Caelus, after joining the Astral Express, always feels like something is missing. He looks back and expects to see someone there. He kills a monster and expects to hear someone say, "Good job." He stands alone in his room and expects someone to come up from behind and hug him.
He dreams of a field of lilies, expecting a man to stand in the middle. The sky weeps as Caelus stands alone in the sea of red, and he does not know for why the tears fall.
Is it the longing for what will no longer happen? Or is it from the pain for yearning what can never be?

He chases after the crimson trail, oblivious to the blood lilies blooming with each step. He continues to follow the blood as his heart beats loudly in his chest.
Caelus comes to a stop at where the trail ends, but the one he expects waiting at the end is nowhere to be found. His breaths come short, the name at the tip of his tongue, but he cannot remember who it is he is meant to call. The blood lilies sway with the nonexistent wind, their petals lightly brushing his pants. Yet, it is not their touch he yearns but for the familiar stranger he cannot remember.
In the sea of red, where the path of blood starts from nowhere and ends with nothing, Caelus expects to see a flash of white. But there is no one, and he wonders, if perhaps it has always been that way.
Caelus, trying to find excuses to visit Dan Heng in his room, so he goes there to pull in his gacha games. So every time Dan Heng asks, "What are you doing in the Archive if you're not here to check the Archive?"
And Caelus will say, "Good gacha luck."
Dan Heng: Okay, but why are you in my bed snuggling with me? Caelus: ... Caelus: Good gacha luck. (Dan Heng also wants Caelus to hang out with him more so he doesn't stop Caelus.)
One day, Caelus enters Dan Heng's room to pull and lo and behold, Dan Heng is playing the same gacha game.
Soft music drifted through the Dreamjolt Hostelry and Caelus hummed along with it as he polished the wine glass in his hand. He pulled the cloth away, admiring his reflection upon the pristine glass surface, before setting the glass down with the rest. He picked up another one, and began to polish it. The music changed and Caelus hummed along with it, never once breaking from his task.
Another glass polished, and another in his hand, the repetitive motions allowed Caelus to relax, something he sorely needed after everything. He always knew the life of a Trailblazer would be filled with non-stop chaos and adventure, and he loved that lifestyle, but a day just simply doing nothing but making drinks and cleaning wine glasses was something he badly needed.
“Hello there, Mr. Stellaron.”
Caelus looked up from the wine glass he was cleaning, and smiled at the sight of Aventurine sliding into the bar stool in front of him.
“Hey Aventurine! Here for a drink?”
“Why don’t you take a guess?” he asked, leaning on the bar counter and smirking.
The music continued to play in the background despite the silence between the two. Caelus set the polished wine glass down in front of Aventurine, and discarded the cloth to the side. He turned around, grabbing the drink mixer and reached out to bring down a few bottles of drinks. Aventurine watched, his usual charismatic smile unwavering.
Ice clinked in the glass as it knocked at its surface. The water poured in fizzled as bubbles rose to the surface, the sound only aided by the additional flow of flavouring that joined it. A sliced lemon joined the rim, a perfect circle only achieved in dreams. The drink slid towards Aventurine, a silent invitation that the man accepted.
He drank in silence while Caelus returned to his self-appointed task of polishing the rest of the wine glasses, all while the music continued to play in the background. The Trailblazer continued humming as he finished cleaning another wine glass, setting it down with all the rest. The sound of glass hitting wood, and ice clinking in its confines, drew his attention back to his only customer.
Accepting the empty glass back to be washed, he looked up shyly at the Gambler, and he asked, “Did you enjoy your drink?”
Aventurine hummed, and he leaned forward, gesturing for Caelus to lean in — a silent invitation for spilled secrets. The Trailblazer obeyed, accepting it as he leaned in with his ear towards him. “It lacks your taste,” Aventurine whispered, before kissing Caelus on the cheek.
Caelus pulled back in shock and surprise, before blushing red when he realised what Aventurine did. “You-!”
Aventurine paid no heed to him, only licking his lips as though he could chase after the aftertaste. “Will you not grant me one more, Caelus?”
Caelus glared at him, but did set down a new wine glass in front of him. He could feel Aventurine watching him as he made the drink, the gaze unwavering. He lifted the glass up, hesitating before he brought the glass to his lips and kissing the cold polished side and setting it down in front of the surprised Gambler.
“Daring today, aren’t you?” he said once he composed himself.
“You said it lacked my taste.”
Aventurine hummed and drank from the side Caelus kissed on. “Because it tastes much better with it,” he said, setting the empty glass down.
“Don’t lie.”
“Want to make a bet?”
“Shut up.”
Aventurine laughed and Caelus could feel his cheeks heating up again. “Join me, I could use the company.”
Caelus sighed. “I’m still on the clock. There’s a few more hours to go.”
“There’s no other customers but me.”
“Aventurine…”
“Fine. It’s only a few more hours, I can wait.”
Aventurine turned around, and leaned back against the bar counter as Caelus returned to cleaning up. The music continued to play softly in the background, a piano piece now to complement the tranquillity in the Dreamjolt Hostelry. Only a few hours of waiting… and it still seemed far too long. The Gambler closed his eyes to the sound of Caelus humming along with the music, unaware of the latter leaving his post to approach him. It was only when he felt a familiar taste on his lips, that he opened his eyes to Caelus pulling back.
“A few more hours,” Caelus promised and Aventurine licked his lips, as though he could chase the aftertaste of his lover’s kiss.
“I’ll be waiting.”
The bells tolled in the dreamscape, marking the time that never arrived. The sound went unheard by the vast crowd, ignorant of its cries, and by the passengers within the Astral Express watching the planet slowly turn smaller. The golden glow of the lights of Penacony was bright, a feature of the land of dreams, but now the glow had almost faded away, slowly consumed by the vast empty space beyond its borders.
“Admiring the view?” someone asked behind him and Sunday scoffed.
“Hardly,” Sunday said, not turning around. He heard Caelus hum, and he watched the Trailblazer through his reflection, tilting his head in curiosity.
“Was it not home for you?”
A land of dreams and the only place there where he called home was nothing but a nightmare where chains of duty and protection bound him to his cage. The door could lay open, taunting him to fly away like how his sister did, but his crippled wings could never take him to the sky. Even if he could fly away free, he could never leave and let his sister take his place.
“A cold cage like that could never be a home.”
Penacony was gone from his view and he did not miss it. The Astral Express kept moving, onwards to its next destination, towards the sea of stars where the unknown awaited them.
Sunday felt Caelus lean his head on his shoulder, heated breath too hot on his neck, but the Holovian remained unflinching. Hands wrapped around him, their skin only separated by clothes between them. Yet, Sunday remained steadfast. “What is a home then?” Caelus asked, his voice muffled but Sunday heard him.
What is a home? Sunday thought over the question in his head. “A home…” he said, and he felt Caelus perked up, “is a place where you are safe. It is a place where your family will welcome you back. It is a place where you can be at ease. It is a place where you are loved.”
“Like the Astral Express? Himeko and Mr. Yang are like my parents. I feel safe and relaxed here. And… you’re here.”
“So it would seem.”
“Is this a home for you then?”
Was it? His sister remained still at Penacony, and he was never to return. He was not safe, and he would never be for as long as the crimes he committed remained etched in history. At the same time…
“Yes, because the one I love is here.”
Sunday felt a gentle kiss on his cheek, and his resolute will crumbled. He turned around, breaking free from the warmth and comfort, and reached out to the saviour who broke his chains. His mouth met the lips of his lover, and he leaned into the action, letting his own hands rest upon the waist of the other. They broke away, a moment too soon, and Sunday longed for more.
Greed, yet another to add to the never-ending list of sins.
Caelus was breathing hard, each breath a reflection of the heartbeat Sunday felt beneath his touch.
“Another,” the Trailblazer ordered — demanded, and how was Sunday to resist such temptation when he had already struck a deal with the devil?
Caelus is so competitive that Dan Heng has to say "this is not a competition" every time someone gives Caelus a time-sensitive task. Heck, it doesn't have to be time-sensitive. Even meals with the Astral Express.
"Chew your food Caelus, this is not a competition."
And if it really is a competition, Dan Heng would kiss Caelus just so his boyfriend would stop gloating about winning or being a sore loser. Like Caelus would go on a very long speech about having won or lost and Dan Heng would just kiss him to shut him up.
But really, he wants any excuse to kiss Caelus. Kissing him because he won or kissing him to cheer him up after he loses. Any excuse at all.

Here's the finished fic for this idea: https://archiveofourown.org/works/53587945
I really like the concept of Caelus being an Emanator. I might revisit the idea again, maybe as an Emanator of a different Aeon.
Penacony HYPE! ✨
(I'm sure nothing bad will happen...)
Caelus, an Emanator of Nanook, sat in an empty wasteland, just outside the boundaries of where Nanook resided. He waited alone for countless days, waiting until the Astral Express showed up. It was not his mirror copy that he first lay his eyes on, not the dimension hopper, not the navigator, not Fuli's chosen, no, he set his sight first on the one he had fallen in love with so long ago.
"Dan Heng," he greeted as he stood up, ignoring the way the Astral Express members immediately drew their weapons out and pointed them at him. "It's been a while."
"Caelus," Dan Heng greeted back, yet his spear remained pointed at the Emanator. "It has."
Caelus raised his hands in mock surrender. "I'm not here to fight. I just want to talk. Shall we go somewhere a little more private, Dan Heng?"
"Talk!? You must be insane if we're letting you talk to Dan Heng alone!" March shouted and Stelle nodded her head in agreement.
Yet, Dan Heng stepped forward, his spear lowered and dispersing into particles when he stowed it away. "Okay," he said, much to the shock of March and Stelle.
Before anyone else could protest, Welt Yang placed his hand on Dan Heng's shoulder, drawing the latter's attention. "Are you sure?" he asked and Dan Heng nodded his head. "Then go. We will wait until you return."
"Thank you, Mr. Yang."
Caelus led Dan Heng to an outcrop nearby, far enough that they would not be heard but close enough that the Astral Express crew could keep an eye on both of them.
"Caelus, what do you want to talk about?" Dan Heng asked and Caelus let out a huff of amusement.
"Straight to the point huh? I guess, I just want to say, thanks. I'm glad that I was able to meet you. I'm glad that we were able to talk, hang out, and well, I really enjoyed your company back then. And well... I'm glad I fell in love with you, even if it didn't work out in the end."
"Caelus..."
"So yeah... good luck fighting the big boss. He's pretty tough but hey, he's an Aeon so no surprises there. I won't stop you and everyone else. So go for it, there's no one left standing in your way anymore."
"Caelus... This... This isn't goodbye right?"
Caelus smiled. "Dan Heng, you already know the answer to that question."
Dan Heng lowered his head, unable to watch the sadness on Caelus' face.
"Why me?" he asked and Caelus laughed.
"Because you're special."
Was that all it was to it? Because he was special?
"Hey Dan Heng," Caelus said and Dan Heng raised his head at the sound of his name. "Do you think that we could have been friends in a different life?"
"No," Dan Heng said without hesitation and his hands reached out to cup Caelus by the cheeks, stopping him from turning away and forcing the Emanator to meet his gaze. "We would have been lovers still. No matter the life we lead or the worlds we live in, we would have found each other and fallen in love in every single one."
Caelus teared up and Dan Heng pulled the man into a hug. He ignored the sobs and the wet stain on his clothes. He closed his eyes and pretended that there was no one else but him and Caelus in this wasteland, pretending that there was no impending doom looming over them.
"Will I see you again?" Dan Heng asked and Caelus choked on his tears.
"...You already know the answer to that question, Dan Heng."
January ko-fi fic!
For the xiaother big bang I wrote a fic called A tu Lado (By Your side), and I had two scenes I had to cut:
Scene #1 is a scene I had to rewrite because the tone wasn't right for that part of the story. You can read it for free HERE.
Warnings for gore, temporal death.
Small snippet:
He could have saved him, he couldn’t help but think as the blood cooled around them. It would have been so easy to pluck him from the air and into the safety of his arms if only he’d been there to save him. But he had been too late.
Scene #2 is the second one that expanded on some of the Twins' lore but would have made this story exorbitantly longer. And it is January's reward for any and all ko-fi supporters! You can find it HERE
It features lore, Venti, and Lumine!
Small snippet:
Barbatos laughed, and it was painful to hear. “We fought for you, and this is the thanks I get.” Aether did not yet understand, but he still lowered his eyes, chastised by the girl in the mirror. “I fell asleep.” Venti said, in a softer voice. “A slumber of five hundred years. And my dearest friend, the one who fought with me, for me, suffered for that long. Will you cast your judgment on me?” “I’m sorry.” Venti made a dismissive gesture as he sat down beside him, cradling him with his wings, like Lumine had done, so long ago.
