KEY POINTS / BIOGRAPHY
childhood and hogwarts years:
Tw: suicide & depression
Emmeline’s childhood was far from perfect. When she was five, her mother left her home and moved to Ireland to fight alongside the IRA and never returned, leaving a young Emmeline and her father all to themselves. As a heartbroken single dad, Everett Vance, spend as little time at home as he could. The apple of his eye was too similar to the woman he loved and he just couldn’t stand it. So Emmeline was raised mostly by her grandmother, a famous seer and prophecy maker, in Liverpool.
In spite of all that, Emmeline was raised in the best of both worlds. While she absorbed the magical culture like a sponge, she also went to school with muggles until she got her Hogwarts letter.
Even as a kid, her grandmother always said that was destined to great things. And, as usual, she was right. In school she passed all her classes with flying colors, not only because she enjoyed studying, but because she has a prodigious memory.
It was at the end of her fourth year that her world crumbled down. She didn’t think much of the way her grandmother hugged her when she took the train back to Hogwarts after the Christmas break, nor did she know it would be the last time she would see her. On February 14th, just when Emmeline was having her first Valentine’s Day date and her first kiss with that cute Hufflepuff guy she fancied so much, Death Eaters bursted into her family home, looking for Delia Vance, but all they found was her lifeless body. The woman saw her imminent death in a vision and decided it to do it in her own terms and not give the Death Eaters the satisfaction nor the opportunity to torture her.
Her grandmother’s death brought a new side of Emmeline, a sadder one, a gloomier one. For the first following months, she isolated herself from her friends. She spent her free time in bed, sleeping and crying, she quite the quidditch team and stopped going to any social event.
It sometimes seemed as if the pain wouldn’t go away but increase, it was maddening and disheartening. But they say that time heals everything and one day Emmeline got out of bed. With one step at the time, life went on, but the pain would always remain. There are times when an overwhelming rush of sadness and depression will hit her and she might disappear for a few days, but then it would become more manageable and she would carry on.
II. during the first wizarding war:
It was such an easy decision to become an auror, to the point where it was no other alternative. She was her mother’s daughter and has a strong sense of commitment to political causes. Not that she approved what her mother did, but the two shared the same passion.
Some of her closest friends were muggleborns, her mother was a muggleborn, and what Voldemort stand for was just wrong, so there was no way she would stay put. With time she realized that working for the Auror office wasn’t enough, so she also joined the Order of the Phoenix. Having the training was useful, but also being able to obtain intelligence from within the Ministry was an even a greater advantage.
Emmeline was an active member of the Order, always willing to go on missions and even help training the new recruits.
III. where are they now?:
The end of the war was something that left an uncomfortable void in Emmeline. Don’t get her wrong, she was happy, relieved and she could breathe properly. But now what? What was she supposed to do now? Now she had to focus on herself, now she had to stop ignoring all her issues and actually deal with them.
The war forced her to grow up so quickly that she had missed so much. All those years that were supposed to be filled with fun and joy were wasted in a stupid war.
Now Emmeline still works as an Auror, but she also teaches in the Academy. She’s not an ambitious person; she doesn’t plan on climbing any ranks, but more like living a life that she’s proud of and try to make a difference in this world.
She also took this time to work on herself, on reconnecting with aspects of her old life that she had neglected, like painting, rebuilding her relationship with her father and maybe even finding her mother.
ANYTHING ELSE
Emmeline has a dog that follows her around almost everywhere, a border collie named Morrison. Not only that, but she trained him herself to help her at work and tracking things. He saw how the muggle police uses them and felt it was a great idea. Plus, he’s great company, especially when she’s going through one of her sad moments.
