Forsaken Castle Developers Talk About The Monsters & Powers That Flesh Out Its Gothic World
By Joel Couture . May 22, 2017 . 4:00pm

Forsaken Castle, which is in its closing hours on Kickstarter, has players controlling Lily, a paladin looking to prove herself in a castle filled with dangers, monsters, hidden passages, and a dash of cuteness.
Siliconera spoke with Clint Trahan of Duck Block Games to hear a little bit more about what they intended to do with the whipping & axe-throwing Castlevania formula, learning more of the nuances of monster-creation, sub weapons, and providing opportunities to sequence-break.
Forsaken Castle looks like a cute take on Castlevania. What drew you to create this style of game?
Clint Trahan, Lead Artist & Designer for Forsaken Castle – It is mostly inspired by Anime and JRPGs. When we decided to move to pixel art for this project, I looked to some of my favorite games from the SNES and GBA for ideas. I generally prefer lighter fantasy and avoid going too dark or bloody.
What is it about lighter fare that you like best?
I’m not really sure. It’s been a preference of mine for a long time with both anime and gaming, so it’s hard to pin it on one single thing.
Can you give a few examples of anime and RPGs that inspired Forsaken Castle?
I’d say anime like Record of Lodoss War, Rune Soldier Louie, and The Sacred Blacksmith helped spawn a few ideas for the story and characters. For RPGs, I’d say Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, Secret of Mana, Soul Blazer, Fire Emblem, and Ragnarok Online.
What new directions do you hope to take the monster-whipping, castle-exploring formula?
We really enjoy the ‘Metroidvania’ genre and thought it would be fun to use the classic Castlevania gameplay and setting, but focus the level design and upgrades more like Metroid. One example is the use of climbing and crawling to make some areas more complex to navigate.
What thoughts go into choosing and creating the kinds of areas you’ve created for Forsaken Castle? How do you feel out when a location fits the game, thematically?
I made a list of areas that a fantasy castle might have or areas I like from other games and narrowed it down to about 10 places that would give the most variety. I then sketched out where I felt they would fit thematically in 2D.
Same thing for monsters: what makes a monster “feel right” when placed in a location within the game’s world?
The easy part is deciding what kind of monster would even be in this castle – you won’t find any Orcs or Goblins – mostly Undead and Demons. Then, it’s deciding what areas certain monsters would hang out or survive in. Like how a dank cave will have slimes, bats, and a few zombies, but the top of the castle would be more secure with armored skeletons and vampires.
Whipping is an interesting form of attack. Have you added any interesting properties to how players can attack with it?
There will be a few upgrades for the whip – some just increase damage, but others allow you to attack certain enemies or objects that you couldn’t before. The whip will only attack forward so to emphasize the use of spells and sub-weapons.
Special weapons can be seen in some of the videos. What sort of other tools will players be using as weapons?
We have several abilities planned, one is a boomerang cross but will function more like the Windmill Star from Ninja Gaiden. We also have some for utility and mobility, like a spell that turns weak enemies to stone and allows Lily to jump on them.
How do you create challenges using the toolset you’ve given the player? How do you encourage them to work with the weapons they have, rather than just rely on one weapon?
You can either design an obstacle that requires an ability or is plainly obvious that it’s easier when using it. It’s easy to require an ability, such as a block that needs a certain weapon to break it, but we will also be creating areas that can be bypassed with enough skill and creativity to spot them. These are usually referred to as a sequence break.
For weapons, I think it comes down to utility and strengths against some monsters. For example, the Axe sub-weapon will have the highest damage but cost the most mana, while the Holy Water sub-weapon is weak, low mana, but briefly stun locks enemies. So, I could have monsters that are difficult to hit with the axe but easier to fight with the holy water.
Planning a sequence break seems like a challenge. How do you purposely equip players to go through these secret paths through your game? How do you plan for ways to take an out-of-the-ordinary route through the game?
Sometimes, you don’t have to. Many speedrunners will accomplish things that developers never plan for, but it’s important to not make everything outside of the intended route impossible. Part of it is knowing what the character can accomplish versus what we expect most players to do. The routes need to be possible, but for most players it needs to be obvious that they need to come back with a new ability to progress.
If I allow for one sequence break I just need to make sure it doesn’t lead to a dead end before they reach an upgrade there. If it’s possible to reach it, then that upgrade can lead to another sequence break and so on. It will be tricky, but if I can pull it off, it should be a lot of fun.
Can you hint at how players might reach new endings in Forsaken Castle?
The ‘better’ endings will require players to really explore the castle, find hidden areas, and face the toughest challenges in the game. There will also be journal notes found in the castle that offer insight to the story but also give clues to hidden secrets and how to possibly overcome some obstacles.

Valve hire some Kerbal Space Program developers
The big boys at Valve have hired an unknown number of folks behind the space sim Kerbal Space Program [official site], RPS fanzine PC Gamer is reporting. A former Valve developer said as much in an interview on the podcast Game Dev Unchained and a current Valve spokesperson confirmed it to the mag, saying “We’ll be announcing more soon”. Good work, everyone, I’ve had to do absolutely no digging of my own.
“They [Valve] are still buying up mod teams,” said Roger Lundeen of Turtle Rock in the podcast (at the 20 minute mark). “The modders who made… is it Kerbal Space Station [sic]? … They just gave that entire team jobs, if they wanted it.”
We don’t know if that’s exactly what happened, nor do we know how many of the original team from Squad have been employed. But the lead developer on KSP, Felipe Falanghe, did quit his old project in June last year saying: “I desperately need to have something new, to create more than one game in my life.”
It would certainly be interesting to see what that next game might be. We thought Kerbal Space Program was rather splendid, and work on it continues. Just last week a mission editor was announced as part of the sim‘s first expansion, along with missions based on real-world space jaunts from history, while an earlier update has also added communications networks.

Indie development studio +Mpact Games has announced that the hack-and-slash action RPG game Hanako: Honor & Blade will be coming to Steam Early Access on October 9th 2017.
In the game players can choose from at least four different classes: Kenshi, Naginatashi, Ite and Ninja as they battle against opposing teams for several different objectives. Every level included in the game is designed to present unique obstacles and mechanics, and teamwork and strategy will be required to complete objectives.
To celebrate the reveal of the game’s Early Access release date the studio has released a new trailer that focuses on the playable classes that are included in the game. The trailer also includes new gameplay footage and a closer look at some of the game’s multiplayer maps.
The game is built upon Unreal Engine 4 and features several maps, at least four different game modes and multiplayer for up to 32 players.
The game successfully went through Steam’s Greenlight program several years ago and will now be making its way to Steam Early Access on October 9th 2017.

Hell Warders Asks Four Players To Protect An Area From Demonic Assault

Hell Warders pits four players against the varied legions of hell, meeting them head on as they protect the Nexus from destruction in this third person action game.
Players will choose from a variety of heroes to defend their territory. The developer has only announced the Knight, Ash, who uses sword-based attacks, and Dead Eye, who uses hand cannons to blast foes that approach. Other heroes will be added to flesh out the game giving players many different warriors to choose from to beat back the demons.
The players’ protection missions will take place in many different locations, each with elemental hazards like tornadoes and lava to make combat more complex. Players will have to protect multiple entrances in these areas, building their own defenses and damaging towers to slow down the onslaught of colossal fire demons, giant wurms, and other massive foes.
Players will have a difficult decision when it comes to powerups. Their Nexus crystal, which they must protect to survive, will create powerups that get strewn across the map. These will provide a great deal of aid, but will mean sending out one or more heroes out into the open to grab them, putting them and everyone else in danger.
Hell Warders is heading to Steam Early Access in June. Its developers are currently raising funding on IndieGoGo in hopes of adding further features.

Three Steins;Gate Games Join Xbox One Backward Compatibility Program
By Jenni . May 22, 2017 . 11:43am
Xbox One owners who pick up Japanese Xbox 360 games will find some familiar titles have been added to Microsoft’s backwards compatibility program. Major Nelson has confirmed that three Steins;Gate games are now part of the program.
The three games are the original Steins;Gate and the Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram and Steins;Gate: Darling of Loving Vows spin-offs. Linear Bounded Phenogram is essentially a fandisc compilation of stories from different world lines, while Darling of Loving Vows is a romantic comedy set in a Delta world line. Microsoft’s backwards compatibility website notes that Linear Bounded Phenogram is a disc only option.
Steins; Gate, Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram, and Steins;Gate: Darling of Loving Vows are available on the Xbox 360 in Japan.

Niantic Teases That This Summer For Pokémon GO Will Be “Legendary”
By Casey . May 22, 2017 . 9:30am
Pokémon GO is coming up on its one-year anniversary since the mobile game’s release back in July of 2016, during which it became a global phenomenon, and Niantic has hinted that some big surprises are in store for the title coming this summer.
During the 21st Annual Webby Awards, Pokémon GO was selected as best mobile game. When Niantic’s global product marketing lead Archit Bhargava stepped up to receive the award, he mentioned in his speech that this summer would “be legendary.”
This could be inferred as a hint that Legendary Pokémon will be soon added to the game. This would coincide nicely with the mobile title’s first anniversary, and would be a welcome addition that many players have been clamoring for since its release. What lends credibility to this possibility is the fact that, in an interview from earlier in the year, Niantic CEO John Hanke also noted that Legendary Pokémon would be a big part of the company’s plans for the game in 2017.
Pokémon GO is available for iOS and Android devices.

Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for the fighting game Tekken 7. The new trailer features several Tekken 7 characters, including Kazuya Mishima, Heihachi Mishima and Street Fighter’s Akuma.
The new game is the 7th installment in the Tekken franchise, excluding several spin-off games. The arcade version of the game was already released in March 2015. Tekken 7 is the first title in the franchise to make use of the Unreal Engine to power its visuals and as such may feature extensive graphics settings in the PC version of the game.
In the new game two new mechanisms are introduced to the franchise to enhance gameplay.
The first mechanism is called Rage Art, which allows players to execute critical attacks that deal damage depending on the character’s health bar, and the second mechanism is called Power Crush, which allows players to continue their attacks even while they get hit by the enemy.
The game features several other gameplay enhancements, including changes to movement, display and graphics, as well as an improved multiplayer experience.
The version that will be making its way to the PC and consoles in June is based on an updated version of the original arcade version called Tekken 7: Fated Retribution.
Tekken 7 launches on June 2nd 2017 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2 Character Trailer Highlights The Lone Samurai, Baiken
By Sato . May 22, 2017 . 6:30am
A lot of us Guilty Gear fans are stoked to see the return of Baiken in Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, and publisher PQube released a new trailer as well as details on the lone samurai.
[embedded content]
One of the few people of Japanese descent left in the world of Guilty Gear after Japan was almost entirely destroyed in the crusades, Baiken is brash, impulsive, anti-social and motivated by a burning desire for revenge against Gears. She wanders the world looking for signs of That Man, the person she believes responsible for the death of her family and the crippling injuries she sustained as a child.
Despite only having one arm, Baiken has incredible skill with her katana and has developed a unique fighting style using a variety of weapons up her sleeve. Her ‘demon tools’ include a mace, cannon, bladed fan, hook, claw and a spear.
Baiken has a new trick, with her new projectile, the Suzuran Yashagatana, that shoots a rocket along the ground. She can utilize a Yellow Roman Cancel to use the projectile to cover her approach.
In Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2, Baiken is an offensively minded character with limited defensive tools. Her main defensive strategy is her Azami stance, which allows her to counter attacks, both on the ground and in the air.
Her mobility is slower, so she spends most her time controlling space with her sword, mace and infamous tatami mat, while trying to corner her opponents and looking for a knockdown opportunity.
Baiken shines when she knocks the opponent down, with several options for putting on the pressure and making her opponents crack.
Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2 releases in Japan on May 25, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. The game launches in North America and Europe on May 26. The PC version launches on June 1.

League of Legends: The MSI 2017 winners are…
http://www.game2k.xyz/news/league-of-legends-the-msi-2017-winners-are/
League of Legends: The MSI 2017 winners are…
PREAMBLE BEFORE THE JUMP BECAUSE SPOILERS BLAH BLAH BLAH AND REMINDER THAT THE MID-SEASON INVITATIONAL IS THE CROSS-REGIONAL TOURNAMENT BETWEEN SPRING AND SUMMER. IT’S A TOURNAMENT IN ITS OWN RIGHT BUT IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE DOING WELL AT MSI HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOUR SEEDING FOR THE WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIP ETC ETC!
The winners of the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational 2017 tournament are:
SK Telecom T1.
I mean, you probably could have guessed that with a reasonable degree of success if you know much about League of Legends’ [official site] because the stream of hot takes about whether the rest of the world can do anything to stop the Korean juggernaut is less a stream at this point and more a reliable geyser spurting thousands of words onto the internet every time a cross-regional League of Legends tournament rolls around. HOWEVER, the more interesting points here are that a) they were facing up against European side G2 Esports in the grand final and b) that G2 stood their ground in some impressive ways.
Game one saw an impressive start from the EU side although it was countered by SKT’s ability to punish pretty much any mistake, capitalise on opportunities and create tiny advantages which start to snowball. Still, given the Korean side’s reputation it’s always reassuring to see them mucking up in some key human ways at tournaments. Game 2 was the one where the EU side really shone and I’m assuming that mid-laner Perkz will be dining out on his solo kill of legendary SKT player, Faker, for a good while. I know I would. It’d be all “Pip, could you make me a cuppa?” and I’d be like “Only if you rewatch me solo-kill Faker in front of thousands of cheering fans” I’d make a flick book out of the frames of the video and give it to everyone as a Christmas present.
ANYWAY. G2 translated their lane dominance into a proper trouncing which obviously set Twitter alight with “MAYBE SKT IS GOING DOWN!!!!” followed by a lot of “WELL YOU’VE JINXED IT NOW”.
And jinxed it they had. Thanks Twitter. SKT spent games 3 and 4 doing SKT things. This play by Wolf was probably the highlight of the series – it’s from game 3 and it shows Wolf as Zyra catching three of G2 with the Stranglethorns ultimate:
One of the big things for G2 at this tournament was the chance to put the meme about them going on vacation to rest. In case you’re not up on your LoL history it’s referring to the fact that after the spring split and before MSI 2016 the team’s management let the players take a couple of weeks holiday. Their awful performance combined with the idea that they hadn’t bothered to practice and their name was mud for the duration of the early stages of the tournament. Michael Johnson wrote a piece looking at the details in case you’re curious, because it opens up discussions about whether G2 were showing complacency and squandered an opportunity through lack of practice or whether the organisation was caught between a rock and a hard place in terms of trying to make sure players didn’t get burnt out with gruelling schedules. Perhaps a bit of both.
Obviously the vacation jokes won’t ever go away entirely, but it’s nice to see them get to come back and assert themselves with some strong performances.
Here’s the official highlights reel so you can get a feel for how the whole tournament went down:
[embedded content]
And now we prepare to head into the regional summer splits and see how the teams shape up with Worlds coming into view on the horizon. For SKT specifically their coach, kkoma, notes that there’s definitely work to be done. He specifically noted that he wants to continue working on how the newcomers Peanut and Huni integrate with the team. Huni used to play for Fnatic and rapidly established himself as one of the biggest personalities on the sceneas well as being a skilled player. He headed over to the North American scene before replacing SKT’s top-laner Duke this season. Peanut has been pottering around the Korean scene for a few years, first on NaJin and then ROX Tigers before joining SKT as one of their junglers. Maybe by then I’ll be used to thinking of Peanut as an SKT player instead of spending whole games going “wait, when did Faker join the Tigers?”
While I do that, let’s rewatch game 2!

New Pokémon Smartphone Game Is All About Raising Magikarps, For Magikarp Lovers
By Sato . May 22, 2017 . 4:00am
The Pokémon Company previously teased a new smartphone game that’s all about Magikarp and with the game releasing tomorrow we now know a lot more about the game made for Magikarp lovers.
Splash! Magikarp is a game that features Magikarp as the protagonist, and your goal is to help it train so that it can “Splash” higher than any other Magikarp out there. As you train your Magikarp with Eye of the Tiger in loop, you’ll come across various events as well as some familiar Pokémon.
The game takes place in a place called “Hop Town,” a town where everyone loves Magikarps. Hop Town has a special league where Magikarps compete by seeing which one can Splash the highest.
Becoming the best Splasher requires serious training as well as serious eating to go for the Splash gains. You’ll need to make sure your Magikarp is eating and training well in order for it to be at the top of its Splash game.
Nothing beats the majestic looks of the original Magikarp, but you’ll get to see various kinds of Magikarps, including some with rare appearances.
Pikachu, Piplup, Rowlet, and Charizard are among some of the popular Pokémon you’ll see in the game, and they’ll be there to cheer on Magikarp.
They’ll also be there to help support on the game’s home screen pond.
As you advance through the game, you’ll go through randomly occurring events. These events come in good and bad varieties. For example, the above screenshot shows that Magikarp was able to get a Berry after a high Splash.
This event is called “Old Rod” and it shows Magikarp encountering a snack with a message saying “It looks like eating this will provide an instant power-up, but I also have a bad feeling about it…”
As you play through the game you’ll unlock various decorations for your home screen pond.
Splash! Magikarp launches in Japan for iPhone and Android on May 23, 2017.

King of Fighters XIV punching to PC in June
Having made the transition from 2D pixellated punching to 3D dropkicking, The King of Fighters XIV will next come from consoles to PC. Developers SNK have announced a June 15th release date for what they’re imaginatively calling The King of Fighters XIV Steam Edition [official site], which will be ten months after the PlayStation 4 release. Hey, after years of catch-up, they are closing the gap. Here, have a look at side-on action in this highly enthusiastic trailer trying to upsell:
[embedded content]
The main change with KoF 14 is obviously a switch from 2D pixel art to 3D, which is a look I’m not entirely digging. It does also rework the underlying fighting systems a touch, mind. As the exuberant announcer says:
“There are of course new advanced systems added as well for fighting game fans, including the Climax Cancel feature, which allows players to string together multiple super special moves for extremely flashy and damaging combos.”
I’m told the kids are calling that ‘edging’ these days.
For the PC version, SNK have called in help from Abstraction Games – the folks behind the PC ports of games including Danganronpa and A Boy and His Blob.
The King of Fighters XIV will cost £44.99 when it hits Steam on June 15th.
If you’d simply like to see some punching, voila:

Fire Emblem Heroes’ New Summoning Focus Brings Another Higher-Chance Shot At Getting Azura
By Sato . May 22, 2017 . 1:00am
Fire Emblem Heroes has gone up with a new Summoning Focus “Focus: Weapon Triangle,” that features Azura, Cecilia, Titania, and Hinata.
The Weapon Triangle Focus will be around through June 6, and will give higher chances of obtaining the following heroes:
Hinata: Wild Samurai (Sword)
Azura: Lady of the Lake (Lance)
Titania: Mighty Mercenary (Axe)
Cecilia: Etrurian General (Green Tome)
Of the four Heroes, Azura is certainly the best with great speed and ability to provide allies with extra resistance, but what puts her on top is her useful “Sing” ability that enables her target to take another action.
Fire Emblem Heroes is available on iPhone and Android.
