In 1847 during the Irish potato famine, the Choctaw Nation of Native Americans donated $147 to assist with famine relief. An Irish town built a memorial to thank Native Americans. (source)
Good guy Choctaws
According to Wikipedia it was actually $710 and when you adjust for inflation it makes just under $20,000. Iâve heard people making fun of this like it was some crappy amount of money that they donated but it was a pretty big deal.
Look listen did you know we arenât taught about this in school??? In Northern Ireland where I live?? Weâre taught about the famine and how many Irish people died and why and how many went to America etc but we are NOT taught that a) the English REFUSED to give aid and in fact TOOK MORE FOOD and that b) Native Americans sent money AND grain!! To a country they werenât even close to! That theyâd barely even heard of!! Why arenât we taught this? (I fucking know why)
âAfter reading the script, Gene Wilder said he would make the film under one condition: that he would be allowed to somersault in the scene when he first meets the children. When asked why, Gene Wilder replied that having Willy Wonka start out limping and end up somersaulting would set the tone for that character. He wanted to portray him as someone whose actions were completely unpredictable. His request to somersault was granted.â Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) dir. Mel Stuart
Two athletes have provided one of the most inspirational moments of the Rio Olympics so far when they tripped over each other in the womenâs 5,000 metres - then helped one another to carry on.
American Abbey D'Agnostino and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand were 3,000m into the race today when D'Agnostino appeared to clip Hamblinâs heel, sending both tumbling to the ground.
But instead of appearing frustrated that their dreams of glory were apparently over, both women put on a display of the Olympic spirit that will live on long after the Games are over.
D'Agnostino, 24, immediately got up to help her rival - then, as it became clear that she had a right ankle injury, Hamblin tried to help her continue.
Both athletes attempted to start chasing after the pack that had left them. But D'Agostino could not keep going as her knee had apparently twisted awkwardly in the fall.
She told Hamblin to go on as she collapsed on to all fours on the track. But the camera then came back to D'Agostino and she was back on her feet and running again.
Hamblin said: âWhen I went down, I was like âWhats happening, why am I on the ground?â And suddenly thereâs this hand on my shoulder like âGet up, get up, we have to finish this.â
âIâm so grateful for Abbey for doing that for me. I mean, that girl is the Olympic spirit right there.
âIâm so impressed and inspiring that she did that. Iâve never met her before. Like, Iâve never met this girl before. And isnât that just so amazing?â
Both Hamblin and D'Agostino were subsequently promoted to the 5000m final on Friday. [x]
