*Sigh* okay well I know that I was on a streak about things that I felt like I could talk about for at least a while but. But now I'm stuck on a road block and my thought process needs some gas, but this game didn't give it the fuel it needed.

Browser Games #01 Killer Time Killers

Browser games. In the words of my favorite radio presenter. “I’m one of a certain vintage” so I remember a time when all we had as kids were flash games on Albino Black Sheep, or Cartoon Network dot com. Hanging out on public computers and playing Scorched Earth 2000. There’s a simplicity and charm to browser games. So if you happen to be stuck in a place where you have a lot of down time, you can’t use your phone, and on a computer that won't let you install any programs. Then maybe this video will give you some ideas of fun browser games to try. Or at least something for you to do when your boss isn't looking.

Welcome back to another video here on Mummified Games, I'm Tony and today were going to be taking a look at 5 different internet browser games available on Itch.io TODAY that you can go play

#1 Cardinal Chains by Daniel Nora

Cardinal Chains is a puzzle game you start with a Blue X square and a bunch of white squares formed into an island of sorts. Your job is to start from the Blue X, and in a chain of connecting squares you need to fill in each white square. Rules are you have to snake though the squares. No overlapping or going over a square you already filled in. fill 'em in and you're onto the next level.

The white squares have 1s in the middle of them, After a few basic levels they introduce squares with 2s in them showing that the new mechanic where you can only go up in numbers, If you snake from a 1 to a 2 you can only go to other 2s or move up to a 3 or more. I think this is a great mechanic that takes the basic concept of this game and moves it up a bit.

And then once that's been shown and understood they take it up a notch again. And instead of just the Blue starting box you get more and more colors. Eventually along with Blue, you get Orange, Green, Red, Purple, and more and more colors. Each inclusion of another color is again another layer of difficulty. You think you can see the path out and around a the squares, But really that color should have gone in the opposite way and a different color was meant to follow that path you were thinking of

Like a lot of Puzzle games out there, this game gets more and more difficult as the game goes on. There is no way I'm going to get all the way through the advertised 500 levels that are in this game. This game is a good time filler for sure.

#2 Forget the Breaks by Ferran Bertomeu Castells

OH MY GOD This is a hard one. In this game you control two cheeky little train carts. They are tied together with a bar. The Carts go running down a bunch of train tracks. Its your job to make sure they don't crash. You can move the two carts to another track above or below the current track they’re on at different switch points. You control the back carts lane changes with “W” and “S” and you control the front with “I” and “K”. And uting these controls you have to change over to another lane before they crash at the end of the line or get pulled off the tracks because the two carts are more than one lane apart.

The difficulty in this one is definitely the same thing as trying to pat your head and rub your tummy at the same time. You’ve got to develop some multi-function skills. Having your hands doing two different things at the same time. Keeping an eye on two different carts on the left side of the screen while also looking at what is coming next on the right side of the screen. Woof it’s a lot of things to manage.

The gameplay is as I described “simple” but the execution is the hard part. Developing the dex to do these things. But its still a learnable game. You get better as you go along and your hands start to understand what to do. Like picking up a new controller. I know that when I moved from the Nintendo 64 to the Gamecube controller it was a learning curve for sure.

And then you start to understand the game and what it needs from you. Whats this a new section? I'm no longer just moving through a forest? Ooooo a town. Wait is that a switch. Oh cool so its a new way of switching lanes in the city, NOPE! It automatically switches after a cart travels over it. So both your carts can be headed down the same tracks just fine, and then you run over this thing well guess what their split now. And you have to fight to bring them back together on the same track so you don't have to split your brain in two just to make it down the track.

Splitting your brain in two... two brains... What if you cheated the system and made this a two player game? I have to try this HEY BRIDGET COME HERE AND TRY THIS REAL QUICK!

#3 Monster Match by Axol Studios

A Match 3 adventure combat game. Coooool. You play as a Litch, in designation and story reasons only. You have a home where you have a junk load of gold and what not. There are a bunch of heroes who want to come and take your gold. You make matches of monsters on the board and they fill up a vial of essence at the top and when you fill it up it makes one of those monsters. They go on and fight the heroes, defending your home.

Make a match of 5 in a “L” shape and you’ll receive a potion. That potion will do your choice of 3 things. Shuffle the board, blow out one type of item on the board like all the ghosts or all the skeletons for a while. Or create a few random creatures and make more essence for your vials.

There are 7 levels you play though keeping the heroes at bay. Slowly the levels get harder and harder to play in, going from 4 different creatures to match up to the max of 6.

The game talks about how its fast paced and let me tell ya I was squarely looking at the board and looking for another set to make the whole time, I didn't have time to look up and see what monster was the closest to bein made. It was all go go go. I feel like I was doing a good job at what I did and the score I got. But I have no idea where I ended up at since every time I tried to enter my initials after a game, it would freeze and I couldnt see where I ranked or anything.

Its a fun game and quite frantic. I’d add it to a bag of small games to get you through a long trip or somethin.

Mmmm that's upsettin my “” key seams to be oin out on me. That's frustyratin and a bit of an annoyance.

#4 Mobius by Papercookies

Wow this ame is so unique i hate it. Okay So this ame has a mind blowin mechanic behind it. So you start playin on a lare circle where you rin left and riht around and pick up coins. That's nothin new that just sounds like Super Hexagon but a platformer. Yeah so you have to trule with wich way is up and all that jazz. But what if in the middle of a level you suddenly unlocked the level into a morbius strip. Cool. Thanks. So you have to manuver the map to be able to see all the sides of the map that you’re trying to move your little dude around on. You are an evil person. Who hurt you. Who came in and peed in your cheroes to make you want to make a game like this.

My personal tale of this game is that I would fight and struggle between holding the space bar to jump for too long and then hit some spikes. And now i have to gauge my jumps to see where on a 3D area I’m going? There is no good here, only evil lingers in this place.

But long story short you collect ALL the coins in the level to open the magical door to the next level. Standard stuff. All the things that are cut and dry platform things work great in this game. Its the map that's a hornets nest of spite. Its hard enough for 3d manipulation on a 2d surface.

Despite what I said, I want to make sure that I’m clear, This is a good idea and the design for the levels is great. And the idea to have a level fold in on itself is perfect. I can only imagine how the game is going to keep building different levels. I'm just going to hate it the whole way.

And finally our last game

#5 Galactic Wars by Volcano Bytes

Galactic Wars is a Galactica clone parody homage, thing. The game is a basic arcade shooter, you're given three lives and it's your job to rack up the highest score in a tiny version of evey Left to Right 2d shooter out there. The game is a simple little game where you randomly gain weapon power ups or speed boosts to your ship. It's a nice little thing but once you learn that’s all you get for your ship there isn't much more to keep fighting for.

BIT Galactic Wars EX. Does look good. That one looks a lot more polished and looks like more upgrades.

Oh but because of this game I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of what the Pico 8 is. OOOoooo someone made a Desert Buss clone!

So anyway the best thing about Galactic wars is that it gives you a constantly refilling bar at the bottom to show you how much firepower you have left. So you can count your shots and if there are 3 aliens in a line then blast off 3 shots and then while those are flying forward you can move onto the next alien. Maybe 15 minutes of gameplay till you’re ready for something new.I know I was.

And there you have it. 5 games that are playable on your browser. No installing. No extra controllers needed. No big party games that need a bunch of people. It's just, go to the website on itch, and boom you’re ready to play.

Welcome back to another video game review here on Mummified Games. I'm Tony and today we were taking a look at the meditative, soundscape “puzzle” game ISLANDS: Non-Places, by Carl Burton LLC.

THAT'S 2 FOR TWO BBY!

Two games in a row that are abstract easy to play games that you are left to experience in a nice easy 45 minute session.

The game has many accolades by a bunch of different reviews and award shows. And guess what here comes another positive review from another “publication”

So in this game you are given a bunch of Islands. Scenes where you are able to turn the small isolated space around and see it from all angles in a circle. There are multiple little slices of life scenes that feel like they're ripped from real world locations. Bus stops, Lobby inside a hotel. The baggage claim at an airport. All of these locations start off very simple and easy to wrap your head around.

I'm going to try not to give away the fun of this game. Most of the fuin is discovering what comes next from this basic locations.

But for an example the first of 10 levels you are presented with, starts off with a bus stop. Something very basic, something that almost all of us have seen a million times. Covered little room where people can wait and hang out waiting for the bus.

To advance the “game” you need to click the pulsing lights that exist in the scene. In this case it's the panel that holds an add or the bus stop list.

The soundscape will change from just the sounds of the city to include the sounds of an approaching bus. The bus comes into existence as it makes its way out from the fog that surrounds the island.

The sounds in this game are so on point. It's easy to say simple things like Okay yeah well duh obviously there would be bus sounds coming from a bus driving up. But it's the fact that these sounds are coming from abstract shadowy representations of these items. It's a great way to show what might be going on.

And then break what you expect.

The next thing that happens. If you open the front door and the passengers get off. The bus is filled with chicken eggs.

Okay first off you get off at the back of the bus and not the front, the front is where the new people get on the bus.

But so the eggs get off the bus and there are these chicken sounds.

So the sounds not only shine a light on what the things are that happen in the sense but also are used as a step away from what's normal. No one expects eggs to make chicken sounds. They’re expected to go sizzle in a pan on the stove.

This game is a bunch of great scenes of something normal and mundane, but still beautiful in its depiction of its normality. Like a lonely little bus stop.

But the game takes that normal scene and breaks it in such a way that you wouldn't expect.

There was a bit of commentary that I thought I saw in the level about the hotel lobby with the chairs all around the trees. But Idk maybe it's not actually a thing.

All the scenes are a nice meditative way of showing and interacting with the visual... poetry... might be a word for it. That feels pretentious. But it's soft. Beautiful things that it shows you.

Anyway, go check this game out. It's an interesting time. There are tons of times where you might have your expectations rattled.

Fugue In Void: A Review

You just have those moments when you're in a store and are bombarded by people working there, constantly asking if you need help with anything, and you have to say over and over, No , I'm fine, thank you.

Then eventually when you do need help or have questions, then there is no one around.

Yeah that's what this feeling is.

Welcome to another Video game review, My name is Tony and today we are stretching the meaning of video games. Because today's game is more of an artistic experience. Today we are going to be looking at Fuge In Void.

This game isn't so much a game as it is a walkthrough experience where you walk through this series of buildings and rooms.

There are no enemies, no pickups, no on screen hud, and nothing in english.

This game is 100% walk around these maps and make your way from room to room falling down a pit, stepping on a switch, or looking at something interesting.

It's almost impossible to put into words what goes on in this game. Like what the meaning of it is. But I'm going to try.

So from the start there is a subway car that you hear driving by and the title of the game comes up and fades away. Okay no start menu that's fine. We’re jumping right into it. Lots of games do this on the first run though.

The game starts with this weird light thing coming towards the screen. And you’d be forgiven if you thought that this thing SLOWLY approaching the screen was something that you are meant to approach with some sense of control. Well no it's just moving SO INCREDIBLY SLOW that you’ll just have to wait for it.

Okay fine.

There are a lot of abstract things that come up and all of them can not be manipulated at all or move in the slightest. So you are stuck for the first 6 to 8 minutes of this game just watching weird things sort of happen.

Move down a tube that looks like warpspace.

Actual warpspace lights move.

Then a weird cascading square from a single point that then you fly into. Okay it's weird I've moved past the idea that this game will make any sense with its images.

So one thing's rolls after the next and suddenly you are shown this large body of water with rolling waves and something under the surface.

That something rushes to the surface and it's a long never ending bridge.

Cool. It's got a great black and white theme to it. Neato.

Then finally the camera shows a first person look down the length of this bridge. Into the nothing black of the sea all around the camera.

Wait, camera? Yes, now it's finally time for you to control something in this game.

Fun. So it's not a white bridge but a concrete bridge that when you look at the bloom falls away and you are able to see the poured stone. And it's just an effect that the world is doing to stimulate your eye dilation.

Sort of like if you're in a dark room you can see everything but if you stare at a bright light then everything around the light darkens a bit.

So you slowly walk down the length of the bridge from a dead end towards nothing. But eventually I start to see a long building in the distance appear.

Am I dead? I'm dead aren't I.

Lots of falling imagery and then a rough sea with a bridge all white? Yeah I'm going to put money down that I'm dead.

Its slowly becoming “if the directors of What Dreams May Come, were inspired by Dune, and wanted to make a walking simulator, with a Horror Void soundtrack”

Anyway, so you walk towards this purgatory castle and there's still nothing to see. Just a lot of concrete floors, walls and roof.

Up and around the corner you find a hole with large balck pipes moving down.

Alright I guess up your nose with a rubber hose. You jump down and it takes you to another room that's nothing but grey concrete rooms and some back pipes.

This is sort of the crux of the whole game. There's a lot of interesting construction and areas to look at but there's nothing really to do in the game. Just a lot of rooms with a switch. Nothing hidden. It's not like you’re going to discover anything weird or unlock a secret hidden ending.

I mean maybe there is one but with no save feature there is no way i'm going to walk all the way though the game just to get back to the temple with all the sand and try all the different buttons. Just before the big door. So maybe there is something different there.

The whole game feels like one of those things where someone who was good at making Void soundtracks wanted to make a game and they did.

The music in this game is Spooky adjacent. Like there could be something spooky happening tomorrow but not today.

It's the lack of anything actually scary showing up right now. That makes you feel like maybe the spooky thing comes out later. Things aren't ready to be spooky, you can hang out and chill here but the spooky delivery says it's in transit and will be delivered by end of day tomorrow.

Lots of what might be whispers around the corner. But nothing that actually sounds like voices either.

Sounds of things moving through pipes. But nothing moves.

Dark corners are more made to make a feeling of unease or show off interesting ideas, rather than hide anything.

The game does a lot of interesting things with this lighting stuff.

There is one room that you’ll come across where two bright lights are going back and forth alternating between them being either on or off.

In this room there are a ton of empty cubes that don't bounce light or anything they just are only illuminated on one side by one active light at a time.

Giving this weird effect of them being invisible when the other light is on.

Very interesting idea.

So the game goes on and on for about 45 to 50 minutes depending if you're like me and you want to look at every nook and crevice.

Showing off some interesting ideas and concepts. I liked the freeway in the sand with the altar under the sun. That was a fun level. Cool visuals.

But sadly there's nothing that the game tells you is true about what you're seeing. So there are things to see and experience but the meaning of what they are is all up to you.

That is until it gets to the “end” of the game. Then it says something and it's like an understanding of what it all meant. But also an unfulfilling cap to what the game was all about. And what you the character were doing this whole time.

But Who am I to say that? What one person might think about this game might be different than others. I thought it was a purgatory thing but turns out I was wrong and it was something else.

I Don't know, maybe it's something I missed and something deeper was happening. Maybe it was something to do with the bricks in the room at the end.

I like how the end ties things together sort of.

But there's nothing to say about the meaning of it either.

So that's about all I can say about this game. It's a good walking experience. If you are looking to play this then Its Name Your Own Price on itch right now so you can just click the link in the description and go experience it for yourself.

Despite not being able to say much in the way of critically examining the game it's still an interesting experience. Of light and darkness. And how we navigate through it. Go check it out.

2064 Read Only Memories: A Review

Welcome back to another video game review here on Mummified Games. Today were going to be taking a look at the modern Point and Click Mystery game 2064: Read Only Memories. By Midboss.

This game has a lot of charm to it. I Love how this game presents itself. The Music, art, story, and voice work, is all great and do a really great job of pulling me in. I did not want to stop playing. This was the first time where I was like okay maybe i play for 2 hours. And then write the review. But sadly there was no way I could do that if I wanted to make my deadline.

So the game is a future cyberpunk scene where Humans have found a way to cybernetically and biologically augment their bodies. Sort of just like every other Cyberpunk cenario. Just par for the course at this point.

Wouldn't have it any other way.

But what's great about this game is that it's not overly burdened with the constant narrative of life sucks and there's inequality and class disparity.

It's not dystopian cyberpunk, it's more optimistic. People seem to really be jammin with the future that they find themselves in. For the most part.

So it's your standard affair people are making so many augmentations to themselves in so many different ways. That there is a rebel group that is coming up that wants to see humanity return to who they were.

Not like a full blown god's perfect image, it's not a religious thing. But still embracing tradition and what makes humans human.

I don't know if we have the science to make Snake people then I'm all for it.

Ooo la la.

There are Robots that this big company is making that are designed to Walk like the humans, talk like the humans. But it's all just fancy code. And then the game tells you about one scientist that is working on transcending that limitation of just fancy code. And make something new.

Story intro out of the way, The scene opens with your less than standout apartment and you learn that you are a journalist, sort of.

And after you go through a nothing of a tutorial. As in like it's almost not even there cause it's so basic. You write a report and then go to bed.

INCITING ACTION

In the middle of the night a little blue robot hacks your door. And breaks into your apartment. Interfaces with your computer, cleans your apartment and also tries to clean the old computer, bricking it in the process.

You wake up and they tell you that they have selected you out of all known contacts of their master to help them track their master down. He was Captured last night and you need to join the robot to track down their master.

The robot's name is Turing, probably named after the real person Alan Turing the Computer Scientist.

A note about the dialogue and interactions with Turing. ALL THEIR LINES ARE VOICED! This game gives you so much during the process. There is a lot of reading to be doing in this game and luckily it's not all put on you.

I don't want you to think that I don't like Reading. Or that I think reading is hard. But if I'm meant to put multiple hours into a game. Doing nothing but reading for the entirety of it can get tiring

So I'm glad that so much is fully voiced. Gives you the chance to look down and tweet your love of this game for a second.

And that if there is a name or something that comes up you instantly know how it's meant to be pronounced. Instead of having to wait till you say it outloud in a video game review and suddenly everyone thinks “wait Tony, you say its like that? Wow okay”

Look, I have yet to hear anyone talk about Itch in casual conversation so I have no idea if you need to add the Dot I O to the end of it or if I sound like a Boomer who says out loud Dot Com at the end of every website name. “Yeah i just look it up on Google Dot Com”

I'm trying here folks I really am.

So after Turing tells you about what they need you join them on their mission to track down their creator and figure out what's at the bottom of this whole thing.

A note about the profile creation scene, it's quite funny and I thought it was super cool how they include multiple ways of character settings.

There's nothing visual that you can do to change your character so there's that. But Turing asks you for your name, you just type it out and I was excited for maybe a robot voice that was going to try to pronounce Mummified but it didn't go well.

Asks you for your pronouns, Yes! I love it. I would expect nothing less from a developer like Midboss. The people who host the Steam Summer of Pride Sale for the last couple of years Highlighing Queer games.

But the fact that they don't just limit to just He/Her/They but also Zir, and another one that slips my mind. And also an option to input your own preferred pronouns. SO COOL!

And I was ready to maybe answer one more silly question. That's where I was thinking the game would take things, assuming based on its sense of humor and the jokes that would come up in this game.

But no it was a real question about dietary needs and restrictions, to be kept in mind when out and about and talking about food. Holy crap that's so cool.

So the game gives you options like Omnivore, Vegetarian, Vegan, Halal, Gluten Free Dairy fr

What a super cool thing to include in your game. This just adds to the inclusion that is offered to players of all different ways of life.

So I just hunted down the list of food options in the video recording I took of this game and I'm reminded of just how funny this game is.

There are great jokes in this. There are subtle allegories to our own real world things in this game.

Turing says they found a better door that you could use to replace the current door you have due to its sub standard encryption features to prevent people from hacking though. And they recommend a particular model of door and mention it has over 300 reviews on Congo.

Wait... Congo. HA! Okay that got me. Cause you know Congo the river. And the Amazon river. I thought it was funny.

Also there is a joke about the Creator having a list of different things on the TV that they were watching like Ted’s Tech Tips. That one got me, because it might not be a thing but I'd like to think it's a nod to Linus Tech Tips.

This game is filled with great cute jokes. There are a couple of options that the game gives you when you wake up to see a strange robot in your room, some of the reactions are more fearful. And while reading them as an option I thought to myself WHY?

This little friend is Cute as hell. There's no way I would be scared of them. Their cute faces and little arms. I love them so much.

So the story is sound and the writing in it is so well done. The voice acting is great as well. Turing sounds innocent and has a cute childish nature to them, but they’re not dumb to say the least, they’re still the most advanced AI program in the world.

The gameplay is also stellar. Most of the interactions with things in this world are done with 4 different options.

Look: The game will give you a description of what the item, thing, person, whatever is.

Talk: If it's a person you can talk to them. Or sometimes things have voice commands.

Take/Touch, you might be able to pick something up or turn it on. Computers would take you to another window and you could do other things inside it.

Use time on: At the start of the game you're given an ID card and you pick up a pair of headphones in your apartment. The id could be used to get you places or scan for whatever might come up. Or you can connect your headphones to random things to hear stuff. What's funny is that you can use your headphones on almost anything and you can get some description of what you hear.

Real basic stuff. Like it's described. It's a Point And CLick Mystery Game. A lot of the game is being given a scene and you can talk to people in it, or interact with the things on the static screen.

Everything in this game flows so well together. Nothing takes you out of the experience. Its a story that takes you in and doesn't let go.

I think this is a game that I can fully recommend to people no matter what. If you have it. If you were curious about it. If you’ve never heard of it. Any range of feeling and knowledge of this game I highly recommend you go check it out.

Tonight We Riot: A Review

Tonight we Riot is another one of those games that sound like a tweet from “The Next Big Indie Game”

“Its as if Mega Man and Streets of Rage had a baby and its full of Socialist indoctrination.”

So as a DemSoc my self I see the themes in this and think to myself. Hell yeah lets go. Lets fight for the right for us to earn a livable wage and over though those in power who think the people don't deserve to be paid a fairly for their work.

So this game is super cathartic getting to throw cocktails at police who don't hear the people they swore to protect.

This game is kinda dope.

There is a great bit that comes in World 2 called Bootlicker Bayou, the whole level is in a mining operation. And what a great commentary it is that people who live in rural areas and are blue collar workers are stereotypicaly pro state authority police apologists. So good. Except this level is a bitch to get though.

We can sit here and talk about the symbolism and the politics and whatever else about the theme of this game all day. But its been 3 days since i've played an actual GAME. so let me talk about the actual game for a bit.

The gameplay si that you play as a leader of a riot mob and you go through the city Liberating buildings and growing the number of people that are with you fighting the police and destroying the vehicles they use to silence you.

Along the way you collect Bricks and Cocktails to throw at the Police and Tactical vehicles. The other members of your mob do the same. The larger your mob grows the more items are thrown at whatever you’re aiming at.

Make it through the level retaining enough rioters at the end and you can unlock 1-3 “Stars” and these get you closer to unlocking more items. Gas Masks, wrenches to throw straight and fast against enemies. Just wish there were more in a level. Like the bricks and Cocktails.

The controls are 1000x better on a controller. I was playing on the mouse and keyboard for a while and felt the controls were not that great. I was constantly wanting to click on people to attack but melee attacks only hit the way you're facing and the movements are what turn you one way or the other. So even though you're clicking on one person your revolutionist might be facing another way.

I think it would be better if it was more like ENter the Gungeon or any other top down shooter.

There's always been something in my mind that didn't feel right about Side scroller beat-em-ups. It's super hard to tell if you are in the right line to hit right or left. I always had that problem in games like Streets of Rage, TMNT, or Castle Crashers. Though Castle Crashers is a little bit more forgiving.

But just like in Roguelikes making it impossible for the player to get that far in the story, Sidescrollers like this just are inherently hard to fight in. Not to mention that aiming in this game is a radial thing around your fighter, and not an angle of thow to get more height, or trying to get more range while throwing.

ITs just something with this game that felt weird and frustrating at times.

Other than the controls not quite feeling 100% the arcade-ness feel of the game feels right. I talked about HAQUE and how it was aggressively retro in its style almost brutally.

This game on the other hand feels natural in its retro art style. It feels like its not TRYing to be retro but it just naturally is. And it feels great.

The art across all the levels and things inside of it all feel cohesive. All the items in the world feel like their true to the location they’re placed. The cars don't feel like they don't fit in the world. The building stand out when they need to. The subtle color palette choices give great signals to what needs to be interacted with.

The music was honestly non impactful, and that's probably the worse things about this game.

That's not that bad of a thing to say to be honest. If the worst part of your game is that its Music is “meh” then id chalk that up as a win.

Ah beans friends. I finally get a game that i feel good about and I have nothing i can say about it to make you interested in picking it up.

Its good.

Put this game at the top of your list to play next if you bought this as part of the Racial Justice Bundle on Itch. Or if it was part of some other bundle of games you have in your back catalogue.

Pick it up if you have the coin to spare on a video game you bourgeoisie, PLaying video games all the time and not working liek us the members of the Proletariat.

Wait, I play video games. Am I the Bourgeoisie? No I have crippling debt I can't be. I haven't been able to dine at a restaurant in over a year. I've been relegated to the drive through liek my fellow working class comrades.

Quiet As A Stone: A Review

Hey you got a video game in my aset creator tool.

Welcome back to another video review here at Mummified Games. I'm Tony and today we're looking at the Scene builder video game Quiet as a Stone by Distant Lantern.

So what happens when you’ve been playing video games for too long and you are suddenly given a program that is meant to be more creative and not so much about a goal or task...

You get me trying to unlock and clear a level for 20 minutes that has no unlocks and I'm left flying in circles.

Okay let's talk about what this game is.

This game is a sort of meditative experience where you are able to enjoy a soothing scene with soft music and weather effects. Also giving you a small creative outlet in it as well.

The game gives you a small-ish island where you can place rocks, grass, trees, bushes, and a long list of other structural things. All in various stages of life and decay.

The little worlds you sculpt all have a day-night cycle to them, where the shadows will grow longer and shorter as the “world” turns.

It's as if Tabletop simulator cared a lot more about weather effects.

The game has some gems you can collect as well. These gems don't really have a huge value to them. Some of the actions you can take in this game will cost you gems. Like planting trees, or placing some other items from the list of items you’ve discovered so far.

Take your time and slow down with making these locations.

In a previous video review I looked at the Hex Kit map maker and with that I was able to start to see the scene taking shape. A story was building in my head.

With this game though it was like a foggy whisper of an idea that was just almost there. I would be making a scene and moving things to how I liked and placing trees. And a thought would come though of someone sitting on a rock, poking the fire or adding a log to keep warm as the wind was picking up. But it was just scenes of what was on screen and what the location held. There was no story or tale that was coming though. It was limited to just the story of the moment and what someone might be doing right then and there. Not what brought them to this moment or what they need to do beyond it. It was a super isolated thing.

Still a great way to sort of build a set or a stage for something.

But one thing that is done really well in this game is the camera feature.

The camera feature offers a lot of fun with these pictures. There’s a lot of settings for them. You can change if you want a portrait, square, wide, or cinematic aspect to your framing.

They have multiple sizes for the “film” that is being taken. All the way from 25mm to 150mm ish.

Multiple f stops so you can play with the focal length of these shots.

And then there are a ton of filters you can cycle though.

I did take some shots of this torch in the middle of this map. And I think they're fun. I'm no Peter McKinnon. I’m not out here taking all these photos all over the place. So i'm sure that there are more people who would be able to do more with these tools than I would after 10 minutes of fiddling around with it..

It's a good game, tool, app, thing. Even if it's limited in its abilities and what it allows you to go work with.

I would say that if you are a storyteller and you need a ton of backgrounds or settings for your story to happen in. then this might be a good way to build out a scene and then draw over it if you draw characters this might give you the ability to rough out some realistic backgrounds for your drawings you make and help you practice scene composition. Draw over the photos you take. Not trace but sort of bulb off of.

And maybe my brain doesn't work the same way yours does. Maybe while you're watching me play this game you’re saying to yourself. Oh I see a thousand stories coming from this level you're fiddling with. Well then great i think you should go pick up this one and get more story ideas from it.

For everyone else go check it out if you have it. But don't feel hard pressed to go pick it up right now unless you absolutely need a screen builder tool like this.

Haque: A review

It was funny one summer of anime I was reading this really cute manga about this girl who maxed out her level by killing nothing but slimes, the same time as everyone was getting into that other anime call “that time i was reincarnated as a slime” super weird that these things happened fairly close to each other.

Oh well let's talk about fighting some slimes.

Welcome back to another video here on Mummified games. My name is Tony and today we're going to be taking a look at the RPG Roguelike Haque by Super Try.

This is another one of these roguelikes where you are asked to pick one of three characters to go run though these dungeons. And try to get as far as you can.

The game has a heavy retro feel to it. And I mean heavy retro as in they let you turn on CRT scan lines and a faux dirty screen to make it feel super rough and hard to see...

Ah yes the anarcho-retro style. So in love with old graphics that were going to actively make the experience as basic as possible on your nice clean 1080p monitors and TVs. The chaotic Evil of game graphics.

Luckily if you don't want to play with dust and crap all over your screen, then grab some monitor cleaner

And if you don't want the fake dirt in the game then you can turn it all off along with the CRT scanlines. Doing this will make it all crisp clean sharp pixels.

Anyway moving on from that small personal setting.

The game starts when you first load it up asking you to impot the date. But no matter what you type it does the right date. And that was cool when it happened. You can just press the same key over and over again to progress though this intro but it might also be fun to just pretend you're inputting these commands.

I don't have any video of this because I started playing the game and forgot to hit the record button on OBS. So yeah. Sorry.

So once you’re in I highly recommend you play the tutorial and figure out what everything means. The symbols and art that exist in this game are fine. And once you know what they stand for it makes sense, but just jumping right into the game can be a little deep.

The controls are fairly simple, similar to the controls of a game that I reviewed earlier called Midboxx where you can click around your character, selecting the squares around them and moving to the next squares. And also attacking this way.

Hitting “I” will bring up your inventory and you can also see what you have equipped. Similar to all the other RPGs that are out there.

All the actions you can do are bound to 1 through 4 and also Q W E R at the top left of the keyboard. Compared to ability buttons in some MOBA or MMO games.

QWER being reserved for special skills that your equipped items give you. And then there are 1 through 4 that are quick locations for consumable items. Examples being positions and other limited uses items.

There is a companion that comes with you that fights the monsters you might see in the dungeons.

But that's sort of the basics. There are tons of skills and items that you could use in the game that you could just hold right click over and they explain the spell.

Once you get out of the tutorial the actual game starts with you picking one of 3 different random skilled and stats characters at the start. They’re nowhere near your typical archetypal characters, sometimes you can get a sorcerer that is a great fighter. Sometimes you can get a Necromancer Mushroom that spews spores everywhere. And then there sometimes is a werewolf that you can play as, also.

It's hard to tell you about this game because there isn't a lot that sets it apart from other Roguelikes there are.

The music is fairly basic, and now that I stopped playing the game I could not tell you what any of it sounded like. I know there was a sort of chime sounding song that would play in the shops and that was different from the other songs.

Oh there is a fun idea they put into the shop mechanic.

There's no money or currency in this game. So the shopping experience is a barter deal. Where you select the item you want to buy and then select the items you would want to trade for it. And the game gives you a percentage of if that deal would go through or not. That's actually interesting.

Especially since the chance of the trade going through is the same window in the game where they show you the likelihood of the attack you're about to do will land or not. So that's fun.

There's a sight range thing... *sigh*

There is just nothing to really talk about in this one. It's all just more dungeon crawling fighting more enemies.

There is a story going on with the program being corrupted. And there is an old man that I was halfway through level 3 or 4 when I was thinking okay when is he going to turn on me? And turns out to be a bad guy.

Idk why i thought that might happen but after beating the level one skeleton boss he said something to me that i thought was super ominous. All while the screen was glitching out a bit. Very weird.

Having played this for about an hour and a half I didn't get really far into the story part of this Roguelike. Again a fault of the genre. Your story can't be super long or hard to reach if the player is going to die over and over again.

While playing this game I found myself taking into account the same fighting style that I adopted in Crypt of the Necrodancer. Where if the monster i'm fighting is about to attack i just move back one and they have to spend their turn to move forward.

The problem with this strategy is that the game does not clearly show you how long it is until the other character will take their turn. So you might move back one and then it turns out you have more time until they do their thing.

I feel like this one is going to be the same thing I say about most of the games that came in the Racial Justice Bundle. If you bought that bundle then sure go play this game since you have it. Go find it in your collection and give it a whirl.

But as for a recommendation to go out and pick it up. I'd say unless you really need that crunchy pixel roguelike RPG in your life then sure. If not then I'd give this a pass.

I'm sure ill get to another tool or book review soon if anyone was looking for more of those. I'm giving myself a little bit of time every day to read though some of the actual books in this bundle. The next Book club might not be a bundle but a full book by its self. Obviously i'll keep you informed.

Changeling: A Review

Hey remember Twilight, remember when we were all about those fairytale creature boys.

Yeah. They were good times and bad times.

Welcome back to another video game review here on Mummified Games. I'm Tony and today we’re going to be looking at the visual novel Changeling by Steamberry Studio.

Okay so visual novel, it's just a slideshow of narration and conversation. Gameplay isn't there. You just click over and over again and read the story. There isn't much to do in these games. every once in a while an option will come up and you can pick an option to come up and you can pick to say nothing or push the conversation, Just as an example.

So the only thing to talk about with this is the story, music, and the art work.

Let's get the artwork out of the way real quick. And I want to start by saying that art is a subjective thing and our feelings and opinions can differ and that's okay.

The backgrounds in this game look great in my opinion. The art that comes up while the characters are talking looks detailed and well crafted, the scenes are full and have a rich tone to them. Items and locations look real and lived in.

The character art is something different. They’re clearly designed to invoke curtain feelings from some. One might quickly write this off as teenage fantasy drawings. But that's still too reductive and not fair to the artist and the story trying to be told here. Just because every character in this game looks super pretty and has that air of they were made to look this way. Doesn't mean that the art doesn't have value and...

Alright this is clearly trying for something here but it's just not for me ya know.

All the boys have elven features, clean soft skin, wavy hair, and pouty lips, even the dad and that's super weird. Wardrobes fresh off the runway. And after learning more about the story, I'm already seeing where these characters' stories are going.

Let's talk about the story then while we're here and before we go too far talking about the characters and why they might look the way they do.

So the story is told from the first person perspective of Nora, a 17 year old girl who moves back to the town she used to live in when she was younger so her dad could help take care of her Grandpa. A town that her family ran away from 5 years ago. They ran away from the town because of a weird turn of events. So one day Nora went missing, she got lost in the woods, and then 5 days later showed up randomly and walked out of the forest. Her twin brother had run into the woods to go find her but somehow when he found her he lost sight in his right eye.

He claimed that his sister Nora was a monster and that she had attacked him. Okay weird. Even weirder she doesn't remember any of this. She lost all memory while she was lost in the woods. And only got her memories back shortly before she was found again, but after her brother lost sight in his one eye.

Mmmmmm okay, I have my thoughts about what that could be a sign of what really happened.

Oh and the reason they moved away is because everyone was not sure it was a simple case of a lost child and that there might have been other motives at play. Her brother after this is never nice to her again. And treats her like garbage.

And so Nora and her family move back to the town and her parents are worried about her getting lost in the woods again. But Nora is a real nature feely type. She is explained to us the reader as the kind of girl who likes fantasy stories and nature. Notice a fairy ring in their yard and think about times when they would sit in the middle of it and pretend to see fairies flutter around.

After you get the lowdown on the family dynamic, the dads are nice, the mom can be bossy, and the brother is the worst. Then we get to run though all the meet cutes that happen and were introduced to the boys that are all part of this what i'm going to asume will be Harem of boys that are part of her story.

I don't know, I just have a feeling that this is going to be another one of those kinds of Visual Novels.

So Nora, goes to school and says hi to her old friend and an old enemy, meets more boys and as i'm reading things i'm slowly picking up the little cues from the writing.

The literature class is reading A Midsummer Night's Dream. Ah you don't say.

The boy who says he was up all night long, says Nora looks pale and malnourished. Eating some food is good for your blood. HUGE FLAG!

The brother says Nora isn't even his real sister. And the game is literally called CHANGELING. Okay I see where this is going.

Her old friend says she wants Nora to join her after school club.

Oh Does she now!

There aren't a lot of girls in it and having Nora there would make her feel better having more girls.

MMMMMMMM AND I WONDER WHAT TYPE OF CLUB THIS MIGHT BE! What could it be? Sewing? Web Design and admin? You all working on getting AWS certified in this club maybe?

“It's a paranormal research club”

WOWWWWW WHO WOULD'VE GUESSED THAT WAS GOING TO BE THE CASE!

Some of you who have watched my old videos might have noticed that I no longer read the storepage at the start of the video. I stopped reading them in the video about the same time I stopped reading them before going into a game. I feel like I can appreciate the game more if I'm just going in blind. So I had no idea this was going to be a paranormal fantasy thing. Until the story started dropping not so subtle hints about what might be coming up.

The music is fine, nothing crazy notable about the music in the story. The one complaint is that it might be flowing well with the story and then the change back to this other song. I couldn't explain what song it was but the song always starts at what feels like the beginning and it gives this feeling of not getting anywhere in the story.

I still have no sense of an opinion when it comes to visual novels, and if this one is good or not. The last one I played was that terrible one that I don't want to talk about. And right now there is another one that I've got on the back burner that I'm making my way through. I want to give that one a fair shake because it has some people attached to it that I'm fans of their work.

So what if i'm giving favortisum to another game. I want to fully experience it and give it a full run down.

This story, Changeling, I've got nothing going on with it. I'm not attached and I played it for a good 2 hours to get really into the story. But unfortunately the store page says it has 4-6 hours of gameplay per branch of the story... well piss.

I don't know what to say about this one folks. I've got two games to base my opinion of this on. And that's it.

All I can say is that if you like Visual novels and you want to read one that has a fantasy element to it. Then sure, go take a look.

But like I said Visual novels aren’t my cup of tea so I probably wouldn't have played this if it wasn't for the Racial Justice bundle and the huge pile of games that came with it.

Depth Of Extinction Definitive Edition: A Review

I love that part in Water world when LL Cool J turns to Jason Stathem and says “You’re going to need a bigger boat” Such a classic line from an iconic actor and movie.

Welcome back to another video here at Mummified Games. My name is Tony and today we're going to look at this tactical top down shooter Depth of Extinction: Definitive Edition By HOF Studios.

Do you like Xcom? Well great this is just xcom in a water world game.

Okay well that is from me folks like comment subscribe.

No no no I'm just kidding. This game would be so easy to write off as just Waterworld Xcom. But I owe you all a real review.

So in this game you play as a tactical squad of mercenaries that are here to collect a bunch of things that will unlock something.

The story isn't very complicated from the early game. It's a basic fetch quest. Most of the gameplay comes from the actual combat in this game.

Like I said this game is very similar to XCOM, it's the same strategic shooting squad game. Move your characters into position and set them to overwatch where if something moves light em up. Weigh your options on which target to attack and then unload whatever special type of gun you have.

From where I got to in the game it's missing the base building aspect and tech research that was in XCOM and so from where I got in the game it's missing that bit of fun. But I could be wrong, maybe that comes in after a while.

At the start the game's art style was very off putting, and the story felt a little ham fistted.

So you follow some soldiers, walking into a place that has a machine of some sort, and it's explained to one of the rookies that since they were short staffed they were rushed ahead in their training.

They run into a robot that can't identify itself, weird. The robot gives a warning to the team about collecting the things to unlock the other thing. And then 3 big beefy robots come in and kill the first robot and your team hightails it out of there.

The team explains this to some scientist and they explain “okay well i guess there's nothing to do but get out there and find the things so you can unlock the other thing”

I'm not mincing words, there's no “mmmm it's an interesting prospect, our scientists have been researching this thing for years and the idea of being able to learn more about this big thing would, blah blah blah” it's not like the vault in Borderlands. It's just a task to do so go do the things.

Either this team is super bored and has nothing better to do, or it's a bussy task for these new folk.

So as I said, the story isn't really interesting.

But the art style is the thing that did grow on me over time. At the start it felt like some sudo retro sprite based thing. And it was super not fun to look at in the opening cutscene.

But after getting past that and moving into the actual gameplay. The game let me zoom out a

Little bit and that made all the difference.

The gameplay is the meat and potatoes to this dish.

The game has this map where you’re driving your sub to different bases or structures that were built above the water. The sub has only so much gas to get you to your destination.

This part of the game reminds me a lot of the game I reviewed early on called Onward.

Where you need to stop off and fight the things, gather supplies and move on down the road.

But unlike onward that gives you a sort of line you need to follow due West with the occasional branching paths. This game gives you a wide spider web of locations you can visit on your way from the start to the goal you have.

The game is a lot of moving your squad around the map, shooting bad guys, collecting items, save hostages, investigate terminals, hide around cover, and make your way around these little maps.

It's good, the levels you are given aren't hard to get through, at least at the point where I was playing.

Run though levels and collect and kill things. And slowly your Mercenaries will level up and gain special skills. Sort of like classes in a Role Playing game.

Assault, snipers, rouge, heavy weapons, things like that. And each one has their own special skills and attributes that come with selecting that skill at level 2.

One thing that I love about this game is its clarity in the math for your shot accuracy calculation. They may be whatever numbers that might not have any validity. But they make me feel good.

So the game actually shows you what the likelihood of your shot making contact actually would be. From a base 100 then minus their cover points, then any armor, and so forth and so forth.

I love it. There was a point in my Midboss review where I went too into what each thing meant in the stats in that game and I should've known better. But this one makes it so clear and easy to understand what things might need to be fixed to get a better shot.

And that's the other thing one of these shots give you that unrealistic feeling of “WHAT! That should have hit! How the heck did you miss you were right next to him” they feel realistic. When the shot has under 50% chance of hitting and it misses, it feels normal. And when it's at 90% chance they almost never miss.

Again I keep going back to XCOM as a comparison to this game, but hey that's just what I know.

In XCOM there would be a 90% chance of the squad member with a shotgun making the shot when the enemy is right around the corner. And if they missed then it feels like a giant WTF moment.

I think it's because in this game your characters have more health. In Xcom you have about 4 to start off with and you have to be super careful about your shots.

I for sure will be coming back to this game in my time off. I saw the recording got to an hour, and without hesitation i thought “NOPE, One more”

It's a fun game. And I highly recommend checking it out. IN THE MEANTIME! I've switched up my process of how these videos get made, and instead of doing these videos after i get off work and playing before noon. I've decided that I'm not going to fight my body being a night owl and instead I'm actually writing this at 1 am. And I'm going to go to bed and then record this while my roommates are gone, clock into work, get my 8 hours, and then edit it together after that. I think this will help me reach the hours I need at work and still get the videos out on a regular time.

Not that anyone cares about all that a bit rambly that segment was.
