Meet Mango.

Seriously, I’m curious how do you guys handle depression when it gets in the way of dog ownership? (Or any pet ownership that requires interest and effort and general happiness?) do u just force yourself to stick it through even though you really dont want to do anything? Or do your dogs just get put off to the sidelines while you’re struggling through this time, assuming it’s the kind that comes on and off, not constant?
For a while, before I got on meds, my tegu was the only reason I got out of bed in the morning. Not because I actually wanted to work with her but because she’d clang the lights in her cage together and it was a.) annoying as f and b.) a serious fire hazard. But I was in total maintenance mode with all the animals- feeding and cleaning and that was it. I can’t imagine what it’s like with dogs- they’re so much needier than reptiles. Good luck, buddy.
After my final rat passed away, I got a couple of sugar gliders. A bit after, my depression hit, and it hit hard. I’ve struggled with it my entire life but that period was probably the worst for me, without getting into too much detail. I didn’t have it in me to get out of bed much on most days. Sugar gliders need a lot of attention. After a while with no improvements I decided they deserved better, and I gave them back to the women I got them from (total glider people, they’re awesome).
I didn’t have any more pets until I got my first snake, Glowbug. It was several years later, and I was very nervous about getting another pet, even though I was doing quite a bit better (still had my days). I decided on a snake because they don’t really need anything except water, food, and for you to clean em. Glowbug brought me such happiness though, and I ended up getting more snakes. I put Glowbug’s cage right by my bed so I’d see him first thing in the morning because I loved him so much and he made me smile every time I even looked at him.
As time progressed, I got more snakes, and got some that were harder and harder to care for (’course nothing meticulous, but things I wasn’t used to - the rainbow boa was the first ‘harder’ one). The last ‘challenge’ I got was my emerald tree boa because I mist her daily. I’ve had her for a while now and have done well. She’s truly a symbol of how far I’ve come, honestly. Looking at her makes me feel proud, you know?
I just recently decided I’m ready for another dog again. Been doing all kinds of research to make sure I’ll be a better dog owner than before (I was a kid!).
So I guess for me, I rehomed my gliders. I know a dog is much different though. I can only encourage you to do what feels best for you. People anthropomorphize on dogs a bit too much, but as long as they end up in a safe environment where they’re fed, they won’t be too sad. Maybe at first but they do get over it. They’re animals. If you aren’t sure, maybe look at a foster situation until you’re doing a little bit better. If you can, maybe leave your pup with a friend for a couple days and see how you feel, if you’re worried youll miss them too much.
I will say too, that a lot of it depends on your dog. If you have a senior dog, it won’t be as big of a deal so long as its needs are met, but if you have a young or high energy dog, you may need to look at other options. When it comes to high energy dogs, if they aren’t properly exercised and mentally stimulated, they can often turn destructive and then you have a bigger issue.
I GOT MORE LEGS. The red one (pictured last) is so chill!! The rest are flighty but that one’s calm. I can’t wait to see how they turn out.
I got them because a friend of mine was trading one of his snakes for a turtle and the cresties were supposed to make up the difference... he didn’t really want them though, and since I already had pangea on hand from the gargoyle I decided to take em in.

hey kids make sure you reblog this picture with the source! saw it (and accidentally rb it) without it!
I wanted to post a picture I took a few days ago of Tycho. This was moments after a shed (I think, considering the shed was still soggy).
Sweetie pie!

What lovely critters!! Thank you for sharing them with us!!
You're very welcome! 💕
Would you recommend a carpet python or brazilian rainbow boa when it comes to temperment and care? I love both but really have a hard time choosing
I really love both, I guess it depends on your experience level! BRBs have a bad rep for being hard to care for, but they really aren't. Keep em in a tub and you're good. Babies are known to be nippy, however mine has never been anything but a doll. He likes to just kinda sit with you.Carpet pythons are very hard to neglect haha! I'm convinced they'd shed fine in a cardboard box (ps please don't put them in a cardboard box). A lot of carpets are a little iffy when it comes to getting them out of the cage, but once out they're phenomenal. Just make sure you ask your breeder. So, ease care goes to the carpet python, and temperament typically would go to the BRB but it can definitely be a toss up. Both are incredibly rewarding though! Good luck with whatever you choose. :3
where would you recommend someone to buy a jungle carpet python? are there any online breeders you'd recommend?
A good place to look is in jungle carpet Facebook groups. I got Glowbug from a guy named Troy Meyers and he's been nothing but phenomenal. Nick Mutton is like, THE guy! Check out inland reptile. He's got a website that's super easy to use.
