Went to see the new Thunderbolts movie.
I didn’t expect much for many reasons. Only a few of the characters were even in the comic book version in its many forms and teams, and pretty much none of them were in the original form of the team. Also the Sentry…
The Sentry is a heavy character. Introduced in 2000 he was retroactively written into the entirety of marvel comics history, even having showed him attending the wedding of his good friends Reed Richard’s and Susan Storm… playing on the fact that his “arch-nemesis” the Void erased the memory of his existence from the entire world, including he himself until it all slowly came back to him.
His initial appearance was basically of a fat homeless looking drug addict/alcoholic with a dirty blanket for a cape doing weird shit like suddenly appearing floating in the air next to Spider-man as he sits perched on top of a high-rise saying to him, “Hello Peter.”.
Turns out later on that he actually has the power to literally warp reality while also having multiple personality disorder. He is the Void, the powers and what he represents as the Sentry were of his own creation as well as the Void. Super scary and powerful character written during a time when dark things sold better. At one point he flew down and tore the head off of Morgan le Fay and ended a battle before it even began in a heroic act as one of the Dark Avengers when Norman Osborn ran the group (yeah, like I said dark things were selling.), later on he literally ripped the god Ares in half with his bare hands…
So I was extremely worried about them making such a character in cinematic form. As I should be.
Overall, they did their thing with the 2 hours and 6 minutes they were allotted though. It is a particularly moving film if you have any experience with any type of anxiety, panic attacks, or depression. In fact, the entire cast of characters are not only morally bankrupt but also very obviously sad, depressed, and fucked up in so many ways. Even Bucky who has nothing shown of his past here (smartly because we are sick of seeing things recycled, there’s only so many times you can watch Unlce Ben die…) has his sadness summed up in one line and one scene simply by him ironically saying something like “yeah, because I’ve had such a great life” when asked about what he experienced prior to the scene.
The cast described it as “an A24 movie meets the MCU”, and I can see that. The entire movie is akin to a group drug or alcohol therapy session where at the end of the share they all realize “ I’m not alone, I have this group that have been there and understand…”
To be honest, I felt it, I feel it.
Go see it, make your own decision. I liked it, it was way out of Marvel’s normal wheelhouse while still remaining in the falling apart world known as the “MCU”.
