years later not said out loud). The fact I haven't have a SINGLE one in 4 years [I was Weak during lockdown but could not finish a cig anymore] is irrelevant. The doctor asking me was *nudge nudge wink wink* pointing out that labeling my cig use as "not quite quit yet" would cut some costs on medications.
Sometimes the 'lies' you are being an opportunity to nod along for are just ommissions of truth. Like- still being an active smoker for easier access to other treatments or random pains being worse than YOU personally find them. "If X is true, Y could be an option for you" is a way to allow you to snip off details to make X TECHNICALLY true. They are asking you to be a VAGUE fuck- not a pedantic one. For BOTH of y'all's plausible deniability.
"So these symptoms prevent you from doing [X, Y, Z] activities?"
Even if YOU think you are mildly inconvenienced at best, 'OH YEAH- the generalized fatigue/nagging pain/light headed feeling just makes it so hard to [whatever activity you just find more choresome in those circumstances]!'
I have also had it happen at random coffee shops. Or vape shops.
"How much cash do you have on you? Conveniently this is on sale RIGHT NOW for you for 5 dollars less than that IF it happens to be your birthday. It's your birthday... RIGHT??????"
Is the exact same concept. "You have a coupon right?" "And you saw the BOGO deal and remembered to mention it, RIGHT? Cuz mentioning it before I complete the transaction will make these BOGO..."
You may ask, âwhy would someone ask me to lie?â
You all ever seen that scene in the Incredibles where Mr. incredible basically tells this little old lady to get her stuff approved? Itâs a cartoonish example of what happens all the time in real life.
You ever seen a cashier conveniently forget to ring up baby formula for a single mother, and then wish her a lovely day?
Sometimes, people look out for each other. Pay attention and let them. The world is spooky out there; weâre all in it together.
This is a good read and worth paying attention to. The human urge to help out other beings is strong, and people are prone to trying to indicate things like this to you.
This post gives some good steer on tasting if that's what is happening, a good read.
My partner needed my signature on a thing for the insurance company. I was out of the country. The nice lady looked at him and said "you should go check in the parking lot" and he explained that I was Out of the Country and she shook her head and said again (more patiently, and enunciating clearly) "you should CHECK in the PARKING LOT" and nodded at him, handing him the form and a pen.
He finally understood.
this is the number one reason i miss being a cashier. helping people and sticking it to the man at the same time, in tiny little ways every day. đ
Important addendum:
If somebody does this for you, and you are at any point in a position to give Feedback On Your Experience â no they didn't. Don't tell Yelp, don't tell the customer satisfaction survey, for the love of fuck don't tell their boss, even if you mean it as praise. "Employee was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional" end of review.
Don't accidentally narc on someone doing you a solid.
an interesting linguistics find! so I'm reading this text from 1908 and it keeps referencing "hp" in the context of "not being at full hp" "applying your full hp to a task" etc
and I'm like....... okay that is a perfectly normal way to describe energy and reads totally clear to me, but I KNOW you don't mean hit points/health points which is the first place my brain goes, so what are YOU using hp to mean
and it's not explained in-text, which means it was common enough to not warrant explanation to the 1908 audience, so gotta look elsewhere
horsepower. turns out it's horsepower.
and I'm absolutely FASCINATED that a commonly used initialism from 1908 now stands for something different AND YET the contextual meaning is still the same to a 21st-century reader
I could hand this guy my nintendo switch and he'd be like, ah yes I understand, this ''''pokemon'''' loses horsepower throughout the fight
language is amazing
If you get into white work embroidery, you might discover cutwork. And when you start doing cutwork, you might get curious about incorporating detached elements. And before you know it the fabric is gone, you are making needle lace, and there goes the rest of your week.
Buttonhole stitch - not even once.
someone at work told me 'oh, just ask chat' when i raised a casual question and i asked what she meant and she said 'you know, chatgpt' like im an idiot. and i should get an award for the fact that i did not start snarling and biting and killing
i know everyones justifiably mad right now but do you wanna get madder? i work at a school. a teacher said this to me.
im glad this version of the post is making rounds now. the amount of casual ai use i see some teachers do these days is disgusting and they genuinly dont see the problem with making school assignments for children using chatgbt, and even encourage them to use it themselves. school is about teaching kids how to think and they're taking that away from them. this is a sickness and we should be calling it out more so people realize the damage they're doing
i subbed a 7th grade class a few months ago and i gave them a written assignment and they had to use their textbook to find answers and weren't allowed to copy the text, they had to rewrite the answers in their own words. a simple thing i was taught as a kid. i banned the use of ipads and phones for the duration of the class.
50% of the kids couldn't find the many of the answers, even though they only had one chapter to read. the other 45% didnt know how to rewrite the answers in their own words. only 5% finished the assignment properly. they asked me repeatedly if they could ask chatgbt. almost all of their handwriting was on 1-4th grade levels. i struggled to read most of it.
this isnt their fault. the school system is failing them. the adults are failing them. 'we're evolving with the times' we are losing our ability to think for ourselves, and its all thanks to the system being set up. we should all be angry. why aren't we more angry
People often say to me: âYou draw like some kind of inhuman machine. If I eat your brain, will I gain your power?â The answer is yes, but there is another way. The key to precise drawing is building up muscle memory so that your arm/hand/fingers do the things you want them to do when you want them to do them. Teaching yourself to draw a straight line or to make sweet curves is just a matter of practice and there are some exercises you can do to help improve. If youâre going to be doodling in class or during meetings anyway, why not put that time to good use?
nart and all the alt baddies hes pulled by having absolutely no swag whatsoever
why did you have to love me so much? why did you have to care so much that it would bring me back?
no because i was originally introduced to naruto through fanfiction not the source material so imagine the depths of my dismay when i finally got around to it only to see how underdeveloped and underutilized sakura was compared to the fics I'd been so eagerly gobbling up. look how they massacred my boy. had me sitting there on the edge of my seat each of her fights like you can do better than this! you have the potential to do better than this! clutching my head in abject sorrow when she actually got together with sasuke. like girl get up off the FLOOR I'm going to cry. you will always be real to me fanon sakura
i know this applies to a lot of stuff but damn naruto would be so good if it was good. like it could have been so good the potential was insane. thereâs so much that could have been done in a setting where every country is essentially ruled by a military dictatorship but instead we got more misogyny than you can even imagine
