Development toward the final from and investigations into material finishes
FINAL STATEMENT
CLASP / ENVELOP
My inspiration for this project was the skimming stone. Holding a stone is one of the most memorable times in my childhood It is tactile, emotional and adventurous. The grip needed consideration. Holding just tight enough that you could release the stone to let if skim over the water. The form needed to be smooth, like the stone you would select from the river bank. Smooth from the rivers erosive qualities the stone offers a grip more like a considered clasp in my left hand. The elegance of the ripples left in the waters surface needed to be reflected in the contours of the form. The grip is a gentle enveloping around the contours that still enable the gliding release of the skimming action.

Having lived in Edinburgh for I was very interested in the Gothic buildings, called pointed architecture, that dominated the city. It is full of dramatic forms and huge scales. Having investigated many of the buildings I realised that they are made up of and decorated with simple geometries that are intertwined and built on to make them look more complex. The main rose window in the front, is made of, in many cases, circles and crosses.
It was the main sometimes only light source for the interior. The light fell on the beautiful sculptural structural columns that held the cathedrals tall. Inspired by this precedent and those of a more modern gothic forms I have used the sculptural structure and the simple geometries that make up Gothic forms to develop my design.
I have brought the structures to the exterior and incorporated the circle and the cross in the etch for decoration.
These are the basic shapes used in the final form. I will insert the etch design in illustrator. The etched form is intended to cast a shadow like the Gothic window. These forms come together to place the buttresses (skeleton) on the outside of the form - reversing the Gothic tradition of internal structure and outward decoration.
This is my final form from pro 1 and the result of the developments I made to it. The attempts to section these and construct into a new form were unsuccessful (pictures posted earlier) the new form is less complex and more like the Gothic buildings -wider base and pointing upwards . The way light fell on the sculptural forms of a cathedral was very important and the large central rose light was the main source of light inside the building. I have used the structure of the window in the design for my final object etch component - concentric circles and a cross.
These are the ideas and developments from the Gothic precedents showing the geometric forms and the interlinking of the knotting. The buildings had a centre and often worked outwards in plan from that point. i have developed this idea into my form
I have researched Gothic buildings and the decorations used on and in them. The structures used to hold the building up are as beautiful as the decorations applied to the surface. This is something I want to use in my design. Maybe bring the internal structure to the outside. My original form in Pro 1 was also quite geometric and Gothic It pointed upwards from a wider base. So i want to modernize the form. The building in the picture above is now my main precedent with the circles and crosses being my inspiration for decoration.

These are a number of attempts investigate ways to connect and link the pieces to make a form. My inspiration has been the use of simple forms used in the Gothic buildings of Edinburgh where I lived. They were very ornate buildings but when you looked at them they used simple shapes and geometries.I like the use of knots and intertwining they was used as decoration and I have attempted this technique. talking ti Dave I need to rationalize this and be in control of the final form. These here are a bit random
I have investigated the use of links, stitching, locks, jigsaws and intertwining. I am not sure this has enough control on what the final object will look like
