Angerme's Wada Ayaka talks about her love for Hello! Project with "20 Questions"!
In 2018, Hello! Project is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so we’re starting a celebratory serialization for it! From the members of Hello! Project, their feelings and thoughts towards the 20th anniversary and activities up until now, as well as enthusiasm towards 2018 and the everyday thoughts of idol life; we did a “20 questions 20 Answers” talk~ This time Angerme’s leader Wada Ayaka is appearing!
Wada Ayaka = Born August 1st 1994, Hometown Gunma. Bloodtype A. 1st generation member. Leader. Nickname Ayacho.
Q1: Tell us the meaning of your name?
There wasn’t anything special, between “Ayaka, Reika, Reina, Erika” my mom was fine with any of those names (lol). There isn’t much meaning behind the kanji, either; that is to say, I have never heard there was anything special.
Q2: What senior do you aim towards?
I aim towards the time when Takahashi Ai-san was the leader of Morning Musume. I respect the platinum era. In the year I debuted, I got to do activities with those seniors, I got to appear many times as their opening act, so I got to see their lives again and again. At that time I thought they were too cool. The performances were of high quality that you wouldn’t think of with an idol and everyone was nice and funny in the dressing room. I do not think they are perfect people but I decided when I was 15 I wanted to become like them when I turned 20!
Q3: Who would you want to be reborn as?
There is something in everyone but, Matsuura Aya-san. She is the most talked about songstress within Hello! Project, right? It seems like my Manager-san was in charge of Matsuura-san for a long time, when he said “I really thought that Matsuura-san was a skilled singer from the bottom of my heart,” I thought that was amazing. I’d like to become Matsuura-san and sing songs.
Q4: What are you the best at within Hello! Project?
I have a high level of admiration for art (lol). I’ve always like Edouard Manet!
Q5: Tell us something amazing about Hello! Project
Our performance quality is high, of course. Our dancing is chiseled as well; we dance to a variety of genres and we sing every song live. As we get older the skills of the members level up. We are putting effort into it, so I think that seeing that is enjoyable!
Q6: Who would you want to be in a Hello! Project special unit with?
It is really an extravagant request but, I want to join the platinum era Morning Musume! We would sing “SONGS”!
Q7: Tell us an Angerme song you like!
“Dondengaeshi”. The lyrics are really good and the song has a purifying power that feels cathartic. Also the excitement in the song when the song reaches its climax! It speed that feels like its turning round and round, it’s a strong song that has a bang! bang! bang! feeling of shooting a gun. It has a good feeling when you dance to it. The lyrics speak a bit of a of a harsh experience; it is close to my own experiences so I’ve thought “Ah, I see. I must keep doing my best more and more,”.
Q8: What is a Hello! Project song you like?
Morning Musume-san’s “Namidacchi”. When I went to go see Morning Musume-san’s Rival Survival concert, it was the graduation of Kamei-san, Junjun and Linlin, at the end they sang “Namidacchi” with everyone crying, while it should have been sad they were sparkling amazingly. Although I was sad I became positive for some reason. I can’t forget that place. The song is good in the first place, I love that sight, as well.
Q9: What is the difference between current and previous Hello! Project?
I mean this in a good way, the seniors and juniors are growing thinner. Before, seniors were at the level that you couldn’t say a word to them. Now we normally have harmonious rehearsals. Of course, I live with my experiences from that time. But, recently, the way of Hello! Project and idols is changing; there is something that conflicts with the idols of old. What I am speaking of is something I’ve occasionally thought of like ‘isn’t that something that’s outdated?’.
Q10: Other than yourself, what member of Hello! Project is your oshi?
Sasaki Rikako-san (Angerme). In any case her face is cute! Other than that, her dancing is powerful, it feels like she lets her power out through her shoulders (lol). I personally like her eyebrows. Mine are as well but, Rikako-chan’s are thicker, they are so thick and also beautiful! When she is walking, her behavior is cool. I think that sort of thing makes her fashionable.
Q11: What do you want people to see most from you?
During lives. Even in the same songs, in one concert my expressions will totally change, I think that it’s completely different per year. I want you to enjoy watching me. I’m one of the first members and I’ve been doing it ever since, I’m singing the songs from when I was young with my current expressions now. This is something only I can do as I’ve experience the past.
Q12: What is work you’d like to challenge?
There are lots of things I want to try. I’ll try anything! I like dancing and singing, I like acting. I like photoshoots. After all, I like everything. I think that everything is fun (lol).
Q13: What do you want people to see the most from Angerme?
I think that Angerme is powerful from the start, but recently everyone has gotten a little older, the various hobbies and interests are able to be shared between the members, everyone is stylish. When dancing and singing we don’t have clothes that give us a sense of individuality, but when just standing our behavior is cool. With that feel, we are different from other idols! Personalities change but, when we stand on stage the atmosphere when standing on it has a cool behavior to it. Ah, its different during MC’s (lol).
Q14: What will you be doing in 20 years?
Doing activities as normal, I think. I’ll be forty after all so I may not be able to dance or sing……Ah, I don’t know~. When I’m forty, perhaps I can increase the amount of art related work that I do, perhaps I’ll live in France. I want to do work that popularizes art.
Q15: Since it’s the 20th anniversary, tell us a secret!
My writing it dirty (lol). In school I got too into the habit of writing like waahh, and I prioritized speed over cleanliness in my writing. Before that, my writing may have been clean.
Q16: After the 20th anniversary what do you want to do?
Since the focus is singing and dancing, so I want to raise the quality of both. Of course when it comes to facial expressions, I want to absorb more and more various expressions. I think that it’s a bit difficult to understand, like cool or cute expressions, I want to put in an expressive power that wasn’t part of it.
Q17: What would you be doing if you weren’t an idol?
I’d want to become a curator. Any museum is fine!
Q18: What is the number one thing you’re into right now?
It is only art (lol). I gradually have gotten into it but I don’t collect it. Right now I’m into modern art. I’ve gone to various exhibitions and festivals modern art authors have had and from there I’ve gotten various information about purchasing it. I’ll often check out those kinds of events, and I’ll go for real.
Q19: What Hello! Project members do you get along with?
Morning Musume 17’s Iikubo Haruna-chan who is the same age as me. I was invited out today (lol). I want to do an event with her. We hang out together but, we haven’t gotten to do much work together. We haven’t ever sung together, so I’d like to sing with her~.
Q20: What is an idol to you?
It’s a big thing to say, they have the presence of giving energy and courage to various people. But, that is to say I’m not very particular about it, I don’t really think about how an idol acts, as I’m doing what I want as I’m heading towards my dreams. Therefore, there isn’t anything an idol must do.
It is a place to always chase your dream. (By the way, what kind of dream is it?) It’s a personal dream for me, I don’t think I want to break the limits of being an idol but, ‘isn’t that not like an idol?’ is a thought I want to challenge. I hate that its ok to just be cute and smiley. Therefore I want to do my performances perfectly and show you through my power of persuasion. So, that is something I’m always going after.
