Meanwhile, Ice King and Magic Betty were never interrupted, and they continued watching birds that afternoon, even going to a Disco later that evening.... Magic Betty is still determined, and has found herself starting to get along with the Ice King more than she thought she would....)
It was a pleasant evening. Marceline the Vampire Queen was up in the sky, trying to sketch out something new.
She had the melody, but… the words just weren’t right!!!
“Wow, you’re such a Rock Star!!!”
Marceline had been so used to doing this, for so long. Hundreds upon hundreds of years. Ultimate privacy, up here in The Air.
It was Betty. She had flown her purple magic carpet, all the way up.
“You know…. If I had found you, I would have kept you, too,” the wizard piped up, not sure if Marceline had seen her, yet.
The moon shone bright on her glasses, obscuring her Magic Eyes.
If she had any words, they slipped right out. How could anyone want this mess?!!
“Oh, don’t roll your eyes at me,” Betty implored, crossing her arms, “I came all the way up here to talk to you, you know!”
“It’s not….” Marceline sighed. “I’m sorry, I’m just not used to people being up here.”
“Uhuh.”
“Except for Finn, I think, a few weeks ago.”
“Uhuh.”
“What do you want to talk to me about, anyways?”
“I dunno,” Betty shrugged, “do I need a reason?”
Marceline blinked.
“You’re so cool….!!!”
She couldn’t help but laugh.
Simon had said the same exact thing to her.
Over 900 years ago.
She had found him, as the Ice King, watching one of her shows. She remembered how silly he looked, in his trench-coat and cap in the back, as if he didn’t want to be seen. She had thought it was adorable at the time, but remembering it, now….
He was so insecure….
She looked at Betty, a few feet below hers, hiding under the wide brim of her yellow Martian Magic Hat.
So is she.
The maddening wizard looked up at her. Criss-cross-applesauce, waiting for the next song.
She just wanted to listen, didn’t she….?
She wants to listen, to me, Marceline realized. Why is this making me nervous???
Marceline had seen her face so many times. Over the decades, over the hundreds of years.
Various photos. The books she and Simon wrote together, and the manuscripts stashed away of the sillier stuff they could never publish back then (that also ended up coming to pass as truth, as did most of the weird findings they researched.)
One of her favorites was a study they had done on the ability for domesticated cats to organize and create their own societies, which included dozens and dozens of photographs of the two with various research subjects. A photo of Betty holding up a giant Maine Coon cat, almost as long as she was tall.
Those two really loved cats.
And then, it hit her.
So much time, so many stories, so much…..
And this, right here. This was the Real Betty.
In the flesh.
And starting to unravel.
Marceline realized why she had been so nervous.
She wanted to make a good impression.
Is this how Simon feels? Deep down, in the Ice King, somewhere?
Is he scared of what he’s become?
Am I scared of what I’ve become?
“We’re all scared of that,” Betty reminded her, “you know, you are singing your inner monologue right now, right?”
Crap!
But…
“You really think I’m a… Rock Star?”
“The coolest one I’ve ever met!”
It seemed like she had already made an impression, after all.
Marceline smirked. It was time to prove it.
While she still had time.
Before the Loomy Gloom fully saturated.
Before Betty was all the way gone, too.
