i realize that ao3 doesn’t support the needs of all fannish content creators, and i’m sorry that you don’t have an archive to turn to. it’s shitty. but what’s the solution? attacking ao3, like people have been doing for months? (that’s really what my original post is a response to.) or maybe we should spend our time and energy supporting ao3 and platforms like it, and working to make them better-functioning tools for ALL of fandom. images, text, video, multimedia. of course if they’re going to achieve that, they’re going to need more than ten bucks.

and i know that’s not a solution for people scrambling in the short term. i’m just saying, we have a moment for self-reflection here. do we make the same mistakes and get the same unceremonious booting over and over and over again on whatever new social media platform emerges next, or do we dig in and commit to making more space for ourselves?

Or….. orrrrrrr…… give them more money so they can afford the massive amounts of server space it would take for them to start doing that??? They’ve always said that their goal is to host all types of fanwork, that’s just a huge fucking goal. For a company with VC funding it might not be so bad, but for a nonprofit that’s entirely volunteer-run with no paid staff and 100% dependent on donations for its funding, adding image hosting to its current hosting of several million works of fiction is a lot.

Orrr…. study their history, why they exist in the first place, and try getting together a team of people with the knowledge and ability to recreate the Archive, but with fanart.

When it becomes clear that 1) that’s really hard, and 2) reinventing the wheel is silly…. consider ways in which you might be able to support A03 in hosting other forms of fanart.

Honestly I wonder how many women would have “grown out” of being tomboys if we had literally ever seen adult butch women on TV or in a movie or read about one. We occasionally get the little girl character who likes playing in the mud or catching bugs (which, don’t get me wrong, is great) but nothing after childhood.
