One day I was eating at a restaurant in Peru with the 3 guys who were volunteering with me and someone asked us where we came from. So I said France, the German guy said Germany, the Maltese guy had to say Italy because almost no-one in Peru knows where Malta is, and then the American guy said Portland, like he didn’t even specify the state he just thought everyone knew where Portland is 😤

The American comments on this post are so irritating. I think that some of them don’t realise that the USA is just a country while Europe is a continent made up of different countries where you can find different religions, different autochthonous ethnicities, different languages etc; You can’t compare a single country’s diversity to the diversity of an entire continent.

“But Texas is so different from Oregon! People need to know which state I’m from because they’re all so different!” We don’t care. We are going to see you as an American, not as a Texan or a Californian or whatever, just like you’re going to see someone from Bavaria as a German, someone from Normandy as a Frenchman or someone from Piedmont as an Italian, not as a Bavarian, a Norman and a Piedmontese. European countries have regional differences too, even more than US states yet we don’t feel the need to specify that to foreigners when they ask us where we’re from unless they ask us to elaborate.

Russia is the largest country in the world and undoubtedly more diverse than the US. If you were to ask a Russian where they’re from they would say that they’re from Russia, not Komi or Tuva unless they’re speaking to another Russian or someone they know to be familiar with Russian geography.

You’re not special nor does the world revolve around you, just accept that and move on.

We grow up too fast. (TW: suicide, abuse)

I remember during freshman year, I became really close friends with the most popular guy in our grade, solely because I noticed he was depressed. Since becoming friends he tried to kill himself three times in one semester; the first time it happened was arguably the worst. He got expelled from school and his dad beat and yelled at him when he found out. So he tried to kill himself. It was a week before I even got a text from him and I was quickly told everything. I was doing a school play, and as we were talking outside about all the school drama I felt the need to tell one of the members. The member I felt compelled to tell was like an older brother to me and was also his neighbor. So I pull him off to the side, and I tell him I have something important, but i needed him to keep it a secret. I stick my pinky out for a pinky promise, and he looks at me confused. And in that moment, it hits me. I’m still a kid. I’m just fourteen and having to tell someone that a kid they knew tried to end his life. After I tell him the news he hugs me; when we’re truely alone, he tells me that he helped him in what made him get expelled. He starts to panic, I console him, and we wander back to practice.

This is why our generation is struggling. The first time my mom dealt with a person dying was when her friend killed himself in junior year of high school. The first time for me was in fifth grade when a kid went missing and jumped off a bridge. Almost every adult I’ve talked to doesn’t know what to do (besides call a hotline) when someone wants to kill themselves. Every single person I know has an arsonal of strategies on suicide. On top of trying to not die ourselves, we also have been thrusted into trying to not die at the hands of others in school. Before we could even go into war we had to decide if hiding or making a run for it was safer. Before we become old enough to consent we deal with our mothers and fathers dying at the hands of those sworn to protect us. 1 in 5 teens suffer with depression, and when we’re told it’s because of phones in our hands, it sounds more like an excuse than a reason.
