marlene alexandria mckinnon. xvi. gryffindor sixth year, chaser. she/her. has never known how to give in, give up, back down, or pull a punch. warm summer nights, barefeet, crackling bonfires, throwing the first punch, screaming at the stars, challenging authority, giving no explanations, ruby red lipstick, strawberry stained hands, muggle rock and roll, spiting extremists with a smile, risking it all.
“Well, yeah, sure, but I mean... what’s the worst that could happen?” Considering the sugar quills she was currently experimentally dousing in various amounts of firewhiskey as she spoke, probably a fair bit, but she chose to ignore that, instead testing different binding spells on each sugar quill.
donned in a red leather jacket, king entered the gryffindor common room to meet marlene, “we’re lucky i’m in gryffindor,” he began, “red looks really good on me.”
“yeah, you’d look terrible in blue,” she teased, before letting out a whistle at his jacket. it was a very cool article of clothing. “maybe we should switch from gryffindor ties to gryffindor jackets,” she mused.
“GIRL: ash & fire storm & salt wine & blood (a catastrophe of ingredients, none of them sweet) GIRL: sun & moon wind & wars dreams & disasters (the natural product of a battlefield – always fighting just to survive) GIRL: skin & bones flesh & blood mind & heart (reality never claimed to be nice) GIRL: a song unsung, a story untold, a life unlived (too young to be somebody’s metaphor; too old to be your own hero)”
“Mckinnon, at the party this Saturday? I’m going to get fucking wasted,” she announced, walking into their dorm, Lily feeling exhausted in more ways than one. Had she been caught up on her assignments? Naturally, she was, especially when she’d slept at most three or four hours over the last week or so. After talking to Severus, however, Lily felt such anger – but towards herself. Control over her emotions was something she wished she could master, even if control over her mouth was something she’d long but given up on. “But for right now, I’d like to get NUTELLA WASTED. I’ve got a jar bigger than my head that has our names on it and I just need to be with one of my best friends right now.” Tears started to well up in Lily’s eyes, which she quickly went to hide as she went through her trunk looking for the Nutella.
“Aha!” Lily lifted the jar in triumph, turning to Marlene with something of a strained smile. “Where’s Mary off to? I need to just be in one of her blanket forts right now. Escape. I know it’s only been since this morning but I already miss her.”
Marlene glanced up from where she was splayed out on her bed. “Sounds like a plan,” she said agreeably, pushing aside the textbook she’d been flicking through before a delightful distraction walked into the dorm in the form of the ever-wonderful Lily Evans. She’d been doing some reading for her upcoming CoMC assignment, but that was quickly brushed aside in favour of paying attention to her Evans. “Yeah?” she asked, shifting off her front and looking carefully at Lily. Marlene was always absolutely down to get Nutella Wasted, but it usually meant something was up, and so Lily had her full attention right then. “Personally, I think a jar the size of your head is the perfect challenge, but obviously even one bigger than that couldn’t defeat us,” Marlene quipped, shifting again so she was sitting upright, ready to move at a moment’s notice.
Marlene knew Lily Evans better than she knew herself ( which was admittedly not always that difficult, given her lack of skill processing her own emotions, but the sentiment still held ), and even if she hadn’t seen the strained smile, she’d have had to be completely out of her own head to have missed that something was up. “I think she’s at Charms Club,” Marlene answered, cocking her head slightly. “WELL, it’s no Mary Mac special, but my covers are pretty cosy,” she said, grinning at Lily as she shuffled backwards to lean against her headboard and pat the spot next to her on the bed. “We can cast those charms Flitwick showed us on the pillows, you know the one that plumps them? Make ourselves a cocoon of comfort and cuddles—and NUTELLA, of course!” she added. “Could never forget that.”
Hestia crossed her ankles over one another, leaning against the cold, rough bricks of the outer wall. She dug into her bag, reaching for her book and quietly opening it as people passed her by. When she glanced up five minutes later, there was someone walking by with their shoe untied. She cleared her throat, tilting her head before offering a half-apathetic smile. “Sorry to bother you. Your shoe’s untied.”
Marlene, who hadn’t even noticed, focused as she was on thinking about how she was going to pitch studying a XXXXX creature when she got to Care of Magical Creatures later, started in surprise, and then glanced down. Sidling towards the wall Hestia was leaning against to get out of the way of other corridor commuters, Marlene flashed Hestia a grin before kneeling down to tie her shoelace. “Thanks,” she said. “I guess that’s what you get when you get ready for class while trying to avoid being murdered by your dormmate’s cat,” she quipped.
“This? This piece is not yet finished. The pacing is wrong. All wrong. But if you do want to read something I wrote on the train this one is titled ‘black void of the heart.”
Marlene gave Caradoc a slightly exasperated, slightly horrified look. “Please tell me you’re kidding,” she said, reaching out for the sheet. Her eyebrows shot up when she glanced at it, and then she looked at Caradoc with an expression of exasperated sympathy. She was sort of reminded of James, actually—not that she’d ever seen James like this, but that open, earnest sense of heart, of putting oneself on the line, always reminded her of him in some ways—but that didn’t make this any less tragic. “Doc,” she asked, “is this your version of drinking your sorrows away?”
you must have had a heart that beat so strong in you, when it still beat. (x)
my mother says a lot of people have heartbeats
that are knocking on doors that will never open,
and i know my heart is a broken freezer chest
because i can never keep anything frozen.

✧*:・゚✧ merlin! is that CHLOE BENNET? no, it’s just MARLENE MCKINNON the SIXTH YEAR GRYFFINDOR ( PUREBLOOD ). we’ve heard rumors that SHE ( CISFEMALE ) is DARING, LOYAL & SPIRITED but can also be very RECKLESS, VICIOUS & CAUSTIC. if i had to pick one song to describe HER it would THE RECKLESS AND THE BRAVE BY ALL TIME LOW. Good luck with the rest of your time at Hogwarts.
ayyyyyo, v excited to be here! it’s only an hour until the rp opens but it’s 3am so?? i’mma have to get to bed before it does + andromeda will have to come later but! here is marlene ( okay i wrote that at the start and now it’s actually 4am/rp opening time for me so andromeda is defs gonna have to come later bc i gotta send myself to bed lol )
first of all, she does have a full bio if you want to read it!! you can find that here
i’ll try do some quick facts here for you though!!
her dad’s an ambassador for the ministry of magic, and a mckinnon to boot ( think old money, old blood, socialites/philanthropists/often involved with the ministry etc ), and her mother’s from a family in china with old roots and a prestige which has lasted generations, but is not recognised here in the uk ( they immigrated when jia was a child, and were sort of considered nouveau riche for the lack of definitive roots )
marls and her brother matty grew up with That Crowd™ of pureblood society (rodolphus, sirius, etc.) — due to their parents experience/harsh realisations with the way robert’s parents viewed jia, the lessons they learned were different than the rest of their peers’; not that they were pro-equality (though that’s the side the kids are clearly planted on now), but at the least, didn’t ingrain blood supremacist values into them, which made shaking off perspectives touted by some of their childhood friends significantly easier than they otherwise might have been
marlene was sorted into gryffindor a bit after sirius, which was sort of a double whammy for their old crowd; unlike with sirius, though, who still lived amongst them all during the summers, marlene made a fairly clean break. the last event in that society she attended was from before she was sorted — after that, there were a few factors keeping her away: 1) she didn’t want to have anything to do with her grandparents, 2) she didn’t really know how to face those she left behind (girl’s always been a bit prone to feeling guilt), and, eventually, 3) she liked gryffindor, despite some of its flaws, and she was beginning to realise she fit there. it was home. and that was something that would be hard for the people she knew once to swallow
she thrived in gryffindor. not necessarily academically, bc whilst she’s always been fairly clever, her sense of focus and work ethic is... not. but socially, and with quidditch, and some of her classes, the last five years have been good for her
now that sirius has just run away to james’ this summer, the dichotomy of ‘leaving behind / running towards’ has been on her mind a lot more, and while her feelings about leaving behind those people she first built herself on are always complicated, they’ve never been so complex as currently
other facts!!
chaser!! she’s actually probably a better flier than player, by virtue of being so fast. she’s always been a very quick and instinctual person, and that extends to her flying af. quite probably the fastest player in the school, but that in no way translates to the best — her personal vote for that is james, though she acknowledges the skill of others such as gwenog jones, lucinda talkalot, ludo bagman and emma vanity. a good player, she thinks, tends to be a little better-rounded, and not only has good instincts, but also good insight, and an ability to both strategise and to take direction. marlene’s flying is often characterised by the risks she’ll take — as well as her creative moves, like the mckinnon flash — and under leadership she disliked, it probably wouldn’t end as well. however, she trusts, respects and loves james, and she’s very happy to have him as a captain. it also really helps their chaser dynamic, being close, and the relationship between the three chasers is one she cherishes immensely. she’s also not particularly attached to scoring: she likes racing to get the quaffle, and setting it up, like the gameplay dynamics of the chasers working in tandem to get the quaffle down to the other end of the pitch, but it’s not so common for her to take the shot herself
appalling at herbology and potions
like, awful
in second year, she once had a situation with these magical vines, and that pretty much sums up her entire herbology career & then potions is terrible because of her focus
she managed to scrape a high enough grade to get into it at newt level, thanks purely to her wonderful friends who managed to get her studying on track enough, but she’s thinking about dropping it — she kept at it because it’s necessary for a few career paths, and many of her friends, she knows, focus on it because it’s a requirement for aurordom, but she’s got an inkling that aurordom would actually be a poor choice for her, especially given how little she trusts the ministry: she just grew up knowing too many people with clout in the ministry to really believe it cared about doing its job
on the other hand, she loves comc
comc, dada and charms are her three best subjects, and she’s v good at all three of them
dragons!!! she spends her time in history of magic classes drawing up schematics about how they could obtain dragons, manticores and other xxxxx creatures
she quite likes history of magic, though she can only focus on the elements which interest her
she’s got a lot of thoughts on the treatment of lycanthropes by the wizarding society (they’re not positive thoughts lmao bc the treatment of werewolves and other part-humans is so terrible; she has a lot of thoughts about the registration system, and its initial purpose and what it’s used for now, and also beyond werewolves, the treatment of vampires and other part-humans)
empathetic and it can be a real problem for her honestly?
also, she’s not very good at letting go emotionally? she’s absolutely capable of caring about someone and not endorsing or forgiving them, but she tends to carry people around in her heart and under her skin forever and that’s an immensely difficult thing for her to try shake or even address
bad at processing emotions, like,,, so bad LMAO
really really good for a fun time though!! hit her up for shenanigans always
loves sugar quills, like so much,,, eats sugar quills like alice drinks coffee
does Not Like cats
as a kid at the pureblood society, would have a running commentary muttered under her breath (which wasn’t necessarily polite)
A Mess™
she is messy and emotional and has a jumbled up history and personal connections and an avoidance policy which sort of messes everything up and can make it hard for her to deal with those things in a way that helps things remain clear for her — she’s very much led by emotions, and when those are conflicting, it can be a situation — but she tries, and she has a good heart, and when it comes down to it, she’ll always do what she thinks is right, even if it can be a messy road to getting there
she laughs a lot, idk, she’s not rly one to back down from a fight but her general state of being is probably more quips and laughter
she’s a pretty physical person — she just always has been, running around the grounds when she was younger, being so involved with quidditch when she was older, and things being tangible are really grounding for her? it’s also sort of how her reflexes work best — she can duel, absolutely, but she’s also pretty good in a physical fight
not v good at defensive or healing magic though so if any of her friends want to help her out w/ that, hmu!! esp if your character wants to get more proficient at physical fighting as well, marls is defs down to help w/ that!
potential plots!!
i mean tbh anything goes? and it’s nearly 4am so i should sleep soon but i’mma jot down some real quick
related to that last point — someone teaching her healing/defensive stuff, and also anyone who wants to learn to fight a bit better? it’s not something she’d be advertising lmao but like. for a friend, absolutely. also especially if it’s the same person who teaches her defensive stuff, like it might come up as an arrangement
quidditch rivalries!!! she’s not usually the scorer, so it’s probably less of a frustration for keepers (unless they’re captains and are concerned for strategy) than it is for beaters or other chasers, but the speed can be a hass to deal with + i love plotting quidditch things so plssss come to me quidditch players
also quidditch teammates!!! i love shenanigans and teams bonding :’)
friends!!! gryffindor sixth years are presumably the ones she hangs out with most, but she’s fairly outgoing, so i’m sure she’s got a cross-year and cross-house friendship situation
in a similar vein, old friends! people who she’d have known once and now can have messy dynamics with ayyyyo (or even just. they don’t interact anymore but we can plot past things for moments of sadness or nostalgia maybe!!)
girl’s bad with processing feelings, but she’s pretty good at fun, so people to have hooked up with would be good too!! probably has some dates in her history, but i don’t think any actual Official Exes™? but defs down for hooking up etc
honestly any shenanigans. hmu. anything i’ve missed that you think might work or would be fun. pls hmu <3
