Never Get Over Me
summary: It was supposed to stay simple. Whenever Anissa needed a re-up, she called Jimmy. Somewhere between late-night smoke sessions, lingering looks, and crossing a line neither of them bothered to uncross, he became a whole lot more than just her weed man. No titles. No expectations. No feelings... or at least, that's what they tell each other. Jimmy keeps a strict program when it comes to Anissa. Nonchalant, possessive when he feels like it, and toxic enough to swear he doesn't care while making damn sure nobody gets too comfortable around what's "his." Anissa knows better than to expect anything more. She's too busy taking care of everybody else and hiding her own battles behind an *I'm good* anyway. They aren't together. They don't belong to each other. So why does it feel like neither one of them knows how to let the other go?

Affection Study #5: Charm
Author's note: Jey's mad, but he's not immune to charm. 😌
"What did I tell you? Huh? You never listen to me and that's why we're into it right now!"
Jey's yelling, and while you'd think that would rattle her. It doesn't. He's not actually gonna do anything besides what he's doing now. Which is pacing back and forth, clapping, and raving about what she did to set him off.
"I said don't walk around backstage like that! Got your body showing for all the guys to stare at. LA's eyes almost fell out his damn head the way he was glued to yo ass!"
She's worrying her bottom lip with her teeth, trying her best not to giggle at his possessiveness. It's not funny, but it is funny. Because she knows she sort of...did it on purpose. Sue her, it's hot to watch Jey get pissed off. Alright? A little excitement never hurt anybody. Keeps his heart rate up.
"I'm sorry, baby. But it's the middle of summer. What'd you want me to do? Get heatstroke trying to be modest?" She tilts her head, batting her big Bambi eyes at him.
Jey sighs, running his hand over his hair and beard. She knows he's weak to the eyes. But no, he can't budge. He won't fall for it this time. "No, you know what? Not good enough. There are ways to stay cool without having your ass and tits out. Don't do it again, Baby. I'm not playing."
She hops down from the travel crate she's sitting on, wrapping her arms around his waist and poking out her bottom lip. "I'm sorry, Daddy. Forgive me..." She stands on her toes, kissing Jey on the lips. Just a little peck.
He resists the urge to melt, holding her by the chin and playfully gritting his words out. "Yeah right...You do it again and see what happens, girl. Ain't nobody playing with you." They both know he won't do anything. Just all talk.
"Mmhm...Whatever you say, Big Daddy." She gives him another kiss, internally cackling at how whipped he is. And you know what? He lets out a laugh too, lifting her into wrapping her legs around his waist.
"All that 'yes Daddy' talk. You know what comes next, right? Gonna have to give you something later to make up for spiking my blood pressure like that." He winks, nipping at her neck while she laughs.
Yeah yeah, she'll make it up to him later.

novacane ⟢ ep4
Atlanta, Georgia - 11:30AM Ciara’s apartment complex.
Ciara had just woken up from her slumber after having a rough night last night, her thighs aching from her self-harming herself yesterday night and her eyes all puffy making her whole entire face feel puffy after crying herself to sleep.
She just laid there on her side in the bed grabbing her phone unlocking it with her Face ID like usual seeing messages from Jasmine and Jimmy, of course he would text her first in the morning.
3+ messages from Jasmine 🐈
2+ messages from IG
Jasmine🐈: bitch I am so sorry about last night I was tore up Jasmine 🐈: Jimmy’s brother took me home Jasmine 🐈: did something happen?
She bit the bottom of her lips not wanting to remember what happened last night as she wanted to keep it to herself.
She texted her back.
Ci📸: no nothing didn’t happen last night I made it home last night and went to bed
Jasmine🐈: you sure? I feel like your lying to me Ci
Lie
Lie
Lie
Ciara didn’t like to lie to her best friend even when it’s personal and something she’s been dealing with since being with Leon.
“You have to lie Ci, you have to lie.” Ciara said to herself.
Ci📸: yeah I’m good Jasmine just tired that’s all.
She hasn't even acknowledged Jimmy’s IG messages yet, only texting Jasmine so she switched over from iMessage to Instagram to see what he had to say.
jonathanfatu: good morning mama I hope you slept good
jonathanfatu: imma come see you after work tonight aight?
Of course he was coming to see her but she agreed for him to see her tonight just to get it over with without him begging.
Her phone buzzed seeing another message from Jasmine.
Jasmine🐈: alright I won’t push it for now, but I have a horrible hangover girl 😭😭
That made her chuckle, texting her back.
Ci📸: this is why you don’t drink that much 😭😭
Jasmine🐈: I mean I was having a good time tho you cannot judge me on that
Ci📸: well duh girl
Jasmine🐈: whatever girl but are you heading into work tonight?
Was she even in the mood to go into work tonight?
Ci📸: yeah I need a distraction
Jasmine🐈: distraction? From what? Now I have a feeling something did happen at mama fatu’s house
Fuck
Ci📸: …. Ci📸: yeah something did happen at his mama house last night….
She knew that Jasmine was gonna flip her shit when she hears what happened last night. But she couldn’t bring herself to tell her all the details.
Jasmine🐈: Ci…what happened?
Ciara bit the bottom of her lip typing her thumbs.
But then she stopped and then started again.
Ci📸: his girlfriend literally was being a total bitch when I left last night all of that fake niceness she was doing was so fake
Jasmine🐈: Girl what?? Oh hell no what did she say?
Ciara didn’t even want to think about what Nia had said to her last night.
Ci📸: saying that I need to stay away from Jimmy and saying that he wouldn’t go for a girl like me bc of what I do
Jasmine🐈: oh helll no bitch, I’m finna find those hoe and fuck her up
Ci📸: don’t she’s not worth it…and Jimmy’s been blowing up my phone ever since and wants to come see at work.
Jasmine🐈: what you say?
Ci📸: I told him yes
Jasmine🐈: Ci…
She sighed deeply.
Jasmine🐈: you suppose to say no
Ci📸: ikik but I just want to see what he says that’s all
Jasmine🐈: just to talk right?
Hopefully right?
Ci📸: hopefully….
She switched over to Instagram without opening Jimmy’s messages right away. When she finally did, the first one made her stomach flutter and tighten at the same time.
jonathanfatu: good morning mama I hope you slept good jonathanfatu: imma come see you after work tonight aight?
She had already agreed last night. There was no point in trying to cancel. She knew he would only push harder if she tried.
She locked her phone and finally forced herself out of bed. Every step made the burn on her thighs flare up. She limped into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and stood under the hot water longer than usual, letting it wash over the fresh marks. The heat stung, but it also helped clear her head a little.
Afterward she threw on an oversized T-shirt and soft shorts, careful not to let the fabric rub too hard against her skin. She made herself a simple bowl of oatmeal and sat at the small kitchen table, staring at nothing while she ate.
Her mind kept replaying Nia’s words from last night.
He wouldn’t go for someone like you. She hated how easily those words settled into the same place Leon’s used to live.
Around 1:00 PM her phone buzzed again.
jonathanfatu: you up yet mama?
Ciara hesitated, then replied.
badgyalci: yeah I’m up just moving slow this morning
jonathanfatu: you still good with me coming through later?
She stared at the message for a long time. Part of her wanted to say no. The smarter part of her knew she should. But another part — the lonely, tired part that still remembered how gently he had looked at her during the private dance — didn’t want to cancel.
badgyalci: yeah that’s cool what time you thinking?
jonathanfatu: around 7:30/8 I’ll text you when I’m leaving the shop
badgyalci: alright
She set the phone down and leaned her head into her hands.
Tonight Jimmy was coming over.
And she had no idea how she was supposed to act normal when her body still ached and her heart still felt bruised from last night.
ೀ
The barbershop was already loud by early afternoon. Music bumped, clippers buzzed, and the usual shit-talking filled the air. Jimmy stood behind his chair, focused on a clean fade, but his mind kept drifting back to last night.
The look on Ciara’s face when she walked out of his mama’s house. The way she ignored his texts at first. The way she finally replied saying she was “okay” when she clearly wasn’t.
Jey noticed his twin was quieter than usual.
“You still thinking about last night?” Jey asked, wiping down his station between clients.
Jimmy didn’t look up. “Nia crossed a line. Straight up. Talking to Ciara like that at mama’s house? That was foul.”
Jacob leaned over from the next chair. “What exactly she say to her?”
Jimmy’s jaw tightened. “Told her I wouldn’t go for ‘someone like her.’ Called her out for being a dancer right there in front of everybody. Ciara left right after. She looked like she was about to break.”
Solo shook his head. “Damn. Nia wild for that.”
Jey raised an eyebrow. “And you still going to see her tonight?”
Jimmy finally glanced at his brother. “Yeah. I told her I was coming through after work.”
Jey whistled low. “You playing a dangerous game, Uce. Nia already knows you was at the club. Now you going to her house?”
“I’m just checking on her,” Jimmy said, but even he didn’t fully believe how casual that sounded. “After the way Nia talked to her, I feel like I owe her that much.”
Before anyone could respond, Jimmy’s phone started buzzing on the counter. Nia’s name lit up the screen.
He let it ring once… twice… then answered, stepping toward the back of the shop for a little privacy.
“Yeah?”
Nia’s voice came through sharp. “Where are you?”
“At the shop. Where else would I be?”
“You’ve been real quiet all morning. You still mad about last night?”
Jimmy leaned against the wall, running a hand over his face. “You already know the answer to that. What you said to her was unnecessary.”
Nia scoffed. “Unnecessary? She’s a stripper, Jonathan. You had her at your mama’s house like she’s just some regular friend. I had every right to check her.”
“You didn’t have the right to talk to her like she was nothing,” Jimmy shot back, voice low but firm. “You don’t know what she’s been through. You don’t know her at all.”
“And you do?” Nia snapped. “After one night at the club and one private dance? Please. You’re defending this girl more than you’re defending your own relationship right now.”
Jimmy stayed quiet for a second, staring at the floor.
“I gotta get back to work,” he finally said.
“Jonathan—”
He hung up before she could finish.
When he walked back to his station, the guys were watching him.
Jey spoke first. “Everything good?”
Jimmy picked up his clippers again. “Nia still on that same shit. Trying to make it seem like I’m the one in the wrong for checking on somebody she disrespected.”
Solo shook his head. “Bro… be careful. You already got one foot out the door and you don’t even realize it yet.”
Jimmy didn’t respond. He just went back to cutting hair, but the tension sat heavy in his chest the rest of the afternoon.
Every time his phone lit up with a text from Nia, he left it on read a little longer than usual.
And every time he thought about Ciara’s soft “yeah… that’s fine” when he asked if he could come over, something in him settled.
By the time 6:30 rolled around and the last client walked out, Jimmy was already cleaning his station faster than usual.
Jey watched him with a knowing look. “You really about to go over there, huh?”
Jimmy grabbed his keys. “Yeah.”
“You sure about this?”
Jimmy paused at the door for a second, then nodded once.
“I’m sure.”
He walked out of the shop without looking back.
Jimmy locked up the barbershop a little after 7:00. The sun was already starting to dip, painting the sky orange and pink. He sat in his car for a minute with the engine running, phone in his hand.
Nia had texted him three more times since their phone call.
3+ messages from Nia😘
Nia😘: You’re really still mad? Nia😘: Answer me Jonathan Nia😘: Don’t do nothing stupid
He left them all on read.
His thumb hovered over Ciara’s Instagram thread. He had told her he was coming to her place… but something in him shifted. Maybe it was the argument with Nia. Maybe it was the way Ciara had sounded so tired and distant in her messages. Or maybe he just needed to see her in the place where they first met.
He started the car and pulled out of the parking lot, but instead of typing her address into the GPS, he headed toward Eclipse.
The drive felt longer than usual. Music played low. His mind kept flipping between Nia’s voice on the phone and Ciara’s soft “yeah… that’s fine” from earlier.
By the time he pulled into the club parking lot, the neon sign was already glowing purple and black against the darkening sky. He parked, sat there for a second with his hands on the steering wheel, then got out.
Inside, the club was starting to pick up for the night. The bass was already thumping. A few regulars were at the bar. Girls were on stage and in the private rooms.
Jimmy walked in like he belonged there, scanning the room without even realizing how hard he was looking for one specific face.
The house mom, Shay, spotted him and walked over with a raised eyebrow.
“Back already?” she asked. “You looking for Nova?”
Jimmy nodded once. “She working tonight?”
Shay shook her head. “Not tonight. She called out. Said she wasn’t feeling well.”
Something tight settled in Jimmy’s chest.
“She good?” he asked.
“I don’t know. She sounded off on the phone. Quiet. Didn’t say much.”
Jimmy ran a hand over his face. “Aight. Appreciate it.”
He turned to leave, already pulling his phone out as he walked back toward the exit. He typed as he stepped outside into the night air.
jonathanfatu: mama you not at the club tonight?
It took a minute before the bubbles appeared.
badgyalci: no… I called out didn’t feel up to it
jonathanfatu: you still at the house?
badgyalci: yeah
Jimmy leaned against his car for a second, staring at her message.
jonathanfatu: I’m already out. Can I still come through?
There was a longer pause this time.
badgyalci: …yeah just give me like 15 minutes
jonathanfatu: aight. I’m on my way
He got back in the car, started the engine, and finally typed her address into the GPS.
The club lights faded in his rearview mirror as he pulled out of the parking lot.
Tonight wasn’t going to be about the stage or the private rooms.
Tonight he was going to see the real her.
Ciara had just finished changing into a soft oversized hoodie and black biker shorts when she heard the knock. She froze for a second, heart already racing. Her thighs still ached under the fabric. She quickly checked her face in the hallway mirror — eyes still a little puffy, but the makeup she had put on helped cover most of it.
She opened the door.
Jimmy stood there in a black fitted shirt and jeans, looking just as fine as he had the night before, but his expression was different. Softer. Concerned.
“Hey,” he said, voice low.
“Hey…” Ciara stepped aside to let him in. “You can come in.”
He walked past her, glancing around the apartment. It still looked new — furniture mostly put together, a few candles lit, the soft glow of LED lights coming from the bedroom down the hall. The place smelled faintly like vanilla and incense.
Jimmy turned back to face her once she closed the door.
“You good?” he asked.
Ciara nodded too quickly. “Yeah. Just been tired.”
He studied her face for a second longer than usual. “You don’t look like you slept good.”
She looked away, walking toward the kitchen. “You want something to drink? Water? I got soda too.”
“I’m good,” he said, following her slowly. “Ciara.”
She stopped at the counter but didn’t turn around.
Jimmy leaned against the opposite counter, arms crossed. “Talk to me. For real. What happened last night after you left?”
She stayed quiet for a moment, fingers playing with the sleeve of her hoodie.
“Nothing,” she finally said. “I just… went home.”
“That’s not nothing.” His voice stayed calm, but firm. “You left looking like somebody had just knocked the wind out of you. Then you ignored my messages. Then you called out of work. That ain’t ‘nothing.’”
Ciara’s throat tightened. She finally turned to face him, arms wrapped around herself.
“Your girlfriend said what she needed to say,” she muttered. “That’s all.”
Jimmy’s jaw flexed. “I already checked her about that. She was out of line.”
“Doesn’t matter.” Ciara gave a small, bitter smile. “She wasn’t wrong though. I am a stripper. And you do have a girlfriend. So maybe I should’ve stayed in my place from the beginning.”
Jimmy pushed off the counter and stepped closer, stopping just a few feet away from her.
“Don’t do that,” he said quietly. “Don’t let what she said get in your head like that.”
Ciara looked up at him, eyes a little glassy. “It’s already in my head, Jimmy. It’s been in my head long before her.”
The apartment went quiet. Only the soft hum of the refrigerator filled the space between them.
Jimmy’s voice dropped even lower. “What you mean by that?”
She shook her head and looked down. “Nothing. Just… forget it.”
He watched her for a long second, then slowly reached out and gently tilted her chin up so she had to look at him.
“I didn’t come over here just to make small talk,” he said. “I came because I was worried about you. And because I couldn’t stop thinking about how you looked when you walked out that door last night.”
Ciara’s breath caught. His hand was warm against her skin, careful, not demanding.
“You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered.
“I know,” he answered just as softly. “But I am.”
For a moment neither of them moved. The tension in the small kitchen felt thick — not just attraction, but something heavier. Something neither of them was ready to name yet.
Ciara finally stepped back, breaking the contact.
“You can sit down if you want,” she said, voice quieter now. “I’m not really in the mood to be on my feet.”
Jimmy nodded and followed her into the living room. He sat on one end of the couch while she carefully lowered herself onto the other, trying not to wince when the fabric brushed against her thighs.
He noticed.
“You hurt?” he asked, eyes narrowing slightly.
Ciara forced a small laugh. “Just sore from dancing and… everything. I’ll be fine.”
Jimmy didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t push. Not yet.
He leaned back against the couch, watching her.
“I’m not leaving until I know you’re actually okay,” he said simply.
Ciara looked at him for a long moment, then finally whispered,
“I’m trying to be.”
The living room stayed quiet for a while. Soft light from a nearby lamp cast a warm glow across the space. Ciara sat with her legs carefully tucked to the side, hoodie sleeves pulled over her hands. Jimmy stayed on the other end of the couch, giving her space but not looking away.
“You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to,” he said after a minute. “But I can tell something’s heavier than just last night.”
Ciara stared at the floor. Her voice came out small.
“I’m used to people talking to me like that… like I’m less than. Leon used to say the same kind of things. Over and over. After a while you start believing it.”
Jimmy’s expression darkened at the name, but he stayed quiet, letting her continue.
“When your girlfriend said what she said… it just hit the same place. Like I already knew I wasn’t good enough. Like I was stupid for even thinking someone like you would look at me twice outside of the club.”
She let out a shaky breath.
“I came home and… I didn’t handle it well.”
Jimmy’s eyes softened. “What do you mean?”
Ciara hesitated. Her fingers twisted in the hem of her hoodie. After a long pause, she slowly shifted on the couch, carefully pulling the soft fabric of her biker shorts up just enough on one side.
The faint but fresh burn marks on her inner thighs were visible under the light.
Jimmy’s whole body went still.
For a second he didn’t speak. His jaw tightened, and something pained flashed across his face.
“Ciara…” he said quietly, voice lower than before.
She quickly pulled the shorts back down, cheeks burning with shame. “I know. It’s ugly. I shouldn’t have—”
“Hey.” He moved closer carefully, not crowding her. “Look at me.”
She forced herself to meet his eyes. His were serious, but there was no judgment in them. Only concern.
“You don’t have to hide that from me,” he said. “I’m not looking at you any different. I’m just… worried. That shit ain’t something you should be dealing with by yourself.”
Tears welled up in her eyes before she could stop them. She wiped them away quickly with her sleeve.
“I haven’t done it in a while,” she whispered. “Not since I left him. But last night everything just… piled up. The things she said. The way I already feel about myself. It got loud in my head.”
Jimmy ran a hand over his face, then leaned forward, elbows on his knees.
“I’m sorry she said that to you. For real. And I’m sorry I put you in a position where she even had the chance. That ain’t on you.”
Ciara shook her head. “You don’t have to apologize for her.”
“I do,” he said firmly. “Because I brought you around. And because I keep coming around you when I know my situation is complicated. That ain’t fair to you.”
The room went quiet again. Only the soft sound of her shaky breathing filled the space.
After a moment, Jimmy spoke again, softer this time.
“You don’t have to tell me everything tonight. But I need you to know… if that voice in your head starts getting loud again, you can call me. Text me. Whatever. I’d rather you reach out than hurt yourself.”
Ciara looked at him, eyes still glassy. “Why do you care so much? You barely know me.”
Jimmy held her gaze.
“Because something about you feels real,” he said simply. “And because I can tell you’ve been carrying a lot by yourself for a long time. You don’t have to keep doing that.”
Ciara’s bottom lip trembled. She looked down at her hands, then slowly nodded.
“I’m trying,” she whispered. “I really am.”
Jimmy didn’t reach for her. He just stayed close enough that she could feel his presence — steady, calm, and present.
“I know,” he said. “And I’m not going nowhere right now. Not until I know you’re okay.”
For the first time since last night, Ciara felt a small, fragile sense of safety settle in her chest.
She didn’t have the words yet.
But she didn’t pull away either.
The quiet stretched between them for a while. Ciara kept her eyes on her hands, fingers twisting the sleeve of her hoodie. Jimmy stayed where he was, giving her space but making it clear he wasn’t leaving.
Eventually she spoke again, voice barely above a whisper.
“Leon wasn’t always like that… at least that’s what I told myself.”
Jimmy stayed silent, listening.
“In the beginning he was sweet. Patient. Made me feel like I was special. My parents basically pushed us together, so I thought it was meant to be. I was sheltered my whole life. I didn’t know any better. I thought love was supposed to hurt sometimes.”
She swallowed hard.
“The first time he cheated, I cried for days. He apologized, said it would never happen again. I believed him. Then it happened again. And again. Every time I tried to leave, he would turn it around on me. Tell me I was insecure. That no other man would want me. That I was lucky he stayed.”
Her voice cracked a little.
“When the cheating wasn’t enough to keep me quiet… that’s when the hands started. Little things at first. Grabbing my arm too hard. Pushing me. Then it got worse. The night I left… he backhanded me so hard I saw stars. That’s when I finally ran.”
Jimmy’s hands slowly curled into fists on his knees, but he didn’t interrupt.
Ciara wiped under her eyes with the sleeve of her hoodie.
“I drove all the way to Atlanta with nothing but a bag and a bruised face. Jasmine took me in. Helped me get this apartment. Helped me start over. But some nights… the things he used to say still play in my head like a broken record. Especially when somebody new makes me feel even a little bit seen.”
She finally looked at him.
“That’s why last night hit so hard. Your girlfriend didn’t just insult me. She said the exact same things Leon used to. And for a second… it felt like I never left.”
Jimmy exhaled slowly, like he was trying to keep his anger in check.
“I’m sorry you went through that,” he said, voice low and steady. “Nobody should ever make you feel like you’re not enough. Especially not somebody who claimed to love you.”
Ciara gave a small, tired smile. “It’s hard to unlearn it. Some days I wake up and I still feel like that same scared girl who thought she had to stay.”
Jimmy shifted a little closer, careful not to invade her space.
“You’re not that same girl anymore,” he said. “You left. You started over. You’re building something for yourself. That takes strength most people don’t have.”
She looked down again. “Doesn’t feel like strength when I’m on the bathroom floor burning myself just to feel something else.”
“That doesn’t make you weak,” Jimmy replied firmly. “That means the pain got too loud. But you’re sitting here talking about it. That counts for something.”
Ciara’s eyes filled again, but this time she didn’t wipe the tears away as fast.
“I don’t want to be this version of myself forever,” she whispered. “I want to be okay. I want to feel normal. I want to stop flinching every time somebody raises their voice or looks at me too long.”
Jimmy’s voice softened.
“You will. It’s just gon’ take time. And you don’t have to do it by yourself.”
She glanced up at him, searching his face.
“You keep saying that… but you have a whole life, Jimmy. A girlfriend. A family. A business. Why are you sitting here with me like this?”
He held her gaze without looking away.
“Because something about you won’t leave my head,” he admitted. “And because I hate seeing you carry all this alone. I know my situation is messy. I know I shouldn’t be here like this. But right now… I just want to make sure you’re okay.”
Ciara stared at him for a long moment. The honesty in his voice made her chest ache in a different way.
“I’m scared of you,” she finally whispered.
Jimmy’s brows pulled together slightly. “Why?”
“Because you make me feel safe,” she said. “And the last time I felt safe with a man… it turned into a nightmare.”
The confession hung heavy between them.
Jimmy didn’t try to fix it with empty words. He just nodded slowly, understanding the weight of what she just gave him.
“I’m not him,” he said quietly. “And I’m not gon’ rush you or push you. But I’m also not gon’ disappear just because things are complicated.”
Ciara let out a shaky breath and leaned her head back against the couch, eyes closing for a second.
“Thank you… for listening,” she whispered.
“Anytime,” Jimmy answered.
And for the first time in a long time, she actually believed him.
ೀ
Time passed quietly.
Ciara had drifted into a light sleep against Jimmy’s side, her breathing finally even. The tension in her body had softened just enough for her to rest. Jimmy stayed still the entire time, careful not to wake her, one arm still resting along the back of the couch near her shoulder.
He looked down at her for a long moment.
Even asleep, there was a sadness that lingered on her face. The puffy eyes, the way her brows stayed slightly drawn together… it made something protective settle heavy in his chest.
He knew he couldn’t stay all night. Not with the situation at home. Not with how complicated everything already was.
Carefully, Jimmy shifted. Ciara stirred but didn’t fully wake as he slowly eased her down so her head rested against one of the couch pillows. She mumbled something soft in her sleep, but her eyes stayed closed.
Jimmy stood, quiet, and grabbed the soft throw blanket from the back of the couch. He unfolded it and gently laid it over her body, tucking it around her shoulders so she wouldn’t get cold. His movements were slow and deliberate, like he was handling something fragile.
He stood there for another second, just watching her.
Then he leaned down and pressed the softest kiss to her forehead — barely there, respectful, full of everything he couldn’t say out loud yet.
“Get some rest, mama,” he whispered.
Ciara’s face relaxed just a little at the sound of his voice.
Jimmy straightened up, grabbed his keys, and walked quietly to the door. He unlocked it, then locked it again from the inside before stepping out into the hallway, making sure it was secure behind him.
Outside, the night air was cool. He stood by his car for a moment, running a hand over his face before getting in.
As he pulled away from her apartment complex, one thought kept looping in his head:
He was already in deeper than he meant to be.
And leaving her like that — safe, covered, resting — still didn’t feel like enough.
The house was quiet when Jimmy walked in.
He closed the front door softly behind him and kicked off his shoes, already bracing himself. The living room light was still on. Nia was sitting on the couch in one of his T-shirts, arms crossed, phone in her hand. The second she looked up and saw him, her expression hardened.
“Where the hell have you been?”
Jimmy didn’t answer right away. He walked past her toward the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge.
“Out,” he said simply.
Nia stood up. “Out where, Jonathan? It’s almost one in the morning. You left the shop hours ago and didn’t answer none of my texts.”
He leaned against the counter, twisting the cap off the water. “I went to check on somebody.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Somebody. You mean that stripper?”
Jimmy’s jaw flexed. “Her name is Ciara.”
“Oh, so now we’re on a first-name basis?” Nia stepped closer, voice rising. “You left me here after we already argued, ignored my calls, and went to see some girl from the club? Are you serious right now?”
“I told you earlier she was going through something,” Jimmy said, trying to keep his voice even. “After the way you talked to her at my mama’s house, I felt like I needed to make sure she was okay.”
Nia let out a bitter laugh. “You felt like you needed to? Since when is that your responsibility? She’s not your girlfriend. I am.”
“I’m aware of that.”
“Are you?” She folded her arms tighter. “Because from where I’m standing, you’re putting more energy into this girl than into us. You defended her last night. You went to the club looking for her. And now you’re coming home at one in the morning after being at her place?”
Jimmy set the water bottle down harder than he meant to. “I didn’t sleep with her. I didn’t even touch her like that. I sat on the couch, we talked, and she fell asleep. That’s it.”
“You stayed long enough for her to fall asleep?” Nia’s voice cracked with anger. “Do you hear yourself? You sat up in another woman’s house while I’m here waiting on you?”
“She was going through it, Nia. Real shit. Not everything is about you.”
That made her flinch, then her eyes flashed.
“So now I’m the problem?” she snapped. “I’m the problem for not wanting my man around some dancer who clearly wants his attention? I’m the problem for calling out what I see?”
Jimmy rubbed a hand over his face, exhausted. “You crossed the line last night. You disrespected her in my mama’s house. And instead of owning that, you keep doubling down.”
“Because I’m protecting what’s mine!” Nia shot back. “Something you’re clearly forgetting how to do.”
The room went silent for a second. Only the low hum of the refrigerator filled the space.
Jimmy looked at her — really looked at her — and for the first time in a long time, the love that used to come easy felt complicated.
“I’m sleeping on the couch tonight,” he said finally.
Nia’s face twisted. “Of course you are. Just like last night. Keep choosing the couch over me, Jonathan. Keep choosing her.”
He didn’t respond. He just grabbed a pillow and blanket from the hall closet and walked back into the living room.
Nia stood there watching him, chest rising and falling fast.
“You’re going to regret this,” she said quietly, but with venom. “Mark my words.”
Jimmy laid the blanket out on the couch without looking at her.
“Goodnight, Nia.”
She stared at him for a long moment, then turned and stormed upstairs. The bedroom door slammed hard enough to shake the frame.
Jimmy sat down on the couch, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor.
His phone buzzed once in his pocket.
He pulled it out.
A single message from Ciara.
badgyalci: thank you for staying… even if it was just for a little while
Jimmy stared at the text for a long time.
Then he locked his phone, laid back on the couch, and closed his eyes.
The house was quiet again.
But nothing about it felt peaceful.

Who I Can Run To? - Part 3 & 4
Part 3:
Jey sat on the other side of the VIP section, enjoying the music. He kept glancing over at Sharmela, feeling curious about her. As the night went on, everyone had drinks and enjoyed themselves.
“Go talk to her...” Jon said, snapping Jey out of his daze.
“Who?” Jey asked
Jon used his chin and pointed in Sharmela’s direction. Jey looked over and saw that Sharmela was talking to Montez and Bianca.
“She looks busy...” Jey said.
Jon shook his head and laughed. Jey smiled and walked to the bar. As he ordered his drink, he sensed a change in the atmosphere. Looking over, he saw Sharmela standing beside him, ordering another vodka and cranberry.
“Hey,” Jey said as he turned to face her.
“Hey, how are you doing?” Sharmela asked.
Something about the way Sharmela asked Jey, “How are you?” made Jey’s chest tighten. No one had ever really asked him how he was before.
“I’m good.. What about yourself?” Jey asked.
“Same, just trying to get used to the craziness of the WWE...” Sharmela answered as the bartender handed them their drinks.
“I understand, our world can get a little crazy...” Jey said as he and Sharmela walked back to the VIP section.
As Sharmela and Jey walked in, Charlotte and Jon looked at them and smiled.
“Thank you for bringing her out...” Jon whispered to Charlotte.
“No problem, I think they will be good for each other,” Charlotte said as she watched Sharmela and Jey sit next to each other on the couch.
As the night went on, Sharmela and Jey talked and got to know each other. Their easy laughter stood out in the booth, drawing curious looks from Charlotte and Jon. Jey shared a funny story about trying to make banana pancakes for his sons and almost setting off the smoke alarm, which made Sharmela laugh out loud. She told him about sneaking into her grandmother’s wrestling parties as a kid just to watch the entrances, a tradition she still keeps. Between the stories and laughter, there were quiet moments, sometimes long enough for their smiles to fade. Sharmela would look away, tracing her finger around the rim of her glass and watching the condensation. Neither of them pulled away right away, letting the moment linger, quiet and uncertain. Jey cleared his throat, looking down, a half-smile drifting off his lips. At one point, Sharmela asked about his favorite moments with his sons, her voice gentle but careful. Jey paused, the memory of missed family breakfasts pressing in on him, and for a second, he just stared at the table, jaw tensed. He glanced up finally, eyes tight with an ache he tried not to show, and said softly, "It's been hard lately. I don't always know how to be the dad they need." The words hovered between them, making the air thick. Sharmela didn't rush in to fill the silence; she just watched him, her gaze steady and open, making room for his vulnerability without pushing. After a long moment, she said quietly, "I think you care more than you let yourself believe."
She reached across the table and rested her hand on his for a moment. Jey felt her thumb brush his knuckles and was surprised by how comforting it was. He didn’t say anything else, but the silence felt different, as if they both understood each other without words. Sharmela squeezed his hand again before letting go, her look showing she understood even what he couldn’t say.
Songs they both loved came on, and they guessed lyrics in a playful competition, each losing count of who was winning. When a slow song played, Jey offered his hand with a grin, masking his nerves. On the dance floor, they moved easily together, but for a moment, Jey glanced away, looking almost vulnerable, like he was wrestling with the courage to be seen. Sharmela noticed, squeezing his hand a bit tighter. As the song ended and they walked back, Jey lingered close by Sharmela’s side, the nervous warmth between them making the connection feel real. When the night ended, Jey didn’t want to leave her side, a mix of hope and uncertainty settling in his chest.
"It's been a long time since I met someone I can talk to like this," he said with a gentle smile.
"I feel the same," Sharmela replied, meeting his gaze with warmth in her eyes. This new connection felt refreshing, as if they had known each other for much longer.
“So, I was wondering if I could get your number?” Jey asked as he and Sharmela were leaving the club.
Sharmela looked up at Jey and smiled, “Sure...” She hesitated for a moment, then added quietly, "I'd like that."
Sharmela and Jey exchanged numbers. Jey leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek, making her blush. Her cheeks felt warm, and she smiled at how sincere he was, hoping it meant something more might happen.
“Text me when you get back to the hotel, so I know you're safe,” Jey said as Charlotte grabbed Sharmela’s hand and pulled her away.
Jey stood there, watching as Sharmela and Charlotte walked away. He was snapped back to reality when Jon slapped him on his shoulder.
“You good, bro?” Jon asked.
“Um.. Yeah.. “ Jey said as he watched Sharmela disappear through the doors.
Jey and Jon left the club and headed to their car. As Jey got in the passenger seat, he thought about Sharmela. He never expected to meet someone and feel such a strong connection so quickly.
As Jey got ready for bed, his phone buzzed on the nightstand. He picked it up and saw Sharmela’s name pop up on the screen. He smiled as he opened his phone and checked his messages.
“We made it back to the hotel safely. Thanks for keeping me company tonight.”
Jey smiled as he read Sharmela’s message. He had a good time talking to her and getting to know her.
“I’m glad you're safe. It was my pleasure hanging out with you.”
Jey sent the message and put his phone down on the nightstand. As he got comfortable in the bed, his phone buzzed again. He checked his messages, and it was from Sharmela, a simple “Good night.” He replied, put his phone down, and began to doze off with Sharmela on his mind.
The next morning, Jey was jolted out of his sleep by someone banging on the door.
“What fuck?” Jey muttered as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.
He picked up the phone and looked at the time; it was 8 am. He sighed as he pulled himself out of the bed and walked to the door. He looked through the peephole and saw Jon on the other side of the door.
“Bro, are you crazy?” Jey said as he opened the door.
Jon shook his head and laughed at his little brother. Jon had too much energy for someone who came home from the club at 3am.
Jey walked back into the room with Jon behind him. Jey plopped back down on the bed, and Jon sat in the chair.
“Nah, we're getting up and getting dressed. The girls want to get breakfast before we have to be at the arena.” Jon said as he pulled the blanket off his brother.
Jey looked at Jon and smiled, “That sounds like a plan. Let me get ready.”
Jon laughed at Jey; he knew that once he heard the girls wanted food, Jey would be down.
Half an hour later, Jey came out of the bathroom ready to tackle the morning. He wore an all-black outfit, his silver chain glistening on his neck.
“You ready?” Jon asked as he watched Jey walk across the room.
“Hell yeah, let’s go...’ Jey said as she slipped on his shoes.
Jon and Jey walked out of the room and headed to the elevator. When the elevator stopped on floor 5, the guys were greeted by Sharmela, Charlotte, and Trinity. Jey’s eyes instantly locked on Sharmela, who was wearing her favorite purple “Yeet” shirt, black leggings, and her black knee-high boots.
“I see you repping the main event...” Jon said.
Sharmela looked down at her shirt and blushed. “It’s my favorite color.”
When the elevator door closed, Charlotte stood in front of the couple. Trinity was snuggled up with Jon, and Sharmela was standing next to Jey, awkwardly. The elevator came to a stop, and the doors opened into the lobby, where everyone started to file out, leaving Sharmela and Jey to get off last. Jey reached out and grabbed Sharmela’s hand as they both walked off the elevator. Sharmela looked down at her hand, feeling confused.
“You okay?” Jey asked.
“Uhh, yeah, the last time someone grabbed my hand it wasn’t so gentle,” Sharmela said as they walked to where everyone was standing.
Sharmela tucked her hair behind her ear and looked away for a moment. There was a quiet hesitation in her voice, hinting at memories Jey didn’t know. He noticed how alert she was, checking her phone out of habit. For a moment, Jey wondered about the stories behind her careful smile, and he squeezed her hand more gently to reassure her.
Sharmela took a deep breath and turned to face the group. As everyone got into the truck, Jey and Sharmela were sitting next to each other. He gently wrapped his arm around her waist, which made her feel safe. Sharmela exhaled the breath she did not know she was holding, and she relaxed against Jey’s side.
The drive to the diner was filled with conversation and laughter. But Jey noticed Sharmela was quiet and kept looking out the window.
“Shar, are you okay?” Jey asked, snapping Sharmela out of her daze.
“Yeah, just sitting here thinking...” Sharmela answered.
“You can talk to me if you want...” Jey said.
“I know, but let’s go eat first,” Sharmela said as the truck came to a stop.
The driver came out, opened the door, and everyone filed out of the truck and headed into the diner. Once everyone was seated and had ordered their food, the table was quiet. Jon cleared his throat, and everyone looked at him.
“So, before we start eating, I want to welcome Sharmela to our crazy world. I hope we don’t scare you away. “Jon said, raising his glass of juice in the air.
“Thank you.. And nothing can scare me. I’m built for this.” Sharmela said, clinking her glass with everyone.
Jey watched Sharmela take a sip of her juice. He sees something in her that he would like to learn more about. The food came, and everyone ate, laughed, and told stories of the road. When it was time to pay the bill, the twins paid, and then they all headed back to the hotel.
“Hey, do you want to hang out and watch a movie?” Jey asked Sharmela when everyone got in the truck.
“Sure...” Sharmela said as she climbed into the truck and got comfortable before Jey got in
As the truck drove to the hotel, Sharmela took her phone out and sent Charlotte a text.
“Going back to Jey’s room to hang out and watch a movie...”
Charlotte took her phone out and read the text. She looked at Sharmela and smiled.
“Be careful and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”
Sharmela smiled at Charlotte’s reply and put her phone back into her purse. As the truck came to a stop, the butterflies started to fly in Sharmela’s stomach.
“There’s no reason to be scared. You guys are only watching a movie together.” Sharmela thought.
Everyone got out of the truck, took the elevator, and headed to their rooms. As Jey was changing into his bedroom clothes, his phone buzzed. When he looked at the screen, it was Charlotte.
“Uce, don’t do anything crazy tonight. Just make Sharmela feel safe.”
Jey smiled at the message. He loves Charlotte's sisterly concern.
“Don’t worry, Queen, I will make her feel safe.”
Jey sent his reply and put his phone down. The phone buzzed, and someone knocked on the door. Jey went to the door and opened it to find Sharmela on the other side, holding snacks and drinks.
“I come bearing gifts,” Sharmela said as Jey moved out of the doorway to let her in.
“Oh, the good stuff...” Jey said as he watched Sharmela walk through the door.
Sharmela walked into the room and placed the drinks and snacks on the table. Jey came in and smiled. Sharmela had changed into her purple pajamas and her fuzzy slippers.
“So what kind of movies do you like?” Jey asked.
“I like comedy, action, and horror,” Sharmela said,
Jey’s eyes grew wide at the fact that Sharmela likes horror movies.
“You don’t look like the type to like horror movies...” Jey said as he turned on the TV and started flipping through the movie catalog.
“Well, Mr. Fatu, there’s a lot that will surprise you about me,” Sharmela said as she got comfortable on his bed.
“Oh, and I'm ready to find it all out, Ms.Singh.” Jey said as he found “Child’s Play” on the movie list.
“Oh yes, one of my favorite movies as a kid,” Sharmela said.
Jey grabbed a bag of chips and a couple of bottles of water and sat next to Sharmela on the bed. Lying next to Sharmela and watching a movie felt like the most natural thing, as if they belonged together.
Chuckie is on the screen, stabbing a man to death, and Sharmela started laughing. Jey looked at her like she was crazy.
“Girl, you're laughing at the craziest parts...” Jey said.
Sharmela smiled, “Watching these movies as an adult is funny. But as a kid, it scared me as hell.”
As the day went on, Sharmela and Jey hung out and watched more movies. They had room service for lunch. As they were waiting for the food, Jey sat next to Sharmela on the bed and started playing with her bracelets.
"So, you said the last time someone grabbed your hand it was nice... What happened?" Jey asked.
Sharmela looked at Jey with sadness in her eyes. Jey reached for her hand.
"I had an ex that was abusive..." Sharmela said.
"Enough said..." Jey said, holding Sharmela's hand.
Before Sharmela could say anything else, there was a knock on the door. Jey got up from the bed and answered the door, bringing the food into the room. Sharmela helped set up the food.
“This burger and fries are so good,” Sharmela said.
“Yeah, that was a good choice,” Jey said, looking at Sharmela.
Sharmela looked at Jey and smiled at his sleepy face.
“You look sleepy...” Sharmela said.
“Yeah, these long days are catching up on me,” Jey said.
“Well, you should take a nap. I will go back to my room.” Sharmela said.
“No, stay and lie with me,” Jey said.
The words slipped out of Jey’s mouth before he could stop himself, and he looked at Sharmela for her reaction.
Sharmela blushed, “Okay...”
Sharmela lay on the bed next to Jey, and it felt natural. As she settled in, she felt a flutter of nerves. It had been a long time since she let herself relax beside someone new. She wondered if he could sense her hope for a fresh start after past heartbreaks. For a moment, old fears about being vulnerable and getting hurt tried to return, but she focused on the comfort of being with Jey. Looking at him, she let herself believe she could take a chance and let something good begin again.
Part 4:
Sharmela’s eyes drifted open slowly, not knowing where she was until she felt an arm around her waist and the soft snoring coming from beside her. She looked over to her left and found Jey in a deep slumber. She looked around the room and spotted her phone on the nightstand. She turned on the screen and checked the time.
“9 pm...” Sharmela muttered to herself, “We must have been tired to fall asleep for 7 hours.”
Jey stirred in his sleep and slowly opened his eyes. He smiled when he saw Sharmela sitting up in bed, and his arm was still draped around her waist.
“Hey...” Sharmela said as Jey rubbed his eyes like a little baby, making her smile.
“Hey, beautiful,” Jey said as he sat up in bed.
Sharmela smiled, “How did you sleep?”
It was amazing, I can’t tell you the last time I had such a good sleep.” Jey said as he lay his head on Sharmela’s lap.
Before Sharmela could say anything, there was a knock on the door. Jey got up from the bed and walked to the door. Sharmela smiled when she heard Jimmy’s voice as the boys came back into the room. Jimmy stopped when he saw Sharmela in the bed.
“Hey!” Jimmy said as he sat down on the couch.
“Hey,” Sharmela said, pulling the blanket higher.
“So, what’s the plan for the night?” Jimmy asked.
“Nothing, just hanging out and catching up on some sleep,” Jey said as he lay back down next to Sharmela.
“Oh, I feel that...” Jimmy said.
After a few minutes, Jimmy headed back to his room, leaving Sharmela and Jey in the room.
‘Thank you for tonight...” Sharmela said
“For what?’ Jey asked, looking at Shamela with her halo of curls surrounding her round face.
“For making me feel comfortable and not out of place,” Sharmela said.
“To be honest, it’s been a long time since I’ve felt comfortable with someone, since my divorce,” Jey said.
Sharmela’s gaze softened when she heard about Jey’s divorce. Sharmela placed her hand on Jey’s cheek.
“I’m sorry to hear about your divorce,” Sharmela said.
“It’s been a year since the divorce, and it's time for me to get back in the game,” Jey said as he held Sharmela’s hand and placed a gentle kiss on her palm.
The kiss caused the heat to creep up Sharmela’s neck, and her cheeks turned pink. Jey looked at Sharmela and smiled as he noticed her blushing.
“But can I be honest with you?” Jey asked.
Yeah, sure...” Sharmela said.
“Ever since I met you in the club, there’s something about you that has attracted me to you. I would love to get to know you more.” Jey said, “Would you like that?”
“I would love that,” Sharmela said, lying next to Jey and cuddling close to him.
Jey let out a breath and held Sharmela close. He hoped he wouldn’t mess things up and that he and Sharmela could grow closer.

based on this! sending a big hug and a special thanks to @uceybluecy for the inspo 🖤 enjoy ;)
you laughed into the phone as you put the car in reverse, checking your backup camera every so often while slowly backing into your parking spot. your tires crunched against the gravel path, the sound mixing with jey’s irritated voice blasting through your speakers.
a bit of a complicated history, but you used to be high school sweethearts with your now best friend, jey.
he had plans to marry you the minute the two of you graduated. the day before you left for college was supposed to be the day he proposed, but you beat him to it. you broke up with him that morning instead, cancelling the impromptu date and telling him you were scared of the distance. you were moving out of state, after all.
grabbing your lunch bag and nudging the driver’s door shut with your hip, you made your way toward the entrance of the building. “you should’ve been more patient,” you say, catching the eye of a guy standing outside on his smoke break. it was only 8:55 a.m., and judging by the cigarette hanging from his lips, he was already over the day. “but i’ll talk to you later, ’kay?”
you never really atoned for the past. why would you? life kept moving whether you apologized or not. you graduated, landed a job in the field you went to school for and settled into a routine that worked for you. there was no reason to dig up something that had already been buried, especially when jey had done the same thing in his own way.
his career was on an incline, and an engagement ring sat proudly on his fiancée’s finger. somewhere along the way, jey became a demon or maybe that was just the side of him you never had the chance to see.

Ucey Family Affair (Jey Uso x OC)
Chapter 1: First Love
Summary: After their divorce is finalized, Sara and Josh work together to maintain mutual friendship for their daughters Jeyniah and Saraya
Contains: Fluff
Sara
She was with Saraya and Jeyniah at the pool watching them swim. The girls were visiting her on their break from school. She closed her eyes as for a moment she flashed back to a time with Joshua and in the pool with their girls. Him playing with them, teaching them how to swim. “Mama? Are you okay? “ Shaken from her tears as she saw them both sitting with her. She gripped their hands “I’m okay, girls. I promise. “ She smiled nodding
Jeyniah
“It’s dad isn’t it? You miss him, dont you? I miss him too. “ She and her sister both nodded. She hated having a broken family. Everyone thought she and her twin sister were too young to understand but she wasnt stupid. “You want me to call him up? “ Jeyniah asked
Saraya
She too thought about the times they were with their Dad. How he would pick her up on his shoulders and swing her around. She smiled a little at the memory “Can we FaceTime him, mama? Can we? “ She sounded like a jumpy 3 year old.
Jey
It was as if he and his daughters were telepathic. He clicked the FaceTime app with Saraya not knowing they were with Sara. Soon the video picked up “Hey there’s my princesses! “ A smile formed on his features. Ever since the divorce he had done everything in the world to help with his girls “What y’all up to? “ He saw they were at the pool. And then he saw her. For a moment his heart stopped, he was holding back his tears “Hey Sara, how are you? You been doing okay? “
Sara
The way he still said her name, it made her heart stop. Having not heard his voice in forever and only on tv. She could only stare at him as a child-like voice came out of her “Hello Josh, I’m doing alright. Glad to see you with the girls. “ She just stared at the phone almost like she was staring into space “You look amazing as always and still very handsome. “ She smiled softly
Jey
“Am I still as sexy as the day you met me? “ They all laughed as he grinned “But for real, I hope you’re doing okay. Tell you what I’ll book you ladies a flight and y’all can come see me. Or even to my house in Florida which would be closer for you. I really want to see you all. “ He said with a smile “I’ve been busy with Bloodline stuff. Feels like old times but this time I want to celebrate with my ladies. “ He winked a little
~1 Day Later~
Sara
She and Jeyniah and Saraya were doing stuff around the house eating their breakfast when the doorbell rang. She opened the door seeing Joshua standing there with roses, she smiled. “Good Morning beautiful. Can I come in? “ She heard that deep voice of his as she blushed “Of course. You’re just in time for breakfast. “
Jey
He smiled walking in as he placed the roses on the table as he hugged his girls “Decided to surprise you all instead. “ They smiled as he teared up seeing how beautiful and strong his daughters had grown. He looked to Sara “Thank you for making them turn out to be wonderful young ladies. They are beautiful. “ He smiled as he watched the girls make their plate as he whispered to her “Thank you for not making them hate me. I dont deserve to be their father. “
Sara
She shook her head and put her finger to his lips “You’re welcome. Now shh, you’re here now and they are greatful. I am greatful to you. “ She grinned as they all sat to eat enjoying the time with one another. She playfully rolled her eyes as Josh did his “warning shot” thing as they laughed, she couldn’t help but smile.
Jeyniah
Watching her parents interact for the first time in years and hearing her mother laugh made her heart full. She was glad her dad was back in her life and she would be damned if he left again. But she was going to enjoy the moment they were now in.
Jey
For the first time in a long time he was truly laughing and smiling. It was his girls who brought him peace. And it was the love of his life right in front of him who made him stronger. Somehow he had to get her back. He knew he would in time

Atlanta, Georgia - Ciara’s apartment complex
The next morning, sunlight peeked through the curtains in Ciara’s apartment. She barely slept, tossing and turning all night thinking about the stage, the lights, and what tonight would really feel like. Her body still buzzed from the audition, but the nerves were already creeping back in.
Jasmine showed up early, banging on the door with two iced coffees in hand.
“Wake up, superstar! We got shit to do today,” Jasmine called out as she let herself in with the spare key.
Ciara sat up on the couch, rubbing her eyes. “Jas… it’s too early for all that energy.”
“Too early? Girl, you got your first real night at Eclipse tonight. We not playing. Get up and get dressed. I’m taking you to my girl’s salon. She’s the best in the city.”
Ciara groaned but stood up anyway. “I don’t even know what to do with my hair for this. I was just gon’ throw it in a ponytail or something.”
Jasmine gave her a look like she had lost her mind. “A ponytail? Absolutely not. Tonight you need to serve. We getting you a middle part bust down. Something sleek but sexy. You gon’ walk in that club looking like money.”
Ciara laughed nervously as she changed into some sweats. “You really think this is a good idea? I still can’t believe I got the job.”
“Believe it, bestie. You killed that audition. Now we just making sure you look the part too.”
Thirty minutes later, they pulled up to a cute little beauty salon called Crown & Glory. The outside was painted soft pink and gold, and the smell of hair products and fresh braids hit them as soon as they walked in.
A pretty, thick woman with long pink and blonde curls looked up from behind the front desk. “Jasmine! Hey, mama!” she called out, smiling big.
“Hey, Tasha! This is my best friend Ciara I was telling you about,” Jasmine said, pulling Ciara forward. “She needs the works. Middle part bust down, make it look expensive. She got her first night at the club tonight.”
Tasha looked Ciara up and down, nodding in approval. “Ooh, I see you, sis. You got a nice face card. Come sit down. We gon’ have you looking right.”
Ciara sat in the chair, feeling shy as Tasha started parting her hair. “Thank you for squeezing me in last minute. I know it’s probably busy.”
“Girl, anything for Jasmine’s people,” Tasha said, running her fingers through Ciara’s hair. “So what kind of club we talking? You dancing or bartending?”
Ciara glanced at Jasmine, then back at Tasha through the mirror. “Dancing…”
Tasha smirked. “Say less. You gon’ need this hair swinging then. Middle part, deep waves, bust all the way down. We adding some length too — nothing crazy, just enough to make them niggas lose they mind when you on that pole.”
Jasmine sat in the chair next to her, flipping through a magazine. “Exactly. Ciara too pretty to be hiding behind a ponytail. Tonight you walking in there like you already that girl.”
Ciara smiled a little, but her voice stayed soft. “I’m still nervous as hell. What if I mess up? What if they don’t like me?”
Tasha laughed while sectioning the hair. “Baby, the first night is always scary. But once that music hit and them lights on you? You gon’ forget half them people out there. Just dance like you did at that audition. And trust — that middle part gon’ do most of the work for you.”
Jasmine nodded. “Plus, I’m dropping you off and picking you up. You not doing this alone. And if anybody gets out of line, you got security and you got me.”
Ciara let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding. “Y’all really hyping me up like this… I don’t know how to thank you.”
“You thank me by stacking that paper and getting your own bag,” Jasmine said with a wink. “Fuck Leon and all that old shit. This is your new chapter, Ci. Own it.”
As Tasha worked the hair — adding bundles, flat ironing, and curling — Ciara watched herself transform in the mirror. The middle part was clean and sharp. The bust down waves fell beautifully past her shoulders, framing her face and making her eyes pop.
“Damn…” Ciara whispered when Tasha spun the chair around. “That’s really me?”
Tasha grinned. “That’s you, mama. Now go in that club tonight and make them remember your name.”
Jasmine stood up, admiring the finished look. “Period. She’s ready.”
Ciara touched her hair gently, feeling a small spark of confidence. It wasn’t just hair — it felt like armor.
She still had butterflies about tonight, but for the first time since leaving Nashville, she didn’t feel completely lost.
Now all that was left… was stepping on that stage for real.
After Tasha spun the chair one last time and sprayed Ciara’s hair with holding spray, they paid and stepped back out into the Atlanta sun. Ciara kept touching her hair, still shocked at how good it looked. The middle part was sharp, and the long bust down waves bounced with every step she took.
“Stop touching it before you mess it up,” Jasmine teased, unlocking the car. “You look too good right now. Come on, we going to the nail salon next. Can’t have you on stage with raggedy nails.”
Ciara laughed softly. “You really doing the most today.”
“Somebody gotta,” Jasmine said, starting the car. “You deserve to feel like that girl tonight. We doing this right.”
Fifteen minutes later, they pulled up to a busy nail salon called Luxury Touch. The smell of acrylic and nail polish hit them as soon as they walked in. Soft music played in the background while several techs worked on clients.
Jasmine spoke to the lady at the front. “Hey, we need two sets. She got a special night tonight, so make hers cute but sexy. Nothing too long — she gotta be able to grip that pole.”
Ciara’s eyes widened. “Jasmine!”
The lady at the front smiled knowingly. “Say less. We got you, baby.”
They sat side by side at the manicure tables. Ciara chose a soft but glossy black set with a little chrome on the tips. Jasmine went for a bold red with designs.
As the tech started soaking Ciara’s hands, Jasmine turned to her. “So… how you feeling for real? No cap.”
Ciara stared at her hands in the water. “Nervous as hell. My stomach been in knots since we left the hair salon. What if I get on stage and freeze again like I almost did at the audition?”
“You not gon’ freeze,” Jasmine said confidently. “You got past the hard part already. They hired you on the spot. That means Marcus saw something in you. Now you just gotta show up and get that money.”
The nail tech working on Ciara smiled. “First night dancing?”
“Yeah…” Ciara answered quietly. “I’m scared I’m gon’ look stupid up there.”
The tech shook her head. “Most girls feel like that the first time. Just breathe, listen to the music, and move slow. Them men pay more when you make them wait for it. And with that hair you got now? Baby, you already winning.”
Jasmine nodded. “Exactly. And remember what I told you — if it get too much, you can always switch to bartending or waitressing later. But I think you gon’ surprise yourself tonight.”
Ciara looked over at her best friend, eyes a little glassy. “I don’t know what I would do without you, Jas. For real. You didn’t have to do all this — hair, nails, riding with me… none of it.”
Jasmine waved her off. “Stop. You my sister. When you called me crying that night outside my house, I knew I was gon’ be there every step. Fuck Leon. Fuck your parents sheltering you. This is your time now.”
The tech on Jasmine added, “And you got a good best friend. A lot of girls go through stuff like you and don’t have nobody. You got her. That’s a blessing.”
Ciara smiled softly, feeling her chest get warm. “Y’all gon’ make me cry and mess up my lashes next.”
Jasmine laughed. “Don’t cry! We still got a couple more hours before we gotta get you ready. After this, we grabbing something to eat, then I’m helping you pick your first outfit for tonight.”
They sat there for the next hour, talking and laughing. Jasmine told funny stories from her own wild nights out to distract Ciara. By the time their nails were done — Ciara’s glossy black chrome tips looking expensive under the salon lights — she felt a little lighter.
Ciara held her hands up, admiring the fresh set. “They look good as hell…”
“Told you,” Jasmine said, blowing on her own nails. “Now you really look like you belong on that stage. Sexy, but still you. Quiet but deadly.”
As they left the nail salon, Ciara looked at her reflection in the car window — fresh middle part bust down, new nails shining. She still felt the fear, but it wasn’t as loud as before.
She whispered to herself, “You got this, Ciara.”
Jasmine heard her and smiled. “Hell yeah you do. Let’s go get some food, then we getting you ready for war.”
After leaving the nail salon, Jasmine drove them to one of their favorite spots — a little Caribbean spot called Island Vibes not too far from Ciara’s apartment.
They ordered at the counter and grabbed a booth in the corner. Ciara got jerk chicken with rice and peas, while Jasmine went for the curry goat. The smell of spices filled the air as they waited for their food.
Jasmine leaned back in her seat, looking at her fresh red nails. “This food finna hit different after all that running around today. You need to eat good before tonight. Can’t be shaking on stage on an empty stomach.”
Ciara picked at her straw. “I don’t even know if I can eat. My nerves still bad.”
“Girl, you better force it down,” Jasmine said, pointing her finger. “You already fine as hell with that hair and those nails. Now we just making sure you confident. Eat, go home, take a nap, then we getting you dressed. I’m staying with you until you walk in that club.”
Their food came out hot and fresh. As they ate, Jasmine kept the conversation light, cracking jokes and reminding Ciara of funny memories from when they were younger. For a little while, Ciara actually laughed and forgot about the pressure waiting for her tonight.
“You really think I can do this?” Ciara asked between bites.
“I know you can,” Jasmine said seriously. “You survived worse. This is just money. And who knows… maybe you’ll even enjoy it a little bit.”
Ciara gave a small smile. “Maybe.”
They finished eating, packed up the leftovers, and headed back to the apartment. Jasmine helped Ciara pick out her first official outfit for the night — a sleek black two-piece set that showed just enough but still left something to the imagination.
Meanwhile, across town at Uso Cuts Barbershop, the shop was loud and full of energy like it always was on Saturday afternoons.
Jimmy Uso stood behind his chair, lining up a client’s beard with precision. The shop smelled like fresh fades, aftershave, and the usual arguing between him and his twin.
“Aye, Uce, you trippin’,” Jey said from the next chair, laughing. “You really gon’ sit here and act like you ain’t losing to me this month on who got the better cuts.”
Jimmy smirked, not even looking up. “Keep dreaming, twin. My chair stay booked. Yours looking a lil slow over there.”
Their cousins Solo and Jacob were in the back cracking up, playing music and talking shit with the other barbers. The shop was family — blood and chosen. That was the one thing Jimmy always valued more than anything.
After he finished the line up, Jimmy dapped his client up and took a break, leaning against the counter sipping water. His phone buzzed — a text from his girlfriend checking in.
He replied short, keeping it sweet like usual. They had been together for a minute now. She was good to him. Loyal. Fine. But lately something felt… off. Like he was going through the motions.
Jey noticed his twin’s mood and walked over. “You good, bro? You been quiet all day.”
Jimmy shrugged. “Yeah, I’m straight. Just thinking. Tonight we still doing guys’ night at Eclipse, right?”
“Hell yeah,” Jey grinned. “Been a minute since we all kicked back. Drinks, girls, good vibes. You need it, Uce. You been working too hard.”
Solo walked up, wiping his hands. “Facts. You been all work and relationship lately. Come out with us and relax. Ain’t nothing wrong with looking.”
Jimmy chuckled, shaking his head. “Y’all wild. I got a girl, remember?”
“We know,” Jacob called from the back. “But looking ain’t cheating, fam. You married or something?”
Jimmy laughed it off, but deep down he knew they were right about one thing — he needed a night to just unwind. Between running the shop with his brothers and everything else, life had been feeling routine.
“Aight, I’m in,” he said, tossing his rag on the counter. “But I ain’t doing no wild shit. We go, we chill, we leave.”
Jey smirked like he didn’t believe him. “Yeah, we’ll see. Tonight gon’ be different, twin. I can feel it.”
Jimmy didn’t say anything, but as he looked around the shop at his family laughing and joking, he felt a small pull in his chest. Something was telling him tonight really might be different.
He just didn’t know how different yet.
ೀ
Later that night, the Atlanta streets were lit up as Jasmine pulled into the parking lot of Eclipse. The neon sign glowed purple and black, making Ciara’s stomach do flips the second she saw it.
“You got this, Ci,” Jasmine said, squeezing her hand before they got out the car. “Remember what we talked about. Short set, feel the music, and stack them tips. I’ll be in the back watching.”
Ciara nodded, clutching her duffle bag with her outfit and heels. Her fresh middle part bust down swayed as she walked, and her new nails clicked against her phone. She looked good — she knew that — but she still felt like a fraud.
They walked through the side entrance. The bouncer from her audition nodded at her. “New girl, right? Dressing room is down the hall. House mom is waiting.”
Inside the club, the music was already bumping even though it was still early. The lights were low, and a couple girls were on stage warming up the small crowd.
The dressing room was chaotic but organized — mirrors everywhere, lights bright, music playing from a speaker. Girls were doing makeup, fixing hair, and changing outfits. A tall, beautiful woman with long braids and a no-nonsense attitude walked up to them.
“You must be Ciara,” she said. “I’m Shay — house mom. Marcus told me about you. First night?”
“Yes, ma’am,” Ciara answered softly.
Shay looked her up and down. “Cute. You got that innocent but sexy thing going on. The customers gon’ eat it up. Go ahead and get changed. You’re on in about forty minutes. Pick a name for the stage too — something easy to remember.”
Ciara changed into the black two-piece set Jasmine helped her pick. The top was a sleek bralette-style, and the bottoms were high-cut with a little sparkle. She slipped on her clear heels and stared at herself in the mirror.
Jasmine stood behind her, fixing one of the waves in her hair. “You look like a whole different person. In the best way. How you feeling?”
“Like I might throw up,” Ciara admitted with a nervous laugh. “My hands won’t stop shaking, Jas.”
Shay walked back over and handed her a small shot of something clear. “Here. Liquid courage. Not too much — just enough to calm your nerves. First night jitters are normal. Just breathe, listen to the music, and dance like you own the stage. Don’t force it. Let them come to you.”
Ciara took the shot, feeling the burn go down. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
“What name you going by?” Shay asked.
Ciara thought for a second. “Nova.”
Shay smirked. “I like that. Mysterious. Alright, Nova — you’re up after the next girl. Go out there and make that money, baby.”
Jasmine gave her one last hug. “I love you. I’m right here if you need me. Go show them who you are now.”
Ciara stood backstage near the curtain, heart racing as she waited for her turn. The music from the current dancer’s set vibrated through the floor. She adjusted her robe, touched her hair one more time, and whispered to herself:
“I survived worse. This is just a stage. I got this.”
When the DJ announced her name, she stepped through the curtain and onto the stage.
The lights hit her. The crowd was decent for a weeknight — eyes already turning toward her.
Nova was on.
The DJ’s voice boomed through the speakers. “Alright, y’all… give it up for the new girl on the stage — Nova!”
The lights dimmed slightly, then shifted to a deep, seductive red and purple glow. The opening notes of “Motivation” by Kelly Rowland started playing, the smooth R&B beat filling the club.
Ciara — now Nova — stood at the center of the stage, heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her throat. For a second she almost froze. But as Kelly’s voice came in smooth and sultry, something shifted.
She started moving.
Her hips rolled slow and sensual, matching the tempo of the song. The long bust down waves swayed with her as she gripped the pole with one hand, sliding down into a smooth squat. She let her robe slip off her shoulders, revealing the black two-piece underneath. The crowd reacted immediately.
“Goddamn!” someone shouted from the front.
“New girl bad as hell!”
A few whistles cut through the music. More eyes turned toward the stage.
Nova kept flowing with the music. She wasn’t doing anything wild or over-the-top — her movements were controlled, hypnotic. She arched her back against the pole, letting her hands trail down her body, then spun slowly, making her hair whip around. When the chorus hit, she dropped low, popping her hips in time with the beat, thighs flexing, back arched perfectly.
The more she danced, the more the nerves melted away. She felt the music in her bones. For the first time in a long time, she felt powerful. Desired. In control.
The crowd was eating it up. Tips started flying onto the stage — ones, then fives, then twenties. Men moved closer to the stage, eyes locked on her quiet but deadly energy.
“Yo, she different,” one guy said loudly.
“She got that innocent face but moving like that? I’m in love already.”
Right as the song hit its second verse, Jimmy walked into Eclipse with Jey, Solo, and Jacob. The club was starting to pick up, music thumping, purple lights glowing.
“Finally, man,” Jey said, dapping up the bouncer. “Been needing this night out.”
They found a good booth near the main stage. Jimmy was just about to sit down when his eyes landed on the girl on stage.
He stopped mid-motion.
She was moving to “Motivation” like the song was made for her. Not the loudest dancer, not the most extra — but something about her caught him immediately. The way her long hair flowed with every turn, the smooth roll of her hips, that quiet confidence… it hit different.
“Damn,” Jimmy muttered under his breath.
Jey noticed and followed his twin’s gaze. “Ohhh, twin, you see shorty too, huh? She new. Looking good as hell.”
Solo leaned forward. “She got that ‘don’t touch me but look at me’ vibe. I like it.”
Jimmy didn’t say anything at first. He just watched her. The way she flowed with the music — sensual but not trying too hard — had the whole section of the club locked in. When she dropped low and came back up slow, hair swinging, the crowd went crazy, throwing more money.
He felt something stir in his chest. A pull he hadn’t felt in a long time.
“Yo, Uce,” Jey laughed, nudging him. “You good? You staring hard as hell.”
Jimmy blinked, finally sitting down, but his eyes kept going back to the stage. “She just… different, man. Not like the usual girls in here.”
Jacob grinned. “Well, we staying for a minute then. Looks like Nova finna be the highlight of the night.”
Jimmy leaned back in the booth, sipping his drink, but he couldn’t take his eyes off her. Something about the quiet girl on stage had his full attention.
And for the first time in a while… he wasn’t thinking about anything else.
The beat of “Motivation” kept building as Nova worked the pole. She climbed a little higher, legs wrapping gracefully as she leaned back, letting her hair fall dramatically. The crowd was fully locked in now. More money rained onto the stage — twenties and fifties fluttering down around her.
She slid down smoothly into a split, rolling her hips to the floor, then came back up slow and seductive, eyes half-lidded. The song was nearing its end, and she gave one final spin around the pole, back arched, hands gliding over her body before she dropped to her knees right as the last note played.
The section erupted.
“Hell yeah!”
“New girl got it!”
“Take my whole wallet, ma!”
Nova stood up, breathing heavy, a small shy smile breaking through as she quickly gathered the money scattered around the stage. Her hands were still shaking, but this time it was from adrenaline and something close to pride.
She gave the crowd a soft wave and disappeared behind the curtain.
Backstage
The second she stepped into the dressing room, Shay and a couple of the other girls clapped.
“Alright, Nova!” Shay grinned. “First night and you already got them throwing big faces? Not bad, baby. Not bad at all.”
Jasmine rushed over and pulled her into a tight hug. “Bitch, you killed that! I told you! The way you was moving… I was proud as hell.”
Ciara laughed breathlessly, still in shock. “I can’t believe I actually did it. I thought I was gon’ pass out up there.”
Shay handed her a bottle of water. “You did good. Real good. That quiet, sensual thing you got? They love that shit. Keep doing what you did tonight and you gon’ eat.”
Ciara sat down at her station and started counting her tips. Her eyes widened as she flipped through the bills.
“Almost eight hundred dollars…” she whispered in disbelief. “In one set.”
Jasmine screamed quietly. “That’s what I’m talking about! First night and you already making bank. This the beginning, Ci. For real.”
Ciara smiled down at the money, tears pricking her eyes for a second. This was the most she had made in one night in her entire life. It didn’t erase the fear or the past, but it felt like the first real step toward standing on her own.
Back at the booth, Jimmy couldn’t stop watching the stage even after Nova disappeared behind the curtain.
Jey raised an eyebrow. “Twin, you still staring at the curtain like she gon’ pop back out. You good?”
Jimmy took a slow sip of his drink, then set it down. “I want a private dance with her.”
Solo and Jacob both started laughing.
“Oh shit,” Jacob said. “Uce really said that with no hesitation.”
Jey smirked. “You sure? Thought you wasn’t doing ‘wild shit’ tonight?”
Jimmy shrugged, eyes still on the backstage entrance. “It’s just a dance. She different though. I wanna see more of that energy up close.”
He flagged down a waitress and told her what he wanted. A few minutes later, she came back.
“Nova’s finishing up. She’ll meet you in Room 5 in ten minutes.”
Jimmy nodded, leaning back in his seat. His cousins kept teasing him, but he barely heard them.
Something about the way she moved — that mix of nervous and confident, quiet but magnetic — had him curious in a way he hadn’t been in a long time.
He was ready to see if that spark was real.
Room 5 was smaller and more intimate than Ciara expected. Soft purple lighting, a plush black couch against the wall, and a single pole in the center of the room. The music from the main floor was muted but still audible — slow and sensual.
She had changed into a fresh black lace set with a matching robe. Her hands were shaking again as she waited. This was different from the stage. This was up close. Personal.
A light knock came on the door.
“Come in,” she said softly.
Jimmy Uso stepped inside, closing the door behind him. He was taller than she expected, tattoos visible under his fitted black shirt, his presence filling the room. Their eyes met.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
“You’re Nova, right?” Jimmy asked, his voice deep and smooth as he sat down on the couch.
Ciara nodded, trying to steady her breathing. “Yeah… first night doing private dances too.”
Jimmy gave her a small, easy smile. “I can tell. You looked nervous on stage… but you still killed it.”
She blushed under the low lights. “You saw me?”
“I did,” he said, leaning back. “Couldn’t take my eyes off you. Something about the way you move… it’s different. Not like everybody else out there.”
Ciara felt her heart skip. She stepped closer, standing between his legs. The song changed to a slow, moody R&B track.
“I don’t really know what I’m doing yet,” she admitted quietly. “But I’ll try to make it worth your time.”
She let the robe slip off her shoulders and started moving.
Her hips rolled slowly to the beat, hands trailing down her body. She turned, giving him a view of her back and the curve of her waist as she bent low, then came back up, hair swinging with the motion. Jimmy’s eyes followed every movement, dark and focused.
She danced closer, straddling his lap without fully sitting, rolling her hips in a slow grind that matched the music. Their faces were inches apart now. She could smell his cologne — clean and expensive.
Jimmy’s hands stayed at his sides, respecting the rules, but his gaze never left her face.
“You got a real name?” he asked, voice low.
Ciara hesitated, then whispered, “Ciara.”
“Pretty,” he said. “I’m Jimmy.”
She kept dancing, but something about saying her real name to him felt… intimate. She spun slowly, pressing her back against his chest for a moment, letting her hair brush his shoulder before turning to face him again.
Jimmy swallowed hard. “You nervous?”
“A little,” she breathed, still moving. “This is all new to me.”
“You don’t seem new,” he replied, eyes locked on hers. “You got this quiet fire. Makes a man curious.”
Ciara felt heat rush through her body. No one had ever looked at her like that — not Leon, not anyone. It wasn’t just lust. There was something deeper in the way he watched her.
The song ended, but she kept moving for a few more seconds, slower, softer. When she finally stepped back, both of them were breathing heavier.
Jimmy reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick stack of bills, handing it to her.
“You earned every bit of this,” he said. “And then some.”
Ciara took the money with slightly shaky hands. “Thank you, Jimmy.”
He stood up, towering over her. For a moment they just stood there, eyes locked.
“I might have to come see you again, Ciara,” he said, voice low. “If that’s alright with you.”
She looked up at him, heart racing. “Yeah… I think I’d like that.”
He gave her one last lingering look, then left the room.
Ciara stood there for a long second after the door closed, touching her lips like she could still feel the tension in the air.
Backstage, she counted the money from the private dance.
Another $600.
She sat down, staring at the cash in her hands, her mind replaying everything.
One private dance… and she already couldn’t stop thinking about him.
ೀ
Jimmy walked back to the booth with a slight smirk he couldn’t hide. His cousins and twin were already looking at him expectantly.
Jey leaned forward first. “So? How was it, Uce?”
Jimmy sat down, shaking his head with a low chuckle. “Man… she different.”
Solo laughed. “Different how? You look like you saw a ghost.”
“She got this quiet energy,” Jimmy explained, taking a sip of his drink. “Not loud, not trying too hard. But when she dances… it’s like she pulls you in. Her name’s Ciara. Real name. She was nervous as hell but still killed it.”
Jacob raised his eyebrows. “You got her real name? Already? Damn, twin. She must’ve really left an impression.”
Jey smirked, nudging his brother. “You feeling her, huh? I saw the way you were staring at her on stage. You ain’t even been looking at your phone since she came out.”
Jimmy leaned back, staring toward the stage even though she wasn’t on it anymore. “I don’t know, man. She just… caught my attention. Something about her feels real. Not like the usual girls in here chasing clout.”
Solo took a shot. “Well, you better be careful. You got a girl at home, remember?”
Jimmy didn’t reply right away. He just nodded slowly, but his mind kept replaying the way Ciara looked at him during the dance — nervous, but with that spark in her eyes.
“Yeah… I know,” he said quietly.
But deep down, he already knew he’d be back to see her again.
Back in the dressing room, Ciara had changed into her robe and was sitting with Jasmine, still buzzing from everything.
Jasmine was practically bouncing. “Okay, spill! How was the private dance? Was he fine? Did he try anything?”
Ciara let out a shaky laugh, still counting the rest of her tips. “He was… really fine, Jas. Tall, tattoos, deep voice. His name is Jimmy. He was respectful though. Hands to himself the whole time.”
Jasmine leaned in closer. “And? How did it feel dancing for him up close?”
“It was intense,” Ciara admitted, biting her lip. “I was so nervous at first, but once I started moving… I don’t know. It felt different with him. He kept looking at me like he was really seeing me. Not just my body. We even talked a little. I told him my real name.”
Jasmine’s eyes widened. “You never tell them your real name! He must’ve really got to you.”
“He did,” Ciara said softly, staring at the money in her hands. “He said I had this ‘quiet fire.’ And he tipped me really good… like six hundred just for the private.”
Jasmine screamed quietly and hugged her. “That’s my best friend! First night and you already got somebody like that requesting you? Girl, this might be your glow up season for real.”
Ciara smiled, but there was a nervous flutter in her chest. “I don’t know… something about him feels dangerous. Like if I’m not careful, I could get attached. I just left one messed up situation. I can’t afford to catch feelings right now.”
Jasmine rubbed her back. “Then don’t rush anything. Just get this money and see what happens. But if he comes back… at least enjoy the attention. You deserve to feel wanted, Ci.”
Ciara nodded, thinking back to Jimmy’s eyes on her.
She had a feeling this wasn’t going to be the last time she saw him.
The rest of the night moved in a blur for Ciara.
After the private dance with Jimmy, she went back on stage for one more short set. The crowd had thinned out a bit, but the energy was still there. She danced a little more confidently this time, the nerves slowly fading with every song. By the end of her last set, more tips had piled up on the stage.
Back in the dressing room, she finally sat down to count everything.
Jasmine had already left to go home, but she promised to pick Ciara up whenever she was ready. Shay walked by every now and then, checking on the new girls.
Ciara stacked all the bills neatly on the counter. Ones, fives, twenties… and the thick roll Jimmy had given her.
She added it all up slowly, eyes growing wider with every hundred.
“Twelve hundred and eighty dollars…” she whispered to herself in disbelief.
Her hands shook as she stared at the money. In one single night, she had made more than she used to make in two weeks at any regular job. Tears stung her eyes for a second. This was real. She was actually doing it.
She wiped her face quickly and started packing her things into her duffle bag — heels, outfits, the robe, and the money tucked safely into a small zipper pocket. Her body was tired, but her mind was wide awake.
Just as she zipped up her bag, she heard a knock on the wall outside her station.
“Nova?” Shay’s voice called out.
Ciara looked up. “Yes?”
Shay leaned against the wall with a proud smirk on her face. “Girl, you did really good tonight. For a first night? I’m impressed. You got them boys throwing money like it’s nothing. Keep that same energy and you gon’ be just fine here.”
Ciara smiled shyly. “Thank you. I was so nervous… but I’m glad it went okay.”
Shay nodded toward the hallway. “Somebody wants to see you before you leave. He’s waiting near the side exit. Looks like you already got a regular.”
Ciara’s heart skipped. She already knew who it was.
She threw on a hoodie over her outfit, grabbed her bag, and followed Shay down the hall. Her clear heels clicked against the floor as they walked. When they turned the corner, Jimmy was standing there, hands in his pockets, looking even finer under the dim lighting.
He straightened up when he saw her.
“I’ll leave y’all to it,” Shay said with a knowing smile before walking off.
Ciara stopped a few feet away from him, adjusting the strap on her bag. “Hey… you came back.”
Jimmy gave her that same easy, charming smile. “Couldn’t leave without saying goodnight. You killed it out there tonight, Ciara. For real.”
She looked down for a second, feeling the warmth in her cheeks. “Thank you. I still can’t believe I made it through the whole night.”
“You did more than make it through,” he said, stepping a little closer. “You stood out. I had to come tell you that before you left.”
The hallway felt smaller with him standing there. The tension from the private room was still lingering between them.
Ciara bit her lip. “I appreciate it, Jimmy. Tonight was… a lot. But you made it a little easier.”
He looked like he wanted to say more, but instead he just nodded toward the exit. “You got a ride home?”
“Yeah, my best friend is coming to get me.”
“Good.” He paused, then added, “I’ll probably be back soon. If that’s cool with you.”
Ciara met his eyes. “It is.”
Jimmy gave her one last long look, like he was memorizing her face, then stepped back. “Get home safe, Ciara.”
Before Ciara could respond, her phone buzzed. Jasmine was outside.
“I gotta go. My ride’s here,” she said softly.
Jimmy nodded, stepping back to give her space. “Get home safe, Ciara.”
“You too, Jimmy.”
She walked out the side exit, heart still racing, and climbed into Jasmine’s car.
Jasmine immediately turned the music down and looked at her. “Okay, how was the rest of the night? You look like you got a story.”
Ciara let out a big breath and smiled tiredly. “Jas… I made twelve hundred and eighty dollars tonight. First night.”
Jasmine screamed and reached over to hug her while still parked. “I knew it! I’m so proud of you, bestie! You did that!”
As Jasmine started driving, Ciara told her everything — the second set, how the crowd reacted, and the private dance with Jimmy.
“He came back at the end too,” Ciara said. “He was waiting for me before I left. Told me I killed it and that he’ll probably be back soon.”
Jasmine glanced at her with a raised eyebrow. “And how do you feel about that?”
“I don’t know…” Ciara stared out the window. “He seems nice. Respectful. But the way he looks at me… it makes me nervous. In a good way. I told him my real name, Jas.”
Jasmine sucked her teeth. “Already? Girl, you moving fast. Just be careful, okay? Get your money, stay focused. You just left Leon. Don’t let nobody distract you from building your new life.”
“I know,” Ciara said quietly. “I’m not trying to catch feelings. I just want to be stable. But tonight… it felt good. I felt wanted. Powerful.”
They pulled up to Ciara’s apartment. Jasmine put the car in park and gave her a serious look.
“You did amazing. Go count that money again, take a hot shower, and get some rest. We’ll talk more tomorrow. I love you.”
“I love you too. Thank you for everything.”
Ciara got out, waved goodbye, and went inside. She dropped her bag, showered, and climbed into bed. As she stared at the ceiling, the night replayed in her head — the stage lights, the money, Jimmy’s eyes on her during the private dance.
She whispered to herself, “You’re really doing this, Ciara.”
But even as she tried to focus on her goals, she couldn’t stop thinking about when she might see Jimmy again.

novacane ⟢ ep1
Nashville, Tennessee - Ciara and Leon’s house.
She didn’t look back once when she stormed out the front door running for her life away from the person she thought she loved the most, but in reality that was a lie and a really bad lie that she told herself.
She only had time to pack only a few little things before running out the house and towards her car, hands shaking violently as she unlocked her car door slamming it shut as she had seen her now ex boyfriend running up towards her door banging on it like a maniac.
Trying to open her car door almost breaking the handle off—scaring her half to death.
“Open this fucking door Ciara! Or imma bust this fucking window open my damn self!” Leon barked, eyes filled with nothing but pure anger.
“You fucking bitch! You gon leave me!?Where you gon’ go Ci? Huh!? You need me! You fucking need me!”
Banging on the window, hooting and hollering at her.
She looked at him one last time before starting the engine of her Honda Civic pulling out from the driveway of their house—the same house she and he wanted to build a life together until things started to get worse once she found out he cheated on her with some random girl he met.
And she tried and tried to tell herself that he’ll change and never do it again.
But what does he do?
He cheats on her like she didn’t mean shit to him.
And when she went to confront him about it, it always turned into a fight or him putting his hands on her like he did just a few seconds ago, she couldn’t take it anymore.
She placed her car in drive, almost hitting him and drove off—she didn’t know where she was going to go but it had to be far away from here and away from him.
Tears poured down her face making her vision blurred as she wiped her tears away from her face quickly while focusing on the road ahead, her body shaking violently trying to control her breathing and kept driving.
ೀ
Atlanta, Georgia.
Ciara didn’t know how long she was driving but she continued driving only stopping to get some gas one time and kept pushing not looking back. She had made it to the nearest city that was close to Tennessee and that was Atlanta Georgia, she didn’t really know anywhere from there except for her best friend Jasmine.
Her phone kept blowing up text after text from Leon, hell even twenty missed calls from him but she didn’t dare to reach for her phone to see what he was saying.
She glanced over at her rearview mirror seeing the bruise on her left eye that he had left her with when backhand the fuck outta her that made her leave—but she had more bruises from him it wasn’t just the one on her left eye.
Lucky for her she saved enough money to get her something of her own just for now until she got back on her feet, she drove to her best friend’s house since she’s the only person she knows.
The music was playing in the background of her car on low so she could listen to her thoughts, feeling tired and mentally exhausted. She thought if she didn’t leave what would’ve happened?
Would he have put his hands on her some more until she was bleeding from his actions or end up doing something worse than what she thought.
Ciara made a left turn heading down the street to her best friend’s house. It was only two-thirty in the morning since she left from Tennessee to Atlanta, when she pulled into her best friend’s driveway she immediately grabbed her phone to call her.
She placed her phone near her ear, heading it, begging that her best friend would answer the phone by biting down on her finger nail as the phone kept ringing.
“Please pick up Jasmine…please.” Ciara whispered.
And that’s when she heard her best friend’s voice behind the phone voice groggy from sleep.
“Hello?” Jasmine answered.
She could feel her eyes getting glassy and her voice cracking. “J-jasmine…? I’m outside…can you open the door?”
She could hear her best friend sitting up immediately through the phone.
“What you mean your outside Ci? What happened?” she asked.
She sniffed. “I drove down here…alone only bringing what I can and I left him Jasmine.”
“Leon? You left Leon? Hold on, let me go unlock the door downstairs okay?”
“Okay.” With that the phone call had ended as she turned off the engine of her car—grabbing her things that she was able to bring along with her phone.
She shut the door behind her, locking her door while throwing her bag over her shoulders, already hearing the door unlocking as she and Jasmine made eye contact with each other—which made her run up towards her and hug her.
Ciara started breaking down immediately in her arms feeling Jasmine rubbing her back.
“It’s okay Ci, I’m here. I am here for you.”
She pulled Ciara inside of the house, shutting the door behind them, taking Ciara inside of the living room so she could sit down while Jasmine went inside of the kitchen to get her something to drink.
When she came back she opened the bottle of water passing it to her as Ciara drank the cold water feeling it go down her body like she needed it badly.
Jasmine came and sat next to her with her face full of concern, when she looked at Ciara’s face and her body her expression changed.
She grabbed her chin to get a better look at the bruise on her eye.
“He did this to you? Leon did this to you?” Jasmine asked.
Ciara felt embarrassed to say but nodded her head.
She heard her best friend scoff. “I knew that bastard wasn’t no good for you the moment he started acting all funny and shit when did this happen?”
Ciara didn’t want to relive the moment where he backhanded her with his hand and yanked her hair making her feel scared for her life.
“It happened after I confronted him for cheating and things went left—he started yanking on my hair and…” Ciara paused for a moment. “We kept going back and forth with each other until he had enough and backhanded me in my face leaving a whole bruise on my face.”
Her best friend’s expression softened hearing that pulling her into a hug.
“I’m so sorry that you had to go through that Ci, but I’m glad that you escaped from that shit who knows what would’ve happened if you didn’t, I’m proud of you okay?” Ciara smiled lightly, feeling herself getting sleepy.
She yawned.
“Look, we will talk about this later on in the morning okay? I need you to get some sleep alright? If you need anything I’m upstairs.” She said.
“Okay, thank you for letting me stay.”
“Of course, you’re my best friend, you know I got’chu.”
With that Jasmine had gotten up from the couch heading towards the stairs as Ciara watched her walk up the stairs as she wasn’t in her sight anymore—she grabbed her phone as it turned on seeing the twenty missed calls from Leon and messages from him as well.
20+ messages and missed calls from Leon❤️
She read every single message that had popped up from her notifications.
Leon❤️: where tf are u Ci? Huh? Leon❤️: yk that no other nigga would want you other than me you’re so insecure like literally insecure Leon❤️: hell I should’ve cheated on you some more Leon❤️: should’ve beat you some more Leon❤️: yk I didn’t mean it right? Leon❤️: the girl I was with she was so much prettier than u you’ll never find nobody else like me Ci you’re worthless always complaining, whining, so insecure about everything no nigga wants to deal with that and insecure bitch like u
She immediately felt tears coming down her cheeks reading his message. It hit her like a bullet hard, covering her mouth sobbing quietly.
He always knew how to make her feel worthless just to have her apologize and come back to him like an idiot but this time she didn’t. With trembling hands she went towards his contact number scrolling down until she saw the block button and clicked on it.
Blocking his number.
And deleting his contact number off her phone.
Ciara had curled up in a ball with her head between her legs crying softly as she kept replaying his messages over and over again in her head—started to believe everything that he was saying.
Only breaking her own heart some more.
“Maybe he’s right…maybe no one wants to deal with me and maybe I’m just not pretty enough…” Ciara whispered.
Sniffing her nose as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Maybe I won’t find love ever again….im just unlucky.” She said softly before getting comfortable on the couch.
She laid on her back against the soft cushion of the couch as she threw the blanket over her body—staring up at the ceiling watching the ceiling fan spinning around.
Her eyes began to feel heavy fighting the urge to stay up but her body was exhausted from the running and driving around, crying her eyes out. So she closed her eyes letting her chest go up and down letting her body relax.
And when her body relaxed, she fell asleep
Forgetting about everything.
And when she woke up it was going to be a fresh new start for her.
ೀ
As the morning creeped by the sunlight from the sun was beaming through the curtains in the living room and the birds chirping in the background outside, Ciara had slept through the rest of the night with her face being buried in the pillow in her favorite position that made her body look like a number four.
Jasmine had already come downstairs seeing her best friend knocked out cold on her couch which made her chuckle as she walked inside of the kitchen to cook them some breakfast, gathering all the necessary ingredients and seasonings from the fridge.
As she cracked the eggs into the pan, ensuring there were enough for both of them, she began sprinkling her seasonings on top before scrambling them in the pot—she added some shredded cheese to elevate the flavor of the eggs.
Once the eggs were cooked, she covered them with a plate and placed them in the oven while she started preparing some sausage and French toast for them—she had been craving French toast for quite some time.
Meanwhile Ciara stirred from her sleep, awakened by the enticing aroma of the breakfast she was making. Rubbing her eyes, stretching her body, yawning heavily. And checked her phone not seeing any new notifications.
That made her heart feel less heavy than it was yesterday.
She had seen her best friend finish cooking them their favorite breakfast to eat that her best friend's mother used to make whenever she came over when they were kids.
She rose from the couch heading towards the kitchen catching Jasmine's attention.
“Good morning bestie, I hope you slept well. Cause girl you were knocked out cold.” Jasmine said.
“I wasn’t snoring was I?” Ciara asked.
Jasmine chuckled, shaking her head. “No girl, you was just sleeping peacefully.”
Something she’s been needing for a while now.
“Yeah, it was very much needed.” She pulled the chair back from the table to sit down waiting on her breakfast.
Jasmine turned off the stove grabbing both of their plates as she walked towards Ciara’s direction placing her plate in front of her that was filled with scrambled eggs, sausages and French toast that made her mouth water.
She saw Jasmine sitting next to her turning on their favorite TV show on Netflix in the kitchen while eating their food together.
While they were watching TV they had both laughed at whatever the person had said on the TV, munching away.
It felt like weight over her shoulders was gone but still lingering around but that didn’t matter because she was with her best friend.
That’s when Jasmine began to speak. “So Ci, you wanna start looking for apartments. I know some good ones around here.”
She read the mind like a book.
“Yeah, we can. I do have enough money saved up to get an apartment…I wanna have my own shit you know?” Ciara replied while eating her French toast.
Jasmine nodded her head.
“I understand bestie, we can start looking for some apartments after breakfast and then see if we could get a tour of the places because you know most apartments are.” She said.
That made her chuckle, mouth stuffed with food. “Yeah, I know girl.”
After that they both continued to eat breakfast together along with watching TV, Ciara completely forgetting about whatever happened yesterday between her and Leon.
All she could think about was how much she felt safe around her, the only person she could trust, if she would’ve gone back to her family they would’ve told her to work things out with him.
Being sheltered all her life, not being able to go anywhere, not being able to experience the world or learn anything about being an adult—her parents kept her sheltered which caused her to be the way she is now.
The quiet type that doesn’t do big crowds and overthinks everything, being a girl who felt insecure about how she looked and compared herself to others without any reassurance or validation.
She barely got any from Leon.
And she met Leon through one of her father’s best friends, assumed that they would be the perfect couple but no.
Ciara had really bad daddy issues.
Until she met Jasmine all of that changed her and Jasmine clicked immediately and started doing things together. Hell even teaching her how to drive, teaching her all the normal adult things that her people should’ve taught her.
But they felt like she didn’t need to know any of that thinking that she’ll always depend on them.
She proved them wrong when she moved out of the house to be with Leon.
Now that’s changed.
Jasmine cleared their plates by putting them inside of the dishwasher for them to get cleaned before going back inside or grabbing her laptop that was on the counter—opening it up.
“Alright girly, let’s start finding you some good apartments.” Jasmine said.
ೀ
After getting a tour of a few apartments Ciara had finally decided which one she wanted to move in the most and the first option caught her attention. It was perfect for her.
One bedroom apartment just for her and her alone, having her own space without feeling overcrowded in her own space. It was needed after living with Leon for a whole year or two until this happened.
With the money she had saved she managed to move into her new apartment and whatever she had left over was going to go to groceries and furniture. Making sure that she was straight for the rest of the day.
Ciara and Jasmine had ordered her furniture online which would take a couple of days or weeks so until then they went to the store to look for an air mattress for now and some other things.
Candles
Incense
Decorations
Groceries
Pillows/ Blankets
That was on the checklist for right now as they had gotten everything from the store with the help of Jasmine’s older brother Jersey who was helping them carry all the bags inside of her new apartment on the lower floor.
Putting all of the groceries up one by one in the refrigerator as Jasmine lit up one of the incense inside of the house to make the smell good.
Jersey had placed her Japanese floor mattress on the floor inside of her room that down the hallway to his left, the bed had LED light underneath the bottom of the mattress—he wrapped the LED lights they had bought from the store all over her room wiping the sweat from his face.
Once he placed them all around her room he grabbed the remote to turn on the lights just to make sure they work and they saw the room bright up almost instantly.
“A’ight, the led lights are working Ci!” Jersey shouted.
“Okay!” Ciara shouted back.
She checked how much money she had left in her account and to her surprise she had enough money to cover for rent for next week but she had to start looking for jobs soon if she wanted to keep a roof over her head.
She and Jasmine had started putting up the decorations in her living room making it more homely for her, they put up the paintings, pictures, and a home sign on her wall.
Jasmine wiped her hands down, placing them in her hips.
“Well, this place is already starting to look good Ci.” she said.
She looked around her place seeing everything coming together so fast and so quickly.
“Yeah, everything is coming together just taking it one day at a time you know?”
“I get it honestly, you’re starting over. starting fresh after leaving that piece of shit I still can’t believe he did that to you.”
Ciara placed her hand underneath her chin, sighing deeply. “Blame my parents for hooking us up.”
“I can’t stand your parents either, no shade.”
Jasmine hated Ciara’s parents heavily with her heart for treating their daughter like a punching bag and then hooked her up with someone’s son she barely knew about.
She always told her that Leon wasn’t a good man all the time but Ciara didn’t want to hear any of that nonsense just because she was deeply in love with him.
Until Ciara had called her one night crying saying that Leon had cheated on her with some girl he met at the club when he was out with his boys.
She told her to leave not once but twice did she listen to her?
No she didn’t and the same thing kept happening and happening up until now.
“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you, if I would’ve listened to you I wouldn’t be here in the first place.” Ciara apologized.
Jasmine shook her head giving her a light smile.
“Girl, you were mad in love with him and I wasn’t to force you to leave someone if you were ready.”
“I mean—“ she cut in. “Ci, none of that matters anymore. What matters is that you have your own shit and far away from him you hear me?”
She nodded her head as she and Jasmine hugged each other.
“I love you okay? If you need anything I’m here.” She said softly.
“I love you too.”
With that they continued with the rest of their day fixing up Ciara’s apartment the best way they could until all of her furniture arrived soon, that’s when the real fun starts.
After fixing up her apartment she had cooked dinner for Jersey and Jasmine while the both of them were fighting over the remote to pick what movie to watch as Ciara looked at the two siblings and shook her head grabbing the remote from the both of them.
“You guys suck at picking a movie.” Ciara said.
“Says the person who likes to watch the same movie over and over again just to watch the sex scenes.” Jasmine clapped back.
Ciara gave her the middle finger while munching on her food.
“365 days is a good movie!” she responded.
Jasmine and Jersey laughed at her as they finally picked out what movie they wanted to watch together—they laughed at whatever the person said to the other person in the movie.
They all finished their food placing them inside of Ciara’s dishwasher before heading back over to the living sitting on the floor bundled up in the blankets they had bought from the store.
Whenever a sex scene came up on the screen Ciara would cover her face up with the blanket or cover her ears not wanting to hear the moans and grunts coming from the TV.
She never had sex before, not even with Leon.
So seeing these scenes made her all shy and embarrassed.
“Ciara? Are you really hiding your face?”
“Yes? Is that even a question?”
“Bitch, they’re just sex scenes. you acting like you've never had sex before.”
Ciara didn’t say anything. She just pulled the blanket higher over her face, cheeks burning hotter than the food she’d just finished. The exaggerated moans from the TV filled the living room, making her shift uncomfortably on the floor.
Jasmine cackled, nudging her with her foot. “Bitch, you really hiding? It’s just a movie!”
Jersey shook his head, grinning as he reached for another handful of popcorn. “Leave her alone, Jas. Not everybody built like you.”
Ciara finally lowered the blanket just enough to glare at both of them. “I’m not hiding. I’m… respecting the art,” she mumbled, which only made them laugh harder.
The truth was simpler and more embarrassing: she had never had sex. Not with Leon. Not with anyone. He had always pushed, always complained, always made her feel like something was wrong with her for not being ready. And after a while, the fights about it became just another reason for him to put his hands on her. So she stayed a virgin—quiet, untouched, and ashamed of it.=
The movie kept playing, but Ciara’s mind drifted. Tomorrow she’d have to start looking for work. Her savings were already disappearing faster than she expected. Rent, groceries, utilities… it all added up. She couldn’t keep depending on Jasmine and Jersey forever.
The next few days blurred together.
Ciara spent her mornings filling out applications—waitressing, retail, cleaning—anything that would give her quick money. Most places wanted experience she didn’t have or couldn’t hire her fast enough. Evenings were spent unpacking the rest of her furniture when it finally arrived and trying not to think about Leon’s blocked number.
One night, while scrolling through job listings on her phone, Jasmine walked in with a knowing look.
“Still nothing?” she asked, plopping down on the couch beside her.
Ciara shook her head. “Everything either pays trash or wants me to start next month. I need something now.”
Jasmine chewed on her lip for a second, then sighed. “Look… I wasn’t gonna say anything unless you asked, but there’s this club. It’s high-end. The girls there make in one good night what you’d make in two weeks at a regular job. It’s not easy work, but it’s fast money and they’re always hiring dancers.”
Ciara froze. “A strip club?”
“Yeah. It’s called Eclipse. The owner doesn’t play about safety—bouncers, cameras, strict rules. A lot of girls there are just trying to survive too. No pressure, but… you’re beautiful, Ci. Quiet energy like yours? Some dudes eat that up. You wouldn’t even have to do full nudity if you don’t want to.”
Ciara stared at the floor. The idea made her stomach twist. She had spent her whole life being sheltered, hidden, controlled. Now the thought of getting on stage and being seen—really seen—terrified her.
But the fear of going back to nothing, of failing at starting over, terrified her more.
“I’ll think about it,” she whispered.
Jasmine nodded and didn’t push. “Just know you got options. And whatever you choose, I got your back.”
That night, Ciara barely slept. She kept replaying Jasmine’s words. By morning, she had made up her mind.
She needed to survive.
ೀ
The next morning, sunlight poured through the curtains of Ciara’s new apartment, casting a soft glow across the living room. She woke up with a knot already twisting in her stomach. The conversation with Jasmine from the night before kept replaying in her head like a loop she couldn’t pause.
*Strip club.*
*Audition.*
*Fast money.*
She stared at the ceiling for a long moment before dragging herself out of bed. After a quick shower, she threw on an oversized hoodie and leggings. Jasmine showed up shortly after with coffee and a determined look on her face.
“Morning, bestie. You still thinking about it?” Jasmine asked, handing her a cup.
Ciara nodded slowly, taking a sip. “Yeah… I am. I don’t know if I can actually do it, but I need the money. Bad.”
Jasmine gave her a soft smile. “Then let’s go shopping. Even if you just audition, you’ll need something to wear. Nothing too crazy — just something that makes you feel confident. We can look, no pressure.”
Ciara hesitated, then agreed. The two of them headed out to the mall, the Atlanta heat already warming the air as they walked through the parking lot.
As they moved from store to store, Ciara’s mind wandered. She tried on a few simple outfits — cute tops, jeans, and some comfortable heels — but her thoughts kept drifting back to the club. What would it feel like to be on stage? Under bright lights? Strangers watching her every move? The idea made her hands tremble as she held up a black bodysuit in the dressing room mirror.
She looked at her reflection. The bruise on her eye had faded into a faint shadow she could cover with makeup, but the ones inside still felt fresh. Could she really do this? Could quiet, reserved Ciara — the girl who had been sheltered her whole life — get on a stage and dance for money?
Jasmine knocked lightly on the dressing room door. “How’s that one looking?”
Ciara stepped out, tugging at the bodysuit. It hugged her curves in a way that made her feel exposed but… powerful. Different.
“Damn, Ci,” Jasmine said, eyes widening. “You look good. Like, really good.”
Ciara turned side to side in the mirror, biting her lip. “It’s… a lot. What if I freeze up? What if they laugh at me?”
“They won’t,” Jasmine said firmly. “And if you hate it after the audition, you never have to go back. But at least you’ll know. Plus, I’ll go with you if you want. Moral support in the car.”
Ciara stared at herself again. The girl in the mirror looked scared… but she also looked like someone who was tired of running and hiding. Tired of having nothing.
She took a deep breath. “Okay. I’ll audition. Today.”
Jasmine’s face lit up with pride. “That’s my girl. Let’s get this, a couple more pieces, and some makeup to cover that last bit of bruise. You got this, Ci. One step at a time.”
They finished shopping — adding lingerie-style pieces, a sleek robe for stage presence, and some clear heels that made Ciara feel taller than she ever had. Every item felt like both armor and a risk.
On the drive back to the apartment, Ciara’s leg bounced nervously. Her mind raced with questions.
What song would she dance to? How much would she have to take off? Could she really move the way the other girls probably did?
But underneath the fear was something else — a small, quiet spark of determination.
She had already escaped one nightmare. Maybe she could survive this one too.
When they got home, Ciara laid the new clothes out on her bed and stared at them. Tonight, she would audition at Eclipse.
And nothing would ever be the same.
The sun had already started to set by the time they left the apartment. Ciara sat in the passenger seat of Jasmine’s car, hands clasped tightly in her lap, the new outfit folded neatly in a bag at her feet. The black bodysuit, sheer robe, and clear heels felt heavier than they should have.
The drive to Eclipse was quiet at first. City lights blurred past the window as Jasmine merged onto the highway. Ciara’s heart beat so loud she was sure her best friend could hear it.
“You good over there?” Jasmine asked, glancing at her.
Ciara swallowed hard. “I’m scared,” she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. “What if I’m not good enough? What if they take one look at me and laugh?”
Jasmine reached over and squeezed her hand. “Then they’re idiots and we leave. But I’ve seen you dance in your room when you think nobody’s watching. You got something, Ci. Quiet… but sexy. Mysterious. That’s rare.”
Ciara gave a small, nervous laugh. “I dance like nobody’s watching because nobody is watching. This is different. People are gonna be staring. Judging.”
“Yeah, but they’re also gonna be paying,” Jasmine reminded her gently. “And you don’t have to be loud or extra up there. Just be you. Move how the music makes you feel. The right ones will feel it.”
The rest of the drive was filled with soft music playing from the radio. Ciara tried to breathe through the anxiety. Every red light felt like a chance to turn back. Every green light pushed her closer to the unknown.
Fifteen minutes later, Jasmine pulled into the parking lot of Eclipse. Even from the outside, the club looked upscale. Black and deep purple lighting glowed against the building. A large neon sign spelled out the name in elegant script. A few cars were scattered in the lot — mostly staff, since it was still early.
Jasmine parked near the side entrance. “You ready?”
Ciara stared at the building for a long second, then nodded. “Let’s go before I change my mind.”
They walked in together. The inside was dim but clean. The main stage was lit with soft purple and blue lights, poles gleaming under the spotlights. A few girls were practicing on side stages while staff set up for the night. The faint smell of perfume, alcohol, and cleaning products hung in the air.
A tall, muscular bouncer with a clipboard nodded at them. “Audition?”
“Yeah,” Jasmine answered for her. “This is Ciara.”
He looked Ciara up and down, not in a creepy way — more like he was sizing up whether she could handle the environment. “Boss is in the back office. Go down the hall, second door on the left. He’s expecting walk-ins tonight.”
Ciara’s legs felt like jelly as they walked down the hallway. Her grip on the bag tightened. When they reached the office door, she took one last deep breath.
Jasmine gave her a quick hug. “I’ll be right out here. You got this.”
Ciara knocked softly.
“Come in,” a deep voice called.
She stepped inside. A man in his late 30s sat behind a desk — dark skin, sharp fade, expensive watch. He looked up from his laptop and gave her a professional once-over.
“You here to audition?” he asked.
“Yes, sir,” Ciara said quietly, trying to keep her voice steady.
He leaned back in his chair. “Name?”
“Ciara.”
“First time dancing?”
She nodded.
“Alright, Ciara. I’m Marcus — owner of Eclipse. We keep it classy here. No touching the girls. No extras in the back. You follow the rules, you stay safe, you make money. Simple. You got a song picked out?”
“I… I was thinking ‘Spin’ by Megan Thee Stallion,” she said softly.
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a small smirk forming. “Interesting choice. Intimate. Alright. Go get changed. You’ve got ten minutes, then come out to the main stage. We’ll see what you got.”
Ciara thanked him and stepped out, legs shaking as Jasmine helped her to the dressing room.
She changed into the black bodysuit, slipped on the clear heels, and stared at herself in the mirror. The girl looking back looked like a stranger — beautiful, terrified, and on the edge of something new.
Jasmine fixed her hair and dabbed a little extra concealer on the fading bruise.
“Remember,” Jasmine whispered, “this is just a stage. You’re not giving them all of you. Just enough to survive.”
Ciara closed her eyes, nodded, and whispered to herself:
“I survived Leon. I can survive this.”
She stepped out of the dressing room, heart pounding, and walked toward the main stage.
The audition was about to begin.
Ciara’s heart hammered against her ribs as she stepped onto the main stage. The lights were brighter than she expected, casting a soft purple hue over the polished floor and the gleaming pole. A few girls lingered near the bar, watching casually. Marcus sat in a booth near the front, arms crossed, waiting.
She handed her phone to the DJ with trembling fingers. “Spin by Megan Thee Stallion, please.”
The beat dropped.
At first, Ciara froze. The bass vibrated through her body, but her legs felt locked. For three long seconds, she stood there, the weight of every insecurity crashing down on her. What am I doing? This isn’t me.
Then the chorus hit.
She closed her eyes for a moment, remembering Jasmine’s words. Just move how the music makes you feel.
Her hips started to sway — slow at first, testing the rhythm. The clear heels clicked against the stage as she found her balance. She let her hands glide down her sides, feeling the fabric of the bodysuit, then gripped the pole with one hand.
The nerves didn’t disappear, but something shifted.
She began to spin — a slow, controlled rotation around the pole, back arching just enough to show the curve of her waist and hips. Her movements were not loud or aggressive like some of the other girls she’d seen practicing. They were smooth. Fluid. Almost hypnotic. Quiet confidence mixed with the heavy bass of “Spin.”
As the song built, she grew bolder. She dropped low into a squat, thighs flexing, then rolled her hips in a slow, sensual circle that made the robe slip off one shoulder. She didn’t force the twerk — instead, she let it come naturally on the beat, controlled but powerful, her body moving like she was releasing months of tension, fear, and anger.
Every spin, every body roll, every time her hands trailed over her own skin — it felt like she was proving something to herself.
I'm not worthless.
I'm not broken.
I can survive.
The song hit its final chorus. Ciara climbed the pole slightly, legs wrapping as she leaned back, hair falling behind her, then slid down smoothly into a split on the floor. She ended on her knees, chest heaving, eyes finally opening to meet the empty club.
Silence for a second.
Then Marcus let out a low whistle and started clapping slowly.
“Goddamn,” he said, standing up and walking closer to the stage. “You came in here looking like a scared kitten, and then you gave me that?”
Ciara stayed on her knees for a moment, catching her breath, cheeks flushed. She felt exposed… but also strangely alive.
Marcus continued, nodding approvingly. “You’re raw. Not polished. But that quiet fire? It works. A lot of these niggas are tired of the loud, over-the-top shit. You give ‘em something to wonder about. Something to chase.”
He crossed his arms. “You got the job. Start tomorrow night. We’ll put you on the rotation — short sets at first until you get comfortable. House mom will show you the ropes. Tips are yours. Any problems, you come straight to me or security. We clear?”
Ciara blinked, almost in disbelief. “Yes, sir. Thank you.”
Marcus smirked. “Don’t thank me yet. This shit ain’t easy. But you got potential, Ciara. Clean up, get some rest. Tomorrow we see if you can do it with a full crowd.”
She stood up on shaky legs, grabbing her robe and wrapping it around herself. Jasmine was waiting at the edge of the stage, grinning from ear to ear.
As soon as they got back to the dressing room, Jasmine pulled her into a tight hug. “You killed that! I knew you had it in you!”
Ciara let out a shaky laugh, adrenaline still rushing through her veins. She had done it. She had actually auditioned… and gotten the job.
On the drive home, the reality started to settle in.
Tomorrow night, she would no longer just be the quiet girl who escaped an abusive relationship.
Tomorrow night, she would be on that stage again — under the lights, for strangers.
And the thought both terrified and excited her.
