I've been rewatching Red Dwarf whilst animating and working on stuff for my grad film. I just finished series 6 and here are some thoughts I've had. I've dipped back in and out over the years but this is the first time I've properly sat down and watched it all end to end since I was very young:

It's amazing how quickly Rimmer jumps back and forth episode to episode from being a misunderstood nerdy dork (Holoship, Justice, The Inquisitor) to an actively menacing presence (Bodyswap, Meltdown, Quarantine). No wonder the others give him such a wide berth even when he's just being a regular slightly tismy jerk, given this is the same guy who genocided a planet full of waxdroids
I wish lady Holly got more to do :/ But her sidelining feels somewhat inevitable with Kryten becoming a regular. I like White Hole and her different little looks in Demons and Angels are so cute
Demons and Angels is probably the episode between I and VI that I've watched the most. I know it inside out. This is not just because it has gay sadist Rimmer. I feel like it's because Demons and Angels just gets straight into the action so I've stuck it on aside many a meal. Also it has gay sadist Rimmer.
Rewatching series VI has made me realise how little I've rewatched Emohawk and Out of Time. They're both episodes I wrote off as being weaker but Out of Time is great and Emohawk is also great until all the stupid Dwayne Dibley stuff at the end. To be fair, that stuff is not as egregious as what's to come, but still.
The vibe is so excellent in I and II. I love how slowly it moves. I love how inventive Grant and Naylor have to get due to the lack of moving pieces. Just on friday I showed one of my coursemates Tongue Tied in an effort to get her to watch the show.
Weird being 24 and Lister is 25 at the start of the series. I first watched this show when I was about 12, and its always odd to "catch up" with characters on TV. I feel as though I understand him a bit better than I used to, given that I am also a mid-20s slacker and transmasc who said that who said that
I feel like Cat's characterisation somehow improves and downgrades as we go into series VI. His dialogue starts to get kinda generic with all the clothes references that are out of date (its funny hearing him say "we're deader than tank tops/corduroy/flares!" when these are all things I wouldn't be shocked to see people in now. cycles of fashion and such) but its nice to see him sincerely care about the rest of the crew and become someone they have to depend on. Plus. The Riviera Kid!
I am dreading watching series VIII but I'm also weirdly excited? I've never sat down and watched it properly. When I watched the whole show end to end as a kid with my dad, we go to the end of VI and he said "Right. You can watch the rest on your own I don't like the rest" and then what with everyone on tumblr saying series VIII was dogshit I never properly watched it. Then all my trekkie mates got into RD during lockdown and told me not to bother. Well. I'm gonna. Gotta catch em all. See you all in like two weeks when I watch Krytie TV and need to wash my eyes out or something. Series VIII has a lot of genuinely interesting concepts. That's why we have fanfiction I suppose.
I think about Jim and Bexley all the time. The consume my every waking thought. When I'm done with my film I have so much I need to write and draw about them. I've been constructing a "what if the twins didn't start aging rapidly and stayed on the ship" timeline in my head. I've been constructing that AU since I was about 17. My main thing is that Rimmer would 100% become their other main parental figure. Kryten would be very hands on, but Rimmer would feel as thought he has more "wisdom" to pass on. This AU excites me but I have no time to write about it!! Ahhhh!!!
here at the sandwich shop, we’ve started to notice some people who are new to sandwiches aren’t used to meat and cheese between two slices of bread. they find this practice strange and confusing. that’s why we’ve decided to cut the bread out all together. from now on, we’ll just serve slices of meat and cheese on a plate.
we know that many of our loyal sandwich shop customers have been coming here for years to buy our delicious sandwiches. but some people don’t “get” sandwiches, and we need to try and appeal to them with an easier-to-understand meal format. we will no longer be serving sandwiches. all of our food will just be cold cuts on a paper plate. we love our customers and appreciate your understanding <3
Yes we know Craig's Cold Cuts down the street does cold cuts better than we do and has millions of customers. That's why we need to switch to cold cuts, to get their customers. We hope that our long-time sandwich loving customer base will be patient in this transition to cold cuts and welcome the certain influx of Craig's Cold Cut customers who will surely come here to enjoy our worse cold cuts with you, our sandwich-deprived customer base, whom we value so much.
