Father Thames | Genius Loci / Old Man Of The River

"

Father Thames aka Baba Thames rules the Thames inland of Teddington Lock, and inhabits the Thames Valley. He is sometimes also referred to as the Old Man of the River. Like Mama Thames, many of his tributary rivers have Genius loci that manifest as his 'Sons'. He has the gift of prophecy because of his immense age, however Oxley warns Peter not to ask Father Thames questions directly as his insight often comes with a price.

Father Thames appears as a vigorous seventy year old man of short stature with a pinched face, Roman nose, and heavy brow. He dresses like a traveling showman and--like Mama Thames--has an extremely alluring glamour. Peter describes his vestigium as being redolent with beer, skittles, horse manure and walking home from the pub by moonlight. His power comes from the earth and weather in contrast to Mama Thames who draws her power from the ports and ocean. Before becoming Father Thames he was a Pre-Roman priest living in Londinium with the name Tiberius Claudius Verica. Peter encountered this version of Father Thames briefly during the final events of the Rivers of London. According to Mama Thames, when he was a young man he to stood on London Bridge and made a promise to the river much like herself.

Mama Thames | Genius Loci / Goddess of The River Thames

Mama Thames aka Mother Thames is the Goddess of the River Thames. Unlike Father Thames, her power comes from the seas and ports. She holds court East of the Tower of London in a converted warehouse, just short of the Shadwell Basin, in the Wapping area of London.

"

Her appearance is that of a middle-aged, Nigerian woman, impeccably dressed in Austrian lace. She is described as having a generous figure, perfect skin, full, dark lips and cat-shaped eyes. Her hair is braided and she was wearing a head-dress of Portugese beads when Peter Grant first meets her. During the Spring Court she had her hair woven into an elaborate gold birdcage. She has an almost irresistible, arousing supernatural glamour. To Peter Grant it evoked the smell of salt water and coffee, diesel and bananas, chocolate and fish guts. She was originally a Nigerian woman who immigrated to the United Kingdom in 1957 to study nursing. Some time between 1957 and 1966, after being dumped by her fiancé and failing her nursing exams, she decided to commit suicide by jumping into the Thames. While contemplating her suicide on London Bridge the River Thames called to her to exchange her life to become a genius loci. Mama Thames claims to have forgotten her original human name.

just a PSA. my Rivers of London fancast series is a passion project that i’m spending time and thought towards because i adore the books and re-read them constantly. ROL is such a creative and imaginative series with interesting and rich characterisation. i love that it’s set in london and i can picture the places visited due to being a born and raised brit, who is well aware of london and the british class system, because i live in it lol - albeit no longer near london! i may have different ideas and opinions to people on these books and characterisations but i will not shit on other people or their thoughts, whether i agree or not. so any hateful responses will just result in blocking because life’s to short to let hateful people encroach on my happy place.

*** adding, that i hesitated about my options for nightingale, as i was very aware that he came from a white 'old boys club' background (especially the folly's exclusion of women ew) and the UK has been entrenched in a class system which favors rich white men over well anyone else for centuries. and the set up of the folly and nightingales education (casterbrock which is very eton/harrow coded) is very 'of the elite'. however, given the fact that poc existed within britiain at the time and were involved in the war effort and some who were involved in british nobility. it's not untoward for a poc option for nightingale to be considered. however, i do appreciate that there is a distinct divide between peter and nightingale, which does not just come from their age disparity, but also their different life experiences which include race. i understand the argument for it. regardless, i always see gary oldman when i read the books and i'm not sure why. albeit a younger version of himself.

Dr Abdul Haqq Walid | Official physician and pathologist of the Folly.

Dr. Abdul Haqq Walid is the official physician and pathologist of the Folly. He specialises in cryptopathology. When he's not helping out on magical business he works at the UCH (University College Hospital, a teaching hospital based in London) as a world-renowned gastroenterologist. He also operates as a personal physician to both Peter and Nightingale.

He's described as a spry, gingery man in his fifties, who speaks with a soft Highland accent. Ben Aaronovich has stated that Dr. Walid took an Arabic name when he converted to Islam during medical school; his name pre-conversion is unknown. He has a dry sense of humour, laced with self-mockery. Dr. Walid is a very intelligent man, who, like Peter, is interested in the scientific basis of magic. He often encourages Peter to do magical experiments and share the outcomes. He has invented and/or repurposed several words to describe magical conditions, like 'hyperthaumaturgical degradation' and 'sequestration'. **According to the graphic novels, he is a older, pale gentleman with reddish hair. I will be looking at sense of character as well as physical attributes when casting him. I have also selected mostly scottish / those of scottish ancestry actors.

Molly | Fae folk

"

Molly is the Fae housekeeper, chef, and butler of the Folly (including the coach house). She appears as a silent lady dressed in an Edwardian maid's uniform. She is an excellent chef, skilled Haemomancy practitioner, and a constant presence in The Folly. Her age is unknown, but it is comparable to Thomas Nightingale's.

Since being brought to the The Folly in 1911, Molly has refused to leave the grounds of the building. Nightingale and Peter are unsure why this is, but they hypothesise she is afraid of imprisonment or subjugation by other fae. Nightingale describes her kind of fae as those who "were changed by magic, or they were born into lineages that have been changed. And as far as I know, this leaves them- incomplete." Peter further explains that with a bit of running translation, it was clear that "incomplete" people like Molly subject to abuse and exploitation by their more powerful supernatural bretheren and by practitioners with no moral scruples. Although Molly does not speak, she is able to understand and write British English. She's capable of answering the phone and fetching the person the call is for (without speaking) and writing notes to the grocers for deliveries. She does make a rhythmic, hissing sound when she laughs. She has more teeth than a human, and the teeth are sharp and pointed.

Beveley Brook | Genius Loci

Beverley Brook is the current Genius loci of the London river with the same name. Genius loci are the gods/goddesses or spirits of the rivers themselves. Beverley brook is a Genii locorum of the River Thames and its tributaries. She is the child of Mama Thames, Goddess of the Thames River in London. It is unknown if she was conceived by the magic of Mama Thames like the river Chess, or through some other method.

Like Peter Grant she is of West African descent. She enjoys extremely spicy food and often appears wearing fashionable clothing or t-shirts with assorted sayings printed on them. She has demonstrated an interest in cars, and and is a student at Queen Mary University reading Environmental Science. She is a confident, intelligent woman who appears as a physically attractive woman in her mid-twenties with dreadlocks.  She has an affinity for some types of people from the demi-monde, particularly Molly and Mellissa Oswald.

Thomas Nightingale | The Nightingale

Thomas Nightingale is the wizarding mentor (or Master) and commanding police officer of Peter Grant. He currently holds the rank of a Detective Chief Inspector (DCI). He is also the ranking officer in the magical division of the Metropolitan Police, the Special Assessment Unit (SAU).

"

Nightingale is a reserved and serious person, who rarely loses his calm. He appears mostly distant, but is seen to be loyal and protective towards those he likes. He has a dry sense of humour and enjoys watching rugby on television. He is described as 180 cm tall, slim, with finely boned features, grey eyes and brown, short hair. He appears to be in his early forties, but gives his birth year as 1900. Nightingale is always well dressed in suits or other formal clothing. His most casual outfit has been a polo shirt and jeans. He sometimes carries a silver-topped cane that is also his staff.

Lesley May |

"

Lesley May was a promising police constable who trained with Peter during their two year probationary period. Her position in the Metropolitan police was short-lived due to the events of the Rivers of London. She later joined the The Folly as an apprentice practitioner under Thomas Nightingale, but this was also short-lived.

Lesley is described as having attractive face, short and blonde. She is initially described as "impossibly perky", even in a stab vest.  Lesley is highly focused and frequently described as having a great aptitude for police work. However, she has a bit of a cynical streak regarding the possibility of there ever actually being law and order

Peter Grant | The Starling

Peter Grant is the protagonist of the Rivers of London series. He is a mixed race detective constable with the London Metropolitan Police as well as an apprentice wizard. He is 25 years old at the start of series, and approximately 28 year old in False Value.

"

Peter is described as having a white father (Richard 'Lord' Grant) and black mother (Rose Grant) from Sierra Leone. Peter has a very positive albeit slightly wry outlook on life. He is curious and innovative, but very easily distracted, sometimes by magical vestigia, more frequently by beautiful women. Though his decisions may be occasionally rash, they are always well-intended and he has an earnest desire to protect innocents. He has been described as a "cheeky bugger".
