     Had he been thinking about this for awhile? Definitely. It’s something he’s been working on while he wasn’t actually working, and despite being distraught about his father’s death, he knew that the estate and money given to both him and his sister would give them the perfect starting point for this. “We’ll break even and make a profit from the first year on. Not that a profit is the most important thing, but we do need to make something so we don’t kill ourselves with debt.” Because, let’s be honest, they always lived well above their means. “We’ll need licensing, permits, hiring process. I won’t want to take in animals until everything is built, so that’s first. Remodel the house, the stables. Build another building or two.”

“Well, that sounds good, then.” They ought to have enough money, but it was always good to make sure it wouldn’t be wasted. Frugality hasn’t really been a major problem - she just is. Though not necessarily about everything. For big things, though, she likes to have a plan. “Exactly, it won’t help anyone if we’re in debt. A profit’s a far better place to be in for something like this.” It’s a long list, but if they’re both invested in it, things out to go fairly smoothly. “That’s true. Better start looking into the licensing process soon-ish, since it’ll likely take a while. But buildings first seems like the smartest path.”

     “And with schedules like ours, we’d have to be around a lot more often.” Sure, their schedules were pretty set but things came up and reports or papers needed to be done and graded. It’s not set enough, or where they are home enough, to have a dozen dogs. “You can definitely handle two, though.”

“Definitely, and that’s hard to do, even if I was able to find some way to avoid surprises.” Work had a fairly steady demand, but it wasn’t like clockwork - always something coming up at an inconvienient time. “I think I can, in the end. Especially once they get friendly and used to each other. Then at least, they won’t be lonely when I’m gone. And you’ll have yet another dog to spoil rotten. Don’t think I don’t know that’s part of your motivation.” But she’s really only teasing.

     “I knew you’d say that.” Victor’s beyond happy that his sister has agreed to at least think about this idea with him, play into his little fantasy. He already had some numbers crunched, and he passed a folder over to her. “We don’t even have to stay in the house. I’d want to keep my flat in London, for weekends and days off.” He’d like to be able to be there often, and he wouldn’t mind a two hour drive whenever. “The numbers there include the cost of upkeep, paying the staff, medical supplies, food, and what we’d make in return with donations, payments, help from the government. We’d be coming pretty even the first year.”

“You know me far too well.” And Victor’s obviously been thinking about this for awhile, given the fact that he’s got a whole folder dedicated to this dream. She took the folder, flipping through the pages within, nodding as she read his notes and the plans. “That’s very true. Even more time. Though, some living space might be nice, just in case. But that’s good to know. I might keep mine as well, though I suppose I could also just steal yours.” She nods, still going through the pages. “It looks good, and if we can get it off the ground with minimal debt, that’s the important thing. This is so exciting! I - we should start on it as soon as possible.”

     “Not like either of us could really manage it. I mean, what do we really know about animals other than how to care for one, maybe two at a time?” A rescue would be too much, and there are plenty around anyway. “We’re definitely getting you another dog, though.”

“Yeah, that’s true. We’d have to actually manage a herd of dogs and as much as that would be fun, it’d be a lot more than what I’m used to.” It’s a decent idea, though and she can appreciate the sentiment. “I can’t really say no, can I? I’ll just cave in the end.”

     “Because I don’t want to confront my best friend about his hypocritical smoking habits, and would rather his sister do so, makes it going behind his back?” He’s not sure that idea sticks, hardly leaves time to think on it. He flits across the room, and picks a random book from one of the shelves, now ignoring the younger Trevor.

She sighs. “Fine. I’ll talk to him. But you have to promise me that you’’ll at least bring it up to him at some point in the future.” Sherlock is difficult and obviously pushing him to do too much isn’t going to work. Especially now that he’s sulking. “Is everything mostly all right with you, Sherlock? Besides Victor being an idiot, of course. Asking as a friend, not a doctor.”

     “Yup, decided not to. I’m asking you to do it. You’re closer to him than I am.” Not fully the truth, but not exactly a lie either. “Don’t get all therapist on me already.”

“Yeah, that’s not really how it works. Me working behind anyone’s back doesn’t do either of you any good. Victor’ll just wonder why you didn’t come to him first.” They deserve each other, the idiots. “Sorry, you’ll have to try someone without a psychology degree, in that case.”

     “Your brother needs to stop yelling at me for smoking if he’s going to smoke.”

“Have you considered telling him this? As much as I enjoy seeing you, communication between friends is very important, especially in situations like this. I can only be so persuasive with Victor.”

     Mycroft hesitates at the question, because he set himself up without really realizing it. He doesn’t really want to continue this conversation, but it’s something that does worry him. “Your brother has recently returned to my brother’s life. I am…worried that he will leave again, and send my brother into another downward spiral.”

“Ah.” She knows what to do, how to talk about things, but this is a little more personal than normal. “I can see how that would be concerning. This may or may not help, but I’m pretty sure he’s not going anywhere. And,” She’s more confident in this, “if he does go anywhere, he’s going to remain in contact with people at home. Or I’ll track him down and drag him back myself.”

     “Okay, just hear me out for a minute. It’s going to sound like a lot.” He makes sure she’s listening before he goes into it. “The house is huge. And with the chunk of money Dad left us, we can do a lot with it.” Not to mention their own money. “Imagine we remodel the house, turn it into an animal hospital. There’s the stables we could use, we can build another building or two - have a low cost clinic in the hospital, a shelter, teach new vets and techs. Use this entire property for animals.”

“Ok.” She’s concerned a moment, but Victor’s not going to spring anything terrible on her - or so she hopes that he’d be a little better if he was. She nods at that - they both know this, but it’s not really been a priority before. “Oh, wow.” She’d never thought of that. It’s a lot to take in, as he said before, but it’s a good idea. “That would be amazing! Can you imagine? Not that you haven’t already, but -. It’s perfect - we could easily do large and small animal and still have plenty of space to live in some part of the house. I’d love to do that!” As much money as they have, they can’t just rush into it. “We should make a budget, make sure it can all work out.”

     “Just buy a bigger house.” They could always use their father’s estate as their dogs’ home. They’ve not sold it yet, and could be plenty big for an animal home. Actually, that’s a good idea. “We should just have an animal rescue at the estate.”

“I suppose that is an option. More space, more dogs. Sounds heavenly.” Certainly they had the money for that - and the space for it, too. They wouldn’t have to buy any property if they just used the estate. “Us and what time? But yes, we should. One day.”

     “Maddie. You know how we were trying to figure out what to do with Dad’s estate?” Neither of them really wanted it. It was too big for the both of them, but they didn’t want to outright sell their childhood home either. “I have an idea.” He grins at his sister form across the table. Their respective dogs are lounging at their feet, a cup of coffee in front of Victor on the table. “I think you’ll love it.”

“Yeah, of course. It’s been on a list for a long time.” It was hard to tell what they ought to do with it - it was their home, but it was large and would be rather expensive to keep up as such. “Really? Do tell.” He’s thought about this a lot, she can tell. Not that Victor would ever be completely thoughtless, not about something like this. “I certainly hope so. What’s the idea?”

     “That’s hardly an issue.” Not in comparison to drugs, near death experiences, recklessness. Worrying is something he doesn’t wish to do as often as he does it. It is time-consuming, distracting, and annoying. “If that is the extent of the worrying you have for your brother, you are off well.”

“Yes, I suppose so. There’s a lot worse things he could be doing.” And it’s concerning that Mycroft would bring something that up. “I should count myself lucky, yes. It wasn’t easy when he was in India, but nothing terrible happened. What do you worry about, if I might ask?”

     Before they even reach outside she’s rolling a cigarette between her fingers and willing herself not to light it. Celia has always been the type to proudly say she could give up anytime she wanted, but just doesn’t want to. Well not she does and it’s close to impossible. She is however trying to go cold turkey, which probably is the mistake. Cut down then use patches or something.  “Good you still talk, I can never keep up a decent relationship with anyone I date. Probably because most of the time I don’t actually like them. Well, apart from your brother– I genuinely like your brother, which is nice.” 

She’s not going to comment on the cigarette, but she still takes note of it. It’s habit, trying to pick up cues from people, even if she much prefers actually talking to them. “Yeah, I’m rather proud of it. I guess we both got lucky - well, I assume he also thinks it’s lucky since he’s still talking to me.” She avoids asking the obvious question - why date them, then? “That’s too bad.” Madison laughs lightly at that, however. “I’m glad you like my brother because I like you as well, and I’d hate for him to date someone I didn’t like. I’d have to make their life hell. It’s my duty as a little sister and I’m slightly concerned about what I’d be capable of.”

     “My brother is a constant worry to my mind. You are lucky to have one that knows what he is doing much of the time.” Of course he doesn’t know Victor Trevor terribly well, but he knows him well enough to know that he is very much on his feet in every way.

“Most of the time is the important part there. One day he’s going to come home with more dogs than he knows what to do with.” And there was that one time when he was off in India and didn’t contact her, but that’s personal. “Worrying means you care, and that’s a good thing. So you’ve got that at least.”

     “See, we’re doing something I would never say no to - seeing dogs, potentially adopting one or seven. It’s like giving a child candy - they’ll do anything. I think that may be one of my weaknesses. Dogs, though animals in general.”

“You can adopt seven if you like, but I do not have space for that. However, I will gladly spoil them. Hah - perfect. Now I know your true weakness. I mean, I sort of already knew it, but I’ve got confirmation now.”
