Getting Started: A guide for new roleplayers
You! Yes you! You the person behind the screen. Are you interested in becoming a roleplayer?
Yeah? Then this is the post for you!
This post will guide you through the basics of role playing. If you’ve been roleplaying for a while then this is not the post for you.
What is roleplay anyway?
In short, it’s an interactive story with other people.
Terminology
RP- short for roleplay.
Muse- The character you play.
Mun- The person behind the screen.
Multi-muse- A blog of more than one muse, or character.
Verse- The verse of your muse, or character if you will.
OC: Short for original character.
Script Format- A type of roleplay that is like a screenplay. This used to be popular when I started roleplaying, but it seems to have died out.
Example:
Helen: *Stares at the stars in the sky* The sky is so beautiful.
Jacob: *Smiles* I love coming here at night it’s so peaceful.
Story format- A type of roleplay that is like a story.
Example:
Helen stares at the night sky before her. She had always found the stars to be so beautiful. She hears the crickets chirping in the night.
“The sky is so beautiful.” She says.
Jacob smiles.
“I love coming here at night. It’s so peaceful.”
Faceclaim- Someone to be the face of your character. People use actors/actresses for this, though I have seen a few people using themselves.
Semi-selective- This means the mun roleplays with a certain number of people.
Non-selective- This means the mun roleplays with everyone.
Highly selective- This means the mun only roleplays with certain people.
Mutuals only- That means the mun only roleplays with people that follow them back.
Smut- it’s well… it’s p*rn.
How do I get started in the community?
First and foremost, you need a blog!
I will go over a side blog verses a new blog.
Side Blog
Pros:
You don’t have to keep up with more than one account.
Cons:
Asks will be listed under your main blog.
There is no way to switch it to your side blog.
New blog:
Pros:
Asks will be listed under the name of the blog.
Next you need a fandom!
The way I found the community was browsing around the Detroit Become Human tag. Eventually roleplay blogs started coming up.
You of course would choose the fandom that you’re interested in.
Creating your blog
First you need to decide a blog name.
My recommendation is a tag name related to your character.
Next you need an avatar, and a blog description.
What do I put in the description?
Character name
Fandom
Faceclaim
What should I have on my blog?
A nice theme. Please, if you can, try to make it as accessible as you can.
A character avatar.
A character bio. Especially for OC’S. I can’t tell you how many blogs I’ve clicked out of because they didn’t have a character bio. I prefer knowing something about the character before I interact.
A rule page.
What should I put on the rule page?
1. Your blog status.
Are you non-selective, selective, semi-selective, highly selective, mutuals only? I want to know as soon as I click on the blog.
2. Are you willing to do smut?
3. Do you have any triggers?
If so, list them.
What shouldn’t I do when roleplaying?
Don’t Godmod.
What is Godmodding?
Don’t write smut if you are not 18+.
It’s illegal, and you could both get in a lot of trouble.
Don’t harass people because they haven’t responded.
People have lives outside of tumblr, and timezones are a thing.
Don’t be the grammar police
Not everyone speaks the language you’re writing in. Don’t be a dick.
Don’t reblog threads you are not a part of.
It is very rude.
What should I do when roleplaying?
Well first and foremost, you should have fun! That’s the most important part.
Approach people! It never hurts to ask!
Wanting to RP, but afraid starters will be ignored.
Seeing an ‘Open RP’ starter thread, but too afraid it’s not meant for me.
Finally getting someone to RP, but afraid I might be boring them.
Rping.
THIS IS ME. THIS. IS. ME
RPING WITH NEW MUTUALS
Late Night Wanderings Sentence Starters
“What are you doing out this late?”
“This part of town isn’t a good place to be at this time of night.”
“Now what’s a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this?”
“You do realize what time it is, right?”
“Where are you going at this hour?”
“The sun isn’t rising anytime soon, you know.”
“Do you know where I am?”
“The city looks different at night.”
“This street is very dark…”
“Why don’t you come stand in the light?”
“Are you lost?”
“I got turned around in the dark…”
“This isn’t the time to go wandering around.”
“Only fools and trouble come out to these parts at this hour.”
“Looking for trouble, are we?”
“A little late to be shopping.”
“Just coming back from the bar?”
“Think any of the pubs are still going to be open?”
“Trouble lurks around every shadowed corner.”
“Woah! I didn’t see you there!”
“Where did you come from?”
“What are you doing here?”
“A bold move to show your face here in the shadows of night.”
“Go home.”
“It isn’t safe here at this time of night.”
“You’re being watched.”
“What are you doing still up?”
“Looking for something?”
“I like walking when the streets are empty.”
“It’s dangerous to walk at night alone.”
“I know where I’m going.”
“The trees are kind of spooky…”
“Did you hear that howl?”
“Was…was that an owl…?”
“This path is scary at night…”
“The woods is no place a __ after dusk.”
“Oh you poor soul, wandering lost in the forest under the new moon…”
“You can’t see the stars from here…”
“This is the witching hour.”
“Dark beasts lurk here. Be cautious.”
“Stay on the road!”
“Talking a midnight stroll along the beach?”
“The ocean is so mysterious at night…”
“What brings you to the pier at this hour?”
“What dangers lurk in these dark waters, I wonder.”
“You’re going to get yourself lost one of these days.”

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would
“Please oh please open up your computer to a porn virus! If you don’t you’re evil!”
Freeloader Comin’ through!
We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).
And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.
Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.
Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.
Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:
Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature
Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu
And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”
And then just refreshed the page
Roleplayers, reblog if your blog is safe and welcoming of people of all races, religions, genders, orientations, nationalities, etc! ❤️ 🧡 💛 💚 💙 💜 🖤
You are valid
Even if you’re not anyone’s favorite roleplay partner
You’re still valid!
Even if you feel that you’re easily forgotten
You’re still valid!
Even if it’s hard to write replies for a few days or even weeks
You’re still valid!
Even if you have to take a break for your mental health or real life
You’re still valid!
Even if you think you’re easily replaced
You’re still valid!
Even if some attempts at interactions go ignored
You’re still valid!
Everything you do is wonderful and beautiful and true to you and your muse! Don’t give up! Keep trying, keeping writing, keeping creating!
You. Are. Valid.
