your phone buzzes for what feels like the hundredth time that morning. you donât even bother looking at it at first, too busy trying to convince yourself that maybe if you stayed perfectly still, the pounding behind your eyes would magically disappear. but, it doesnât.
thereâs another buzz and then another.
and you donât open your eyes at first, only rolling farther beneath your blanket with a miserable groan. every inch of you aches, your throat burns, and breathing feels like too much work.
your phone buzzes once again somewhere beneath the comforter now from you adjusting where you were laying and you whine.
now truthfully, youâve been ignoring your phone for almost three hours. between sleeping, coughing, and telling yourself youâd answer everyone later, you never noticed the string of missed calls piling up overtime, though. it got to the point where your phone had buzzed so much that with the worldâs most dramatic groan, you blindly fish around until your fingers finally close around it, then shove it beneath your pillow just to make it stop. âshut up !â
after feeling one more vibration, you finally snatch it from underneath the pillow, cursing under your breath. you crack one eye open and the brightness of the screen makes you squint â itâs a string of messages and calls from katsuki and a couple of others.
katsuki: 10:32 am
you alive ?
despite feeling awful, a tiny smile tugs at your lips as your fingers move sluggishly across the screen, responding to at least one of his messages.
you: 10:34 am
unforch đ¤
the typing bubble appears the second you text back.
katsuki: 10:34 am
wyd
you go to type back, but youâre interrupted by knocking. the knock at your door actually startles you, so you decide to stare at the ceiling for a long second, debating on pretending you arenât home.
after contemplating, you groan into your blanket, squeezing your eyes shut in the pathetic hope that whoever it was would simply ⌠leave.
but, another knock follows, louder this time.
your brows slowly knit together, ââŚno way.â then your phone buzzes again.
katsuki: 10:35 am
open.
you let out the tiniest, most defeated sigh, letting your head fall back onto the pillow with a weak groan as you stare at your bedroom door and then back at your phone, another message popping up
katsuki: 10:35 am
open the damn door.
ââŚyouâre kidding,â you say with a scoff. it takes entirely too much effort just to drag yourself out of bed. you shuffle down the hallway wrapped in the fluffiest blanket you could find, one hand braced against the wall for balance. âso annoying.â you then mumbled to nobody but yourself.
youâre basically dragging yourself across your home. itâs something like moving with all the enthusiasm of someone marching toward their own execution.
the knocking slowly turns into banging as you move toward the door. ââŚâm coming !â the words barely leave your throat before dissolving into another cough. as you finally get to the front door, unlocking it, youâre already breathing a little harder than you should be, sniffling as well.
the second the door cracks open, katsukiâs brows knit together. his crimson eyes sweep over you from head to toe, but he doesnât say anything right away. he just stands there with a grocery bag hanging from one hand, his brows drawing together a little more the longer he looks at you. his gaze catches on your puffy cheeks and your sleepy eyes as he lets out a slow breath through his nose. ââŚdamn,â he mutters, shaking his head once. âyou look like shit.â the words left him under his breath. then his eyes travel from your face to your messy hair and to the blanket thatâs practically swallowing you whole.
you blink up at him, frowning. youâre far too tired to even cuss him out properly. ââŚwell. good morning to you too,âyour voice embarrassingly raspy.
âyeah ?â one brow lifts as he nudges the door open the rest of the way with his shoulder. âand you donât look happy. did you not wanna see me ?â
âwha?- iâm literally sickââ before you can reply fully and step aside properly, katsukiâs already inside, grocery bag swinging lightly from one hand as he nudges the front door shut with his foot.
you blink after him, âdid you just invite yourself in ?â you mumble, watching him head straight for your kitchen without so much as a second glance like he pays rent.
âmhm,â he only grunts in response, already slipping his jacket over the back of one of your chairs just like heâd done it a hundred times before.
ââŚwell, i donât remember saying you could.â you crossed your arms and raised an eyebrow, your foot tapping lightly.
âdidnât ask,â he mutters, scoffing. âyou looked like hell.â
ârude,â you puffed your cheeks out, finally following after him with slow little shuffles, blanket still wrapped around your shoulders tightly.
he glanced over his shoulder just long enough for you to catch the corner of his mouth twitching. âyouâre sick.â
âstill rude,â you mutter, rolling your eyes.
he ignores you, already unpacking the grocery bag. out came: a carton of broth, chicken noodle soup, crackers, ginger ale, tea packets, a box of tissues, and one of your favorite snacks.
you raised an eyebrow, leaning slightly forward. ââŚwhen did you buy all that ?â your eyes widened at the sight of everything, and you shifted your weight from one foot to the other.
he didnât look up, unable to for some reason. âon the way here.â
âwait, you stopped at the store ?â your eyes mirror the smile appearing on your face. the simple gesture filled you with gratitude, and you felt a soft flutter in your chest as you realize how much your bestfriend really cares for you â cares for you enough to take care of you.
ââŚdid i ?â he said with a slow, deliberate drawl, each syllable dripping with sarcasm. his brows furrowing as he speaks. âobviously.â
ââŚfor me ?â you coo, your voice lilting with playful curiosity and teasing sweetness.
his hands paused for the briefest moment before he went back to setting everything on the counter, far more interested in lining up soup cans than looking anywhere near your face. ââŚwho else is gonna eat this bland-ass food ?â
your lips curled as you snort and wince after, âyou couldâve just said yes.â
ânah,â he clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes. âdonât get cocky with me.â after glancing up and seeing you wince from laughing, his expression softened. itâs very brief, though. easy to miss if you didnât know him.
you finally lean against the doorway, just watching him move around your kitchen with quiet confidence. he finishes putting everything away before glancing over his shoulder. â âŚwhyâre you standing ?â
âi just wanted to see what you were doing ...â
âgo sit down somewhere.â
âno,â you murmur before shuffling over to one of the kitchen chairs, dropping into it with another dramatic sigh. your blanket bunches around you as you rest your cheek against the table, watching him some more.
he sighs, a long, and dramatic one â not minding your longing gaze on him. heâs acting as if he doesnât realize it while gathering the different tea packets he brought.
ââŚyou know,â you mumble after a minute, your voice slightly muffled against your sleeve, âyou didnât have to come all the way over here.â
his hands pause only long enough to tear open a packet of tea. âoh, i know.â
ââŚthen why did you ?â
he doesnât answer, it doesnât come out as fast as he wants it to. he just sets the kettle on the stove before leaning one hip against the counter, folding his arms across his chest. âwell, err,â he clears his throat before continuing. ââŚi called.â
âi slept through itâŚ,â you murmur ashamed. you never ignore your bestfriendâs call. it makes you feel so bad that you start to apologize. âiâm soââ
ânoticed. so, i texted too.â he blurts out before you can apologize. âshut up.â
âwell,â you sigh, rubbing your temple. ââŚi slept through those too until you spammed me.â
another nod, âyeah i know.â thereâs a quiet pause before he looks at you again, his expression settling somewhere between annoyed and concerned, but then a little softened. ââŚfigured if i left you alone, youâd probably convince yourself crackers count as a full meal.â he finally finishes his thought, watching for your reaction in the hopes of making you laugh.
your lips twitch as you sniffle once more, âthey do.â
âthey donât.â he snickers, flashing a small dimple at your grin.
âagree to disagree !â you say with your voice light but firm, sealing the end of this stupid debate with a playful pout.
he lets out another one of those little scoffs that almost sounds like a laugh before turning back toward the stove. ââŚyouâreâ whatever.â
you canât help the tiny, raspy giggles that finally slips through. âand youâre annoying.â
âand youâre still sick.â he says it so matter-of-factly that you just roll your eyes at him, you know heâs not wrong.
ââŚbut youâre still here.â you say after hesitating for a moment.
for just a second, the kitchen goes quiet. the only sound comes from the kettle beginning to warm up. katsuki reaches up to rub the back of his neck before clicking his tongue under his breath. ââŚyeah,â itâs barely louder than the kettle. ââŚguess i am.â
suddenly, you grow curious as you watch him function in a kitchen thatâs not his own. âhow do you even know how to work everything ?â
that earns you a glance and he raises one eyebrow, shrugging. âiâve been here before.â
âso?-â you start before getting cut off by him. âyou also invited me over to build that bookshelf.â he points his finger into the direction of your living room, gesturing at your manga filled and other miscellaneous filled bookshelf.
ââŚoh.â
âthen you couldnât figure out your tv and then your smoke detector.â he continues to ramble about the amount times youâve needed him to come over.
ââŚokay.â you canât even argue with that, heâs lowkey right, once again.
ââŚthen your faucet,â he went on, shoulders slumping as he leaned against the counter. his brows arched in amusement and lips curling into a faint smirk. he gestured, counting on his fingers as if the motion alone could convey how many times heâd come to your rescue. âalso, your stupid consoleââ
âenough,â you glare at him, cutting him off, realizing how dependent you are when it comes to him. ââŚiâm noticing a pattern.â
a quiet snort escapes him before he manages to stifle it, a hint of smugness in his voice as he replies, âyeah, me too.â there it is. that tiny almost-smile he tries so hard to hide. youâve always liked seeing that one.
while the tea simmers on the stove, you find yourself moving off your chair and drifting closer. first youâre leaning against the counter next to him, then your shoulder brushes his arm. a sleepy yawn leaves you while your forehead bumps lightly against his side. âyouâre just really good at everything you do. no glaze.â you quickly add the last part with a scoff.
as you speak, you donât even realize how vulnerable youâre acting, but katsuki definitely does and he tries to come off as unaffected by it while his hand pauses where itâs stirring the tea for you. âuh huh, sure⌠comfortable ?â
a soft sigh escaping your lips as you mumble, ââŚmhm.â
âyou usinâ me as furniture now ?â he asked with a lopsided grin as he glances down at you, mocking your sigh.
âyeah, man,â you murmur with an eyeroll, glancing up at him, âyouâre warm.â
he huffs a laugh through his nose. âyouâre gonna get me sick.âstill⌠he didnât push you off, shifting just enough that youâre leaning against him more comfortably as he finishes up your tea almost.
itâs such a small adjustment, but it means a lot. ââŚthanks,â you mumble quietly, words muffled against his sleeve.
he pretends not to hear you, but grunts anyway. ââŚdonât thank me yet. itâs not done.â he randomly reaches up with his free hand, the back of his knuckles brush carefully across your forehead. his brows knit together as he glances down at you. âstill burninâ up.â
you pout, glancing up at him. âi took medicine already.â
ââŚwhen ?â you fall silent, curling your lips before he asks again. âi said when ?â
âlike ⌠early, early this morning. maybe at three in the morning.â
he slowly closes his eyes, sighing. ââŚwhy were you up at?!â itâs almost the afternoon.â
ââŚoh.â
ââoh,ââ he repeats flatly, flashing a deadpan expression at you and pointing toward the couch with the spoon. âgo sit down before you fall over.â
âno,â you playfully whine, shaking your head.
âyouâre gonna pass out.â
âi wonât !â even as you say that, your knees wobble. you grab onto him so quickly, pretending it didnât happen.
ââŚidiot,â he muttered under his breath.
you donât move, sighing and batting your lashes up at him. ââŚwill you come sit too ?â
he looks at you and looks at the pot, then back at you again. âyouâre really milkinâ this whole sick thing.â
âmaybe⌠but, itâd make me feel better,â you murmured, your voice soft and certain.
his expression softens slightly. ââŚyeah,â his voice then comes out quieter this time. âi know.â
he finishes up the tea finally, turning to you as one hand settling against your side before you can protest. ââŚcâmon.â
âhey !â i can walk !â you exclaim, your hand coming up to meet his.
âsure you can.â his tone says he believes the exact opposite. still, he walks you to your couch and doesnât make a big deal out of it. he just stays close enough that if you stumble again, heâll be able to catch you before you hit the floor. itâs⌠strangely comforting. the feeling of being babied by him.
by the time youâre on the couch, a warm mug is being pressed carefully into your hands. âdrink.â
you hum, glancing down at the cup before drinking some. âitâs bitter.â you wrinkle your nose after one sip.
ââŚitâs tea.â he scoffs, pinching the bridge of his nose in disbelief.
âit tastes like leaves !â you blurt, grimacing at him, eyes narrowing in genuine disgust.
âbecause it basically is leaves ⌠it has herbs n whatnotââ he said, pouting and shrugging loosely. âcâmon just drink it. stop being so difficult.â
âi donât like healthy things,â you flick your hand in the air with a dramatic sigh, as if the very idea of âherb teaâ was beneath you.
the pout quickly comes to and end as the corner of his mouth twitches again, barely. âshocking. very shocking.â
âwow,â you gasp dramatically, coughing as you do so. ââŚthat was mean.â
âyouâll live.â he rolls his eyes yet again, so hard youâre surprised they donât get stuck. âkeep drinkinâ.â
you obey, mostly because every time you stop, he gives you that look. the one that convinces you arguing isnât worth the effort. itâs intimidating, really. your bestfriend is scary.
a calm silence settles between you after that other than your slow sips. the tv is now plays something, itâs one of your comfort shows he turned on for you.
every now and then, katsuki glances away from his phone just long enough to make sure youâve taken another sip. but, this is nice. itâs nice and comfortable, comfortable enough that your eyes begin drifting shut. ââŚoi.â
âhm ?â you hum sleepily.
âdonât fall asleep sittinâ up.â
ââŚmânot.â your head tips sideways despite yourself and you feel the couch dip beside you before a hand reaches over, carefully adjusting the blanket higher around your shoulders as he takes the mug from out of your hands. âliar.â
you donât argue, youâre already halfway asleep.
thereâs a long pause before you feel warm fingers brush a few stray hairs away from your forehead to feel your fever once more. the touch disappears almost as quickly as it came. âalways gotta worry me,â he mutters quietly, mostly to himself.
your sleepy brain catches just enough of it to smile. ââŚyou sure do care a lot for someone who keeps callinâ me mean names.â
he freezes, glaring at you before gritting out, âgo to sleep.â
âthatâs not a no âŚâ
his ears tint the faintest shade of pink. âyouâre fuckinâ delirious.â
âmhm âŚâ you hum in response, yawning softly. âthanks for cominâ over, kats.â you then murmur to him peaking at him for the last time.
ââŚyeah,â his voice comes out softer than before. âsomebodyâs gotta keep you alive.â your smile lingers long after your eyes flutter shut and youâve fallen asleep at last.
