„..and now I will sleep” – the Jókai Court on the Elizabeth Boulvard
At the turn of 19th/20th centuries there were more, than 300 coffees in Budapest, and one of them stood on the corner of the Elizabeth Boulvard and Dob Street. The corner gives home a coffee and confectionery even today, the Hamdi Confectionery, operated by Hamdi family since 1918. In fact it was a coffee also before, the that times owners’s names includes Jospeh Weisberger and Leo Berger among others.
Stepping into the inner yard of the house through the heavy, wrought iron gates, we find a spacious vestibule covered with yellow ceramic cubes. Under the vaulted ceiling of the entrance a short staircase fenced by stone columns shows the way to the actual main stairs. The elevator, surrounded by a unique glass „cage” was placed just in the middle of the yard. The columns and the openable little windows of the elevatorhouse arise the impression of facing to a museum’s case. The building itself was completed by Zsigmond Quittner (architect of the Gresham Palace too) in 1889. The house was the home of the famous solicitor Károly Baumgartner and his family.
Beside the baumgartners the house boast with another famous tenant! On the slim tower of the building a title says: „Jókai Court”. Mór Jókai, the big Hungarian writer, „tale-teller” lived here during the last 4 years of his life. On the second floor at the doors of numbers 15 and 17/a a marmortablet commemorates one of the greatest novellists of Hungary. Here sounded his last words - „..and now I will sleep” – on 5th May 1904 on the evening at 9 hours 20 minutes.
